irst I want to say congratulations for an amazing year to the BELLE New York Magazine Team who has helped shape this magazine to what it is today. This issue welcomes a brand new year. A year of celebration of one year since our launch in March 2015 - which is really an amazing accomplishment. I feel so blessed knowing how far this journey has taken us and I know I could not have done it without those who surround me and the support of an amazing husband. Anyone who knows about being an entrepreneur, knows it is a true financial strain until you can see a profit from all your hard work. My husband told me to follow my dream and not to worry about anything else. To be able to have that type of support from him and my family, means so much. Also, I don’t think there is one person my sister Amy comes across and doesn’t mention the magazine. I feel truly blessed to have that kind of support. When I first though about creating a magazine, I didn’t want it to be just another magazine. I really wanted it to be special. I wanted it to be a voice of not only the community, but a voice from all across the world. There are so many talented people in the world, I just wanted to afford them an opportunity to be a part of our process, where they would have otherwise not have been included. Many of you who have come to know me know that, the reason I decided to launch this magazine was, I was already running five different magazines for a non-profit organization. Being the first time in the driver’s seat was kind of intimidating but I decided I was going to take on this task full force, and so I did. Being placed in this position by default (someone quit) I gave it a new look and a new vibe that the subscribers really appreciated. I also felt like I was not getting the respect I deserved from leadership. It’s one of those things where you are hoping that one day someone would believe in your talent enough to give you the job but they never did. Although I was running the department by default, my title kept me seen from management as “the little person” so I had to move on. I decided to quit and create my own path, BELLE New York Magazine was born and I haven't looked back since. BELLE New York Magazine would not be who we are without all of the people who voluntarily gave up their time and talent to see this vision come to pass. When I approached people about working with me, I was not kidding when I said I couldn’t afford to pay you what you are worth, but I can give you a platform to showcase your talents to our subscribers, which at the time were about 10 people (you have to start somewhere). My first shoot that helped start it all - (Afua Sam Designer of Studio D’Maxsi, Makeup Artist AikiaArtistry, Hair stylist Charlene Brown, Photographer Eric Sharpe, Models Cyrene Renee, Cat Adar, Adrianne Nicole (daughter), DeNise Evans, Erica Campbell, Charlene Day (cover model). I cannot skip this question, which I get asked, a lot, why BELLE New York when you are located in Maryland? Before I decided to launch this magazine, I wrote my first novel, which has become a trilogy, “Chasing BELLE - She was looking for LOVE. He was looking for REVENGE.” BELLE is the nickname of the main character Samantha, who’s mother, when she first saw her, (as we all do) thought she was the most beautiful baby she had ever seen. Because this magazine focuses on Fashion, BEAUTY and Life.Style, I thought it was the best fit for what I was trying to accomplish. NEW YORK on the other hand for me, is the true meaning of “the city of dreams”. When I first took a trip to New York, I remembered being mesmerized by how the people were every where and on a mission to get somewhere. The energy of the city was high and I felt like I was going to jump out of my skin because I couldn’t contain my excitement. So I always say, Maryland is my home, but New York is my heart. Combined together, you have a magazine filled with fashion, beauty and lifestyle. So as we close out one chapter and begin another, I would like to thank everyone who has been so loyal to us and we hope to continue to bring to you the inspiration behind our artistic images and features. First let us start off by introducing who you are. Well, my name is Daphne Jones-Robinson. I am an only child on my fathers side but I am the third child in my family from my mother. Growing up was tough. We moved a lot because when my mom remarried to an amazing dad who took on three kids. We spent a lot of time traveling (Airforce brat is what they call us). Making friends was hard, losing them was even harder, moving to the next state. Too bad Facebook wasn't around. So it was really tough. For me friends were everything knowing one day I would have to let go and move on. I think I still have that life mentality. Because things always seemed temporary, I lived life in the moment. People ask me all the time, did I know what I wanted to be growing up? My response would always be no. All I knew was, I didn't want to travel. I felt like I had seen the world enough, or it had seen me. No longer the case. I love to travel. When did you discover you had a creative flare? You know, it wasn’t until high school, I took anything serious. In middle school I skipped class, but high school was something different. I became more focused. School was really important and I loved getting good grades. My creative flare, started in a monitory art class. So, I remember being in art class and we had to work on this project either with a group or solo. I chose solo. Mrs. Foster walked up to me and said challenge yourself. I repeated “challenge myself?” I knew I was no picasso, and the closest I ever came to being creative was coloring. I surprised myself and it came out amazing! Ha, a creative person was born. Did you go on to later do something with your new found creative talent? Umm… I did. I was encouraged to attend a loyal art walk in Annapolis, but I never did that. However, I did get a few requests for personalized paintings which was a lot of fun. I think one of the things that fascinate me about art, with anything, life, whatever, you start off with a clean slate. Everything is blank and you build up on it until you’ve created your own masterpiece. What was your strangest job? Wow, I applied to this temporary agency (which I loved) and they called me at home and asked if I knew how to wrap presents. Of course I said yes “I can do all things through Christ that gives me strength” right? So I get there and there are all these boxes to be wrapped and I kicked off my heels, rolled up my sleeves and got to work. I always feel like this, if you want to work, you are going to work. Is there a favorite quote to that philosophy? “If somebody offers you an amazing opportunity but you are not sure you can do it, say yes, then learn how to do it later!” - Richard Branson. So basically what he is saying is, fake it till you make it. Case by case though. Know your limits. Don’t make yourself look foolish. So you started off your creative genius talent in high school and you carried it throughout your life. How did you go from wrapping gift boxes to running your own magazine? I’m not sure I would call myself a genius, ever. There is so much you have to constantly learn to stay on top of your game, especially in this ever revolving industry. You cannot stay young forever but you have to always know what’s happening and what’s now. Umm…how I got into the fashion industry…I was a teenager and my mom put me and my sister into this beauty training youth center kind of class and we had to do a fashion show. Well… let me just say, it didn't go so well for me. We had to memorize where and how to walk on this runway stage in the form of a T. I got up there and my mind just went blank. So instead of me walking the T, I did a cute L and posed. Exit left.

