SRC Leadership campaign is underway Dear parents and students, At Bellfield College we understand the school year has been interrupted due to the current Covid-19 Pandemic. However, we are very excited to announce we are currently accepting applications for the 2022 School Representative Council and Leadership Team. The applications are open to all students in years 10 and 11.

Being part of the School Representative Council comes with gaining leadership and responsibility. The elected students will meet regularly with their team and Year Advisor to play an active role in school decision making, making the school a better place to learn in and to provide a fundraising body for the school community. Furthermore, the Bellfield approach empowers student representatives with the skills needed to act as leaders within their school, influencing and contributing to policies and actions, and promoting civic partnership in the community. Regardless of the outcome, all of our Bellfield students are regarded as leaders for themselves and their peers and may be provided with certain opportunities to develop their leadership skills throughout the year.

Students who are interested must submit their applications by Tuesday 3rd of August 2021, 3:00PM to Mrs Sarah Fisher via Email. Due to the current Covid-19 restrictions, we will be sending out communication to students online via Canvas and/or Email. Keep an eye out for more updates to come! Thank you and good luck to all involved. Mrs Zeinab Rammal Year 10 Year Advisor 2021

Creative Arts, Languages and English This term, in English, we have been learning a new Shakespearen play named 'King Lear'. A famous Shakesperean tragedy about deception and family. The students have been learning about the context of the play and the characters. As an online task students were instructed to get creative and draw out a character map of the characters in the play. This is a great tool and resource for students to look back to and track who the characters are and how they are connected Students were then asked to upload it and share it online, on Canvas. Here are some examples of the works students have created of their character maps. Mr Hussain English/Drama Teacher

Sport @ Bellfield College PDHPE Firstly, I just wanted to say that although this has been a challenging time for us all, the PDHPE staff have been extremely proud of our students; their online engagement and attendance has been FANTASTIC- keep up the great job!

Ways to stay active during lockdown Need a ‘brain break’ or just some inspiration to get moving in lockdown? The PDHPE staff have you covered! As we spend more time at home during this lockdown, it is easy to forget our daily activity routine. However, it is extremely important to stay active in particularly during these difficult times. Being physically active regularly is good for both our physical and mental health and wellbeing. Out of the Home: • Walking • Running • Bike or Scooter Riding • Kicking a ball at your local park.

At Home: • weights training — if you don’t have any weights, make your own with filled water bottles, cans or jars • Family challenges • backyard sports • going up and down stairs • on-the-spot running, star jumps, sit ups and push ups • virtual/online fitness classes • Zoom or Skype group lounge exercises with your friend

As the title suggests, this is the reality of learning at Bellfield College and indeed across much of the entire state of New South Wales. However, there is much to be thankful for and student attendance and efforts are nothing short of commendable, so keep up the good work.

Legal Studies Starting with our year 12’s – compression classes have been progressing slowly but steadily. In Legal Studies, our student are now studying the topic of World Order and how apt it is considering the socio-political situation we are in. The current pandemic and lockdown laws are constantly keeping people on the edge of their seats and students alike are witnessing first-hand, the changing and dynamic nature of law. From the role of government bodies in creating regulations almost daily to protect citizens to protests that are advocating for individual rights and freedoms. Students have shown a commendable amount of motivation and engagement in issues surrounding them. Other contemporary issues that students are being exposed to are the various global conflicts and tensions that are ongoing which is an excellent opportunity for them to follow the advice of the Prophet (saw) to be aware and concerned about the affairs of the Muslims around the world. Through this topic students learn about different global events and the responses that governments and international organizations are taking to resolve them.

HSIE Year 8s are discovering life in Medieval Europe and how the lifestyle then has influenced the lifestyles now. From things like house and clothes to food and art, students are getting an idea of how the modern world developed. Moving forward a few hundred years, year 9 is exploring the predecessor of the current technological revolution, by studying the development and impacts of the industrial revolution. In this they look at how manufacturing processes and agriculture shifted from being manual labour reliant to being reliant on machines. And lastly, the year 9/10 commerce law elective class are learning about moving towards independent living and the challenges and responsibilities that come with it, from financial management to time and social management. Students have learnt about the importance of obtaining and keeping basic identity documents and their roles to learning about the rights and responsibilities of tenants when seeking to rent properties including shared accommodation. HSC Study Guide

smh.com.au/hsc-study-guide-2021

The HSC is just the beginning by Sarah Mitchell, Minister for Education and Early Childhood Learning

