Whether you are a Wendy’s employee, corporate executive or a celebrity, everyone is considered a client. Letitia’s natural ability to make all of her client’s look and feel beautiful, has opened many doors of opportunities. You will see her artistry among the who’s who in the celebrity arena, as their faces are “beat” with her signature look. Too many celebrities to name, but her talent is evident as they walk across the red carpets, award show stages, and/or featured in magazine spreads. BELLE New York, had the honor of sitting down with her one on one, to talk about the life of a MUA and how she helps women embrace and enhance their natural beauty.

“I love the fact that, with makeup you can create and as an artist every new face, is a new canvas.”

BEAUTY THE ART OF MAKEUP BNY: When did you realize you wanted to become a makeup artist? I realized my passion for makeup as a young child. I was maybe five or six years old when I became really intrigued with makeup. I was basically born in the Pentecostal church, attending since I was twelve. Makeup was literally like taboo. It was something you could not talk about, so I would hide and put it on. I never thought it was something I could make out of a career. BNY: How long have you been in the industry and how did you first get started? It will be twenty years this year, but I actually got started when I was in high school. My girlfriend’s complimented me on my makeup, so I started applying their makeup. In between classes, we would have mini makeup sessions in the bathroom, where I would fix their eyebrows. The demand for my craft was so great, I started thinking about how I could make money using my talents. I had an opportunity shortly after high school, in 2009, to work for MAC. A young lady who I purchased my makeup from, worked at MAC, would always say, “You do your makeup so well, have you ever thought about a career in makeup?” At that time, to work for MAC was so competitive. You had to basically be a world renowned artist, to work for MAC. I didn’t think my skills were on the same level as those already working for there. I remembered telling her, “I’m just a little girl playing in makeup.” She suggested I start off working part-time to see if I liked it. The doors and the flood gates opened from there, just from the opportunity working for MAC. BNY: Who are some of the people who have inspired you throughout your career? My first love will always be Sam Fine. First of all he’s gorgeous and he is an amazing, amazing artist. Also, Kevyn Aucoin. I would literally buy every book they wrote and read every article they published. But Sam Fine is the one who began it all for me, because he was a makeup artist in demand. BNY: Where do you draw inspiration? I get my inspiration from everybody. People’s

personalities inspire me. If they are trendy, if they are quirky, if they have a different edge about them, that is an inspiration. Because I am creative, my mind is always stimulated by my surroundings. I can sit and see a color scheme and think, oh that would look fabulous on the eye or, that would make a beautiful lip color. So I am inspired by a lot. BNY: Do you have a signature look? Yes. I would categorize my craft more as a beauty makeup artist. I love to enhance a woman’s natural beauty. Every once in a while, I will have a client who requires more of a contoured look. For me, it’s not about altering the face, so I would rather make her look beautiful and enhanced. Something the client can achieve on a daily basis, instead of having to utilize me on a daily basis, to help maintain that type of look. BNY: What do you love about makeup? I love the fact that, with makeup it allows you to be able to create. As an artist every new face, is a new canvas. When I worked for MAC, I was that girl who never turned down

BELLE NEW YORK MAGAzINE

the opportunity to serve a client. For me, it challenged me to be able to serve more diverse clients, not just people who look like me. BNY: What is it about your style that sets you apart from other makeup artist? Most of my clients I have served for years. They will not go to anyone else. They always know, they are going to get quality. They always know, they are going to get great customer service. Yes, I am a celebrity makeup artist, but all of my clients are celebrities to me. I treat all my clients with the same level of service. BNY: Can you name a few celebrity clients you have enjoyed working with? Chemistry is everything. I like to have a good vibe with people, so I would have to say Lalah Hathaway, who I have done makeup for. I love her. Very calm and carefree. Michelle Williams of Destiny’s Child, was a great client to work with at the BET HONORS. Kerry Washington was an amazing client and her spirit was really sweet. I also enjoyed working with Eric Benét. I have had an opportunity to work with a lot of amazing people, which is a blessing. BNY: What advice would you offer to someone interested in the industry? Maintain a level of being trained. This industry is an ever developing field. For the first few years in makeup artistry, work at a counter. If someone walks up, they want something. Treat everyone as a client. This has helped me achieve number one in sales, because every customer was special. Be sincere. At the end of the day, we give a service, so you have to get to know your clients. I know working at Nordstrom’s for ten years, has helped me develop as an artist.

BEAUTY THE ART OF MAKEUP

Beauty tips: Common beauty mistakes when applying makeup. You have to know your features. Where to play it up and where to play it down. How often should make up brushes be washed and what is the best method? Clean brushes at least once a week using brush cleaners. What is the best method to eliminate and/or hide dark circles under the eyes? Dark circles are usually hereditary or because of diet. Applying an eye cream will help with the hydration. Eye creams take away the darkness, but finish up with a concealer. What is the secret to getting foundation to look flawless all day? My favorite product for the skin is Milk of Magnesia. It has the same properties as a Primer so it keeps the skin matted all day. Dilute it 50/50 with water or if you have extremely oily skin, you can put it on your face without diluting it. This has been a makeup artist secret for years. Smashbox Total Finish Primer is another good product. Those are my favorite two secret products. What is the best method when choosing the correct foundation for your face? There is a chemistry to makeup. Most people need three types of foundations, unless the foundation is sheer. When you look at your face naturally you have so many different tones. Generally, the darkest is around the perimeter, the lightest is around the center. So you want to bring back in that natural contrast of the face when applying foundation. Otherwise your face will look muted.

