Client Testimonials I reached out to you during the most stressful time of life for both my loved ones and myself - horror had occurred to my dear loving mother. My mom had fractured her hip and due to her frail health and advanced age required risky hip replacement surgery. Many issues legal and otherwise arose which I could not personally resolve. You not only resolved each and every one, but you continue to do so now, over 4 years later. You always display extreme sincerity, compassion and friendship, using your vast experience and confidence in your ability, to continually bring satisfaction, positive results and a tremendous sense of relief and comfort to my loved ones and myself. You have gone out of your way to visit Mom on multiple occasions in her Nursing house and we love you for it. As an attorney, friend, and a great man, I could not possibly hope to know anyone more phenomenal. The three greatest men I have ever known are my dear departed father, my dear departed father-in-law and Ely Rosenzveig. – Jeff D.

I hired Ely to assist with my parents estate planning and it was a wise decision. He is a true expert in navigating through complex elder care law and procedures. His guidance was invaluable and his communication excellent. I would strongly recommend his services.

Ageless Beauty Your face changes with age, but can still remain beautiful. Let’s face it (no pun intended), we’re all getting older. However, that doesn’t mean we have to give in to what time does with the face and body. There are a few tricks to keep you looking good - and minimize the signs of aging. Just as your face and body change as you age, acquiring wrinkles and age spots, so too must your cosmetics regimen. The products you worshipped in your 20s and 30s may no longer do the trick -- after all, how many things from your 20s still do? Here are some make-up and cosmetic tips from Boomers & Beyond that will make you feel and look great. Define those eyelashes and brows: When it comes to eyelashes and eyebrows, you may find yourself having to do more with less, as both lashes and brows become thinner with age. Brows should be kept well-defined, because with less hair, the stray ones become easier to notice. Then, use a pencil to provide further definition and to fill in the sparse spots. As for your eyelashes, a good volumizing mascara will plump them up and draw attention to the eye. Perhaps you're accustomed to using eye shadow and eyeliner to attract attention to the eye, but the mascara will prove to be a more useful tool as you age. Though all skin gets slack and wrinkled with age, this phenomenon is particularly noticeable on the eyelids because the skin is already so thin. These crepey eyelids make it difficult for older women to wear shimmers or metallics on their eyes -- these products can draw attention to the creases. Similarly, it's best to find an alternative to liquid eyeliner, which also has a tendency to run into eye wrinkles. Get rid of those circles under your eyes: During the aging process, the already-thin skin below your eyes becomes even thinner, showing the blood vessels below and giving you under-eye circles. The answer isn't just caking on concealer; too much makeup in this area will look lumped on. Instead, use a light foundation -- lighter than the shade on the rest of your face -- or a on the dark areas under your eyes. Use powder to blend it in and set it. Aging causes water retention in the area under eyes, much like a lack of sleep and allergies did in younger days. To avoid highlighting those dark circles with puffy eyes, get plenty of sleep and invest in a tightening eye cream for nights. Ease up on the foundation: If you're self-conscious about fine lines and wrinkles on your face, you may be tempted to pile on the foundation. Don’t do it! This has the unfortunate effect of highlighting those very features. All that excess makeup builds up in the creases, drawing the eye right to the spot you want to conceal.

To avoid the equivalent of drawing an arrow right to your wrinkles, adopt a "less is more" approach. Moisturizer is always a must because it evens out your skin, but then, it's time to evaluate the light and dark spots on your face. Rather than just applying foundation to the entire face, use concealer first to get rid of shadows and harsh lines and to hide brown spots. Then, you can set the look with translucent powder all over. Lighten up those lips: Some professionals think that a lip liner should always be applied before lipstick, so as to give the lip a little more definition. Others find lip liner unnecessary, arguing that such a product will only create a very harsh line that will do your thinning lips no favors. Regardless of whether you decide lip liner is essential or not, you should reevaluate the kinds of products you're putting on your lips. Lip glosses will have a tendency to slip around now that lips are thinner, and even if you've loved dark shades all your life, it may be time to lighten up. Those darker palettes will only look harsher as you age; going just a few shades lighter will make a huge difference.

Quitting Smoking: For seniors, it’s never too late

If you are like most smokers 50 and older, you probably have tried to quit before. You might think that you will quit someday, or maybe you think that it is too late for you to quit. But it’s never too late to quit. Quitting has benefits at all ages. If you have health problems, then many of your symptoms, your quality of life, and your future health will start improving almost immediately if you quit now. If you’ve been diagnosed with a significant health problem, quitting smoking makes it more likely the treatment will be successful and that you’ll have fewer side effects. Challenges for Older Adults There are a few reasons why it can be difficult for an older person to quit. You may have tried to quit more than once before, but were not successful. If you weren’t able to quit before, you already know how hard it can be. You may feel too discouraged to try again. Also, for someone who has been smoking a long time, smoking has become so much a part of everyday life that it is hard to let it go. It may feel like you’re saying goodbye to a friend. Another reason is that nicotine, the main drug in cigarettes, is very addictive, and this makes it very

