DESIGN BUILD FOR THONGLOR COMMUNITY

more details

http://designbuildthonglor.blogspot.com WITH AJ. NILAY MISTRY & KERRIE BUTTS

1

Thonglor Community Hut The design was initially design by INDA team, then compromise with the community. Ofcause, the design wasn’t end up as what we desire, but everybody happy and everybody gets what they want. That is how we reach the finished line.

2

This community lack of public space, they have no title deeds nor a proper house to live. We have INDA and other sponsors for this Design build project.

Houses research in slums A group of 3, we are assign to do the house search part. We strolled in a very small soi which is the back yard of these community and found local adaptation such as wash room, Cloths drying area, an extension to the house, or the arrangement within the house itself. The houses are mostly a temporary and cheap materials. The soi is no larger than 1 m. that no more area for a new occupy to take place.

3

Thonglor Community Hut Construction process took 26 days 2 weeks of planning and talking to community 1 week of Site documentation. We do as most part as we could, and left some skill works to the construction workers. Some rainy days caused the delay but overall was still in plan. Sometimes, the kids come play with us and the villagers provide us food and drinks. Every team’s member get to experience the overall construction and dealing with people in the community.

5

Reconncet the Disconnceted The Sheridan Expressway The construction of new expressway was a boom to United State in the past era. Without reallizing - it ruins the city, the village divided in half and habitant lost connections between the east and the west. The city turns to automobile driven and afterward, it turns into ruins because the urban planning develop through time. We was given the word “demolished to redesign this place. We reconnect the disconnected by build some new structure and turn it into multi functioning recreational area for this village. A riverside park, a playground, and a gallery will connect them together once again.

6

DESIGN EXPERIMENTAL WORKSHOP “BOUNDARY” IN BERLIN

WITH AJ. YARINDA BUNNAGE & WILL PPATERA

7

Mapping in Kreuzberg The boundary project started with the understanding of Berlin city. We use daily commute; metro, walk, and ride a bike and was looking at the journey documenting as route mapping and texts from another project called “rePLACE BERLIN. In a week, we(2) design and produce a new way of mapping the city through game. This is a game of story teller, the players need to read the story that will direct them to different spot within specific routes.

8

Liminal Positions Total of 24 Students was given two site; the Berlin Wall memorial & Park am Nordbhanhof. Our group(of 3) defined the word ‘Boundary’ as an invisible wall that heavily change the people behaviour. We finalize the idea to focus on the surface on the ground.

Park am Nordbhanhof is a large park where tree and grass was left untouch, people walk only on concrete path and provided route in the side forest. We interupt the main route by using the grass paddy cut in square and place them spread in grids. The patterns of grass paddy was a replica of existing stone path across the grass field.

9

Sunday at Park “There’s an Extremely Thai culture everywhere Thais go.” This statement often speak by us - the Berlin trip students. This third project deal with the habit of Thai people takes over the public area such as this PreußenPark, known in Berlin as Thai park. Every sunday each summer, local food is prepared, umbrellas are up, and service such as massage are all on offer at the park. Located in a city that already operates under a split separation of users, cultures and activities coexist ,

and on occasion, these variety of aspects collide. Sunbathing, dining, cooking, resting, gambling, massaging take places meters away from people playing sports or music. Unlike many other Berlin public spaces that we have been explored so far where citizens from West and East intermix that cultural differences displayed to full effect. We derive the idea of building this structure from this contrast, how rules can be bend by the Very Thai habits, and the fasnination by the West.

THE HUB OF DUBAI A n Intersection of a major transportation in Arab Emirates

Visceral Intricacy | The Underground Shopping Mall

Location Research

Dubai, Arab Emirates Dubai is full of oil and rich people. Desert could not delay the desire of Arabians to become the most advance technology lifestyle in Middle East and to the world. Reflect on the mega building project at every corner of Dubai Street. Atleast a thousand construction cranes locate in the city. Once the lifestyle of Dubai turns toward mall and mega building, public transportations flourish to serves both local and tourists.

A SEMESTER PROJECT IN 2012

23

Dubai people is mostly own a high class car that it is rare to find locals walking along street. It rather is easier to find a parking than one comfort walking street. The city provide two major metro, one goes around the old town connects with another line that goes horizontally across all other bussiness district. The future line will also run horizontally across the Dubai but extend connection to the new airport with an express line and a normal line. I propose an idea of creating a major node of interchange station that will become a hub, an attraction spot, a recreational space, under the vacant desert land of Dubai center.