EASY

DIY BLUSH & LIP GLOSS

Easy DIY Beet Blush The color of fresh, organic beets is unmatched. Beets give a natural, healthy glow to pretty much all shades of skin without the creepy dangers of chemical-laden makeup. Natural blush and lip gloss possibilities are now available, using a variety of oils and natural combinations, including strawberries. In the end, three simple ingredients are all you need. The result will give you a powder blush and a super moisturizing lip gloss that doubles as a cheek stain made in under 10 minutes, if you don’t include dehydrating time. You can keep your creation to 10 minutes though, if you just want to buy organic beet root powder instead of making your own with the dehydrator. Give it a try! Tools: Small glass lip gloss container(s) (recycle if you can, or use old Burt’s Bees containers.) Small saucepan Glass measuring cup or something similar Dehydrator and coffee grinder (optional, only needed for making your own beet powder) Fine mesh piece of fabric like muslin Ingredients: 1 tsp Organic Almond oil 1 tsp Organic Beet Root Powder (you can easily make your own with a dehydrator and a coffee grinder. Read below.) 1 tsp 100% Pure Lanolin (shea butter works well, too) Make your own beet powder If you have a dehydrator, and you would like to make your own beet root powder, it is incredibly easy to do. Using a mandolin slicer or a sharp knife, slice your beet into very thin strips and lay on the dehydrator screen. Place in a dehydrator set to a temp of about 100°F and dehydrate for 8-10 hours. Overnight is perfect. Once thoroughly dried, crunch up beet chips with your hands and place in the coffee grinder. Pulse until beets are a fine powder with no bits. This beet powder is a natural blush! So easy. Just put some of this ground powder in a glass jar and use as you would any loose powder blush. Store in a dark, cool place.

Making your lip gloss/cheek stain Fill a small saucepan with about 1 cup of water and place a glass measuring cup inside it. Turn your range on to low heat. Place your lanolin and almond oil inside the measuring cup and stir until melted. Once melted, add your beet root powder and stir until thoroughly mixed. Now just pour your mixture through the fabric to strain out any gritty particles. Twist the fabric to squeeze/wring it out. If you still see tiny beet root particles, run the mixture through again. Now, place into a tiny glass jar and allow to cool. Use on your lips and or rub into cheeks for a truly healthy glow. Substitutions: 1. Dehydrate strawberries, grind up (for fragrance and color) and mix with beet root powder and oils, or keep as a powder. 2. Add some mica powder to your mix for a bit of shimmer. 3. Can’t find lanolin? Warm and mix 1 tsp coconut oil, 1 tsp beeswax pellets (or candelilla wax) and 1-1/2 tsp beet root powder for a lip and cheek stain. Visit yumuniverse.com for further details.

BEAUTY DO IT YOURSELF THE PERFECT MANICURE Eliminate embarrassing nails. 10 Steps to getting the perfect nails you deserve.

1.

PREPARE YOUR NAILS Remove any old nail polish with polish remover. Then wash hands.

2.

BUFF and FILE Eliminate ragged nail edges. Slightly BUFF the top of your nails with a nail buffer (NOT a nail file)

3.

PUSH BACK YOUR CUTICLES Use a nail oil/lotion or coconut oil to soften your cuticles. Rest the tips of your fingernails in a small bowl for a few minutes if using oil.

4.

EXFOLIATE YOUR HANDS Use honey and brown sugar or an over the counter product to exfoliate. This helps eliminate dry skin cells. Wash and dry hands.

5.

APPLY BASE COAT Prepare your nails for colored polish by applying a base coat. This step will eliminate discoloration of nails. Let it set for about two minutes.

6.

APPLY POLISH Apply light coat of polish to fresh nails. Start from the back and work your way down. Wait two minutes.

7.

REAPPLY Apply second coat. Depending on type of polish you may need a third coat. Avoid being too heavy on polish to eliminate easy smearing.

8.

APPLY TOP COAT Using a top coat protects nails from chipping and makes them shiny.

9.

DRY Let nails drive for approximately five minutes

BEAUTY CELEBRITY STYLIST

CHARLENE BROWN

CELEBRITY

HAIR STYLIST Charlene Brown a multi-talented stylist, and hair care guru, is certainly in demand when it comes to styling celebrity clients, and styling hair to perfection. A native of the Washington Metro Politian area, she has such a quiet and humble spirit, but she knows how to make a bold statement when it comes to styling hair. Her talent has led her to travel across the globe, to service clients for fashion shows, red carpet events as well as television. We had the honor to sit down with her to talk about hair and to gain an insight into her world and how she keeps climbing her way to the top of the industry.

When did you realize you wanted to pursue a career as a stylist? I started off styling my Barbie dolls hair, then graduated to a stationary mannequin head. In high school, I took advantage of our free cosmetology program. To practice my craft, I started styling my neighbors hair in my kitchen, cutting and curling their hair. I really learned from styling and braiding their hair. After graduation, I was invited to be the first lead junior hairstylist at a salon and then I started my own salon. Now I style hair for photo shoots, BET, fashion shows, and television shows. My next goal is to style hair for film and movies. What type of hairstyle would you recommend for someone who is in a professional environment, but wants to keep their personal style? As a stylist it is important to style a person’s hair according

to their occupation. Someone working in the professional field, I wouldn’t recommend any trendy hairstyles. I would recommend something more settle or calm. A nice bob hairstyle, nothing with a lot of flare to it, just professional and clean. If you didn’t want to cut your hair, but wanted to keep up with the trends, what are some options a person should explore? There are many tools that you can use, such as wigs to change your look, but you have to take care of your hair underneath the wig. One of the trendy looks are the lace front wigs, with the invisible parts, again they are trendy, but still professional. Another trend is additional hairpieces added to the hair to give the hair a different look. With both of these looks, you must take care of your hair

