A MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF JUNIOR SCHOOL
Upcoming Events Science Week Week 6
Assalamu Alaykum Dear parents and carers As the Sydney-wide lockdown continues into week 6 and 7, I thank you again for all for your continued support. Since learning from home began, we have received a great deal of positive messages and emails from parents to their child’s teacher, acknowledging their dedication, care and commitment. Thank you for those kind messages of encouragement. They have lifted teachers’ spirits, as we all find this lengthy lockdown a challenge. Please continue to view and add to our positivity padlet.
Book Week Week 7
Dental & Optical check ups RESCHEDULED to September
ICAS Assessments Postponed to October
I appreciate this lockdown is difficult for all families, in very different ways. We understand that one learning approach does not suit all families and continue to do our best to provide a variety of activities to support the needs of each student. Many thanks to all our parents and carers who completed our remote learning parent survey. I’m pleased to report we received over 138 parent responses! Please read on to learn more from Mrs. Stevenson about our survey results, and some of the changes we will be introducing because of your feedback.

Improvements We’re Making Student engagement and wellbeing continues to be at the heart of Bellfield Junior School, and never has this been more important! ➔ We’re reaching out individually to students who have had difficulty establishing positive learning routines at home. ➔ Learning support groups have begun for identified students. ➔ All class teachers are establishing fun wellbeing sessions in their Weekly Timetables to enable students to engage, talk and connect with each other. ➔ Live 1pm teaching sessions have begun, allowing teachers to explain the afternoon tasks to students to assist them with their independent work. ➔ CANVAS has continued to be rolled out in Stage 3, with all students developing competence in accessing and submitting their tasks via this digital platform. ➔ Teachers have begun setting worksheet tasks for students to complete using EASEL. This allows students to write directly on their worksheet without having to print. Work is sent back to the teacher for marking and feedback. ➔ The amount of screen time throughout the week is carefully monitored. Teachers provide a wide variety of tasks for students to engage in. I am looking forward to a restful weekend, ahead of an exciting Week 7 as we participate in National Science Week on Wednesday. Warm regards, Mrs Natalie Stevenson

MATHS LESSON IN 1M Assalumu alyakum, Dear parents, This week in Maths, Year 1 were learning all about patterns! We looked at all types of patterns – number patterns, object patterns, symbol patterns, odd and even number patterns and different colour patterns. We learnt that patterns can be repeating, or they can be growing. Students used their knowledge of skip counting to create various number sequences! To end our Maths lessons for the week we created a patterned snail together online! We used materials we had at home such as paper plates and paper to make our snails. It was a great lesson to catch up with each other and enjoy each other’s company while we crafted! Check out the awesome work created by Year 1! Kind Regards, Miss Mchawrab Stage 1 Coordinator/Junior School Sports Coordinator

NSW PREMIER'S READING CHALLENGE Dear Parents and carers, What is the NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge? The NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC) is not a competition but a challenge to each student to read, to read more and to read more widely. The PRC is open to all NSW students in Kindergarten to Year 9, in government, independent, Catholic and home schools. The Challenge aims to encourage a love of reading for leisure and pleasure in students, and to enable them to experience quality literature. Students must read a certain number of books to complete the Challenge. Upon successful completion of the Challenge, students will be eligible for a PRC certificate in Term 4. When is the challenge? The 2021 Challenge opened to students on Monday March 1, 2021. The closing date has been extended and will now close on Friday September 3, 2021. How does my child sign up? Students will receive their login shortly from their class teacher. Students will use their login to access their online profile and log the books they read online. What should my child read? Please encourage your children to read the books that have been shortlisted on the website prc@det.nsw.edu.au . Students can borrow books from the College library. Also, a trip to your local library is always a nice way to ensure you have the correct books, as they are easy to find. By encouraging and engaging all our students to partake in this initiative we hope to develop a greater love for reading and to further improve their literacy and vocabulary skills. If you need help using the website and the answer cannot be found on the PRC Support site, please contact us at the College on 9606 2666. Warm Regards Miss Balloot K-6 Literacy and Numeracy Instructional Leader