Being in year 12 is both exciting and daunting all at once. You’re about to finish high school and take the next steps on your journey. You’re also studying hard for your exams and deciding what to do when you leave school. On top of all of that, a pandemic is changing the way students learn and prepare for HSC exams, especially in Greater Sydney. While it can feel challenging, know that you will have the opportunity to get your HSC this year. Your hard work will be rewarded. Just keep studying and don’t lose sight of what’s important. That’s why I urge you to look after yourself. Take study breaks. Eat well. Get enough sleep. Try to exercise regularly. Importantly, look after your mental health. Page | 8

If you feel stressed, talk to someone you trust; a friend, teacher, family member or mental health professional. It might be hard to see past your upcoming exams, but you will soon realise that the HSC is just one chapter in your life. The next might involve learning at university or TAFE, doing an apprenticeship or joining the workforce. No matter which direction you take, finishing your HSC will give you the academic, social and emotional skills to succeed on any path. Your potential and possibilities are endless. Good luck, study hard and look after each other.

Education Minister Sarah Mitchell.

STEM - Bellfield Robotics In the last two weeks there have been exciting developments in the STEM field for Bellfield. We’ve been developing a new program to keep students engaged in coding and robotics in a home learning scenario – equipping them with skills for diverse and rewarding industries.

In Week 1, I began investigating our school’s existing LEGO Education SPIKE Prime kits and their potential as the core for robotics and coding lessons by testing them out. Thankfully I found two brilliant helpers in Azaan and Mauhsen, who happily lent their time to exploring the robot’s potential. First, we developed a robotic dog, ‘Kiki’, that can recognise colours and respond with a variety of sounds to produce an interactive story. First Kiki was lost in the city, and then defending its home from invasion.

Next we moved from a coding focus to an engineering focus by developing racing ‘hoppers’ – two legged robots that propel themselves forward on rotating joints. Azaan and Mauhsen started with basic legs that they then adapted to have multiple limbs for more consistent propulsion, added rubber tipped appendages for greater grip, and offset the rotation of the legs to provide a consistently straight trajectory. The boy’s demonstrated a keen interest that we hope to share with all students at Bellfield soon.

In the meantime, we’ve come up with a great way students can get involved from home: Coding Challenges. Each week we will be constructing robots to conquer a unique challenge such as racing around a circuit, cleaning up an accident scene, or making a robot walk upright on two legs. For students at home, you’ll be writing to code that controls the robots! We anticipate some messy but entertaining trial and error at the start, but over time your coding skills will develop and so too your ability to conquer the challenges.

If you’d like to prepare and get familiar with the coding, download the SPIKE app at: https://education.lego.com/en-us/downloads/spike-prime/software Stay tuned for further updates.

Convince Me! Kids of all ages are excellent at wearing down the resistance of a parent who denies permission for them to go somewhere due to lack of safety or suitability concerns. Unfortunately, many kids use annoying methods such as: • • • • •

repetition (Can I go? Can I go? Can I go?); questioning (Why can’t I go?); guilt (You never let me go anywhere!); nagging (Can I, can I, can I go, pleeease!) and whining (Ahhh! Whyyy Caaan’t I gooo!)

Often we are so tired that we give just to gain some peace, which makes pester power a useful strategy as kids achieve what they want. One way to avoid this obnoxious pestering is to ask them to convince you that they are responsible enough, old (read mature) enough or aware enough to be allowed to go somewhere. Here’s an example: “Amelia, I’m not sure that I should allow you to take the train into the city with friends. I’m worried that it might not be safe. Convince me that you can do so safely.” This response puts the onus back on the child or young person to think to counter your concerns. Listen carefully to their response as it will indicate whether they really have considered your concerns and are aware of the depth or range of potential difficulties. Simplistic responses don’t cut it If they respond with simplistic comments such as; “I’ll be okay”, “we’ll stick together” and “I won’t do anything stupid” then they are probably unaware or unprepared for contingencies that may arise. However, if they provide a response with more depth, they may demonstrate their readiness. An example for this might be “I know you are worried that we might get picked on by older kids on the train. That worries me too. We’ll make sure we pick a carriage with plenty of adults and if kids hop on that look like they’ll give us a hard time, we’ll get off at the next station.” Minimising risk Answers such as the above show they understand your concerns and also that they have some strategies in mind to minimise risk. As a parent we’d like to remove risk from our kids’ lives but this is unrealistic. As kids grow up their world rapidly expands taking them further away from the safe confines of home, and exposing them to new and potentially risky situations and people. Our hope is that our kids are able to avoid or counter the risk as much as humanly possible. One way of assessing this is asking them to convince you that they are responsible, old enough and possess sufficient awareness to go into new situations and places. “Convince me!” may well be the smartest two words you’ll ever use as a parent. It may stop pester-power in its tracks and at the same time induce your child or young person to think ahead and better prepare for spreading their wings when you don’t feel they are quite ready. Michael Gross