BELLE NEW YORK MAGAzINE

underneath with oiling your scalp. I know this is another trend, but you need some type of oil in your scalp when wearing hairweave and/or wigs. Which celebrity icons have you enjoyed working with? Tia Maurey was an inspirational client for me. I was fortunate to style her hair twice and give her haircare advice on how to both style and take care of her hair. She was very appreciative and took my advice and requested me for a second booking. What is the best hair regimen for women wearing their hair natural through the seasons? As a stylist, natural haircare is a booming business. Although I am not a natural hair stylist, I do and can style natural hair. Some of my clients who have converted back to natural, want their hair to flow. During the winter and fall is good for blowouts and the spring and summer is usually worn naturally curly. When was the moment you realized you made it? I think when I styled my first celebrity client, I felt like I achieved great success. Then I realized I still had a long way to go. Being referred is a great thing especially when celebrities come in to town. I am the go to stylist which is a blessing. Was their ever a moment in your career when you felt like throwing in the towel? As I got older, I felt like I was getting too old to continue my career. Three years ago, I remembered attending a makeup seminar and I met Queen Latifahs makeup artist. I asked her if I getting too old to start in the film industry? She told me you are never too old to be in the industry. She told me she was sixty-three and that I still had time to continue my career. I took her advice and now every year I look forward to seeing what’s next. What is the one thing you would run into a burning building to save? My hair kit! My equipment is expensive! Where is Charlene Brown going to be ten years from now? I will be in LA working on various films as the key hairstylist. Facebook: Charlene Brown Twitter @Charlenebrownhair Instagram: CharleneBrown1

Textured Talk By Natural

Hair for Real

MOISTURE! Finding the perfect balance

How do you achieve it? How can you keep it? Those are the most frequent questions asked by those with textured hair. Here are a few ways to achieve moisturized hair. Be sure to check the water you are using. You want to make sure you are not using hard water which will strip your hair of moisture. How can you be sure you do not have hard water? One way is to check to see if you have lime scale build up which will be on the showerhead and in the toilet. Another way is to check the ingredients in your products, particularly your leave in conditioners. Water should be the first ingredient listed. Other moisturizing ingredients should include, aloe vera, behentrimonium methosulfate (BTMS), marshmallow root, and irish moss. When applying products to your natural hair, Ensure you are using enough product. Start with a small amount for each section working it through your hair.

After applying product, gently pull your hair from the end. If you pull your hair and it does not bounce back, you may have used too much product. If you pull your hair and it does bounce back, you have used enough product. Now that you have achieved the right amount of moisture, lock it in by applying a holding product. Look for products with cream, butter or gel in the name. Ingredients for hold should include the following. Shea Butter, Aloe Vera Gel, Flax Seed, Glycerin, Guar Gum, Xanthum Gum, This list is not exhaustive. Part of the healthy hair journey is experimenting and trying what works for you. For your own personal session, be sure to send me an email to schedule an over the phone consultation to get you on the right track to healthier hair.

Looks for Weekend

THE LOOK

Less… By Shawana Gatlin

Who doesn’t love stylish, funky, chic attire that’s affordable? Clothes that scream “I look like a million bucks” when you’ve paid nowhere near that! Clothes that will make the next person stop, look, and pay attention. There was once a time when one outfit cost nearly your entire paycheck; all depending on how much you were willing to invest. Many of us don’t have the luxury to walk around in $300 jeans and $500 dollar shoes or carry $3,000 handbags. Doesn’t mean a girl can’t dream.

FOR LESS

With all the competition in the world of fashion, retailers want to keep their customers, as well as secure new ones. Therefore, what better way to do that than to reasonably price their garments so that consumers find their way back to them. So, what does that mean for you? You can still live for the weekend and still have money in your wallet when you return to work on Monday, instead of listening to the O’Jays sing ‘Living for the Weekend!’ Go ahead and throw away your receipts because you won’t be making any returns.

GET THE LOOK

Weekend looks are super affordable these days, so you can still get ‘the look’ for less, while spending the exact opposite! Here are six fabulous looks that will have you looking chic, but you won’t have to break the bank.

BET HONORS A NIGHT TO REMEMBER By Shawana Gatlin

The BET HONORS established in 2008 to honor the lives of African American achievers, is never a disappointment and lives up to its name every year. Like in years past, many came together for the 2015 BET Honors, a night of achievements, many in the fields of music, education, entertainment, technology and business. Tonight was no different. It was a night to shine, as celebrities took their rightful place on the red carpet.

CEO and Chairman of BET Debra L. Lee, looked absolutely stunning in a lace, off the shoulder black cocktail dress, although nothing compared to her most beautiful asset; her smile. Kim Kardashian and Kanye West the face of Balmain SS15 campaign, rocked in matching all black outfits by Balmain. Kim looked demure in her fitting black gown as she walked the red carpet in support of her husbandBELLE being for the Visionary award. Kanye looked very NEWhonored YORK MAGAzINE MARCH/APRIL polished in his black silk lapel jacket, buttoned down shirt and tailed black pants.

