Head Coach 16th Year Belmont, 1992 An athletic department staple for nearing two decades, Seth Sheridan is entering his 16th year as the head coach of the Belmont women’s cross country and track and field programs. Sheridan has brought much attention to Belmont’s cross country program, through sustained excellence on the running course and in the classroom. Eight times Atlantic Sun Conference Coach of the Year, Sheridan directed the Bruins to an unrivaled seven conference cross country championships in the program’s 11 year history in the league. Belmont embarks upon its first season in the Ohio Valley Conference in the fall of 2012. Moreover, under Sheridan s watch, Belmont has stood tall against the nation s best. The Bruins have been ranked in the final U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) South Region Poll an astounding 11 consecutive years. This past fall, Sheridan s Bruins placed third at the Atlantic Sun Championships. Caitlin Standifer and Mia Elbon earned All-Conference honors, extending the Bruins’ staggering total of all-league performers to 33 since joining the A-Sun in 2001.
Individual title and Runner of the Year honors in consecutive years. Weaver went on to finish fifth at the NCAA South Region meet and 45th at Nationals - the best-ever performance by a Bruin runner, eclipsing Keely Weaver who qualified for the 2000 NCAA Cross Country Championship. Weaver paced three Bruins earning All-Conference honors, joined by Brittany Thune and Elizabeth Smothers. The program’s success has also permeated into unparalleled national academic distinction. Lauren Williams-Weaver was named to the 2007 NCAA Division I USTFCCCA All-Academic team. Furthermore, Belmont’s team GPA ranked in the Top 10 nationally a remarkable 10 consecutive years, including leading the nation in 1999 and 2001. The Bruins’ team GPA of 3.77 in 2007 ranked second nationally. All told, a Belmont runner received Atlantic Sun Academic All-Conference honors 113 times since 2001. In other words, roughly 95 percent of Sheridan’s runners during the Atlantic Sun Conference era held a GPA of 3.0 or higher. His track and field teams have also taken overwhelming strides. The Bruins finished a strong second place in the A-
Sun Championships in 2007 and 2008. Moreover, a record five student-athletes participated in the 2007 NCAA Regional meet in Columbia, Mo. - Lynette Rives, Lizz Pollock, Jessica Giles, Khalia Turner and Christa Coppin. School and conference records continue to fall daily. Prior to coming to Belmont, Sheridan served on the track coaching staff at Nashville’s Montgomery Bell Academy in 1996. From 1993-1994 Sheridan was an assistant coach for Elvis Ford at Austin Peay State University. While at Peay, he was instrumental in the development of the distance runners. Before his stint in Clarksville, he served as the boys’ track coach at the University School of Nashville in 1993. A native of Mansfield, Pa., Sheridan was an all-district performer and two-time national qualifier during his collegiate career at Belmont. He is married to the former Beth Tallent, a former AllAmerican runner at Vanderbilt University. The couple has two sons, Brennen and Brooks. The Sheridans reside near Franklin, Tennessee.
In 2009, senior Brittany Thune defended her Atlantic Sun Conference Individual Title and status as league Runner of the Year. Thune also was named to the USTFCCCA All-South Region Team, the 12th time since 1999 a Bruin female runner as been so honored. Moreover, Thune was showered with academic honors. Among her numerous awards, Thune was named A-Sun AllAcademic, ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American, Academic AllDistrict, Atlantic Sun Female StudentAthlete of the Year, Belmont University Presidential Scholar of the Year and the fifth Belmont student-athlete inprogram history to receive an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. In 2007, Lauren Williams Weaver became the first Bruin to win the A-Sun