Fire fighter Museum Site research and Precedent study (timeline + activities mapping )

I selected the site at Bangrak Fire Deparment from almost 50 site our group have been search around Bangkok and nearby. Bangrak was first a house belong to foreigner who came abroad to Phra-na-korn in the 18th. Then transform into the Revenue Department because it is a major port that ship will carry goods to the city. It also uses as a dance ballroom to held a ceremony for Royal and Foriegners. After it left abandon and the city district was moved farther away, this location forcefully use as a dormitory for firefigthers and their family. No garantee to the safety of living, but there’s no other choice for this department because of the lack of Fire station location in the city. However, this Bangrak Department is profound in its beauty of the building appearance and how it isn’t repaint expose the decay texture from the 18th Century.

Thesis Statement of Fire Fighter Museums

Museums are typically understood as a place for collections of artifacts, whether of artwork, antiquity, or invention object where an audience sees a collection but does not get to enter into a direct experience with the artifacts, because they are removed from their use context. Precedent Study on the Relationship between Art and the Gallery/Museum. In relation to that, many artists have challenged the boundary between art the institution, such as Rirkrit Tiravanija. On the work of cooking in the museum, he intended to represent the artifact only is meaningful when at it current use and the trace of it after used. With another work of his where he scatter placing televisions and seats around the museum corner, that the visitor could interact with each other and with the objects. Both of his works imply to the significant of present use context of the artifact that having people engage them directly is an essential which is the the relational aesthetic he refers to in his art pieces. While in contrary, the Duchamp’s fountain was intended to take the artifact from it usual context and represent a new meaning to the gallery, it does caused the interaction between audiences and artifacts, or not? Both works were mentally distract the audiences from general point of view toward museums. In addition, Many artwork of Olafur Elliassion play with the authentic experience of human to the natural occurrences, and most of the time it is specific to the location. For instance of the sun and fog room that the artwork is appreciated only though an active engagement of the visitors. Or the another artwork in Boros Bunker-Berlin, where a ceiling fan hanging in the center of the room , spinning in regular orbit when no one around, but when a person enter the room, the air current is disrupted and the orbit become violently eccentric.

The discussing of display in the museum If we consider the museums as an artifact display gallery, it might be to think of how a white concrete wall could play in order to create a route for displaying them, but the way to exhibiting might not be different from putting them in a glass box or hang on a wall with no one be able to use them. But in many cases, the historical artifacts are carefully chosen to represent a socio-cultural or national narrative thus it is impossible to recreate the use-context of that actual artifact. My intention is to challenge the notion of obsolescence that relates to the use of artifacts in the museum, through designing a museum that exhibits the situation and artifacts in their actual use context. What if a museum operates as an active operation while inviting an active participation, how would this museum be? Therefore, the program for this project is going to be an integration of a museum into an existing fire station in Bang-Rak, where the use-context of an object will be challenged and the boundary between these two programs called into question. SITE HISTORY OF FIRE STATION My site located at soi Chareon Krung 36, at first it was called Sunlaka Sathan means a house to collect import taxes. It is at the bank of Chaophraya river which was a major commercial district with an only passage condition for import ships. Chaophraya river was full of a colonial building that was intended to be an icon of an inter-nation of Siamese. So it is mostly belong to the government or international companies. The building was constructed in 1890. Its initial function was to be a custom house of the government from a commission of king Rama V. It borrows a NeoPalladian style of architecture that was a major influenced in Venice, by an italian architect, Gioachino Grassi. When the shops carrying merchandise from foreign countries entered the city, they has to pass through this custom area. After the districts of Bangkok were rearranged the revenue department also need to relocated. Therefore the old building have not been preserved as a cultural heritage but a usability that is what their only concern.

43

Since today the city fabric radically changed to automobile orient and transportation in general has expanded exponentially since the building was constructed. That the changed have caused the abandoning of these architectures. (1940 Abandoning of Custom House Building) Then it lost its original function and its meaning to the city. However, after it became vacant, a private company tried to turn it into a hotel, and the French embassy tried to take over it. But at the end, around 1959 it turned into Bangrak fire station for the lack of it in the city. The colonial building also have been adapted into a temporary resident for almost 40 fighter’s families from its vacancy, and it’s age of more than a century have brought in many photographers and tourists to visit from outside to inside the 4 storeys building. The question of preservation also been raise in the public mind which shown in public media, blogging, and news. Its appearance brought back the nostalgia while its vacancy brought back the new function. Hence, the age value enhanced the aesthetic of heritage appearance while use value is keeping this building alive but unprotect from its wear out structure and access that need to be repair. Site documentation Comprised of 3 antique buildings with several temporary roof structure and a hastily constructed of one story house for the fire police officers. The first building on the right align perpendicular to the river consist of Gyms, recreation area, and a fireman and family residents which it also form an only entrance to the site. The second building on the left also align perpendicular to the river consist only firefighter family residents. The third building in the middle form an H-shape with the first two buildings which is facing the river to the south where it receive most wind from both geographic area and direction, this building is mainly for residential purpose. In addition, there are temporary roof structure used for parking a variety of vehicles from automobiles to boatsto storage of fuel and oxygen tanks. An area in front of the building is often used as an outdoor eatery, morning to weekly assembly, and mini fire fighter practice.