Usher, who always keeps it casual, graced the red carpet with his all black ensemble and sneakers, added a touch of panache with his key accessory…his hat! He was honored for the Musical Arts Award. FASHION STYLED – JODY DAVIS

Styled

Through her eyes

Jody DAVIS The designer Jody Davis’s unique sense of style started back in high school; receiving the best dressed student award. Although she loved to look good, she didn’t realize this was her true passion. In fact, her first love was to be a Veterinarian. It wasn’t until her dog fell ill, frighten, she realized this was not the career path for her. After high school she started experimenting with sowing and received compliments from the small items she was creating. Still not taking her sowing skills seriously, she thought the compliments were just flattery, until she started receiving compliments from strangers. Years had gone by before she would later realize, her talent was a gift from God and not just a hobby. “If you doYORK something you love, BELLE NEW MAGAzINE

you will never have to work a day in your life” MARCH/APRIL

After working a number of years in the government, Jody decided to apply to the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York. Initially she was not accepted, although the counselor liked her designs and the construction of her garments, her sketching needed to be enhanced. The counselor suggested she take classes in Baltimore. After a semester in Baltimore, she did reapply. As fate would have it, she received the same counselor. Jody explained to the counselor her suggestion to take classes in Baltimore and that she took her advice and received all A’s in her required classes. The counselor was so impressed by her ambition, she told her she didn’t need to see her portfolio “because your determination showed me that you really want this.” Graduating from FIT in both Fashion and Accessory Design, the Baltimore native, relocated to the Washington, DC area and started building her client base while working at Neiman Marcus for seven years. Her boss at the time saw more potential in her than what Neiman Marcus was able to offer. One day she told Jody, “Either you are going to quit, or I am going to fire you because you are too gifted and too talented to stay here making excuses as to why you’re not pursuing your dreams.” That was a big turning point for her to pursue her passion and go after her dreams. After leaving Neiman Marcus, she turned her basement into a studio, while continuing to build her clients. In 2007, Jody was invited to a brunch with her girlfriends who suggested she bring a couple samples of her work, so those who were attending could see what she was doing. The women who were there were so impressed, they suggested Jody put together a trunk show and they would all help with pulling it together. With the success of her first show, the next day one of her beau’s vendors came into town and stopped by her boutique where she modeled various pieces from the show. He was so impressed with her work, he told her she was 95% ahead of most people who were in the business or who was trying to pursue a dream. He invited her to California to mentor her in perfecting her patterns and her garments as well as to discuss manufacturing so she could get her clothing into stores. Who was your biggest fashion influence while attending FIT? I wasn’t really inspired by any

fashion house while I was in school. While attending school, I would go to the high end fashion department stores, like Barney’s and Bergdorf Goodman, even when I had twenty-five cents to my name. I would go and look at the garments, look the construction, trim and how it was draped. I found draping to be one of the big take away from school. Even though I learned how to drape, it took me many years before I utilized that skill. I still have the dress form from school and I still use her. That’s how I made my first pattern sample. One of my top inspirational designers who is no longer around, is Alexander McQueen. I love his work. Jean Paul Gaultier is another designer that I was really inspired by. When I was in school, I interned for Donna Karan, which I was told by the company, my ideas were so creative they thought that I would maybe steal some of their ideas. I think that was just a way to flatter the interns. While in school, different people from the industry would come and speak to us. One of the persons I was really touched by was Oscar de la Renta. It was so amazing to sit in a room with someone who had reached such success and held such a powerful name. Who is Jody Davis the designer, the brand? Jody Davis, is a woman who loves femininity. I design dresses that make you feel feminine. Make you feel powerful, and confident all in a classy style. The dresses I create, you can wear it today and still wear it five years from now. I have clients who are still wearing pieces that I designed for them ten to fifteen years ago. One thing about fashion, it is constantly repeating itself. So I have to say Jody Davis designs are for women who want to look good, and who travel. They are business women, they are mothers, and they are women who speak in front of an audience or sit behind a desk. My garments make you feel comfortable in your own skin. My garments are for the all-around woman. What do you find to be the most challenging in the industry? Finances can be the most challenging. As your company grows with creating and designing a line, your finances grow. For example, to create my first line, it may have cost twenty thousand dollars and that is money that you have to put up front before you sell any garments. The challenge is, when you create a piece, while some of your designs are big sellers,

BELLE NEW YORK MAGAzINE

MARCH/APRIL

other items are slow movers. Some top companies work under different brands because they have the freedom to create and not be restricted financially. The second challenge for me is, I wear all the hats. Because I am building my brand, I am the designer, the pattern maker, I meet with the production team and I run the boutique. Although I am a one woman show right now, I am gradually building a team. The reality is, a lot of small businesses are run by just one or two persons. So when you start to get help is when you can see your business start to explode. I’m fortune now to have people coming on board, who see the vision and they believe in the product. I would have never found this success had I given up. You know there are many times when you think this is too hard and I just need to find a 9-5. But as I continue to push, God continues to bring people into my path that tells me to keep going. What is the biggest fashion risk you have taken and what did you learn from it? The biggest fashion risk I’ve taken is to create a line without any input and insight from my clients. I’ve learned that not everything is going to be a big seller, but some things are going to sell where you will need to manufacture more. One of the things I have learned was to have a trunk show where I could show pieces from my collection and clients could place their orders in advance. This can also be a challenge because what I have found is, when I did the presale the production took a lot longer than I anticipated or I didn’t get as many orders as I anticipated. So I had to hold off on production until I received more orders. Sometimes it is a juggling act. What I have learned is, you learn from those mistakes. You figure out what works and what doesn’t, then you perfect those things that work and those that don’t, you’ve learned from the mistakes. How are you able to balance your busy work schedule, while being able to take some time out for yourself? I don’t get a lot of down time, but I go to the gym to workout. My beau has a men’s clothing boutique so we are both in the same industry and both understand the hustle and bustle of being in this business. Because his boutique is right around the corner from mine, we get to see each other throughout the day. You have to find the time to have a personal life; to go out to dinner with family and friends. As you continue to build your brand, the downtime that I

