Questions to ask your venue by Casey Ek
W
ith the average cost of weddings nearing $26,000 in 2017, couples getting married in today’s day and age often need to capitalize on as many opportunities as possible to save. Often wedding venues account for a substantial portion of wedding costs and planning efforts. Here’s a non-exhaustive list of crucial questions to ask your prospective venue’s manager that might save you some money and potential headaches.
Booking the venue It can often seem like there are a lot of hidden costs when booking a venue, between deposits and cancellation fees, the price of a venue can add up quickly, but beyond the cost, it’s important to understand precisely what venue you’re walking into. Questions to ask include: • How many people can the venue hold? • How much does it cost, and is there a minimum down payment? Can a payment plan be arranged?
• Can we use the space for the rehearsal dinner/ day after brunch? Can we save money by doing so? • Can we save by booking in the off-season? • Does the venue have liability insurance? What would it cost to get our own if not? • Are there contingency plans for inclement weather? • How much electricity can the facility supply and will it be enough for the various vendors, such as entertainment, heat lamps and lighting?
Feeding the guests No wedding is complete without a meal, but there’s a lot to consider when making decisions about food. Venues have litany policies when it comes to food, so it’s important to have a complete understanding of what to expect when planning the wedding feast. • Do we need to use an in-house caterer, or do we need to provide our own? Can we use an outside caterer? With that in mind, is there a food/drink minimum? Page 6
• Do we need to rent tables and chairs? How about place settings? • Is there a corkage fee or additional charges for bar staff? • Is there a cake-cutting fee? Can we bring in a friend or family member to cut the cake? • Some people have been known to bring in food trucks to their weddings to save money/ offer more options. Is this option available?
WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 2019
Decorations • Can we bring our own decorations and set up ourselves, or do we need to use rented, inhouse decorations and services? • Are there restrictions on decorations (sparklers and confetti)?
Miscellaneous Here’s a list of potential questions involving odds and ends surrounding planning and guests’ comfort: • Is the venue accessible to ride share services like Lyft or Uber? • Will the venue have a sound system available for speeches? • Are overnight accommodations available to guests? • What is the parking situation? • Will there be space for the wedding party to prepare?

When it comes to dessert, wedding cake alternatives are on the rise Some other wedding desserts Hy-Vee have prepared include donut hole croquembouche, parfait shooters, mini tartlets, and chocolate covered strawberries designed to look like PAGE TWELVE BELLE PLAINE HERALD, BELLE tuxedos and dresses.
by Rachel Wittrock There are many wedding traditions that have persisted over the years - the white bridal dress, toasting the happy couple, the exchange of vows - but one tradition that has ebbed in recent years is the traditional tiered wedding cake. According to Bryce Ekeren, executive pastry chef at Hy-Vee in Eagan, only 10 percent of couples are opting to go with a traditional tiered cake. If a couple does have a wedding cake, they usually have a smaller cake along with other smaller dessert options. One option gaining popularity is donuts. Last year, 20 percent of weddings featured donut bars, according to Ekeren. When Drea Thurmes of Waconia gets married later this fall, she will be serving donuts and cupcakes via Desserts by Faye in Lake Crystal. There will be apple pie cupcakes, pumpkin with maple frosting, pumpkin with caramel frosting, cake donuts with maple frosting,

Get the most out of bridal shows and wedding events
R
ecently engaged couples may be excited to get a jump on wedding planning. Bridal shows can be a great way for couples to meet and familiarize themselves with local wedding professionals, all the while introducing themselves to the terminology of wedding planning. Though they’re a great source of information, contacts and samples, bridal shows also can be a bit overwhelming. Learning how to maximize time spent at shows can help couples plan their weddings as efficiently as possible.
Start small. If the idea of large crowds is unappealing, attend the more intimate, boutique shows that are often held at local reception halls and restaurants instead of the larger installations at convention centers and hotels. Scout out vendors. Check the bridal show’s website for lists of exhibitors and see if your desired vendors are on the list. But even if they’re not, keep an open mind and use the show as a chance to compare offerings. If an event map is available, marking off must-visit booths can help save time. Pre-register. Pre-registering for bridal events saves time at check-in, and doing so may make you eligible for discounted tickets. Come prepared. Chances are each vendor is going to ask couples for information so they can follow up with a phone call or email with more detailed offerings and estimates. Couples attending the show can expedite the process by coming equipped with labels that feature their names, contact information and wedding date. They can then stick the labels on sign-in sheets or use them like business cards. Dress comfortably. Bridal expos involve a lot of walking and roaming around. Wear comfortable clothing and shoes. Consider a backpack or handsfree bag so you are not weighed down when collecting the swag and other handouts throughout the day.

