Extracurricular Awards Continued DIVERSITY LEADERSHIP AWARD The Diversity Leadership Award recognizes those boys who have worked to advance cultural inclusiveness and awareness at Belmont Hill by displaying a commitment to the community, a genuine care for others, and the courage to act for equity and justice. The recipients of this year’s award exemplify the School’s mission of “working together” as they collaborated with faculty, alumni, and other students to promote the values of diversity and multiculturalism which the school so highly values. 2020 RECIPIENTS: Griffin Hamilton ’20 Ysael Porro ‘20 WILLEY SEXTANT PRIZE FOR CREATIVE WRITING Established in honor of Joseph C. Willey, a member of the English faculty for 35 years, and awarded for excellence in prose or poetry published in The Sextant or for qualities of leadership demonstrated on behalf of the magazine. 2020 RECIPIENTS: Renny Gong ’20 Ikenna Ugbaja ’21 WOODBURY SPEAKING PRIZE Sponsored by the Lyceum and established by the late Glen P. Woodbury and Mrs. Woodbury, this prize is awarded to that boy judged to have made the best presentation of his subject. Extracurricular Awards Continued HAYDEN GAYLORD COON DRAMA PRIZE Established by the family of Hayden Gaylord Coon ’50 and awarded to a member of the Upper School for outstanding contributions to dramatics during the school year. ACTING: Daniel Rashes ’22 PROSPECTOR AWARD Given for the greatest artistic and/or literary contribution to the Middle School magazine. 2020 RECIPIENT: Luca Mezzanotte ’23 THE PAUL J. ZOFNASS ’65 ENVIRONMENTAL AWARD Established in 2010 by Paul Zofnass ’65, who has dedicated his career to environmental issues, a passion that began at Belmont Hill. This prize goes to a student for his outstanding contributions to sustainability on or off campus or for exceptional work in the study of Environmental Science. 2020 RECIPIENTS: John Henehan ’20 Holden Present ’20 Charles Stevenson ’20 GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP AWARD The Global Citizenship Prize is awarded annually to those students who, through travel, service, and/or study, have demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to global engagement and moved our community forward in its mission to educate capable and responsible global citizens. 2020 RECIPIENT: Rhocar Constant ’20

THE BELL PRIZE Given for outstanding work and interest in the Middle School newspaper. 2020 RECIPIENTS: Michael Bobo ’23 Alexander Lo ’23 Cooper Nelson ’23 HAMPERS LYCEUM AWARD Established in 1984 by the Hampers family and awarded to that member of the Lyceum who has contributed the most to the Upper School debating program through leadership, speaking ability, and performance at tournaments. 2020 RECIPIENTS: Matthew Drucker ’20 Zephan Kraus ’20 Jonah Wyett ’20


COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARDS BURT COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD The Burt Community Service Award was established in 1985 and named for Edward M. Burt, a faculty member for 20 years at Belmont Hill who was instrumental in helping to establish our Community Service program. 2019-2020 BELMONT HILL COMMUNITY SERVICE HIGHLIGHTS • Weekly visits to Meadowgreen Rehabilitation and Nursing Center (Upper School) and Butler Elementary School (Form III) • Breast Cancer Awareness Cookie Sale to raise funds for Dana Farber Oncology Institute • The annual Thanksgiving Turkey Dinner Drive celebrated its 10th year. • Dana Farber Bloodmobile Blood Drive • Christmas in the City • Valentine’s Day Flower Sale and PWaP Merchandise Sale to raise funds for Party With a Purpose (PWaP), in support of the Children’s Miracle Hospital Network • New Life Furniture Bank of MA working to rehabilitate used furniture, in partnership with Dana Hall • Forms I and II Service Day at 15 sites throughout the Boston area • Grocery bag collection to benefit the Belmont Food Pantry • Cereal/Supplies Drive to benefit Pine Street Inn • Card and letter writing campaigns in support of frontline staff at Boston Medical Center and long-term residents at the Hebrew Senior Life Rehabilitation Center • Other assorted Covid-19 response support

WARBURG COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD The Max Warburg Community Service Award was established by the Coppedge Family in 1991 in memory of Max Warburg, a young boy who was diagnosed with leukemia in 1990, yet continued to face life with optimism, courage, and cheerful determination. He died shortly after having a bone marrow transplant in December 1990 — just four days after receiving his acceptance to Belmont Hill School. Many in the Belmont Hill community participated in the bone marrow drives. This award recognizes the unselfish involvement of a member or members of the senior class in community service throughout their Belmont Hill years. 2020 RECIPIENT: Edward Madden ’20