do have, I try to make sure I spend it with those I enjoy being with. Do you have a mentor? Yes. My mentor is Everett Hall, who is a men’s wear designer. He owns a boutique on Wisconsin Avenue, and he has probably been there for twenty years now. I remember a time when I was working at Neiman Marcus and I would go to him for advice and he would never give me any information. The week I left Neiman Marcus, and I’m not sure how he knew, but he called me. I was thinking what did I do to deserve a call from Mr. Everett Hall, because he is the first black designer to show at New York Fashion Week many years ago? This is actually how I met him; they were at a trade show. He said I am available for lunch at one o’clock. When your mentor, who doesn’t always give you a lot of time, you find the time to meet. One of the things he said was “when a student is ready, the teacher will come.” He said that because he was waiting on me to leave Neiman Marcus. “You can keep on talking about what you’re going to do, how you’re going to do it, but it wasn’t until you decided to leave is when I saw that you were serious.” He also said, “You used to come over and ask me questions, but I would never really give you the answers, because people come to me all the time and ask questions, like how did I become successful. But you would ask questions and I would never give you the answers, but you would always have a look on your face like, you’re not going to give me the answer, but I’m going to find it anyway” He said those were the things that intrigued him. A year or two later after the ESSENCE Festival he said to me, “I’m really proud of you. Keep doing what you are doing. You are on the rise and you are now ready for television.” I couldn’t figure out why he said that, but it was a blessing to have a mentor who is giving you tips on how to run a business or how to start manufacturing or what companies to contact and what steps to take. As he continues to see me grow, for your mentor to tell you, you are ready for the next step is a great feeling. What do you hope to achieve in this industry? My goal is to continue to build a brand and to become a household name, like a Donna Karan or Calvin Klein. There are not very many designers of color that have reached the magnitude of being known on a larger scale. The ones who have, are considered to be more on the hip hop end or who

FASHION STYLED – JODY DAVIS create urban wear. I want to be known as the designer that creates fabulous dresses or pieces for women who want to look amazing and not have to compromise on style. What is Jody’s story? I have been gifted with a talent and I have been blessed with the fortitude to pursue my dreams. There were many times I didn’t have a dime in my pocket and I wasn’t sure where my next meal was going to come from. Even when I moved to New York, I had seventeen dollars to my name. Although I had a fully furnished apartment, I sold everything I had so I could move to New York and go to school and get my degree. So Jody’s story is, you can’t listen to the naysayers. I am thankful and blessed to have positive people who continue to encourage me to keep going. You also have to be positive within yourself for those times when there’s nobody around and you are wearing all the hats. When you are exhausted and you have to stay up all night and be up early the next day, you have to stay motivated. To be designing pieces for some of the known celebrities like Iyanla Vanzant, Traci Braxton, Lisa Raye, Chaka Khan and Patti LaBelle, who was my first celebrity client; I get joy out of it. But I get just as much pleasure to see, and not just celebrities, but women in general, being so excited to feel so feminine, powerful and sexy when they put on one of my dresses. I love to be in my studio designing because I love what I do, because Jody is fashion. What encouragement would you offer someone who needs the courage to pursue their dreams? We all have only one life and once you find your dream or have a dream within in, you can start to pursue it. If you have a fulltime job, start pursuing your dream at night. A lot of people feel like there

is never the right time, or I don’t have enough money. There is always going to be excuses, but you have to let your passion and your dreams precede your excuses. And at some point, you are going to have to say to yourself, I have to let go. It’s been about fifteen years since I left Neiman Marcus. I visited six month ago and I ran into an old colleague and he said to me, “Jody you are one of the ones who got away.” I didn’t really understand what he meant at that time, but as I walked through Neiman’s I saw about ten or twelve people that I used to work with. Many who had dreams and passions, but you know you let that fear hold you back, thinking, oh I’ll do it next year, or the next year then time continues to pass you by. It gets to the point where people feel, ‘oh I’m too old’ or this is happening. We all have family life, we all have responsibilities that we have to deal with every day. You cannot keep letting time slip away. You don’t want to look back at life and say I should have done this, or I should have taken that opportunity when it presented itself. You have to go with it now.

FASHION STYLE ICON

RIHANNA By Taylor Johnson Many have tried to capture America’s attention with their fashion dos and don’ts, but what keeps Rihanna on top of her game? None other than her fashion stylist Mel Ottenberg. Pop sensation Rihanna has not only made her mark in music, but she has also captured the hearts of fashion lovers all over the world. Just last year, the “Good Girl Gone Bad” won the style icon award which was given to her by the Council of Fashion Designers of America. She graced the CDFA red carpet in a daring number that literally turned heads. But let’s not forget the infamous sheer Adam Selman gown she wore that sent the fashion world into a frenzy. But that isn’t the first time Rihanna caught the attention of the fashion industry. After coming on to the scene in 2005 with her debut album, “Music of the Sun”, Rihanna played it safe. She had Beyoncé-like hair and a typical industry look. There was nothing that truly “stood out” about her personal style. That was until 2007 when Rihanna finally arrived. Her bad girl look changed the way the world saw her forever. From her daring haircuts to her edgy style of dress, Rihanna took off instantly and is still carrying the momentum. Mel Ottenberg, who some would consider a fashion style genius, is the man behind her iconic style choices. He has been working with the music and fashion sensation since 2011. As Rihanna made her way up the fashion tier, Ottenberg went right along with her. He is responsible for many of Rihanna’s best looks such as her white Stella McCartney Gown that was worn to the 2014 Met Gala, “Loud” tour costumes, Paris Fashion Week looks, “We Found Love” video styles and of course her recent pink Giambattista Valli Haute Couture gown that drew much attention at the 2015 Grammy Awards. It has been Ottenberg’s duty to stay ahead of Rihanna and her style. This shows why Rihanna is always at the fashion forefront. Not only on red carpets, but on the covers and spreads of many high-fashion magazines. In a recent interview with the New York Times he was quoted as saying, “Working with her is really fulfilling.” Whether she’s dressing up or dressing down, Rihanna is having fun with it. And just as the year is beginning, expect Rihanna to continue to rock the fashion world in 2015. BELLE NEW YORK MAGAzINE

THE HOUSE THAT JENNIFER BUILT “My greatest joy and strength has come from the girls in our care; they are the true hero’s.”

