Trust our Fitting Specialists to What makes us “Fitting Specialists”? When it comes to buying school and sports shoes for your child, it is vitally important to have them fitted correctly, and that involves more than just finding the right size. At The Athlete’s Foot, our staff know that every child’s foot has different fitting requirements.
Every staff member at The Athlete’s Foot is required to undertake extensive training covering basic foot anatomy, physiology and fitting techniques for every type of foot. Using our exclusive Fitprint ® system, our “Fitting Specialists” will determine the type and amount of cushioning, motion control and stability in a shoe that is right for your child. No matter how active, or what sport a child plays, The Athlete’s Foot is the one stop shop for the perfect fit in school and sports shoes. With our extensive range of brands and styles all your child’s shoe requirements are met.
What does the Fitprint ® system tell me? Fitprint ® highlights the pressure points in your feet, which helps our staff determine how much cushioning and support your child requires. After analysing the results, our staff can select the best shoe for your child’s needs.
Fitprint is an exclusive and complimentary service ®

What happens when kids wear the wrong shoes? Children are constantly on the move, whether at school, at sport or just playing in the yard. In one school year alone, your child will spend over a thousand hours in their school shoes. It is important that your child wears a shoe that offers support, comfort and is built to last. It is crucial to have your child fitted properly for their school and sports shoes to prevent any long term and painful injuries such as lower leg pain and Severs disease (see page 8).
By wearing poor quality footwear, it is more likely that linings will tear, heels will collapse and shoe uppers will come away from the soles; leaving no support, protection or comfort for your child and increasing the risk of injury to the foot.
The damage being done to your child’s feet by wearing low quality, or ill fitting shoes, is not widely understood. What many people don’t realise is that lower back pain, bad posture, headaches, hips and leg problems can be attributed to your feet. 3 53675 BTS2011 A5 Brochure 12pp_FA2.indd 3

RUNNING SHOES OR CROSSTRAINING SHOES? Ru Running shoes are designed for heel to toe movement, which is excellent for running. Cross trainers are specially designed for all types of rapid movement, either front to back or side to side.
IMPORTANT FEATURES OF KIDS SPORTS SHOES 1. CUSHIONING 3. COMFORT Having shock absorption in a shoe enhances the durability of the midsole, which contains the support features.
2. SUPPORT To allow for the different movements possible when playing sports, it is important to have a very stable shoe. Different brands use different support features, so ask our “Fitting Specialists” for advice to find the best shoe for the combination of activities your child plans to do.
Shoes should be comfortable from the start. There is no need to break in correctly fitted shoes. It’s important to also remember that your child’s feet can expand by up to half a size after exercise, so don’t purchase shoes which are too tight.
4. DURABILITY To maintain durability, the shoes must match the activities your child plays. We provide a range of shoes with durable outsole and upper materials. Double stitching, especially around the toe area will also add to the life of the shoes.

Kids s t o o B Regardless of what surface your child plays on, or what code of football they involve themselves in, The Athlete’s Foot will help you choose the ideal boot. To cater for your child’s requirements, we provide moulded and bladed football boots. With the help of our “Fitting Specialists” to find that perfect fit, your child’s boot will offer them the best support, protection and comfort where they need it most. It is important to get a good quality boot that fits properly, especially the heel, in order to assist in the prevention of Severs disease.

Does your child complain about heel pain?
WHAT AT IS SEVERS DISEASE? Severs disease generally occurs between the ages of 8 and 14 and is more common in boys. The foot bones often grow faster than surrounding muscles and tendons. Consequently the foot becomes tight and the heel area is less flexible and more prone to injury. The injury is a result of excessive weight bearing activity or overuse of repetitive heel strikes associated with sports. Our footwear brands are aware of the importance of preventing Severs disease, which is why their shoes provide features such as well cushioned midsoles, raised heels, supportive heel counters and medial and lateral support.

stss to look after your kids' feet IMPORTANT FEATURES OF NETBALL SHOES 1. CUSHIONING When stopping suddenly to shoot or pass during play, the force applied to your feet and legs can exceed your body weight by up to 6 times. That’s a lot of stress – so cushioning is one of the most critical features of a netball shoe.
2. TRACTION Netball can be played on a variety of different surfaces. A good outersole will allow you to pivot easier, provide grip and will ensure the shoe lasts longer.
3. STABILITY With so many stopping, starting and jarring actions, stability is critical in a good netball shoe. Look for a shoe which allows your foot to sit down inside the shoe and has a firm heel counter.
4. SHOCK ABSORPTION With so much pressure on your feet, adding an innersole can help to provide you with extra support and cushioning.
Netball is a sport which is very demanding on legs and feet. It is important to fit your child with the correct shoe that will not only help to increase performance but more importantly, reduce the chance of injury and strain. Netball is a demanding sport, requiring a shoe built to withstand the pressure of the sport. Lower limb injuries associated with netball are often caused by jarring forces and rapid starting and stopping actions. Stability and shock absorption in a netball shoe are important to reduce the amount of stress to children’s feet and legs. In assessing your child’s individual foot type against footwear requirements, our staff can recommend a shoe that will provide the utmost support and comfort.

Trust our Fitting Specialists to Podiatrists work with The Athlete’s Foot to give you the best advice Message from Podiatrist Jayne Arlett “As a podiatrist I see many adult foot and leg problems that originated in childhood. Sadly, many would have been preventable, and many relate to poor footwear choices in years gone by. Children’s feet grow at a rapid rate – commonly growing a half size every few months in the early years.
FITTING TIPS 9 It is false economy to buy shoes too big. Children are tough on shoes – typically children wear shoes out before they grow out of them!
9 Have your child’s feet measured by a qualified shoe fitter each time you buy shoes
9 Select school shoes with quality sports shoe technology
9 Periodically check foot length. You know it’s time to get new shoes when the big toe is touching the end of the shoe!
9 Periodically check for signs of wear on the upper and outsole, torn linings or collapsed heels.
It is vital that children are fitted byy a qualified person who has a good understanding of not just shoes, but the foot structure and it’s requirements. Spend just a few minutes in the school yard and you will realise that kids don’t just walk they run! As adults we would not consider running each day on hard surfaces without well cushioned shoes but sadly most children's school shoes do not offer adequate levels of cushioning and this factor alone is a major contributor to children’s foot and leg injury. Children’s feet must be measured by a qualified footwear specialist every time.