BABE RUTH SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD Presented to a member or members of the Sixth Form, chosen by members of the faculty and the students in Forms V and VI for having made the greatest contribution to the spirit of sportsmanship and fair play during the school year. 2020 RECIPIENT: Isaiah Gomes ’20


Athletic Awards Continued THE DARREN D. GALLUP THREE-SPORT ATHLETE AWARD Approved in 2003 by the Athletic Policy Committee, this award is given in memory of Darren Gallup of the Class of 2003. Darren was a threesport athlete in Football, Hockey, and Lacrosse and a generous supporter of his teammates and friends. His broad participation as a student-athlete and positive impact have served as a model to others. KENNEY ’06 PRIZE Established in 2013 by classmates, family, faculty, and friends to honor the memory of Charles F. Kenney, Class of 2006. During his years at Belmont Hill, Charlie was a threesport athlete, a Woodbury Prize recipient in public speaking, dedicated to serving the school he loved, and an ideal friend and teammate. This award is presented annually to the Sixth Former who has lifted his teammates and coaches by his spirit, encouragement, leadership, and inspiration. 2020 RECIPIENTS: Blake Brookes ’20 Charles Richards ’20 THE INDEPENDENT SCHOOL LEAGUE AWARD OF EXCELLENCE Presented at each Independent School League member school to that student-athlete who best exemplifies the Independent School League ideals of integrity, sportsmanship, fair play, and good citizenship while participating as a multi-sport athlete during his ISL career. 2020 RECIPIENTS: Gregory Desrosiers ’20 Aidan McGaugh ’20

SCHOLASTIC ART & WRITING AWARDS Since 1923 the Scholastic Art Awards have been administered and in 1994 the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to providing inspiration and validation for the next generation of artists and writers, was formed. REGIONAL GOLD KEY: Morris Smith ’22

NATIONAL GOLD MEDAL: Daniel Xie ’24

THOMAS PHOTOGRAPHY PRIZE Established in 1986 by the Barry Brooks family and named by the family in 1998 in honor of Charles H. Thomas upon his retirement from Belmont Hill School, this prize is awarded to that student whose work in photography has shown outstanding growth in photojournalism or artistic expression. 2020 RECIPIENT: Ysael Porro ’20

TOGNERI ART PRIZE Established by the late Mrs. Togneri and supported by William H. L. Mitchell III ‘58, this prize is given in memory of the late Angelo M. Togneri, for 52 years a teacher of art and woodcarving at Belmont Hill. It is awarded to that boy, who in the last year has made the most significant achievement in creative arts. 2020 RECIPIENT: Alexander Sousa ‘22

JARED WATERBURY SCUDDER LATIN PRIZE Awarded to that student who has achieved the greatest mastery of the subject of Latin in an advanced class. 2020 RECIPIENTS: Sreetej Digumarthi ’21 Justin Paré ’21

HENRY S. ROBINSON ENGLISH PRIZE Established by the family of Henry S. Robinson, this prize is awarded to that senior who has most clearly and consistently demonstrated a sensitive appreciation of literature and outstanding skill in expository writing. 2020 RECIPIENTS: Renny Gong ’20 Elias Hyde ’20 BROWN BOOK AWARD Given by the Associated Alumni of Brown University to that boy in the Fifth Form, chosen by the faculty, who best combines academic excellence with clarity in written and spoken expression. 2020 RECIPIENTS: Adam Alto ’21 Justin Paré ’21 Matthew Travaglini ’21

DOWNES HISTORY PRIZE Established by Christopher N. Beal ‘59, in memory of Prentice G. Downes, inspired teacher and member of the faculty for 26 years, and awarded to a member of the Sixth Form for outstanding work in history. 2020 RECIPIENTS: Jeffrey Segel ’20 MONACO AMERICAN HISTORY PRIZE John Weldon ’20 FORM IV HISTORY PRIZE Awarded to a member of the Fourth Form who has distinguished himself by exhibiting dedication, passion, and scholarship, in their study of European History. 2020 RECIPIENT: Thomas Madden ’22

Given by the Monaco family in memory of Donato Monaco, to that student in the Fifth Form whose major research paper has demonstrated depth of interest, clarity, and high quality of research. TO BE AWARDED FALL 2020

H E L E N A W E I S T E R F U N K A WA R D Established by Mr. and Mrs. John Henry Funk in memory of his grandmother, and awarded to a student in the Middle School for personal integrity, good citizenship, and concern for the welfare of others, qualities which Mr. Funk, Director of the Middle School from 1952 to 1982, consistently inspired in his students.

YALE BOOK AWARD This prize is given to member of the Fifth Form who has demonstrated a commitment to learning, personal generosity and kindness, and selfsacrifice for the good of others.