Belmont U n i ve r s i t y
Belmont University sits on 75 historic acres two miles southwest of downtown Nashville, Tenn., a thriving metropolis known worldwide as Music City USA. In the mid-1800s, the land the university now occupies was known as the Belle Monte estate, the Victorian home of one of Tennessee s wealthiest couples, Joseph and Adelicia Acklen. Their antebellum Belmont Mansion remains today, flanked by university buildings separated in age by more than a century. Belmont University is among the fastest growing Christian universities in the nation with more than 6,300 students hailing from every state and 25 countries. Since 2000, enrollment has risen from just under 3,000 to 6,374 students for the 2011-12 school year, marking an increase of 114 percent. As enrollment steadily increases, so does the quality and diversity of each new class. Incoming freshmen represented 43 states and eight foreign countries and scored an average of 26.3 on the ACT. Intent on being a leader among teaching universities, Belmont brings together the best of liberal arts and professional education in a Christian community of learning and service. Belmont was ranked fifth on the U.S. News & World Report listing of "Best Universities" in the South in the master’s category for the 2011 edition of
16
America’s Best Colleges, making Belmont the highest ranked university in Tennessee in this category. In addition, Belmont was named a top "Upand-Comer" for the third year in a row, a high honor that indicates the strength of the university’s reputation and innovations. Both Rolling Stone and Time magazines have hailed Belmont’s Mike Curb College of Entertainment & Music Business as one of the best music business programs in the country. The Jack C. Massey Graduate School of Business has been named the best MBA program in the region, and Belmont s business administration and accounting programs have earned accreditation by AACSB International, the premier accrediting agency in that arena. Moreover, Belmont s entrepreneurship program has been named a National Model Undergraduate Program by the United States Association of Small Business and Entrepreneurship and recognized as a Top 25 program by the Princeton Review. Located in the heart of Music City USA (Nashville, Tenn.), one of Belmont s consistent success stories comes from its world-renowned music and music business programs. Several big names in the music industry started their careers at Belmont including American Idol
finalist Melinda Doolittle, Christian recording artists Ginny Owens and Steven Curtis Chapman, and country stars Trisha Yearwood, Lee Ann Womack, Brad Paisley and Josh Turner. The annual Christmas at Belmont concert showcases performing ensembles from many different genres and has been broadcast nationwide on PBS eight years in a row. The University recently added a songwriting major to its offerings, one of only a few such programs in the country. Belmont is a student-focused, Christian community of learning and service where students hear from their first visit to campus until the day they graduate that they are created for a purpose in life. The Belmont faculty and staff dedicate themselves to preparing and empowering students to find their passion and use it to change the world. The university seeks to show every student how the love of Christ can compel them to lead lives of disciplined intelligence, compassion, courage and faith. As Belmont s academic program offerings grow, so too does the physical campus. Additions include McWhorter Hall, Patton Hall and Bear House, Randall and Sadie Baskin Center of Law, The Gordon E. Inman Center, Troutt Theater, the Curb Event Center and E.S Rose Park.