hard for a smoker to quit. One of the biggest challenges that most smokers face for the first couple of weeks after they quit smoking is getting through the withdrawal symptoms. Reasons Older Smokers Have Quit Many former smokers who are 50 and older say that their main reason for quitting was for their health or due to their doctor’s advice. Another common reason smokers quit is to be in control of their lives and to be free from cigarettes. A lot of former smokers also said that pleasing or helping a loved one was a big part of their decision to quit. These all are good reasons. The most important reasons for quitting are the ones you decide on for yourself. Life Experience May Help Older adults have strengths that can help them quit. Over their lifetimes, they have had lots of experience accomplishing difficult tasks. At this point in their lives, they are likely to be better prepared to take on the challenge of quitting smoking than when they were younger. They know quitting is tough, and they know it won’t be easy, so once they decide to try again, they may be more willing to work at it to make sure they succeed.

Great apps for tech-savvy seniors, a fast-growing set There is a common misconception that the senior set are not actively using email or are less likely to use technology to communicate. At least, until your grandmother shows you her new smart phone and, next thing you know, you are planning a FaceTime chat with her. The reality is that seniors are tapping into technology more than ever. According to the Pew Internet and American Life Project, 87 percent of senior citizens use email and search engines, while the Nielsen Company found that checking email was the primary online activity for 88.6 percent of seniors. Social networks are also acquiring more senior users with each passing year. The Pew study demonstrates that internet users aged 74+ have experienced the fastest growth in use of social networking sites, which has quadrupled since 2008. If you are a tech-savvy senior, you know about apps for your phone, ipad, laptop and desktop computer. Here are some helpful apps for seniors.

The Weather Channel (free) Get the weather report for whichever city you need right now, or every hour, or see what it’s going to look like over the weekend, or over the next 10 days. Yesterday USA (free) Great Internet radio app that broadcasts “old-time radio shows” all day, every day. Take it back to yesteryear with the help of today’s technology. Lumosity (free) Keep your mind sharp with some of the best mind games around, designed by neuroscientists working to enhance memory, attention and other skills.

FlipBoard (free) Connect this app with all of your social media accounts, and connect it with some of the best news and content sites that interest you. Then watch it turn everything into a digital magazine, in which you “flip” the pages and see everything set up like a magazine, including Facebook posts and tweets. Skype (free) What’s better than just talking with your friends and family over the phone? How about talking to them – and seeing them — on a video conference. You will never be surprised by how much your grandchildren have changed again.

WebMD (free) Use WebMD’s Symptom Checker to help what your potential issues might be, and this app can also work as a handy guide for medical emergencies.

EyeReader ($1.99) Hold your iPhone over a book or some paperwork, and your phone turns into a magnifying glass, with a light to help brighten the text.

Park ‘n’ Forget ($ 0.99) Never forget where you parked your car again! Input what floor you’re on and what aisle or spot, and you’ll never roam the parking garage again. It also has a convenient “Parking Meter” timer, that alerts you when you’re parking meter is about to expire.

HeartWise Blood Pressure Tracker ($ 0.99 to $2.99) Easily record your blood pressure, your resting heart rate and your weight, and you’ll be able to track it on a daily basis and over time.

Healthy Aging At Home

Over the years I have had the distinct pleasure of having worked the many spectrums of Health Care with our “Seasoned Seniors.” I enjoyed both engaging and watching them interact with others in Independent and Assisted Living communities.

These communities have beautiful apartments, are full of activities and have some of the best chefs around; I know because I am still working on going from “fluffy to flat” after having the pleasure for several years. While the communities are beautiful, they may

The vaccines you need at age 50 and older Vaccines are not just for kids. Even adults age 50 and older need to get vaccinated against certain diseases. Always discuss any risk factors or concerns you may have with your physician before getting a vaccine. Here are some guidelines we use for vaccinations, as provided by the CDC (www.cdc.gov): Annual Flu Vaccine: Unless you have had a severe reaction from the flu shot in the past or are allergic to eggs, you should be vaccinated yearly. If you are 50 or older, we don’t recommend the nasal spray vaccine because it hasn’t proven to be especially effective. Pneumonia Vaccine: Even seniors who are diligent about getting their annual flu shot sometimes forget to get a one-time pneumonia vaccine. Both should be part of the preventive health care plan for adults 65 and older and people 50 and older with certain risk factors.

not be affordable to everyone and what if you just prefer to stay at home? The American Association of Retired persons (AARP) revealed that 90 percent of seniors prefer and perform better in their homes and local communities. There really is no place like home. For today’s savy senior who may just need minimal assistance, the idea of a stranger in their home may not be palatable. Many seniors experience fear and trepidation for several reasons, one of which is a loss of their independence. No one wants to feel helpless and trade in their independence for dependency on anyone, let alone a stranger coming into their home. This is a discussion that the family caregiver, who may already be experiencing “burnout” can have with their

loved one, bringing proper information that allows the senior an opportunity to maintain their independence by having an active and hands on approach to their own care that can include someone to engage them in their favorite activity or discussion. Visiting Development Care Group LLC was designed with you and your loved one in mind. We are a family of Professionals who have been on the other side of the industry having cared for our loved ones in the home with various diagnosis to include Alzheimer’s/Dementia. Our qualified Companions and Homemakers take the sting out of awkward introductions. Suitably matched with similar interests to provide in home activities that will engage the senior and make them feel as though they

are spending time with a helpful friend, our services makes the most apprehensive senior smile. An array of Referral services are available to include the wander guard for seniors at risk for wandering, a certified fitness instructor who specializes in exercises for seniors to improve strength and mobility, and a dentist who services clients in the privacy of their own home, we are your source for much needed information for your seniors. Think of it as Adult Nanny Care, a partnership with exceptional love and care. Take a little time to gather information, present it and allow the senior to be a part of the process for their care at home. A stress free discussion that leads to a companion who can play Scrabble can truly lead to the success of Healthy Aging.