The funny thing is, I got complimented on how beautiful I looked and how well I did (talk about a boost of confidence). I went on to model for various companies in the District and had a great time. As far as running my own magazine, I was working in a non-profit (corporate structured) space and I was basically thrown into writing, editing and assisting with the creative side. I know I didn't mention this, but when I was little, I found a love for writing so this wasn’t anything I wasn’t able to do when asked. This non-profit, had five magazines and I had a hand with helping all of them. Once the Director (my boss) was let go, I had to step up to the plate (more like I didn't have a choice) and run the department. I tell this story all the time when asked, but one day I went to my bosses boss, and told him I quit. Just like that, I already had my purse in my hand my boxes were already in the car and I was gone! I knew if I could run the department writing about things I didn’t love (accounting) I could run a magazine writing about what I did love. Plus the environment was so toxic and depressing, I knew I couldn't stay there another day. So, I decided to take a chance on me. There is a lot of competition in this industry. How do you handle the B.S. and by that I mean, “Being Stressed”? Ha, I thought I was going to have to whip out my bible for a minute, just kidding. The stress… You know the stress comes with the territory. Do I like stress? Heck no! You have to deal with it though. I am a movie buff so I watch tons of movies and I like to watch them alone. I am a writer, and have been working on a my first trilogy that was due to be released last October, oops… But that’s the flexibility you have when you are an indie writer. Life gets busy and things do not go out on time and it’s truly okay. Sorry guys, it will be out, God willing this October. I did put out a trailer on YouTube just so people don’t forget about it. But dealing with stress, I pray a lot. I listen to TD Jakes and motivational videos from Les Brown and Eric, phenomenal motivators that help get you going when you just feel like throwing in the towel, like forget this. Friends (pick your prayer warriors) also motivate me to stay on top of my game. The B.S. as you call it, because we really don't want to give that word any power by saying it out loud, can take a toll on you. You just have to know how to handle it. Meaning handle it the best way you can. I think for me, I waited so long for this journey to begin, the B.S. is really worth it, and working through it.

If there is one thing you could ask of anybody to help with your business, what would it be? Ha just one thing? SUPPORT. I think a lot of people don’t understand how hard it is to run a business or what it really means to be a true entrepreneur. People see the glitz and the glamour but they don’t know how many sleepless nights I’ve had and crying over this business. People come in and see the behind the scenes work and that’s when they get it, or a glimpse of it anyway. There is another quote that I like but have never said it out loud or have written it on social media because it’s my truth. “When everybody is proud of you but in your mind you are not doing enough.” This is my reality check. Entrepreneurs need support all around. We are trying to be in the big leagues with companies that have loyal customers. Look at Apple (guilty) I have an iPad, iPhone, iMac and so does my family. At the same time, my money goes back into the community to help with small business owners, charity fashion shows, or charity events period. So if you are buying, spreading the world about a business, that is loyalty. I’m not preaching but the bottom line is help out your brother and sister. This is another reason why I started this magazine. I wanted to be able to give people a voice to be heard in the community. A voice where they might not have had an opportunity to be heard. Makeup artist, stylists, photographers, you name it, we have opened our doors to the industry to give them a chance to grow. Please don’t stop supporting. BOOK A ROOM AT THE TOP.

CAUSE and EFFECT Dark Circles and Puffy Eyes…What causes them?! Any condition that causes the eyes to itch can contribute to darker circles due to rubbing or scratching the skin around them. Hay fever sufferers in particular will notice under-eye "smudges" during the height of the allergy season. Some food allergies can also cause the area under the eyes to appear darker.

Rubbing your eyes can promote the development of periorbital circles, which appear as dark rings around — and more commonly under — the eyes. The darkened color is a result of small amounts of blood leaking out of the periorbital vessels. Periorbital circles can also be caused by illness, allergies, long-term tobacco use, alcohol, and increased salt consumption. Dark circles around the eyes are usually harmless, but in rare cases, they can be an indication of hypothyroidism or liver disease. Rubbing your eyes causes more harm than good. The temporary feeling of relief is vastly overshadowed by its negative side effects. Here are just a few of the ways rubbing your eyes can damage your vision: RUBBING YOUR EYES CAN CAUSE DARK CIRCLES The blood vessels around your eyes are very small and fragile and can easily be broken by rough contact. Rubbing is one of the least effective and most dangerous solutions to removing a small object from your eye, since moving particles along the surface of your eye can seriously damage or scratch your cornea. In most cases, eye drops or tears will help to remove objects from your eyes much better than rubbing will. Many studies have shown that chronic eye rubbing can also lead to severe corneal thinning and complications such as keratoconus, a condition in which the shape of the cornea becomes irregular (and often conical in shape). DIRTY HANDS CAN CAUSE EYE INFECTIONS You use your hands for pretty much everything, so it’s no surprise that they pick up all sorts of bacteria throughout the day. Even in a relatively clean office environment, touching your eyes after operating a computer carries the risk of inoculating your eyes with a host of bacteria. These bacteria can cause pink eye, or increase your risk of catching a cold or influenza. To add insult to injury — or maybe just to add more injury — rubbing your eyes to relieve allergy-induced itching will release more acids and histamines into the sensitive tissues of the eye, which only causes itching or burning to become more severe. • CUCUMBERS Slice, chill in fridge for 30 minutes, place under eyes for 15 minutes. Rinse. Repeat 2x a day for a week to see results.

