A MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF JUNIOR SCHOOL

Upcoming Events Book Week Wednesday 25 August National Child Protection Week Week 9

Assalamu Alaykum Dear Bellfield families I wish to express my condolences as we commemorate Imam Hussain’s (A.S) legacy, remembering his sacrifices as a role model for all of humanity. Today, student learning in junior school virtual classrooms was integrated with the theme of Ashura - Rise with Hussain: Live your Virtue, and required students to reflect on their virtues, in particular their civic duties and social and moral responsibilities. A timely reminder to ensure we are all playing our part in keeping our communities and loved ones safe during this pandemic. Stay at home orders are still enforced, as well as restrictions for visitors to a residence. As members of the Bellfield Community, it is our civic duty and moral responsibility to uphold our college ethos, live our virtues and do what is best for the safety and wellbeing of all others. As parents, it is even more important that we model these virtues for our children. Warmest regards and a restful weekend Miss Harold Head of Junior School

ASHURA IN KINDY AND YEAR 1

Asalamu ‘Alaykum,

Asalamu ‘ala Al Hussain wa ‘ala Awladil Hussain. Peace be upon you O Hussein, upon the Companions of Hussain, upon the Children of Hussain and the upon the Sister of Hussain, Lady Zeinab. Kindergarten and Year 1 students worked tirelessly learning about the month of Muharram, the first month in the Islamic calendar. They studied the virtues and meaning of Ashura, including its linguistical meaning, which stems from the same roots as the word ten in the Arabic language “’Ashara”. On the tenth day of Muharram, the grandson of our holy Prophet Mohammad (PBUHP), the son of Imam Ali (A.S) and Lady Fatima (A.S), was martyred with his family and companions whilst standing against the tyrant Yazid, the son of Mouawiyah. They died thirsty and hungry on the plains of Karbala; the women and the children alongside Imam Zein al Abdeen were taken as captives. In Kindergarten and year 1, we learned to recite the “Salam” tribute to Imam Hussain and his family. Dressed in black, green and red, students stood up proud, respectful with their right hands held up in salutation to our beloved Imam, as they recited the Ziyara (salutation) together.

VOLUME 25 • AUGUST 20 2021 Kindergarten and Year 1 also learned about the tragedy of Karbala and demonstrated their understanding of the event in their creative individual artwork.

Further, students demonstrated a deeper appreciation of the message of Ashura. They were told stories from life of Imam Hussain that teach us compassion while doing what is right and forbidding evil under all circumstances. In short, Ashura is a timeless example that inspires us to patient in the face of hardships and show self-determination when upholding our duties and responsibilities. Labayka ya Hussain!

VOLUME 25 • AUGUST 20 2021 This hand represents the hand of Al Abbas, who went out to get water for the women and the children, but never returned. Students reflected on the meaning and importance of water to humans and animals. Imam Hussain and his family died thirsty and hungry, so we decided to give water and bread to the birds in our gardens. Also, we could remember Imam Hussain and his companions by giving a helping hand to our parents, preparing food with them in the kitchen to feed the family and working together in a spirit. Well done to all students for their fantastic and continuous effort. Thank you to all the parents who are trying their utmost to educate their children during these difficult times. May Allah reward your efforts. Mrs Bahsoun Quran and Illuminations
