Strength, stamina, balance, speed, and coordination will take you a long way but at the end of the day it's really the psychological and mental attributes: not being afraid to lose, being able to learn from your mistakes, and controlling your emotions. Those are some of the things that go into making a great wrestler. Coach Don Bradley

William “Bingo” Emerson ’60 On the occasion of the 50th Reunion of the Class of 1960, we dedicate this program to William “Bingo” Emerson ’60 in honor of his commitment to wrestling and his great sacrifice for our country. On November 20, 1968, U.S. Marine Corps captain and aviator Emerson was shot down and killed over Vietnam. While at Belmont Hill, Bingo lettered in football, wrestling, and crew, serving as captain of the wrestling team in his senior year. Joseph Vaccaro III ’71 wrote in a 1971 Panel article that “Mr. Emerson possessed leadership qualities of the highest degree. These were most glaringly manifested on the athletic field, where he excelled not because of exceptionally superior talent but because of his determination and spirit.” In 1960, Bingo’s confidence and desire helped him to lead the Belmont Hill wrestling team to its first winning season. “For his performance Mr. Emerson was deservedly awarded the wrestling trophy for the greatest contribution to the sport. On the ball field as on the battlefield he never gave up.” Headmaster Charles F. Hamilton highlighted many of the same qualities when he wrote in the 1971 Panel article, “Bingo was a dedicated man — a person of great moral courage who lived his ideals and sacrificed his life for them. He abhorred war as much as any of us but he recognized the need to help…Combined with his moral courage was his physical courage and strength — the same kind we witnessed here in football and wrestling and crew. Add to this a capacity for leadership and you have a whole man.” His legacy lives on in the William “Bingo” Emerson wrestling trophy presented annually to the boy who, in the opinion of his coaches, has exhibited the greatest improvement in wrestling.

Wrestling and Working Together A. James Brodie

Wrestling started at Belmont Hill in  with the help of the first captain, Randall Thompson, Class of  and the first coaches, Mr. Smith, Mr. Test, and joining the team in , Mr. Fields. However, real success came when Belmont Hill parent and Springfield College’s champion grappler Mr. Gilbert Jordan took over the program in . “Thus, wrestling at Belmont Hill was born, attracting a strange mix of students who could not skate and were not tall enough to play basketball,” says wrestler Art Brooks ’. The sport space allocated was a storage room about twenty by fifteen feet, which became known as the “sweat box.” The Gil Jordan coaching method was simple, says Brooks, but practical: “to make novice wrestlers look good. Nothing fancy: two basic takedowns, two basic reversals, two pinning combinations, then practice these moves.” After the Belmont team won its first wrestling match in , early notable success included an undefeated season for sophomore Bob Watkins ’, who captured the New England Interscholastic Champion title in , followed by undefeated seasons for Rocky Gaynor ’ in both  and . Under Coach Jordan the team had its first winning season in  captained by senior William “Bingo” Emerson ’.

From Jordan’s retirement as coach in  until  Belmont Hill had only sporadic team success, but some individual accomplishments highlighted by Jim McGrath’s (Class of ) Graves-Kelsey championships in  and  and New England Interscholastic championship in . The coaches during those years were Messrs, Burnett, Kaiser, Zoeller and McClarnon. Rookie coach Robert Linberg took over in  and the program’s success continued to develop. Coach Linberg’s  team captured Belmont Hill’s first (and Linberg’s only) team victory at the Graves-Kelsey tournament. He coached Belmont Hill’s two-time Graves-Kelsey and New England Interscholastic champion, Peter Sullivan ’, as well as Chip Tarbell ’, who won the Graves-Kelsey tournament in  and later served for many years as an assistant wrestling coach. The  yearbook declares that “Tarbell’s win capped off one of the most successful wrestling records ever compiled at Belmont Hill.” However, Belmont Hill’s wrestling program seemed to lose some of the promise of the s: the team had some wonderful individual wrestlers but little success as a team. It was not until Don Bradley joined the team as an assistant coach in , and brought with him the idea of the wrestling as a team sport, that wrestling took off again at Belmont Hill.

John McGrath ’74

The “Don” of a New Era The s witnessed an era beyond all expectations. In addition to twice placing in the top three in the New England Prep Championships and seldom being below the top three in the Independent School League, the team won individual championships and team trophies in many public and private school tournaments. Success continued into the s, with the most impressive wins being the New England Championships in  and  as well as a top twenty finish in the National Prep Championship at Lehigh University in . For his dedication to the sport of wrestling and contribution to the New England Independent Wrestling Association, Don Bradley was awarded Coach of the Year for the – season.