• CHAMOMILE Soak cotton balls in tea (hot? NOT!), place under eyes as a mask.

Apply a thin layer of honey to lighten the skin under the eyes. Leave the honey mask under the eyes for 20mins or overnight.

• ICE ICE BABY Gently press an ice cube against your eyes for about 10 minutes or a frozen spoon (test on the back of your hand for nonfreezer burn results) for 15 minutes.

LIGHTEN THE WATERLINE Filling in this area with a dark liner can look sultry paired with smoky, diffused eye shadow, but it can also make your eyes look about half their size. HIGHLIGHT There's a reason that even in #nofilter selfies, models seem incapable of taking a bad picture (and it's not just their unfairly superhuman genes): They know how to find the light or at least fake it. A pearly eye shadow or highlighter dabbed on the centers of the lids, underneath the brow bones, and on the inner corners makes eyes look lifted and awake. Look for warm, rosy cream colors if your skin has pink undertones. Golden shades complement yellow and olive skin. And in a pinch, Sobel says, blending an extra dot of concealer on the inner corners and applying some heavy cream above the arches of the brows can also make a huge difference.

GET YOUR BROWS IN SHAPE Groomed arched eyebrows create a flattering frame for the eyes. And anything that accentuates the eyes is going to make them appear larger. Tweeze away stray hairs—Sobel recommends cleaning up the areas above and below brows—and then fill in any gaps with an eyebrow pencil, such as Surratt Expressioniste Brow Pencil or Clé de Peau Beauté Eyebrow Pencil. Then brush brows up (this is key) and over for a defined shape.

• Tell us a little bit about yourself and your background and your ambitions growing up. I am a native Washingtonian.I grew up in the Trinidad area in NE, Washington DC. My ambitions growing up was to be a Veterinarian because I am an avid animal lover but God had another plan for me because my allergies did not allow me to pursue that dream. Instead, I have been in Corporate America for over 25 years as an Executive Assistant to President's and CEO's. I am grateful for that experience because it has assisted me in building my character and integrity as the President and CEO of my own brand. • Bthartistry is the name of your artistry, how did you decide on that particular name for your brand? First and foremost, I am a Christian. If you want to be successful, you have to put God first. That being said, when I began my journey as a make up artist, I wanted a name that would incorporate my belief. The one thing that I would always ask prior to any face that I touch, is "God, Bless These Hands and I pray that my work is acceptable to You, that you use me to minister to someone in beauty, using the gift you gave to me and that I use it wisely and remain humble, at all times. That is how I got the name BTH Artistry (Bless These Hands Artistry)! • As an independent makeup artist, you are your brand and so it’s very important to make sure you stand out and make your work your own. How would you describe your signature look and what is it about your style that sets BELLE New York Magazine