Ask questions. When face-to-face with vendors, rely on their expertise but don’t hesitate to ask questions concerning themes, colors, recommendations for honeymoon locations, invitation paper suggestions, and much more. Stay for the fashion show. Many shows will offer a runway experience to present the latest gown and tuxedo offerings. This can be an entertaining way for couples to formulate their wedding styles.

Friends and Family Officiants may be the key to a flexible wedding by Casey Ek
F
or many, marriage is a production steeped in parochial tradition, complete with a pastor or other church officiant presiding over couples’ weddings, but for 43 percent of couples in 2016 whose marriages were presided over by friends or family members, the modern era stands as a signal for changing trends. In the state of Minnesota, it’s easier than one might expect to gain the credentials to become one of these friend-officiators. One need only take a cursory glance at the MN E-licensing website, the online presence of the State of Minnesota’s licensing department, to discover the lack of red tape for someone to become a marriage officiator. The requirements state: Marriage officiant credential filing “For a person (both Minnesota residents and non-residents) to be authorized to perform marriage ceremonies in Minnesota, the person must be at least 21 years old and must file their “officiant credentials” with a Minnesota county. Once this is done, marriages may be performed anywhere in the State of Minnesota.” Yes, that’s really it. Though the process may vary from county to county in Minnesota, the process remains the same: get the nod from your county, and you get the nod from the state. This is not to say that all ordination forms from online ordinations with entities like Universal Life Church, a popular portal through which those seeking to get online minister credentials by downloading and file forms online, will be recognized by law. Your best bet is to make sure internet-ordained
Page 12
friends’ credentials check out with the county in which you reside, because states may not recognize marriages officiated by online ministers. But the ULC has been around since 1959 and has ordained more than 20 million ministers for free. With rates of couples who had a family member or a friend officiate their wedding in 2016 at 43 percent being dramatically up from 2009’s 29 percent, the trend seems to be on the upward swing. Also with nearly a quarter of American adults saying they are religiously unaffiliated—and more among millennials— according to a 2015 Pew Research survey, the trend allows for flexibility when planning the big day.
Where with a traditional pastor-led service, a couple may need to wait months or even years for slots to open up, those who have friends or family preside over weddings can do so virtually without any of the time restrictions going the traditional route has. Furthermore, going the non-traditional route ensures couples that complete strangers won’t join them at the altar. Add this to the fact that friend officiated weddings lend themselves to being flexible with themed weddings and the like, it becomes clear why the trend is growing.

any couples now take a more creative approach to their wedding invitations, using them to evoke a certain theme or to establish if the wedding will be formal or casual.
While wedding invitation designs have become more flexible over the years, they should still include certain information to avoid being overwhelmed with questions from guests attending the festivities. Date and time: It may seem simple, but don’t forget to include the date and time of both the wedding and reception in the invitation. If there will be a considerable amount of time between the ceremony and the reception, you may want to include a handful of local dining suggestions so guests can grab a quick bite to eat before the cocktail hour. Ceremony information: Guests will need to know where couples are tying the knot, so be sure to include the address of the ceremony site, parking information as well as a link to its website. Reception hall information: Couples whose receptions will be in a different location than their ceremonies should include the same information about the reception hall that they did about the ceremony site. Reception hall information is often listed on reception cards, which can include information on the front and back to save paper and money on postage.
Information to include with wedding invitations
Hotel information: Many couples arrange special room rates with nearby hotels for their wedding guests. Include the names of these hotels, directions to the hotel from all directions, and directions from the hotel to the ceremony and reception sites. Reply cards: Reply cards are included so guests can easily reply to let couples know if they will or will not be attending. Couples with wedding websites can even include a link to their sites on the reply cards, letting guests know they can reply via the website if they so choose. Reception menu: Many reception halls ask that couples give them a ballpark figure as to how many of their guests will prefer each type of entrée available at the reception. Include menu options within your invitation package, ideally on your reply card, so you can easily provide this information to the caterer. Wedding website information: If you did not already, include a link to your wedding website on your save-the-date cards include that information within your invitation package. Wedding websites will answer many of your guests’ questions for you, so don’t forget to make this valuable tool a part of your wedding planning.

