Seminar 1 / Low Cost and Low Embodied Carbon

Some Key Principles

Bell Phillips Architects presents research work entitled ‘low cost and low embodied carbon, some key principles’.

This seminar has stemmed from an appreciation that spiralling construction costs are making many housing projects unviable, and at the same time, embodied carbon is the elephant in the room which we all need to deal with. Key strategic design decisions can assist with resolving both of these related issues, and some of these principles will be discussed at the seminar.

Seminar 2 / Passivhaus & Affordable Homes

Delivering affordable homes that address the climate crisis and fuel poverty

With the government committed to reaching ‘net zero’ by 2050, local authorities are facing a challenge – how to meet climate change targets whilst delivering urgently needed affordable homes for their residents.

Using our six Passivhaus residential projects for The London Borough of Ealing as a case study, this seminar provides an overview of the climate crisis and construction industry, looking specifically at Passivhaus as a route to successful net zero, mid-rise and urban affordable housing schemes. Key topics include:

• Operational and embodied carbon

• Fabric First Design

• Passivhaus and passive design

• Passivhaus and net zero carbon

• Common myths

Seminar 3 / Delivering Housing on Small Sites

Using our extensive experience in successfully delivering on small sites, this seminar is aimed at Local Authority officers charged with housing delivery, regeneration and planning across the UK.

The London Plan 2021 introduced specific policies in relation to delivering housing on small sites (Policy H2: Small Sites). The policies seek to increase the number of homes being delivered on small sites by simplifying planning policy and setting local authorities challenging targets. This seminar provides the following;

• An overview of Policy H2; What is required of Local Authorities within London and what are the implications for planning and development for the UK.

• An exploration of the challenges and opportunities of developing Small Sites utilising case studies from our hands-on experience, including lessons learned.