you apart from other makeup artist? I believe my signature look to be Clean Glam. I love Red Carpet looks so that is what I gravitate to the most, however, I am qualified to produce any look requested. One of the biggest request I receive is to be made up but still look themselves and the one thing that still clicks in the back of my head from training is LESS IS MORE. • Recently you merged being a makeup artist and a photographer. Tell us why you decided to give photography a try with your models? I have had the opportunity to be around some of the best photographers in the Washington DC area and blessed that a few invested their time in sharing their craft with me, unconditionally. Thank you Beverli Alford, Norman Jones, Mike Wizowski and Steve Bennett, forever grateful! I am extremely passionate about my work and I thought it to be advantageous on my part to incorporate make up and photography because no one can see or capture my vision the way that I do. The first models I called upon were Makeda Haniyyah and Deja Thai and they came through, no questions asked, and we made magic! • You regularly work with some of the most beautiful women in the world. How does that shape your definition of beauty? It doesn’t, I believe everyone is beautiful, no matter the size, age or ethnicity.   • What’s your top tip for the girl at home trying to look fresh and ready to go in 10 minutes? Tinted moisturizer with SPF, blush/bronzer, mascara and a popping lip gloss is the best way to go and be ready in 10. • When preparing the face for makeup, what are the steps that should be taken to ensure your makeup looks flawless? Cleanse, tone and hydrate, hydrate, hydrate your skin. Make up will be easier to apply to give you the flawless look you are wanting to achieve. • What kind of damage to the skin can be done from sleeping in makeup? The best way I can explain is to have you close your eyes and envision this…in the morning you begin to prepare yourself for work, you have put on your Sunday’s best clothes and have made up your face to perfection and you are ready to walk out the door and BOOM all of the tinted moisturizer and/or foundation you applied has become a magnet capturing all free radicals from pollution, the dirt flying around in the wind and anything else that is being carried in the air, it is now embedded on your make up. You get home from work and you decide that you are too tired to wash your face or my make up looks too good, I’m going to wear it another day. Well, while you sleep, all of the pollution and dirt is marinating in your skin causing wrinkles and premature aging over time…get the picture?  • Any aspirations for your own makeup line? None at the moment, still perfecting my craft as a make up artist and photographer. But, one never knows what the future may hold. I think the world was stunned when she was recently named as an ambassador for French fashion house Chanel after being seen front row at the Paris Fashion Week show. FASHION MIDORI AMAE ANTM FAN FAVORITE Tell us a little bit about yourself and what led you down this path? When I was younger, I wanted to be everything. Literally! A lawyer, a vet, a talk show host, everything possible. Haha. I moved around a lot when I was growing up, so having lived in 6 states, I had seen so many cultures, occupations and community experiences that I just knew I could do or be anything. I was discovered in a mall when I was in middle school and that started a short stint in mall fashion shows and I didn't get serious about modeling again until I was 18 and able to travel on my own. After traveling and learning more about the industry and how I can make it work for me, I was hooked! What was your big break in this industry? I think my big break came from a photo shoot I did with Steve Bennett and Keena Queen. The photos from that shoot were completely unlike any of the other photos I had taken at the time and pushed me to work with more experienced photographers and actually make sure there was a direction, forethought and planning for my future shoots. From there, I was able to create a sound portfolio and the picture caught a lot of attention. Their circles loved it, my circles loved it and I'm still getting noticed from that one shoot years ago. What does it actually mean to be a fan favorite for Americaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Next Top Model? How did you obtain the title? DCW50 used to host a Fan Favorite competition at the America's Next Top Model open casting call, before the producers choose the cast. I entered into the contest thinking that I might get a few votes, but I'm not sure the effect it would have. Being a fan favorite, in any aspect, means that you're doing something rightand your peers, surrounding community members, fellow influencers and appreciators see and acknowledge it. I'm still so grateful to all of the friends, family and followers I had voting for me from the DMV (DC, Maryland and Virginia) to California and the UK! What would you identify as your three most successful habits? 1. Keeping a journal (or multiple journals in my case): It might sound a little funny but i write everything down and I make to-do lists multiple times a day. It's efficient, effective and looks stylist! haha 2. Syncing calendars/apps/notes across all platforms: I've always got to be connected and being successful continues with organization. Between my iPhone, Google Apps and my computer, I have everything just one swipe away almost at all times. I never know when I'm going to meet that amazing photographer, model or entrepreneur so I prepare for it. 3. Meditation: plain and simple. Take time to clear your mind, reflect, recharge and reset. You are inspired by the style of Jackie Kennedy, Alexander McQueen an Oliver Rousteing, what is it about their particular style that makes you love them? Jackie (we're on a first name basis) is an all-time classic. There was something about the ease of feminism, poise and grace in her and her wardrobe that I love and envy. I wish I had more petticoats! Alexander McQueen was always a personal inspiration of how my artistic creativity didn't have to be stifled by anyone's norms. McQueen let me know that it is dope to be yourself, as spiked, gothic, rosey or checkered as you want to be. Rousteing holds my vision of my wardrobe. He just gets how I want to dress and continues to slay my closet. Haha You are a brand ambassador for several brands, tell us how you came about being the face of these particular brands? DiDomenico came about because the designer and I have known each other for quite some time. I feel in love with Kelsy's work back in 2010 and down the line we felt that our brands could grow with one another. Not all of them are that easy though! As an independent model, we'll be the first to tell you, the hustle is real. There have been countless nights where I'm up until 3 or 4 AM drafting and sending emails, fixing my website or researching/practicing for a role or casting. I had to take chances and cast my net wide and strategically. As a model coach, what is the best advice you can give to someone breaking into the industry? Be realistic about expectations: yours and those of the industry. You don't go into a casting call without a head shot/comp card or book and expect people to know you. You also can't expect to get casted because you have a cute face if you can't walk, talk and/or take a good photo! Modeling is ever-evolving and you've got to do your research before you dip your toe in. How important is it to have some type of mentorship in this industry? It was vital to my career to have a few people around me who saw my flaws, strengths and potential and were able to lend me a hand instead of turning the other way. I wouldn't have made it without some amazing photographers who told taught me about magazines and publications, industry vets who taught me about the modeling world and models who corrected a walk or told me "lift your chin up". I thank each and every one of them. What does success mean to you? When I wake up and get to do what makes me happy, serve my community, challenge myself and beat my previous goals, then I am successful.

Haute Looks Clothing, Owner Geraldine, started oﬀ in the fashion at the age of 16, when she worked her first clothing retail job. From then on, she continued to work and participate in diﬀerent areas of fashion, including fashion shows, modeling, various retail jobs, and personal client styling.

How did you begin your career in the fashion industry? After working as a Regional Manager and Stylist for a small, well known fashion company in the DMV area, I branched oﬀ to launch my own company, Haute Looks Clothing in the summer of 2015.

What makes your boutique diﬀerent from your competition? I strive for myself and my team of trained stylists, to engage in the best customer service at all times, including in- store personal styling, while creating a warm, family atmosphere to shop.

Is this your first boutique? My first boutique oﬃcially opened in November 2015, located in District Heights, Maryland.

What other type of clothing do you carry in your boutique? We carry carries a variety of unique clothing and pieces, along with purses, necklaces, shoes, make up products, and many other diﬀerent essential accessories.

