LOCALLY GROWN & HOME-MADE — Belleville Farmers' Market
Generations have grown up at the Belleville Market – a market that has been in Downtown Belleville for over two centuries. Constructed in 1872-73, five years before Belleville became a city, the original City Hall building housed an indoor market on the first floor and a public hall and municipal office on the second floor. During this time residents could go inside to purchase fruits, vegetables and pies on display or even ready-to-eat chickens. The hustle and bustle of a farmers’ market morning triggers a sense of community. In the spring, the market comes alive with rich produce, maple syrup, plants and baking, and remains a 'hive of activity' right through the Christmas season. The market is a gathering place, and people are making the choice to support locally grown and made. Located in Market Square behind City Hall, the market is open Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays all year round from 8am to 5pm (peak time 9am to 2pm).
venture off the beaten path? We are also surrounded with beautiful conservation areas to hike, bike or capture that perfect scenic photo. Not the adventurous type? Or just need some R&R? Book a spa day, explore a museum or art gallery, play a round of golf on one of our premiere golf courses, enjoy some gaming at Shorelines Casino, or take in a professional hockey game with the Belleville Senators.
Likea Local TANIA on a SATURDAY MORNING DOWNTOWN — On Saturday mornings I love to head downtown for a coffee before taking my two children to the Farmers’ Market where we load up on fresh produce and hummus. After the children's programming at the Belleville Public Library, we take our books to the Waterfront Trail where we eat our market finds while reading – a perfect way to spend a morning downtown, like a local!

As a result of these efforts, the City of Belleville was awarded with a Bronze Bicycle Friendly Community Award in 2017.

WATERFRONT POP-UPS Entrepreneurs are bringing Belleville’s shoreline to life with the activation of pop-up shops along the waterfront. Visit Victoria Park and Freestone Point for bike and watersport rentals, tour packages, classes, retail, food and more! Allowing entrepreneurs to activate our waterfront has created more activities for youth and visitors to our community – a great first step before significant long-term investment is made on Belleville’s multi-million dollar asset. During the roaring twenties, America was undergoing what is most commonly referred to as prohibition. During a time when alcohol was banned from every house and business in America, Canada came to the rescue by illegally smuggling the sought-after spirits into the country through the Great Lakes. As the Bay of Quinte region sits on the shores of Lake Ontario directly across from Rochester NY, many Canadian men risked their lives during this time for the dangerous life of bootlegging. One such gentleman was Ben Kerr. A cheeky and rebellious boy, Kerr was born in 1884, and grew up to be

s g n i Th l l A y b r o C SPOTLIGHT —
Corbyville is a town built around spirits. Henry Corby moved to Belleville and opened one of the first bakeries achieving great success. After a military service in 1837 and the loss of his wife and two out of three of his children, he sold his bakery and bought a St. Lawrence steam liner. He worked as a grain merchant for four years, traveling from Belleville to Kingston. Corby’s involvement in buying and selling grain led to him purchasing a gristmill in Corbyville. Farmers would grind their grain into meal and reserve a portion to be made into whisky. This

sparked Corby’s interest in the distilling process and he was soon making his own whisky for local consumption. By 1859, the distillery operation was incorporated and quickly began to eclipse the mill operations. When Corby went to pursue a career in politics (Belleville Mayor 1867-68) his son Harry took over the business, moving it into the retail trade and setting up a bottle shop in Belleville. When Corby’s health rapidly declined, he sold the businesses to his son for $10,000. Henry Corby passed away in 1881, but it was Harry’s modernization of the business that helped it attain a prominent position in the distilling industry around the world. In 1918, Corby’s distillery partnered with J.P. Wiser’s.

It wasn't until 1989, after 132 years in business, that the distillery closed its doors and all maturing whisky inventory was transferred to the Hiram Walker facility in Windsor. The plant officially closed in 1991 and 179 workers were out of a job, some of which had multiple family generations working there.
— The Corby Rose Garden was donated to the City of Belleville by the Corby family in 1905. The garden features display beds of 2,000 roses, perennial and annual flowers and a lovely fountain. A stroll through the winding paths, or a rest on one of the benches to enjoy the quiet nature of the park makes the Corby Rose Garden a peaceful place to stop and smell the roses.

The Griffin Opera House was located at 65 Bridge Street East and built in 1884. It was the centre of theatre and opera and was recognized as one of the finest theatres between Montreal and Toronto.