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 2019 Color can be a critical component when establishing the ambiance for a wedding. Color can evoke certain moods and set the tone for the day. Some colors work better together than others, so while choosing a color scheme may seem like an easy undertaking, some couples may find it requires more careful consideration than they first imagined. According to the bridal guide A Practical Wedding, wedding colors can give couples a starting-off point for all of the other details of their weddings. This ensures the wedding ultimately has a cohesive look. Colors need not necessarily match, but borrowing on similar hues can make it easier to plan wedding party wardrobes, flowers, table linens, and much more. Colors can come from anywhere, but many couples try to coordinate their color schemes with the season in which the wedding takes place or a theme they have incorporated. In fact, couples who are finding it difficult to decide on a palette can look to seasonal colors for inspiration. For example, pastels and blooming flowers can set the scene for spring weddings, while jewel tones and rich reds and greens may be fitting for winter ceremonies.
Some couples opt for more loosely defined color palettes, such as neutral and natural colors. Country and garden weddings can borrow ideas from the landscape, with natural linens paired with wildflowers. Using whites, grays and beiges enables couples to add a pop of color without overwhelming the setting. It’s best to choose a maximum of three colors with one metallic to ensure that things look cohesive without being over-the-top. Don’t feel pressured to select the “hot” colors of the moment. As with clothing and hairstyles, trends change. It is better to select colors that will stand the test of time and look good for years to come. It’s also good idea to check out the colors at the wedding venue to see how your pallet can fit into that style. Fortunately, many reception sites are outfitted in neutral tones to enable customization. Don’t be afraid to take some chances with the color palette, especially if you want to make a bold and modern statement.

How to create a wedding day schedule
W
edding days can be hectic. In fact, many couples note after tying the knot that their wedding days were so busy that the ceremonies and receptions were over before they knew it. Creating a wedding day schedule can seem like a daunting task. Couples tend to have lots of things to do before saying “I do,” and organizing everything so ceremonies begin on time can seem as puzzling as a brain teaser. But certain scheduling strategies can help couples ensure they look their best and make it to the altar on time.
Start with the ceremony. Couples can establish a framework for their wedding day schedule by working back from the ceremony. Once the ceremony time is set, couples who plan to take photos before their ceremonies can then work with their photographers to determine how much time they will need for photos and where they want to take the photos. Bridal parties may need transportation to the photo session, so determining when and where to take photos before the ceremony gives couples an idea of when to arrange for pickup. Confirm when the wedding venue is open to the wedding party. Before booking hair and makeup appointments, couples should confirm when they will be able to access their wedding venue. Brides may want to get their hair and makeup done at the ceremony sight, but that may only be possible if the venue opens early for the wedding party. If it does not, then brides must account for transportation time to the ceremony sight when making their wedding day schedules.

Determine how much time is needed for hair and makeup. Weddings that feature large bridal parties will require more time for hair and makeup than ceremonies with small bridal parties. Grooms and groomsmen often take care of their own hair, though some grooms might want to schedule hot shaves for themselves and their groomsmen. Grooms should ask groomsmen if they want a hot shave and then work with their barbers to determine how much time it will take to tend to all participants. Brides with large bridal parties may need to book more than two hair and makeup artists so everyone can get done on time. Wedding hair and makeup sessions can last several hours for large bridal parties, so brides should schedule their sessions early if their parties are big. Make lunch arrangements. Some couples choose to tie the knot and host their receptions at the same venue. In such instances, if brides are getting their hair and makeup done at the venue, ask the venue representative if lunch can be provided to the bridal party. Some venues may include small lunch buffets in their reception costs, while others might charge extra. Confirm the availability and costs, and if it’s unavailable or too expensive, then arrange for lunch to be delivered. Either way, couples should not skip lunch, as it may be their only chance to eat until after the ceremony. Distribute your schedule to one another and the bridal party. Once the wedding day schedule has been devised, couples should share it with each other and their wedding parties. Grooms’ wedding day to-do lists might not be as extensive as brides’, but grooms should still be kept in the loop regarding the schedule so they can help if anyone has questions or if something goes awry. Sharing the schedule with the wedding party decreases the chances of someone being late or missing an appointment. Couples can solve the riddle of scheduling their wedding days by working backwards and asking their vendors to cooperate in laying out the day’s events.