What's hot for this spring? For my Spring Collection, I mix soft, yet bold pastel colors and prints. The cute, yet sexy 70's boho- flared look is coming back and it's "Haute-r" than ever! My new collection includes: high slit maxi dresses, edgy boho pieces, two piece matching sets, high waisted jeans, glam & shimmer jersey dresses, asymmetrical shirts & dresses, crop tops, and much more! What does success mean to you? When I wake up and get to do what makes me happy, serve my community, challenge myself and beat my previous goals, then I am successful. What is one characteristic that you believe every motivational coach should possess? Empathy: the ability to share and understand the feelings of others. When speaking with my models or students, my mindset is: I've been where you are right now. It's my job to get you to where I am and beyond. I feel what you're going through and we're here to help you grow without too many growing pains. What was your experience like being a Fan Favorite for ANTM and do you have any advice for those trying out for cycle 22? Every experience is what you make it. Before I won, I was feeling low about my rate of success (which happens often for fresh faces) and didn't feel like sending out a lot of interest letters or applications. After I won, I felt so 'on top' that I sent out letters and emails to major designers and shows for fashion week and was so surprised at the reaction. That season, I doubled my shows from the previous year. With that said, go forward without fear! Be yourself and if someone doesn't like it, just know that there are others out there who do. Have the courage of McQueen with the grace of a Kennedy and rock your wardrobe like it's by Rousteing. What and who motivates you to do what you do, and where does your passion come from? My younger sister motivates me along with my core passion of service and happiness. When I send her BTS pics or show her what I've done and she says that it's cool or that she loved it, it really means a lot to me. I want to show her a balance in life and that you can really live your dreams. I strive to be the big sister that I wish I had.I've always looked to reach out and help my community with the skills that I have. So with each photo shoot, I think 'what did I learn from this experience that I can share with future models' and 'I hope Kaila likes these pictures!' What is your core philosophy? UT PROSIM, that I may serve. Why have you decided to add modeling coach to your title? It started with my nature of wanting to help people. Producers, designers and directors would ask me to model the walk or to help someone with their walk and i really enjoyed that. Eventually, my alma mater asked me to come back and teach their walking classes for the fashion show I used to walk in. That was where I was able to test out my walking class curriculum. Since then, I've worked with 40+ models in a Model Coach or Creative Director position and I enjoy each and every experience I've had so far! The modeling industry is getting pretty crowed because there are more opportunities to be seen. What is your advice for those models who want to be able to stand out and make it to the top of this industry? Being someone else or comparing yourself to others is overrated. Be true to yourself, your style, your moral, your image, your brand. That is what makes you stand out. It's ok to say NO. It's the best! For an everyday healthy lifestyle tip: become one with your inner yogi! Where is your favorite place to travel? Does Krispy Kreme count if I jog there? Haha, I live for a quiet place to read, relax, meditate or practice yoga. That could be on the beaches of Puertos Morelos or a rooftop overlooking Times Square. What are you looking forward to in the upcoming year? I I am looking forward to learning from Cynthia Bailey as we team up at an upcoming fashion show, working on the photo shoots and articles for my magazine. I am also excited to create more modeling opportunities for the girls that I work with as well as the upcoming modeling workshop schedule that will be posted on my website soon!

GUCCI vs Sonique Saturday. This is not an episode of “chick stole my look” but you cannot deny the similarities in these two designs. Saturday is a celebrity stylist, who created the now famous bag “You Fake Like This Burkin” under her BellaDonna collection. Her bags are a reflection to get the attention of the idea of having to carry designer purses. Gucci models on the other hand, rocked Fashion Week with a similar branding as Saturday which has caught some not so nice twitter and instagram wars. We won’t be the judge but let us know what you think.

Many things in life happen for a reason. Those things may not always be pleasant, but most times we find ourselves faced with difficult situations that we may not believe we have the strength to get through. We can let our problems and tragedies define who we are, or we can take them by the horns and allow our greatness to shine. While talking with Brittney Pappano; business consultant, mentor, and model…basically entrepreneur in the making, I realized yet again, that there is always someone out there whose struggles seem a little more damaging than the next person. Many factors come into play and can possibly have a negative effect on any child as they get older. In Brittney’s case, having to move every year and continually adjust; she became confused, insecure, super shy and selfconscious. This impacted her self-esteem and made it difficult to make and keep friends. Raised by a single working mom, she became self-sufficient and took care of herself most of the time. Her mother shifted around and moved frequently whenever things got tough, so she was often the new girl at school. With her parents busy lifestyle, and the much needed parental guidance, she ended up with so much confusion and instability in her life, led her to fall into a depression in high school. As Brittney got older, her mother’s issues multiplied and soon Brittney found out she was addicted to drugs. One constant in her life was being driven by something greater than her and her circumstances. Something that kept her moving forward, kept her going, kept her trying. “I’ve always known there had to be something other than depression, anxiety and pain. It’s my inner knowing, my truth.” Although she was afraid, she enrolled herself into college and went to school for free with the help of grants. She had no idea how to get through something as big as college without much guidance, but she realized that there was a blessing in every opportunity…even when it seemed as though the situation at hand. During her junior year of college, her mother committed suicide. That fueled her desire to heal herself even more and gave her the power to recognize her own greatness. She never excelled at anything in particular during school, so it was her sheer determination to create a life that was something more than what she had. During her journey, Brittney has done a lot of healing, therapy, soul searching, living and creating life on her terms versus what she “should” have done. All of that takes a lot of courage, and courage is essential for the world in which we live. Speaking with Brittney, I was amazed at how resilient she was. The saying “you don’t look like what you’ve been through” rings true in her case. This fresh faced woman with an amazing smile looks nothing like what she’s been through. She has found success as a business consultant (which she has been doing for over nine years), modeling on the side and a passion for writing.