What has changed at Belmont Hill over the last thirty years? The hockey, soccer, crew, lacrosse, and for that matter most teams continue to win at an exceptional rate. Levels of academic achievement continue to be impressive as have college admissions. We have some new teachers whose standards and commitment to education continues the tradition of past Belmont Hill teachers, and, significantly, we have a head of school whose involvement in school life is astounding. Perhaps students are somewhat more casual than they were years ago, at least outside of the classroom. What is different, dramatically different, is varsity wrestling. After some years of obscurity — it was about as popular and well known as the current middle school intramural croquet program – the wrestling program’s rebirth began when Don Fowler Bradley was hired. What he did was not coach wrestling and teach history, but coach wrestlers and teach students, and coach students and teach wrestlers. During the last twenty years, as the head coach of the Belmont Hill wrestling team Don Bradley has empowered Belmont Hill’s alumni in the pursuit of their dreams, both in the classroom and on the athletic fields, in a most remarkable way.

Coach Bradley

Since  Bradley has coached the varsity wrestling team. He worked with both the middle school and varsity teams the first few years developing the program and the wrestlers’ attitude toward the sport. He also got faculty member Richard Hoffman — Don’s coach when Don was at the KingswoodOxford Middle School and one of the great gentlemen of the sport — to be his assistant coach. The first few years were challenging, but as the middle schoolers grew so did the program. Last year Coach Bradley was joined by David Leonardis, who was a two-time National Prep Champion and nationally ranked Division I wrestler. Coach Leonardis’ work with the middle school and varsity wrestlers brings a new dimension, with his deep experience at the highest level and his knowledge of Olympic and freestyle wrestling. Since , Belmont Hill’s wrestling team has won five GravesKelsey (Independent League Tournament) championships, seven league championships, and two of the last three New England Prep Championship tournaments. Few wrestlers and few teams look forward to wrestling Belmont Hill. At the New England tournament in  this writer overheard two wrestlers looking at the seeding charts both swear when they found out that they had to wrestle Belmont Hill wrestlers in the first round. One, who was a high seed, exclaimed, “Even when you beat a Belmont kid, he leaves you exhausted. Why can’t I draw some kid from another conference?” With the success of Don Bradley’s program has come a reputation and even higher expectations. It is doubtful that this bothers Bradley because success for him still comes down to the development of character, and the best wins are the wins the individual has over himself.

No longer is a cross-face a teacher’s reaction to a student’s tardiness, a bar-arm something to hold up a drink, Syracuse a city, chicken-wing a food, or a Saturday-night-ride anything to do with dating — they are moves in the complex jargon of wrestling techniques. It is no longer a matter of time: the wrestling program has stood up, has come from the bottom to the top, has reversed the tide, has escaped from obscurity, holds our attention. In fact, people are pinning their hopes on its continued success, and students are falling all over themselves to join. In the – season around forty students tried out for varsity wrestling. Don Bradley has for Belmont Hill School, his students, and his wrestlers made a difference. Not all of his students will earn A’s or go on to Harvard, and not all of his wrestlers will win tournaments or even start on the varsity team. However, each and every one of his students and wrestlers will be better human beings for having had him as his teacher or coach.

Oliver Hurd ’08, Juan Jurado ’08 and George Sullivan ’07

The evolution of wrestling at Belmont Hill has paralleled the evolution of Belmont Hill itself. Once a young, somewhat unsophisticated school for boys that mostly triumphed on the athletic fields, it has become under the last few Heads of School one of the premier boys’ schools in the world, taking a leadership role with programs in global education, multicultural initiatives, foreign exchange programs, and collaborative learning with other boys’ school around the world. Today as we look back on the academic, extra-curricular, and wrestling development, we can simply thank all those wonderful coaches, teachers, and Heads of School such as Donald Bradley, Richard Hoffman, and Richard Melvoin. The 2009–2010 Season Outlook David Leonardis

The varsity wrestling team entered the – season with high expectations for good reasons. Winning two of the past three New England Team Championships is one of them, and with three New England Finalists and four other place winners returning this year, we are focused on another title. Belmont Hill opened the season auspiciously, edging out New Jersey perennial powerhouse St. Benedict’s Prep and New England rival Northfield Mount Hermon to win the team title at the Caruso Invitational in Newark, New Jersey. The team placed thirteen of fourteen wrestlers in the top four and put five wrestlers in the finals, and returning All-American, sophomore Jeff Ott ’, was named Outstanding Wrestler.

H.T. Kotchinian ’10

On December ,  the varsity squad also brought home its sixth consecutive team title at the Doug Parker Memorial Tournament in Connecticut. That same weekend two wrestlers, Jeff Ott ’ and HT Kotchinian ’, traveled to Delaware to compete in the toughest high school tournament in the country, The Beast of the East. Both boys won matches, and Ott made it to the top twelve in a sixty-four-man bracket. While Belmont Hill beat Northfield Mount Hermon in a tournament, they are the only team to defeat the School in a dual meet. It is shaping up to be another thrilling contest for the New England Championship team title, and the Belmont Hill boys also plan on adding their names to the growing list of Prep All-Americans at the Nationals at Lehigh University.