J

ennifer Unangst the founder of House of Engedi, graduated from Cornerstone School of Ministry at Calvary Chapel Corvallis in 2012. It was there, in December, God birthed the vision to open a safe house for adult survivors of Sex trafficking in Oregon. Her story didn’t start there, but was a story of lost hope and pain. As a young child she endured many years of sexual abuse by the hand of her own father. A father who was sworn to protect her, but was faced with his own demons with alcohol abuse. As a teen, she tried to numb the pain from the years of trauma with drugs and alcohol, which led her to spiral out of control. After many suicide attempts, homelessness and dabbling in the sex industry, her life was completely and totally restored thanks to a program like House of Engedi. It was at the age 18, when she walked through the door, literally right out of the gutter, after what seemed like a lifetime of darkness, pain, and abuse. She was welcomed into the program with open arms. The sensation of feeling like she was finally home, and experiencing true unconditional love for the first time in her young life, she allowed the healing process to begin. The day after arriving, she invited Jesus into her heart and hasn’t been the same since. Being in the program, taught her that she had worth and value beyond what life had shown her and there was a purpose for her life. It was her pain and memories that turned her passion and love for the lost and hurting. With her God given desire and passion for women and children caught up in the horrors of modern day slavery, House of Engedi became a reality in 2013. “I have had the honor of supporting many survivors of sex trafficking over the years. I have witnessed true miracles and life change just by being a friend and offering unconditional love to these hurting and broken precious ones. I have watched them take that first step towards freedom. In the beginning they start out withdrawn and unable to smile or laugh, but when offered love, help and support they begin to flourish. Over the weeks and months, I began to see hope in their eyes. They began to laugh, cry and experience life for the first time as they were no longer oppressed. My greatest joy and strength has come from the girls in our care; they are the true hero’s.” House of Engedi recently merged with Compassion First to help stop sexual human trafficking. “Because Compassion First has BELLE NEW YORK MAGAzINE

always been a friend and supporter to our ministry, the founding board and I didn't hesitate for a minute to ask them to take on our vision and help us launch into a new and improved, bigger and better organization than we could ever have imagined. No words can describe my gratitude towards Compassion First for accepting the offer to take us on as their own. They truly exemplify love and compassion in such a way that I had always dreamed it to be. I am truly blessed and proud to say that I am now part of the Compassion First family, working locally and abroad as one team, unstoppable and truly anointed.” Jennifer also gives thanks for all those who cared enough for her to see her heal and to be able to restart her life. “I was equipped and empowered by a small group of Christian women that would literally change the course of my life. I've not only seen the evidence of healing through long-term care facilities, but have experienced firsthand what love can do. After all, it was love that changed my heart. The love I received from the residence and staff and the love I was shown by my heavenly Father who rescued me. Her story was also featured on the 700 club. Speaking over your LIFE cheryl WOOD with

“When you learn, teach, when you get, give.”

C

heryl Wood is one of the most dynamic and empowering women speakers on the rise. Her sold out conferences and speaking events is a sure sign she is doing something right. A wife and a mother of three, she stays on the go as an international traveler, but finds the time to enjoy family life along with her work life. Cheryl’s entrepreneurial journey started almost six years ago. In 2009, she was in a place where she felt disconnected from life. Her 9-5 corporate job as she knew it, was sitting in a 10x10 cubicle, forget a view, as an office secretary, shuffling papers. Living the life of a routine zombie, and the feeling of being smothered and stuck was overwhelming and she knew that was not the life for her. Also being in the corporate arena, she realized, she wasn’t creating a legacy nor in a position where she was setting up a life of generational wealth. That feeling of being “set up” as life would have it, was starting to sink in. Tired of the constant and daily routine of dropping off her children at six o’clock in the morning at daycare, then not being able to pick them up until six o’clock in the evening, was starting to get old. This routine made her feel like she was not the mother she wanted to be. There was a pulling in her spirit that was telling her, “Cheryl you know this is not something you should be doing. There is something more for you.” So she decided to start her entrepreneurial journey. Without any guidance or a mentor, her determination kept her motivated to stay on the path, knowing she was about to change her reality and the reality of her family. That drive led her to a journey to start a t-shirt business “Moms are the Best” incorporated with empowering slogans for moms. This experience gave her a taste of what it was like to be an entrepreneur. With this new business, one of the things she learned, you have to learn to explore to figure out where you are really meant to be. As we progress in life we would like to look back and say ‘oh I knew what I was going to be… when I was…’ Well, it didn’t happen that way for Cheryl. It had been eighteen months on her entrepreneur grind, telling everybody who would listen about her t-shirt business, she received an unexpected invitation to speak at Morgan State Universities Annual Women’s Conference, an audience of over two hundred women. Upon receiving the invitation she initially BELLE NEW YORK MAGAzINE

thought, “You must have the wrong person, because I am not a speaker.” Quickly realizing that they were talking about her, they wanted her to speak from the experience of being a mother who had a busy life, but was pursing something different. As well as share her experience of building the foundation to run a business. Although this was her first time speaking in front of an audience, she knew she had to push herself beyond her comfort zone. “Every time you say no, everyone of your no’s becomes someone else’s yes and pushes them forward on their journey. You have to have that boldness, to say yes, even when it seems scary.” As a full time speaker, Cheryl lives by the quote of the late Maya Angelou, “When you learn, teach, when you get, give.” “This quote reminds me, I have a responsibility to use those life experiences that I have gained over time. In my journey as an entrepreneur to help someone else and not to withhold that knowledge. There is no value in it, if I don’t share it with someone else. One of the most important traits as a speaker is to know where your audience is coming from. “You have to understand your audience is going through a struggle that you have gone through. So when you have empathy with the people who are sitting in front of you, you have to understand, they are hungry for some type of transformation and you want them to see themselves in you. To realize that if you have created a shift in your life, they can create one too. So it’s more than just getting on stage and speaking, it’s about helping to transform lives.” To book Cheryl for your next speaking event, contact her at www.cherylwoodempower.com