BRITTNEY PAPPANO How one womanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s struggle turned into a blessing of strength, hope and resilience.

LIFE.STYLE BRITTNEY PAPPANO What made you get into modeling considering your shyness growing up? I started modeling late; at the age of 24. I’ve always had an interest, even as a teen. My mom did a little bit of modeling also and was in the Mrs. Colorado Beauty Pageant. I started doing some promotional modeling in my twenties and it paid well and was flexible. I pretty much taught myself. I put a portfolio together, learned the business, made my own comp cards, learned how to pose from different websites and styled myself for shoots.

I’m just getting into fashion. I have a personal stylist and she's taught me a lot so I'm kind of playing around with it. I've learned that I have dimmed myself down in my style, actually in many aspects of life and not just in fashion. I think a lot of people dim themselves down so that we don't make others feel uncomfortable. My stylist always tells me stop dimming myself down and that I look amazing! But, there are no specific designers that are my favorite, I'm just having fun exploring what feels good on me.

What are your future goals? There is a direction that I'm headed but I’m letting things unfold. I'm just trying to take it one step at a time. One thing I’ve learned is not to try to create a plan in my head of exactly what will happen, and just let things unfold one step at a time. In the past I've tried to have it all figured out and it kept me from moving forward. I try to keep my focus on my long term vision, and let it unfold. One immediate goal I have is to see Beyoncé in her latest tour. That's a tangible goal! (Laughing) Writing is becoming a passion of yours, where do you see yourself going with it? As far as writing, I'm just getting into it. I feel like I have a gift for written communication, and I’m learning how to hone in on writing from my heart as opposed to what I think would get the most reaction or sounds the best., but writing from my heart. I think people’s stories are important and written word is a powerful way to share them. Communication is an art, it takes the indescribable, things that we can only sense and feel and put into our language. Do you have any favorite Designers?

You have experienced some tragedy from the past. How has it changed you as a person? They have been vehicles for growth and opportunity. When I am in the midst of stuff happening I tend to forget that somewhere in there is an opportunity. It can be very challenging to see them, but at the end of the day we have to be able to see situations for what they are. Tragedy, pain and heartbreak force you to do things differently, they force you to unzip and take off a layer of yourself. They are very powerful and I think we have to choose to go through them fully. As a child, moving was always painful and confusing. I’ve experienced sexual abuse, dealt with OCD, anxiety, and

they’ve definitely shaped me. I've gone through so much only to come out on the other side. It's helped me evolve into the woman I am.. If my environment and circumstances could have had their way with me, I wouldn’t be where I am today, getting to share my story with you. But, instead, I’m a first generation college graduate, business owner, and published writer. I've played the victim many times in my life, because it's what I’ve know. But it’s only one perspective of a situation. The other perspective is that the things I’ve been through have been opportunities to heal, to do things in a way that’s true to me, to create something different, and to know compassion for myself and for people. Do you see marriage and children in your future? In my mid-twenties, I remember telling my dad, I wanted to be married and have four children. I think when we are younger, we create this life we think we should have in our heads. Right now I’m not sure marriage is for me. I do desire a profound partnership. As for children, I’m still super focused on working on myself and I don't think I could be the kind of mother I would want to be. I think one of the most important things someone can do is to be a parent. But in order to do that, I want to be in the best place possible for them. The things I went through a child; I refuse to put a child through that. I think it would be irresponsible to bring a child into the world if I’m not in a certain place to do so. Tell us a little bit about yourself and your background. Who is Caprice Smith? Caprice Smith, is a retired Special Investigations Detective who currently teaches at a private University, in Maryland and is also known as the Uncuffed Living Expert. I am a wife and mother of four boys who are very energetic and fills most of my days running from soccer practice or Boys Scouts; even after spending my days speaking throughout the country. Outside of being a great mother and praised mompreneur, I have really dedicated my life to empowering women and families, mainly educating them about healthy relationships and using their inner power. Most recently I was the keynote speaker at the American Business Women Association in Annapolis Maryland and trainer at the National Speaker’s Bureau in Baltimore. I am the founder of a non-profit 501 C3 called SharperMinds, and hosts the Annual Symposium on Dating and Domestic Violence. It has been growing for the past nine years, drawing in crowds of over a hundred families. I am an award winning business coach for other women entrepreneurs and have been named a Top 100 Minority Business In The MidAtlantic Region, Baltimore Best by The Examiner and received the Black Wall Street Award. What were your ambitions for writing this particular book? I wrote Uncuffed~Behind My Smile and then a series of Keys To Living Uncuffed Collaborations because, women need to know three things, 1. Their stories need to be told to empower others. Sharing our story is like sharing our soul, the little piece of GOD that lives with others. Others should experience your highs, lows and in betweens. 2. I had accomplished a lot and by dialoguing with others, realized that many had similar experiences but were being bound by them. 3. My story is a gripping one of triumph over many obstacles with a humorous twist. If it wasn’t a novel, it would be a sitcom.