A variety of people who using the site in one day. from fire man and their family in blue graph, Fire fighter in shift in Red graph, and the tourists in yellow graph. The overall is approximately 137 using the site in one day which has a peak of 75 people at 4:00pm and the least after midnight to sunrise. Fire fighter in Bangrak station has 3 shifts. Each shift 15 people divide into 3 people for main station, 2 for sub station, and the rest go out for city checkup or waiting for rescue mission. The city check up often includes check for truck route and access, check the safety of fire staircase, check the water host and extinguishers. The shift period distribute to 3 shift in 24 hours. First start from 8am4pm, second start from 4pm-midnight, and last shift start at midnight-8am. The fireman daily routines generally start at 8 am for national anthem, organizing the station, maintaining the machines, and a daily checkup of the city within Bang-rak district, after 6pm is only prior to fire alarm from the station. On the weekly scale, they use one or two hour a day to fill up fuels and oxygen in every truck in use. Wednesday morning is for station major assembly involving everyone attendance. And as special Saturday for fire man to go out training sheriff and volunteer villagers On the monthly scale, the station will sometimes have high rise fire escape practice and mini fire fighter practice each lasts one day. And lastly the annual firefighter practice which is a requirement for every firefighter and takes at least 5 days on the countryside field. IN CASE OF FIRE... I had a chance to visit the real situation of fire case. The location is near Sao-ching-cha, in Phranakorn, behind Watsuthat. The site was a three story paper factory building that burned down around 5:00 PM. All habitants who live nearby got out within 5 mins, no injury, just some scratch. The electrician come to cut the electricity out within 15 mins. a volunteer organization is living next street reached within 10 mins. The fire fighter came to the location within 30 mins due to heavy traffic in rush hour, and police came after 60 mins. After the fireman reached the place, they were us-

ing around 60 mins of water spraying to extinguish the fire, and 15 mins to check up the place after that. From this investigating, time has come an important role in the situation but the routes around this residential area make it very hard for fire truck to get through. Which this kind of fire case is happening the most in Bangrak area. Also with heavy traffic that they need to get through most of the time when an emergency happen. And also, this event cause the volunteer and villagers to gather, so someone prepare an amount of food to give away to public after the burn. The situation held from 5pm to around 10pm with crowded. COMPARISON OF SITE TO ANALYZED PRECEDENTS The idea of authenticity could be relevance to the Neues museum a renovation project done by architect David Chipperfield. Where It contains an additional part that is clear cuts with the existing materials, such as new white concrete wall adjacent to the existing brick wall. The Chipperfield’s strategy of preservation that using the new in contrasting to the old, have enhanced the aged historical value through materials while improve the functionality of space. That is also transform the building itself into another part of the whole collection. The Pergamon museum collect large pieces of antiquity that are integrated into the museum space, it has an audience directly engage it by walking through, sitting on, or touching it. Once the arrangement of all the artifact completed, the museum and artifacts together create a route for visitor to experience the tectonic similar to how they could engaged in the original context. The Tate modern is a museum that were transform from a factory to an art museum of London. One of the museum that radically changed from original function but still keep the main industrialization appearance. The only clue from outside is the three strip of glass windows that sometimes reflect the sunlight and sometimes let the interior neon light shine through that transparent apertures.

44

ONCE AGAIN, I CONCLUDE THAT The integration of the museum function to the existing program of the fire station, will allowing the audience to actively engage the artifacts in its present use context. Where the performance of the building as fire station and the objects the fireman uses are this museum’s collection. The exterior appearance of this building will be preserved, as well as some part of the interior wall. In order to preserve the historical story through the reminiscent of a scene from Chaophraya river. And also to contrast with the integration of a museum function that will design to be a contemporary space with present technology since it needs to work in cooperation with the fire station function. Nevertheless, the ruins will become an icon for criticizing the preservation of heritages. Then, the integration of the museum function to the existing program of the fire station will represent an alternative method of displaying the artifacts in the museum. Therefore, What if a functioning fire station and a museum are operating together, how will it overlay, interweave, or intersecting each other? What are the qualities of the interface between the two programs? How the visitor would experience the museum while a fire department are operating. And what would happen when the fire station absents from any mission such as on a calm day.
