Introduction Fran Kirby
When I was asked to write an introduction to the booklet celebrating the joys of spring track, I decided to avoid drowning the reader with statistics such as the school’s wonlost records, its number of all-league and all-New England honorees over the years, and various school records. Turn this page, and a few more, and you will have all of the information you may require. To me, this night of celebration of track is more about the glories of spring, the boundless energies of youth, and the opportunities for boys to find the satisfaction and self-esteem that come from a willingness to try something totally new, setting their sights on personal and team goals, and then going out on the track and reaching them. The opportunities exist to listen to one’s coaches, work hard, and, for example, soar over the pole vault bar at feet at one of the championship meets and take home a first place medal. But it isn’t just about the natural athlete who can succeed so impressively. It may be something that seems quite modest to most of us—the annual example of a distance runner who never scores a single point in a meet, but who feels great about getting his time in the mile down from : to : in just eight weeks, inspiring him, as often happens, to pursue a life-long dedication to fitness. He is just as much of a winner as the champion vaulter We also honor people like him tonight.
Yet in a larger, more important sense, I also ask you to celebrate the bold vision and stimulating culture of this great school. I am a proud member of a community that loves to win, and I, personally, will never apologize to anyone beyond our campus for Belmont Hill’s legacy of accomplishments, be they in the classroom, in the theatre, in the Chapel, or on the athletic fields. I want to make the case that winning at Belmont Hill does not always focus on the mere numbers on the scoreboard at the end of the game or on the left-hand side of the scores column in the sports section of the Sunday Globe. Any time a committed group like the one here tonight gathers to celebrate a sports program, to recognize a retiring faculty member, or to tell tall tales at a reunion weekend, we are all winners. When a Middle School student picks up a musical instrument or tries out for the spring musical, when an upper schooler overcomes his
bashfulness and does a spectacular job in the Woodbury public speaking contest, we are all winners. We are all winners because we have a caring, take-charge faculty who are always ready to applaud the achievements of colleagues and students alike, volunteer as chaperones for trips abroad, or drive student volunteers to a local soup kitchen. Lest I move too far from the purpose of this night, I must say that the various successes the track teams and their coaches have enjoyed over the years would not have been as impressive were it not for the inspiration of the other winners that give vibrant life to every other aspect of our school community. It is within the context of their exemplary dedication to our community that we, the coaching staff and athletes of the Belmont Hill Track Team, dare to push ourselves further.
