We’re having a celebration! 2020 marks Bell Shakespeare’s 30th anniversary. Ever since John Bell founded the Company in 1990, education has been at the core of our work. We couldn’t be prouder of the impact of our work for students and teachers so far. So we’ve decided to celebrate with a year of exciting new offerings and some old favourites. In theatres, I’ll be directing Hamlet and Janine Watson will be directing The Comedy of Errors. Just in case you can’t catch these shows in the theatre, we’re broadcasting them into schools nationally so no one will miss out. We’re also launching the Bell Shakespeare Shorts Festival, a national short film competition where students play director. We can’t wait to see the Shakespeare stories that you share with us and see your communities reflected against Shakespeare’s language and characters. The Players are back with three favourites – 2019’s smash hit Just Romeo and Juliet! in collaboration with the hilarious Andy Griffiths, and the return of Such Sweet Sorrow and Macbeth: The Rehearsal for senior students. Teachers won’t miss out either. There’s a Master Series at Bell Shakespeare HQ, taught by key Bell Shakespeare creatives Jess Chambers, James Evans and Huw McKinnon. And once again we’re offering fantastic opportunities for you and your students, such as the John Bell Scholarship, Regional Teacher Mentorship and Work Experience program. So, blow out the candles, have a slice of cake, and join us as we celebrate 30 years of Bell Shakespeare.

IN THEATRES HAMLET

Inside the glamorous court of Denmark in the 1960s, a family is torn apart by murder and betrayal. Outside, a country is threatened by Norway. And at the centre of this struggle is a man brimming with anguish. Hamlet is a portrait of a young man struggling with the death of his father, his mother’s hasty remarriage to his uncle, and the vision of his father’s ghost looming in his mind’s eye. A story of revenge, passion and deception, this is a Hamlet for our time. Bell Shakespeare opens its 30th year anniversary celebrations with one of Shakespeare’s most iconic and tragic works, directed by Artistic Director Peter Evans. Featuring Harriet Gordon-Anderson (The Miser) as a young man experiencing grief in its most complex and profound state, this Hamlet will be told through the lens of loss, betrayal and madness. Schools across Australia can watch a special national broadcast of the mainstage production from Sydney Opera House, alongside matinee performances in Sydney and Melbourne. HOW LONG?