MISSION STATEMENT
N
Enrollment is up 114 percent since Fall 2000. The overwhelming progress is the latest validation that Belmont University has the right vision for its future," said Dr. Robert Fisher, president of the university. "Belmont University is on a roll. The abilities of our incoming freshmen and our rapidly rising enrollment show we are on the right track."
I
@BelmontXCTF
In addition to his success as both faculty member and higher education administrator, Fisher is also an accomplished author with his most recent work, Life Is a Gift: Inspiration from the Soon Departed, released in 2008. Co-authored with his wife Judy, Life Is a Gift features a collection of lessons learned from interviews with 104 terminally ill patients of Alive Hospice in Nashville. Dr. Fisher previously co-authored Real Dream Teams: Seven Practices Used by World-Class Team Leaders to Achieve Extraordinary Results, published by St. Lucie Press, with Belmont’s Vice President of University Advancement Dr. Bo Thomas.
ENROLLMENT GAINS UNDER FISHER
U
But Dr. Fisher’s greatest sense of accomplishment comes not from new campus structures, stronger endowments or an ever-increasing student population. Rather, he measures achievement through witnessing education’s impact on each individual student. "The student is the focus of all our efforts here at Belmont," Fisher said, "and our top priority is meeting the needs of those students.
Prior to his appointment at Belmont, Fisher was vice president for academic affairs at Arkansas State University for four years and was dean of the School of Business at Henderson State University, his alma mater, for 10 years. Fisher earned a B.S.B.A. from Henderson State, an M.B.A. from the University of Memphis and a Ph.D. from the University of Arkansas.
R
Academically, the University has added numerous new interdisciplinary programs in the past decade, including Social Entrepreneurship, New Century Journalism, Pharmacy and, most recently, the Belmont College of Law which will welcome its first class this fall. In addition, Fisher worked to secure Belmont as the host site for the 2008 Town Hall Presidential Debate, a historic event broadcast worldwide that also led to Fisher’s selection as 2008 Tennessean of the Year and 2010 Nashvillian of the Year.
My life’s mission is to help create experiences that transform people, especially students, in ways that enable them to become all they were created to be."
B
Dr. Robert (Bob) Fisher serves as President of Belmont University, a position he has held since April 2000. During his tenure the University’s enrollment has more than doubled while the campus itself has expanded significantly with the additions of the Curb Event Center and Beaman Student Life Center, the Gordon E. Inman Center, the Troutt Theater complex, McWhorter Hall and several new residence halls and parking garages. Under his leadership Belmont University also broke into the Top 5 for the first time in the Best Regional Universities South category in U.S. News & World Report’s analysis of America’s Best Colleges. Soaring to No. 5 in the 2011 edition, Belmont was also honored for the third year in a row as one of the top schools nationwide for "leading the pack in improvements and innovative changes."

Now entering his 17th year as Director of Athletics, Mike Strickland has led Belmont’s Department of Athletics through its infancy stages as a new NCAA Division I program to become one that sees annual success on the field and in the classroom. During his tenure at Belmont, the program has expanded the number of teams it fields, transitioned from an NCAA Division I independent to the Atlantic Sun Conference and now the Ohio Valley Conference, enhanced its facilities, and established a reputation producing winning teams and distinguished student-athletes. Since arriving in Nashville in 1996, Strickland has overseen the inception of six new sports at Belmont: women’s soccer, women’s golf and men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field. In addition, the University has built the Frances Bond Davis Tennis Courts, as well the most recent partnership with Metro Parks for athletic fields at E.S. Rose Park. This exciting new venture houses Belmont baseball, softball, soccer, and track & field. During his tenure, Strickland has overseen a program expansion from 11 to 17 teams of competition, spurred athletic facility enhancement and forged a reputation of producing winning teams and distinguished student-athletes. In 2008, Belmont became the first school in Atlantic Sun Conference history to represent the league in three consecutive NCAA Men’s Basketball Championships. Adding conference championships in baseball and men s basketball in conference campaigns, Belmont Athletics won a staggering 36 Atlantic Sun Conference Championships in 11 years. In addition, the school has hosted 11 conference championships over the past seven years, most recently the 2011 A-Sun Cross Country Championships. Strickland has taken a leadership role in the A-Sun serving as chairman of the tournament committee and various other leadership capacities. In addition to the program’s success on the field, his tenure has seen the building of the exquisite Curb Event Center. The $52 million facility, which opened in the fall of 2003, has become the centerpiece of the athletics pro-
18
gram. The complex houses a new 5,000-seat arena for basketball and volleyball, locker rooms for all sports, a training facility and weight room, as well as administrative offices for the Athletic Department. Off the field, the athletic department has made academic achievement the cornerstone of its definition of success. Belmont has won the Atlantic Sun Academic Trophy eight of the past 10 years. The Bruins boasted over 76 percent of their student athletes with a gradepoint average of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale during the past academic year. Belmont is the only school to win the trophy five straight times (2002-2006). Also of significance, Belmont has earned distinction from the NCAA in each of their Academic Progress Rate (APR) reports, including a program-best seven teams in 2011-12. Strickland brings varied years of experience to the program, including nine years as athletics director at Murray State University prior to coming to Belmont. While at Murray State, Strickland served on numerous Ohio Valley Conference committees as well as serving on the NCAA I-AA football advisory committee and the NCAA rifle committee. Prior to serving at Murray State, Strickland was an Associate Athletics Director at Wichita State University from 1983-87, where he was responsible for all business operations for the department. Strickland earned his bachelor’s degree in political science from Georgia Southern University and a master’s degree in public administration from the University of Georgia. In June of 2009, Strickland received the Under Armour National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) Division I Southeast Region A.D. of the Year Award. Strickland was honored at the annual NACDA convention in Orlando, Fla. Strickland is married to the former Martha Thomas, an English instructor at Nashville State Community College. The couple has two children: Leanna Elizabeth, a graduate of the University of Tennessee, and Sara Grace, a Belmont University graduate who is married to Belmont alumnus Jared Vaughn. Strickland has one grandson, Jacob.

