“…a good magazine is hard to find and when you find it never let it go. This one’s the next best read to the BIBLE. Love it…” B.D. ASHBY
Editor’s letter
BELLE New York Magazine There’s the song that goes “Friends…how many of us have them…” I can go on and on about friends and how much they mean to me, but when I tell you about these two, Debra Chandler, CEO and Co-Founder of Kickfannie.com and Gigi McMillan, Celebrity Stylist, CEO of Kamisol Style Consultancy, are one of a kind. When you see us coming, you know there is either going to be trouble or serious business. I am honored when I stand beside these two because I know we will always have each other’s back, side, and front. This past month, I have had the pleasure of getting to know these ladies a little bit more as we travelled from Washington, DC, to New York. Whether it was for New York Fashion Week, hanging out with Kerry Washington and Tommy Hilfiger, private meetings with designer extraordinaire, Dara Lamb (who is extremely humble) to pulling together a charity fashion show, we did it as a team. Thank you to everyone who has constantly been an extension of who we are. You allow us to be us without apologies. After all, we don’t hold the title of DIVA’s, we are just business women. My advice to you – surround yourself with women who are not your competition, but who are your motivator’s and your support system. In any business you will need it! Stay sweet! Blessings Follow: @bellenewyorkmag Bellenewyork.com

KEEP IT OR TOSS IT? Have your beauty products gone bad? How will you know? You know how that door handle or office water cooler that everyone touches has germs on it, right? Well same goes for your makeup. Every time you touch your makeup or skin-care products, you are transferring germs to them. Then what happens? They are then put on your face. What do you need to know? Heat along with humidity, promotes growth of mold and yeast. We won’t get gross, but although the bathroom is a convenient storage area, it should not be the ideal space to store cosmetics. Why? High levels of airborne bacteria can contaminate beauty products too (we won’t go into that, but hint: always put the lid down before you flush). A safer place is a cool and dry linen closet.
Here’s a quick guide on when to ditch the makeup. Face Makeup Foundation: Toss-it: Six months for liquids; two years for powders When you repeatedly dip your brushes and fingers into liquid foundation, you increase your chances of bacterial growth, therefore, increasing your chances of breakouts or skin irritation. As your foundation ages, oils rise to the top creating a streaky, inconsistent finish. Powders are a little different so you can hold on to them a little longer. One thing to remember, there is less of a problem because bacteria can't grow where there's no water. However, be sure to check over the ingredients. Powders with any type of botanical ingredients i.e. aloe or jojoba can become harder to blend and will most likely crumble because any trace of water will evaporate. 13