Empowering minds & changing lives

A

ri Squires is a DREAMER, a DOER, a THINKER and she see’s possibility everywhere and in everyone. At a very young age she experienced what is was like to have low self-esteem. The feeling of being lost like so many other young girls and teens are experiencing today. Being in dark place, she knew wanted to be in a position to help young girls who were also struggling. One of her desires was to be able to provide a platform, for girls to be able to shine, to be great and to discover their truth. He own mission of self-discovery led her to open a diversity dance and performing arts studio for girls in her community in the Fredericksburg, VA area. Creating a bond with the teen girls, they felt comfortable around Ari, and started sharing their problems with her. Although she was looked up to and respected, they felt really comfortable around her. Seeing this need is what led her to start her mentoring program ‘Elevate Her’ for young girls. Although there is a mentoring need for boys as well, her reasoning for mentoring girls is because she could relate to what they were going through. “I think the reason why we don’t have many programs for guys is because we need men to step up and provide these programs, but there is not enough of them doing it. That’s why I can relate to girls, because I’ve been there, I know their struggles and their pain.” Not only is Ari a mentor to young girls, she also mentors women who are looking to transition into being an Entrepreneur with her Life Coaching and Success Coaching program. She knows the importance of not only being a coach, but being coached. “The biggest thing I've learned from my mentor is to stop looking for answers "out there" (meaning externally), but instead start looking ‘inside.’ From there I started seeing shifts taking place. I began noticing anxiety fading and being replaced with a peaceful sense of contentment within myself. And all of the things I had wanted for so long began to come to me effortlessly. She encouraged me to reconnect with my power within to create the life I want to live.” The competition between women can be really fierce, so having a strong support system and a strong coach is very important. When a client is coached by Ari, she helps her clients through what she calls “release chains” which are limiters, stories that we keep in our minds that hold us back. “A session with me, I help my clients peel back those layers, no matter what it is. I hold my clients hope and desires in my heart, because I want to see them become successful. It is hard to find people who is going to provide you with wisdom and resources. thing I have ever done for myself and I see the results from clients. Again, helping them to pull back the layers that is holding them back, so they can start to live out their dreams.” What is holding people back from achieving success? Why are people not going after their dreams? If you took a poll and asked those who wanted to start a business, especially women, the number one answer would be time. People generally feel like there isn’t enough time in the day to do everything. Who says everything has to be done in a day? I know this is so cliché, but doesn’t every successful person have the same amount of hours in the day? “You just have to learn to manage your time. Life is life and something will always happen, but you have to learn how to be really strict on your time. You cannot do everything, so you have to learn to say no. If you don’t, you will never be able to get anything done.” Not only is it important for those who want to go after their dreams to make time, but to also see the possibility and the results of taking the time to pursue those dreams. “Writing the book “All I See Is Possibilities” I wanted women and young girls to realize the power they have within them to procreate their lives and to see the possibilities. This book is about digging deep within yourself and taking steps on learning how to connect with your intuition. As well as learning how to harness affirmation. Because we can speak it all day long, but if you don’t feel it and believe it, then we won’t achieve those things we desire.” If you are looking for a free 30 minute consultation, you can reach R Ari on her website at www.arisquires.com

LIFESTYLE 30 MINUTES A DAY

By Shereé Parker

30 Minutes a Day Lifestyle

1 Prioritize: Organize your tasks according to importance and complete those expectations prior to taking your 30 minute time-out which will allow you to relax without feeling under pressure. Since there’s only 24 hours in a day, we have been condition to pack it with as much as possible. So with that being said, how do you find time to recharge? It is pivotal that you make time in your daily routine to take time out for yourself which would provide you with the opportunity to relax and reflect.

How many of us would love to take 30-minutes out of our day to take a nap, a short stroll on the beach or sit in the park admiring the scenery? I know that sounds great and inviting but do we do it? First, you must ask yourself, how often do I make time to practice self-care and what does that look like? As a parent, business owner, student, full-time employee or a combination, you may be feeling overwhelmed and overworked. But did you know, finding 30 minutes daily to relax could bring ultimate joy to your life? By Shreé Parker

2

Delegate: Instead of trying to do everything yourself that will increase the load of your schedule, assign others to take over responsibilities that will free you up to take a break. Relinquishing control is imperative, as it will allow you to step away to take some time to regain focus. One may ask, how would I do that? The answer to that is simple: give yourself a break from your daily routines and responsibilities.

Have a set schedule:

3

Everyday set your alarm clock on your cell phone as a reminder to step away at a specific time to get your individual time whether it’s to eat lunch by yourself or to sit alone in silence. Relaxation can occur in many forms, from taking a yoga class, getting a massage, lighting candles while listening to your favorite music or reading a book that you have been putting off. These breaks give you the chance to rediscover the interests or hobbies that you once enjoyed before becoming consumed by your daily obligations.