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE
Academic E x c e l l e n c e In eleven storied years in the Atlantic Sun Conference, Belmont University enjoyed unparalleled success on the court and in the classroom. Belmont claimed the league’s All-Academic Trophy a remarkable nine times in 11 years, including five consecutive years upon entry into the A-Sun. Belmont student-athletes posted a 3.348 grade-point average (GPA) in the 2012 spring semester marking both the highest department GPA since Belmont became an NCAA Division I member institution in 1997 and the 29th consecutive semester in which the departmental GPA has exceeded 3.0. This past year, 165 out of 216 Belmont student-athletes earned All-Academic honors, giving the university the greatest percentage of All-Academic honorees at 76.39 percent. To be named an A-Sun All-Academic honoree, a student-athlete must achieve a 3.00 GPA or higher in the classroom during the academic year. The student-athlete must participate in a conference sponsored sport and be on the team’s final squad list.
R
Mick Hedgepeth and Scott Saunders of men’s basketball and Drew Turner of baseball became the latest members to join the exclusive Belmont fraternity of Capital One Academic All-District honorees. Since 2000, Belmont has had 49 All-District recipients in 11 sports. Belmont also ranks among the nation’s best in Capital One Academic All-America selections (19) since 2001.
B
In the recent NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) Public Recognition List report, a program-best seven Bruin teams ranked among the top 10 percent nationally in measures of eligibility and retention. Men’s basketball and men’s soccer stand among a handful of institutions to have been honored all seven years of the APR program’s existence. Adding Belmont’s contributions, the OVC had a total of 25 teams receive APR Public Recognition.
We continue to marvel at the vast achievement of our student-athletes, Belmont University Director of Athletics Mike Strickland said. Embodying lofty standards in the classroom while also competing for and winning championships on the field of play is something that merits high praise.

In order to promote a positive atmosphere, the strength and conditioning staff provide the athlete with a safe, clean, professional environment. We strive to challenge our athletes by way of free weights, multijoint exercises, and multiple sets. While keeping the athlete’s sport in mind, we individualize the programs as much as possible, focusing on weaknesses in order to prevent injuries and help them stay as competitive as possible for as long as possible.

OHIO VALLEY CONFERENCE streaks from 1960-62 and 1987-89 had been the previous best streaks). Over that time period (2009-12) the OVC is one of just nine conferences nationally to win a NCAA Tournament game in each season and one of only three non-BCS leagues (joining the Atlantic 10 and WCC) to do so.

In the late 1970s, women’s athletics began somewhat of a rebirth on the national scene as the NCAA began sponsoring and marketing women’s sports. Recognizing the need to provide increased opportunities for female athletes, the OVC established women’s championships in the sports of basketball, tennis and track in 1977, with cross country and volleyball added over the next four years. Those sports were initially governed by the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW), but the overall strength of women’s programs in the league was demonstrated by the automatic bids the OVC instantly received when the NCAA became the governing body in 1982.

