BOYS HAIRCUTS Students are required to wear their hair in a neat and tidy manner. Haircuts should be of an even grade. Hair should be well brushed and combed and it is assumed that hair will not be in such a condition as to invite comment. Please be aware of the following: •

Extreme styles of hair are not permitted.

Gel, mousse and hair spray or other similar substances should not be used.

There will be no undercuts or steps.

Nothing shorter than a number 4 comb is acceptable.

Hair should not extend below the eyebrows or touch the shirt collar.

Beards should be always well groomed / or clean shaven.

Long sideburns are not permitted.

Students who do not abide by the haircut requirements will be asked to fix the identified problem and not return to school until the issue is resolved.

Regular hair blitzs will be conducted to enforce these expectations.

PDHPE| WEEK 7 Welcome Back Bellfield College! It has been a long time since we have had the whole school back on campus and it has been amazing to be in the company of all our students once again.

AFTERNOON SPORT IS BACK ON There is no doubt about the importance of regular physical activity in a student’s life that not only helps them to stay healthy but also optimizes their mind-set to improve alertness, attention, and motivation. We are so happy to announce that Sport is back on Wednesday afternoons for Years 7 and 8 and Friday afternoons for Years 9 and 10; however, for the remainder of the year sport may look and feel a little different due to Covid Protocols.

Sport will be conducted by year groups ONLY playing at once while the other year group will be participating in fun indoor activities before they swap for the second period. All covid protocols will be in put in place to ensure safe facility and participant practices. Some of these protocols include hygiene practices, sanitization of both hands and equipment before and after use, attendance and limited shared equipment as much as possible.

As the end of year approaches remember to maintain your routine, stay organised and keep working hard.

HSIE| ANCIENT CHINA Week 7 sees the return of all students back on campus and by this time the year 12 cohort is in full swing with their HSC exams in progress, so, it’s been a big week for everyone involved. In HSIE, the year 8’s have been exploring the Spanish conquest of the America’s and the reasons behind the downfall of ancient empires at the hands of the Europeans. In this process, they have learnt Spanish words like ‘conquistador’ meaning conqueror.

Year 9 has begun the inquiry into the causes of World War II, which began just over 20 years after World War I. They learnt that the origins of World War II ironically lay as much in the causes that ended World War I, particularly the very Treaty of Versailles that has been celebrated as the armistice that ended World War I.

Commerce law elective students have completed their unit on law in action and will now be doing the topic on Travel. In this unit, students learn about things like choosing locations to travel to, creating travel budgets, selecting travel insurance, and learning about travel safety and general security in places of choice.

STEM YEAR 7| BELLFIELD ROBOTICS RETURNS!

Now that we’ve returned to campus in full, Bellfield Robotics as finally had the chance to hit the ground running! This week we welcomed back our Virtual Robotics team from back in September alongside some new recruits for our first face to face build challenge.

We began with celebratory grapes as promised for the Virtual Robotics students in recognition of their efforts earlier in the year, and then followed up with a discussion of our plans for Bellfield Robotics. 2022 presents a wide array of great opportunities for Robotics and programming, with more lessons in TAS, weekly Robotics club sessions and a variety competition for students to engage in and demonstrate their skills. Potential competitions include the FIRST Robotics Competition, the World Robotics Olympiad and RoboCup Junior – the latter includes divisions such as Rescue Line and Rescue Maze for accident management robots; OnStage for those interested in encoding the dramatic arts; and Soccer for those more sports minded.

Finally, we undertook a crowd favourite build challenge to get to grips with the LEGO SPIKE Prime kits: Hopper Races! The two newcomers, Ali and Syed, had a long-legged racing machine that proved the most effective in the two rounds of rushed racing.

ARABIC YEAR 7 | ADVANCED The Year 7 Arabic students are studying the topic "Special Occasions" this term. They are learning culture specific phrases used in Arabic that are associated with congratulating and greeting people for a special occasion. The grammar focus this term is on prepositions. Some

The students designed some greetings cards and in the coming weeks they will learn how to write an invitation. The Arabic yearly exam was held in Week 5 and most students achieved great results! A special mention to Ali Hussain Syed, Khalil Farhat and Hassan Mohamad-Ali on their outstanding results! It has been great to see the Year 7 students return to campus. They were committed to their online learning, and they should be commended for their efforts. Well, done Year 7! 8

Connecting with Boys by Michael Grose

Teaching, raising and communicating with boys has long been a fascination of mine. As a primary teacher it was boys who provided me with the most joy and the most headaches. As a father of a boy and two girls it was my son who provided the most sleepless nights, although all gave me my fair share. As a parenting educator I always field more queries about raising boys than girls. Questions about boys have usually focused on learning, lack of confidence and poor or aggressive behaviour while queries about girls have often had a relationship or mental health or focus. Fortunately there have been some great boy champions in this part of the world who have shown the way for parents, teachers and other professionals. Steve Biddulph, Dr Tim Hawkes and Maggie Dent are personal favourites. While each comes from a different background and offers a diverse perspective, they each share the same belief that adults must form deep connections with boys if they are to influence them, especially in adolescence.

The need for approval Retired psychologist and esteemed parenting educator and author Steve Biddulph emphasises the importance of adults liking boys and feeling comfortable in their company. Teachers in particular will experience success, he maintains, if the boys believe that they genuinely like and approve of them. Conversely, boys shut down and won’t try for teachers who don’t understand or like them. Approval is at the heart of successfully teaching and raising boys. The place of banter Esteemed educator Dr Tim Hawkes, author of Ten conversations you must have with your son, maintains that banter and small talk are essential elements in conversations with boys. He busts the myth that ‘boys don’t talk’ wide open and says that fun, trivia and jest are the foundations for more serious, significant conversations that a parent will have with their sons. Dr Hawkes encourages parents to have serious conversations with boys about the things that really matter such as values, health and sex, rather than hope that their sons will develop their own ideas by osmosis, or worse, from peers and social media. Dr Hawkes revealed a communication gem in his book. He wrote that family banter is the secret ingredient that allows parents to hold meaningful conversations with teenage boys. He’s on the money, as fun and laughter provide parents with permission to take their children to some serious spaces for enlightenment and learning. Avoiding shame Parenting author and educator, and former teacher and counsellor Maggie Dent reminds parents and teachers that many boys battle both their physiology and a sense of shame when they move into adolescence. Contrary to popular opinion, teen boys crave connection with significant adults. Our clumsiness and unease in their company often becomes a barrier. Dent’s experience of raising sons, as well as her professional work with teen boys has taught her that adults need to show compassion, commitment and communication smarts if they are to connect with boys. Ask what they think to find out what they feel

In my many years of experience in teaching and parenting boys, I’ve learned that if you want to find out how a boy is feeling, ask him what he is thinking. For instance, if he experiences rejection at school and he is obviously unhappy, ask him what he thinks about the situation rather than how he feels. He will actually tell you how he feels in the process. It is important that parents understand this and put this knowledge to good use if they want an entry point into their son’s emotional life. In closing Helping tween and teen boys navigate the world is challenging parenting territory. It’s tempting to put off the conversations that we need to have because they seem too hard to initiate. As the experts above state – each in their own way, the key to communication lies in our ability to form deep connections with the boys in our lives.

PARENT COMMUNICATION SENTRAL PARENT PORTAL Bellfield’s Student portal is a one-stop shop for everything. Students can access the portal using their school logon, which gives them access to their timetable, assessment marks, attendance history and reports from anywhere at any time. In addition, the parent portal provides parents with 24/7 access to their child’s data. Parents can log in to access their child’s reports, attendance and welfare details as well as updating family contact details.