When and why did you begin writing? I always journaled as a young person and “writing the vision” has always worked for me. I write to clean the slate and make my steps clear. I like to stay focused on the goal, which is serving my God ordained purpose and training women. When did you consider yourself a writer? When I released Uncuffed~Behind My Smile and folks, men and women openly told me how much my story has impacted their lives. I was about two years bof retirement, I released my story and it changed lives. Tell us a little bit about the cover and how did you decided on this particular title. I can’t remember when I discovered the title, Uncuffed~Behind My Smile. I can tell you that Behind My Smile part represents when I would paint on a pretty smile, covering the broken person inside. Until I completed the self-Work and transformed into the woman I am today. What are your plans for marketing this book? I have traveled the country “Uncuffing” women in their lives and business. I have worked with public relations and marketing teams, but what is most effective for me is to live words that I share. By living uncuffed and understanding the strength that lies within my story stems from the GOD in me. I truly believe that feminine power is unleashed when we confront anything holding us back from our true great destinies. The humbling part is the confrontation process. Humility is the art of collaborating with other strong empowered women who are willing to release limiting beliefs, low expectations, frustration and unclear boundaries.

Why did you choose this route? The world is designed to cater to over achievers who love to express themselves. It was the perfect storm of opportunity, readiness to live in the now and an understanding that I would not rest until my stories and stories of ambition like mine were told. I needed to “uncuff.” I love to sing and would have chosen that route but my vocal ability does not extend beyond Soprano on the praise and worship team in church. Give us an insight on how you selected the individual women who would contribute to this project. I magnetize women with that Oprah winning mentality; they are drawn to me. They say opposites attract which is true on the dating scene, but in business, when you reflect that which you desire, it shows up in a big way. I am one strong empowered lady ready for just about anything. I’m ready for all things, from little league to date night, the board room to the classroom, Sunday School to major speaking engagements. I believe that staying ready is ok, but for me it is better to walk poised, alert and in motion headed for greatness. When it shows up, I partner with it. There is little room to hesitate or choose the wrong people to collaborate with. I choose my collaborators by the way they stand, the happiness in their eyes and the “get it done” attitude glowing from their pores.

What books have most influenced your life most? Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill, The Bible and Simon Sinek's Start With Why. They each suggest why service of your perfect client will benefit you in the long run.

If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor? It is pretty interesting that I prefer to write more than read, I most enjoy reading Judge Hatchett and Cindy Trimm, both spiritually grounded women who will not take any mess. Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing? It is most difficult for me to stop writing and categorize the message, because I have so much experience and insight from varying perspectives. Who is your favorite author and what is it that really strikes you about their work? I love the book, Start With Why, it encourages readers to really think about their actions, who they are trying to help, who they want to share their story with. It comes down to who will be touched by your story, because it's those people who you were purposed to help. Those people whose connections are preordained, they are designed for you, before you were even born. People don't realize that your “why” is your connection to the world. It is your connection to the universe, everything has a purpose.If you're drawn to a certain type of personality or style, even if you are attracted to a certain type of person, it's because you two forces compliment each other. Every coach needs clients who will compliment them; every partner needs one another who will share their dreams and take steps along with them; every relationship needs two powerful forces. LIFE.STYLE CAPRICE SMITH I learned that might clients are very bold and unique, just like me. The people I'm supposed to help, understand my rhythm. This book highlights the difference between Apple users and PC users, and it's quite simply, different preferences. Varying personalities, different cultures and different priorities. Maybe one group is more visual than the other. Maybe one group prefers a different style of computer, something fancier. I've learned in my journey that is true, you can't love everything; everyone may love you, but the people who you truly connect with you on a heart level are the ones you are purposed to help. If you could have been the original author for any book, what would it be and why? Shades of Grey, not my full disclosure is that I have never read it, but to see so many touched by it indicates it must be good. I know it's sect and sex sells, but on a larger scheme, it is the fantasy like characteristics that intrigues me. I plan to read it soon, before I see the movie. I would have loved to have been the one to put romance back on the market, because I am a dreamer at heart.

What is your favorite motivational quote? I have two, “If you are not living uncuffed, you are just not living,” it reminds me to release any and everything holding me back from success and happiness. I also, live by Philippians 1:6 and know this to be true, “He who began a good work in you, will be faithful to complete it.“ Where do you see yourself in five years? I have many mentors, we are working on big bold steps. Big steps, I am choosing to return to school for my Doctorate Degree, learning new information excites me. Also my non-profit of eight years has gained a whole new set of team members who are on fire to build healthy relationships. This means I can focus on new ideas that have been on my heart for some time. As far as speaking and coaching women in business, I have already booked another huge platform to uncuffed women outside of Baltimore. Although I do not want to spill the beans, I can tell you. The Midwest may not be the same in just a few months. My goal is dot on a couch beside Oprah and share our favorite moments when we gave someone else permission to live their dreams. Do you have any advice for other writers? Yes, write from a place that reveals the one thing you ate trying so hard to hide. Be transparent, folks see through your mess anyway. It's ok, they have mess to. No one is expecting perfection, they just want you.The real you and not a carbon copy. It's like when someone compliments your purse and instead of telling them you bought it on sale at Target, you tell them that you can't remember where you found it. Be a blessing by being honest, it's enough good energy for everyone. Holding your issues, your wins, your struggles close, just means you can't live your best life. Let it go and make room for more awesome things to happen for you. Is there anything else you would like to add that we have not covered? I need the readers to know living “uncuffed” means that they release anything holding them back, even their own self imposed issues and critiques that are keeping them involuntarily detained. Freedom comes at a cost, it cost boundaries, honesty and growth. My book released me, gave me a platform to share and exposed me to a point that I had to grow up. Where can our readers discover more about you and your work? Readers can follow me on social media where I constantly leave nuggets of inspiration and continue to share aspects of my uncuffed living. Any book tours in the works? Yes, I plan to continue my book tour in New York and Pennsylvania. It launched in 2015 in Baltimore at Ukazoo Books. I have been fortunate to sell many of books throughout the country when I speak and will continue this at an upcoming event in Florida. Where do you see publishing going in the future? I truly believe Indie publishing is the way to go. Larger companies have maintain an edge in the distribution arena, but many speakers are discovering the fastest path to success, which is solidifying the message and selling their stories.