Wedding dress fitting guide
New Spouse? New House?
Say “I DO” to Homeownership! Nick Schmidt REALTOR®
B
ecause fashion preferences were once ornate and dependent on precise fits, ready-to-wear clothing really did not become widely available until the early 20th century. Such attire is now available in just about any retail store. Because ready-to-wear clothing is so readily available, the average person may be unfamiliar with custom-made or tailored items. In fact, a couple’s wedding may be the only instance in their lives when they require the services of a seamstress or tailor. Fittings are a part of wedding planning, and here’s how brides-to-be can navigate the process of finding and being fitted for a dress. Try on sample gowns. The first step is to make your rounds to various gown shops and try on the samples they have available. Most sample sizes will not be the size you wear every day, so expect them to be ill-fitting. Do not be discouraged. Once a gown is chosen, the dress shop will take your measurements and order the gown according to the manufacturer’s sizing guide. Again, this can be shocking, since the size will likely be larger than what you wear in street clothes. Some shops will also order a little larger to allow for adequate tailoring. Schedule the first fitting. The first fitting should be anywhere from eight to 12 weeks before the wedding date, according to experts at WeddingWire, an online wedding
612-290-6344 106 E. Main St, Belle Plaine NickSchmidt.EdinaRealty.com information provider. This is the time it takes to complete most standard alterations. Complex customizations can take even longer. Brides should also budget a minimum of $500 for alterations, which may or may not be included in the price of the dress. Bring shoes and undergarments. Remember to bring along the exact shoes and undergarments you will wear with your gown. A change in shoes or bra/corset can result in the alterations fitting poorly the next time. Bring these items along to all subsequent fittings. Speak up. Martha Stewart Weddings suggests speaking up at fittings if anything is uncomfortable or needs tweaking. Seamstresses are masters at their crafts, but only if they understand the desires of the bride. Check the details. The second fitting is designed to check that all issues from the first fitting have been addressed, the gown is comfortable and you can move freely. At the last fitting, ask the maid of honor to come along so that she understands how to bustle or help you handle complicated straps or closures. Open communication with a seamstress and bridal shop can ensure brides-to-be get a dress that fits like a glove.

Put a new twist on the wedding guest book
by Rachel Wittrock
M
onths or even years of planning can go into planning the (hopefully) perfect wedding. In all of the hustle and bustle of the day, the bride and groom may not get to spend a lot of time with their guests.
The couple incorporated a matching guest book - a canvas print of snow-covered pine trees with lights on top, along with their names and wedding date.
Many couples choose to provide a guest book for their guests to pen a sweet message of love to look back on. Today’s brides are really making the guest book their own as they want something they can incorporate into their home instead of collect dust on a shelf.
When Kimberly Hillestad of New Brighton tied the knot with husband David, they had a custom Minnesota Wild jersey with the name Hillestad and the number 18 (the year they got married) on the back for guests to sign. After the wedding, they had the jersey framed and have it hanging in their home.
When Megan Eckberg of Gaylord gets married on Feb. 23, she will be providing a wooden bench for her guests to sign.
“My husband and I are big Minnesota Wild fans, and he actually took me to my first Wild game as one of our first dates, so it was fun, different and meaningful,” Kimberly said.
“I wanted to do something different from a traditional guest book because I wanted something with more meaning and something that I’d look at more often,” Eckberg said. en cle make her a wood rd is having her un ylo on Feb. Eckberg found inspiration on Pinterest, and asked her uncle, who is a woodworker, to craft a similar design for her wedding. “I plan to have it sit either at the end of our bed or in our front entryway with a couple decorative pillows on it,” Eckberg said.
When Gina and Chris Griepp were getting married, they wanted to have a guest book that was not going to collect dust. Initially, they were planning to get large letters of their initials for people to sign, but then Chris came up with the idea to have a giant clock. “He pointed out that no matter where we live, we will always have a large wall that will need a clock,” Gina said.

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 2019 something functional and not just a book that would be stored away and have to page through. We wanted something that could also be incorporated into our home as we began our lives together,” Stadler said.
Gina and Chris Griepp went with a clock guest book. Chris built this clock in their garage, and they plan on hanging their wedding photos around the clock. (Submitted photo)
Chris built a large wooden circular clock in the couple’s garage, and it now hangs on a wall in their home. The couple is planning on hanging some of their wedding photos around the clock in the near future.
The happy couple now lives in Eagle River, Alaska, and Stadler said it is cool to look at their Wisconsin and Minnesota clock every morning and remember their home roots. When Amanda and MacKinsey Nygaard tied the knot this past Oct. 27, they had a large piece of polished wood for their guests to
sign. Amanda said their wooden guest book is currently on a ledge in their entryway, and they are planning to mount it onto a wall in their living room. Maria Raines of Brooklyn Park wanted a Harry Potter theme for her wedding, with tables named after different places in the wizarding world and different centerpieces. She turned to Etsy for inspiration and found a unique guest book idea that fit her theme. She had a print made that featured the Whomping Willow with her husband’s
and her Patronuses (a polar bear and a white owl), and their names and wedding date written in the Harry Potter font. Raines had her guests use purple and orange ink to mark their fingerprints on the Whomping Willow, and sign their name next to the fingerprint. “We had just bought a house so we didn’t have a lot of decor, but now we have this guest book hanging that we see everyday and it reminds us of our wedding and the people we shared it with,” Raines said.
Callie Jo Stadler grew up in Coon Rapids and fell in love with a man who hailed from the land of Packers and cheese. When she and her husband were getting married, they also opted to have a clock as a guest book. Callie Jo Stadler and her husband paid homage
Instead of the traditional circular clock face, to their roots with a wooden clock.