4

Elicit an accountability partner: Your accountability

partner will assist in holding you accountable for making time to take daily breaks. Your partner can be a significant other, family member, co-worker or friend. Factoring 30 minutes of downtime presents you with a chance to recommit to taking care of yourself. This is very important in order to maintain balance in all areas of your life, which includes health and mental wellness. BELLE NEW YORK MAGAzINE

LIFESTYLE LIVING YOUR BEST

CREATE YOUR LIFE HANDBOOK Your Personal Manuel to Living Your Best Life By Shereé Parker

Do you ever feel like the trials and tribulations from life are depleting you spiritually, emotionally and mentally but you don’t know how to fix it? Do you find yourself asking the following questions: How can I make my life better? How do I know if I am living on purpose? When should I seek help from others? Ask yourself this question, am I willing to work hard to live the best possible life if I was given the tools to do so? We all have these burning questions about whether or not we are walking in our purpose and living the life that God has planned for us. Wouldn’t it be a blessing if you were able to have all those questions answered with the necessary tools to execute your plan to living your best life in 2015? Let’s get started today using the following tips as a guide to helping you learn how to live your best life: Let faith lead you: If you believe it, you can achieve it. Sometimes we doubt our capabilities, which causes us to not work to our full potential. Spending time in prayer will not only give you guidance, but clarity regarding your next move. Make positive affirmation cards that you can use every day to help you to eliminate self-doubt and to propel you forward. Place your affirmation cards in your bedroom, in your office or on the bathroom mirror at home as a reminder and motivator. Make a list of goals: Make a list of goals, you would like to achieve. It is important to develop goals that are realistic. Keep the list short and to the point so that you are setting yourself up for success. Break your list down into simple steps or objectives so you don’t feel overwhelmed. The purpose of making a list, is to help you see your next move towards success. Be sure to check off each goal as you complete them. Each checked goal represents, you’re one step closer to achieving your objectives. Learn to love yourself: Be prepared to take the bull by the horns and make things happen. Don’t let other people’s opinions stop you from walking towards your dreams. If you’re not your biggest fan, how can you expect others to cheer for you? Having self-love will aid you in making decisions that are best suited for you and the life you desire. Use positive self-talk skills daily (“I can do it”, “I am wonderfully made”) to get you through your day. Prayer is key: Prayer is a way to stay in touch with God and to share what’s going on in your life. Prayer provides you with an opportunity to gain inner peace through releasing your thoughts and feelings so you’re not wondering through life with confusion that will deter you from focusing on your calling. Get in the habit of seeking out God through prayer every day for validation, guidance and understanding whether it’s in the morning, afternoon or evening. BELLE NEW YORK MAGAzINE

Maintain a level of balance: Be empowered to live, love and make mistakes. Don’t focus so much on trying to do everything and all things right. Make time to do things that will make you happy and provide you with a sense of freedom and contentment whether it’s on a professional level or in the form of extracurricular activities. Investing too much energy into a multitude of things at one time can create an imbalance that will impact your ability to sustain the best life that you want to live. Schedule one social activity per week that you would enjoy as the goal is to be able to have a fulfilling life that is a balance of work and play. BELLE NEW YORK MAGAzINE

LIFESTYLE SIMPLE HEALTH

Going Green!

As we all know, great skin requires very little daily maintenance and makes us feel naturally beautiful, so we both save time on regimens and applications, and add up on confidence if we follow these five simple rules: 1.

Juice up! Yes, we’ve all heard it by now, but truly, juicing on a daily or at least a few times a week will change your skin drastically. Keep it as green as possible, organic and stock up on cucumber (silica) and celery (hydration/anti-inflammatory) specifically.

2.

Add a few bits of raw ginger (cut up the root, peel it or leave as is) to your green juice. If you are not juicing, just put a few slices in a cup of hot tea and you will drink your way to a great glow. Ginger is not only a digestive aid but improves blood flow in its circulatory system as well. Your skin will look plump and “alive”.

3.

Ghee is a type of clarified butter that is well used in traditional Ayurvedic health care regimen. Ghee helps the body with absorption of nutrients as well as heals the gut area. It gives the skin a boost of strength, nourishment and protection, and the effects can be seen shortly after start of intake and routine (this can be done by mouth or by applying to skin directly).

4.

Get yourself a little bit of organic grapeseed oil and start applying to your BELLE NEW YORK MAGAzINE skin for some awesome and surprising

Do’s and What? BELLE NEW YORK MAGAzINE

Spring cleaning can be one of the most dreadful times of the year. After all, don’t you already clean up all year? So…. what is so special about cleaning when SPRING comes around? Because everybody is doing it. You wouldn’t believe the anticipation of this season can add unnecessary stress to your life. So you don’t want to stress about it! The next time anxiety pops up, just tell yourself to get over it. So back to why SPRING cleaning is so darn important? Is it safe to say…because it is! It’s important because it is time to get rid of all the things you’ve been accumulating throughout the year. And besides it’s a fresh start so you can feel better about yourself and the place you call home. So, how should you get started? Here are a list of the do’s and the don’ts. Do and Don’t Do get started. Seems simple enough right? Wrong! Where do you get started? This is the number one reason people put off spring cleaning because they don’t know where to start. Start in the smallest room that has the least amount of clutter? Why is this important? One, you are starting a big task, but starting small. If you go for the larger projects you are going to feel overwhelmed and unsuccessful when you don’t see things moving out the door. Next thing you know you’re taking a break and so does your stuff, for another year. Do and Don’t Pace yourself. You are not running a race to see who can clean up the fastest. If you are, you are wasting unnecessary energy. You might be burning more calories which is always a good thing, but NO… slow down and give yourself enough planned time to get through the mess. Put some music on and enjoy the process. After all, it took you an entire year to collect all this stuff. Do and Don’t Get help! Get the kiddos involved and make a game out of it. Have them color coordinate items so they don’t get bored. They won’t know they are helping out (sneaky, I know). But seriously, get help, it’s not just your mess, unless you live alone, then… um... Get the neighbors involved or pay a teen who I’m sure would appreciate the extra cash. Whatever tip you decide to use, let the world know by #BNYMagClean and let us know what worked for you. Happy SPRING! BELLE NEW YORK MAGAzINE