LIFE.STYLE JoANNA RHAMBO Tell us a little bit about yourself and your background and your ambitions growing up. Well I was born and raised in South Central Los Angeles by my mother who is an educator. I’m the youngest of 5 children. Where we grew up, it was not uncommon to encounter gang bangers and prostitutes on a daily basis. Although those were our surroundings, my mother was not going to allow any of her children to be consumed by the streets so she raised us in church. We were probably in church 4 days a week! At the time I hated it, but I certainly appreciate it now because not only did it teach us about discipline, but there is where I learned that you can live around hell but hell doesn’t have to live inside of you. Peace comes from within. Being the baby of the family my older siblings would be out doing their thing and I would spend a lot of time alone. This is when my creativity and imagination began to flourish. I would watch movies, memorize the scenes then act them out. I knew from the age of 6 that I wanted to be an actress. Hazel Honey Films, launched in 2011, what was it like making a decision to create you own path in this industry? It was and continues to be the most beautiful yet scariest thing I’ve done to date. When I began in this industry, all I wanted to do was act and for a while that’s all I did. However what I discovered was, my phone won’t always be ringing off the hook with these amazing roles. This is an industry of entrepreneurs and I just want my piece of the pie. As an independent film maker, you are also an actress, writer and producer, how challenging is that? Extremely! Ha! You have to do EVERYTHING yourself and each job requires 200% effort to make a quality project. Of course you assemble a team, but as the writer/producer, you oversee the project to fruition. Of course everything is easier with a budget. When did you consider throwing away what others see as the normal 9-5 grind and decide to just pursue what you love to do? My last 9-5 was in 2004, however I still work a job within the industry. It’s important to me to stay connected as to not lose touch. Things change rapidly and it’s important to be able to flow with the changes. We think on film, it’s very important to catch and hold the attention of your audience, how are you able to do this through your films? My films are based on real experiences that I think people can relate to. I don’t make abstract films. I make ‘slice of life’ films. Simply put, real people in real situations. When you see a film that you connect to, whether it tells your deep dark secrets or makes you laugh because you’ve been there, that’s captivating. One of the most basic human needs is the need to relate to one another and that’s what I try to do. Your film Solstice, written and produced by Honey Hazel Films was accepted and made its debut at the 21st annual Pan African Film Festival in Los Angeles February 2013. How did you feel seeing all your hard work on screen? What emotions were you going through? Ah-ma-zing! I felt EVERYTHING! Terrified,

gratified, joy, sadness, elation, everything! Moreover, a sense of accomplishment. There’s no greater feeling than writing a project, shooting it, then hearing the reactions of the audience as they take it in for the first time. There were so many obstacles that had to be overcome with the making of SOLSTICE and no matter how hard it was or how many times I wanted to give up, the end result made it all worth it! SOLSTICE was a film of healing for many people and I’m still so proud of it. Everyone from the cast to the crew were AMAZING and this team effort proved to be a success. I still get butterflies thinking about how incredible the entire experience was from start to finish. Not only did it screen in Los Angeles, but it also screened in Atlanta, Philadelphia, Indiana and Tennessee! We mentioned, not only are you a writer, but you are also an actress, tell us how you crossed over or did you first start out as an actress? I’m still an actress. That’s my main focus, but again there are many ways to achieve the same result. Writing and producing help create more work not only for myself, but for other talented actors who may not otherwise be seen. For me, writing allows me to play genres and what I mean by that is, I have the opportunity to show my range as both a dramatic and comedic actress. As a female, do you feel like you have to work harder to be taken serious about your craft? Sometimes, yes. I can’t say all the time as an actress that I feel that way, but mostly as a producer I would say absolutely. There have been times when I’m talking business and I have gotten talked over or even ignored on my own project. It’s bizarre, but you learn to command respect. Is there anything you find particularly challenging in this industry? Yes. Consistency. Who is your favorite actress and what is it that really strikes you about their work? There are so many... Of course Meryl Streep...Kate Winslet, Kimberly Elise, Loretta Devine, Cate Blanchet... There are SO many more, but what I love most about these actresses is, although they are all attractive ladies, they ignore their pretty and just DO THE WORK! They commit wholeheartedly to the roles and are mesmerizing to watch! If you could have been the writer for any movie, what would it be and why? Hands down I’d have to say ‘REVOLUTIONARY ROAD’! That is literally one of my FAVORITE films of all times! It was brilliant, poignant and thought provoking. The way the story was told was incredible. Both characters were right and both characters were wrong and that’s what made it beautiful. Do you follow your heart or your mind? Brilliant! Where do you see films going in the future? I can’t say what the future of films will be, but my greatest hope for future black films is to show the full spectrum of our culture. We were not placed on this Earth as slaves and should not be limited to civil rights films and period pieces. Although they do have a place of importance, we have a RICH history and heritage that should be represented on film. We are not just funny. We live, we love, we inspire, we work, create and so much more. I’d like to see more of our love stories on film and not have male bashing nor female bashing relationship stories; rather just stories with tough decisions to make. That’s my hope and I will do my part to make it happen.
