Dear Junior School Families, The newsletters I have written have a continuity, you don’t need to read them all, but content links them together. Wellbeing and student engagement are at the heart of what we strive to do here in the Junior School. And one way we can boost both is by practising gratitude. Gratitude means thanks and appreciation. It is a strong feeling for what a person has done to help you or others. Gratitude is a recognition of a value independent of monetary worth. Gratitude helps us feel positive emotions. In positive psychology researchers say that gratitude is associated with greater happiness. 7 benefits of practising gratitude: Gratitude increase physical health Gratitude improves psychological health Gratitude enhance empathy and reduces aggression Grateful people sleep better Gratitude improves self-esteem Gratitude increases mental strength If you still need some help to experience all the benefits of being grateful here are some tips to cultivate gratitude: • • • • • • •
Write a thank you note to someone Say thanks to an unknown person Pray Start a gratitude journal Write down your blessings Meditate. Get to know yourself better. Be observant, start to notice the little things
I encourage you and your children to find 3 things each day to be grateful for: Here are my three: 1. For popping into online lessons to see our smiley and busy learners! 2. For technology which allows us to connect with others during lockdown 3. For Spring! For warm, sunny days and springtime blossoms. Wishing you a lovely weekend, Mrs Natalie Stevenson

ONLINE LEARNING IN YEAR 3 Assalamu Alaykum Dear parents, Year 3 have now settled in and adapted to the challenges and rewards that have come with this term’s online learning adventure. We commend the students of Year 3 on their efforts, perseverance and determination using resources available to them from home to learn and grow. We are proud of you! English Throughout our English lessons, students have been learning to write informative texts and poetry. Through our unit on informative texts, students have learnt lots of interesting facts on a range of topics including sharks, elephants and even Fire Fighters! Year 3 have learnt to organise their information under sub-headings and present their work formally in an information report. More recently, Year 3 have begun to learn about different forms of poetry and have found it interesting to discover that not all poems rhyme! We have explored two types of poems that are unique and follow a specific structure or poetry ‘rules’. This week, we have learnt about Dylan Thomas Portrait poems. These poems begin with a question and are answered using 4 pairs of words. Check out some of our awesome poems below!

PDHPE During PDHPE lessons, Year 3 have been learning about the benefits of physical activity and how we can promote an active lifestyle to others, as well as how we can participate in and enjoy physical activity in our own lives. As part of our learning, students in Year 3 have created posters to provide information and promote the benefits of being physically active. We have explored factors that affect participation in physical activity such as access, cost and personal interests and have had a go at creating our own fitness game or circuit to complete at home.
Visual Arts In Visual Arts this term, students have been learning about the technique of paper mache. This unit was integrated with the Science and Technology topic and students created paper mache artworks to represent either the sun, earth or moon. Paper mache was a new technique and students had to learn how to make glue from materials they have at home. Students mixed flour and water to make glue and even made paint out of flour, salt, water and food colouring! Take a look at some of our paper mache artworks!