Now in its 65th year, the Ohio Valley Conference continues to build on the success that has made it the nation’s eighth-oldest NCAA Division I conference. In May 2011 the Conference expanded for the second time in four years, adding Belmont University which begins competition in the 2012-13 academic year. The addition of Belmont gives the OVC 12 members, the most the league has had at one time in its illustrious history. The move added a second team in the city of Nashville and was the first addition to the league since Southern Illinois University Edwardsville joined in 2008. The 2009-10 school year saw a change in leadership as Beth DeBauche was named the seventh full-time Commissioner in league history on July 28, 2009. She is currently one of just five females to be the head of a Division I conference, and one of just eight to lead a Division I conference all-time. The last three commissioners of the OVC have moved onto jobs as the commissioner of the Big Ten, Big 12 and the Mid-American Conferences. The OVC’s proud history dates back to 1948, but seeds for the new league were actually planted in 1941. It was then that Roy Stewart, the athletics director at Murray State, Charles Turkey Hughes, the athletics director at Eastern Kentucky, and Kelly Thompson, the public relations director at Western Kentucky, first broached the idea of forming a new conference. Discussions were put on hold by World War II, but reemerged Feb. 27-28, 1948 at the Kentucky Hotel in Louisville as the three original institutions combined with Morehead State, Louisville and Evansville to form the OVC. A sampling of former OVC football stars, some of whom were AllAmericans during their collegiate careers before achieving stardom at the professional ranks, include Jim Youngblood and Larry Schreiber (Tennessee Tech), Phil Simms (Morehead State), Virgil Livers and Dale Lindsey (Western Kentucky), Myron Guyton and Chad Bratzke (Eastern Kentucky), Cortland Finnegan (Samford) and Tony Romo (Eastern Illinois). In 2008, former Tennessee State standout Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie became just the fourth NFL First Round draft pick in OVC history when he was selected 16th overall by the Arizona Cardinals. He would break into the starting lineup halfway through his rookie season and started at cornerback for the Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII. The OVC has had at least one former player named a NFL Pro Bowl selection in four of the past six seasons. In men s basketball, the OVC has shined. The OVC has now won NCAA Tournament games in four-straight seasons, something that has never happened in league history (three-game winning

Over its 64 years, OVC teams have garnered national championships and bowl games in football, along with national team or individual titles in the sports of rifle, cross country, track and golf. The OVC has also produced several Olympic athletes, including Murray State s Morgan Hicks, who was a member of the 2004 United States Olympic Rifle Team and Morehead State s Brian Shimer who competed in five Winter Olympics in bobsled (winning a bronze medal in 2002) and coached the 2010 United States bobsled team to its first gold medal since 1948. In addition, some of the greatest players in professional sports were educated at OVC institutions. The list includes former greats such as football s Phil Simms (Morehead State), basketball’s Clem Haskins (Western Kentucky) and Bubba Wells (Austin Peay) and two-sport star Steve Hamilton (Morehead State) to present-day standouts like basketball player Trenton Hassell (Austin Peay), football player Tony Romo (Eastern Illinois) and baseball players George Sherrill (Austin Peay) and Jon Rauch (Morehead State). Hamilton is the only athlete to ever play in the NCAA Basketball Championship, a Major League Baseball World Series (New York Yankees) and a NBA Championship Series (Los Angeles Lakers). The vision of leadership demonstrated by the Founding Fathers in 1948 remains alive today as the Ohio Valley Conference prepares for the future. One example is in regard to the current trend in collegiate athletics administration for increased involvement of university presidents in setting policies and making rules. The presidents of OVC institutions, however, have always governed the Conference, long before presidential governance became a national theme. The Ohio Valley Conference sponsors the following sports: baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, tennis and track for men, and basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track and volleyball for women. In addition, the OVC also sponsors the combined men’s and women’s sport of rifle. Now in its seventh decade of competition, the Ohio Valley Conference has grown significantly from its humble beginnings while increasing the number of athletics opportunities it provides for students. Current league representatives include charter members Eastern Kentucky University, Morehead State University and Murray State University, along with Austin Peay State University, Belmont University, Eastern Illinois University, Jacksonville State University, Southeast Missouri State University, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, Tennessee State University, Tennessee Technological University and the University of Tennessee at Martin.