Resilient midlife adults make more social connections One of the most common questions we receive from our clients today is “How can I leave something to my heirs without completely exhausting my life insurance policy?” “I want to be able to leave something for my grandchildren’s future or family members.” These questions demonstrate a family member sincerity of leaving a small legacy for the next generation. The patriarchs of these families have the foresight to help the next generation move ahead financially.

Battling stress can be overwhelming and, but you can beat it by, among other things, being resilient. The most resilient adults in their 40s, 50s and 60s are more likely to cope with stress by being physically active and having strong social connections, compared with those less resilient. The Hartford Center for Mature Market Excellence and the MIT Age-Lab Resilience in Midlife study looked at life transitions that people in their 40s, 50s and 60s experience and how they remain resilient. “Resilience is particularly essential in midlife, when we may be adapting to major life changes,” said Jodi Olshevski, gerontologist and executive director of The Hartford Center for Mature Market Excellence. “We found the most resilient adults have a strong sense of self-efficacy or the belief that they are able to manage through difficult transitions.” The study explored the concept of resilience, the capacity to positively adjust to difficult life experiences, and was comprised of focus groups, and a survey of adults ages 40 – 69. Participating in entertainment activities and hobbies is the most common way that all adults in the study cope with stress. However, the most resilient adults are more

likely to participate in physical activity than less resilient adults (70 percent versus 42 percent). Social connections and support are also common among the most resilient people. Sixty percent of the most resilient adults talk to or spend time with friends as a way to cope with stress, compared with 35 percent of the less resilient individuals. Ninety-four percent of the most resilient people reported that they are very or somewhat happy, compared with only 32 percent of the less resilient people in the survey. Thirty-four percent of the most resilient people reported that they are not stressed at all, compared with six percent of the less resilient people in the survey. The most common types of stress that people in midlife are currently experiencing are related to finances and expenses (53 percent), health of yourself or others (40 percent), and changes related to aging (34 percent). Overall, people in their 60s reported higher levels of resilience, compared with people in their 40s and 50s. Building resilience over a lifetime is important,” said Olshevski. “Carving out time to take care of yourself by being physically active and socially connected in the midst of life transitions is an important part of building resilience over a lifetime.”

At B & M Capital, Inc., we have incorporated a new loan program for Senior’s that lets them borrow against their life insurance policy. This new program is called “Advanced Benefit Loan”. An Advanced Benefit Loan enables a senior to borrow money against their life insurance policy without the personal obligation to repay the loan. How is this possible? The loan is repaid using your policy’s death benefit proceeds and the remainder of the death benefit going to your beneficiaries. The benefits of this type of loan: 1. You will not be obligated to make a loan payment or incur any out-of-pocket expenses. 2. You will not be required to pay insurance premiums. 3. You do not have to give up ownership of your policy or pledge additional collateral. 4. You do not have to pay income taxes on the loan amount. By taking an Advanced Benefit Loan, you will have the money you need, to spend on whatever you want, without restrictions. You can use these funds to: 1. Pay your living expenses 2. Pay your medical bills 3. Improve your medical care 4. Give gifts to loved ones and charities 5. Make use of your money today This loan program is designed to assist Senior’s in accessing cash from their existing life insurance policy with no income requirements, no future premium obligations, and no out-ofpocket expenses. In order to qualify, a Senior must have in-force a life insurance policy. A Senior will never be rejected due to lack of income, poor credit history, or previous bankruptcy. If you would to apply or have questions, call us today, we can speak with you to access your financial need, review your life insurance policy and determine your eligibility. If you are eligible, you will be asked to complete a loan application and provide requested documentation. Once we complete our review of your policy, we will notify you of approval and the amount of the loan.

Reduce your risk factors for Osteoarthritis with Physical Therapy The cause of osteoarthritis is unknown. Factors that may increase your risk for OA include: • Age. The older you are more likely OA can affect you. With time and age joints get worn increasing your risk for developing OA • Occupation. Jobs that require prolonged kneeling and repetitive squatting, bending, and twisting are risk factors for OA. • Other diseases. Having diabetes, underactive thyroid, or gout can increase your risk of developing OA. • Past Injury. Residual damage and/or sub-optimal recovery from a past injury can affect a joint, pre-disposing and increasing the risk of developing OA. • Sports. Athletics requires extreme and repetitive joint movements, which over time affects the joint and increases risk for OA later in life. • Obesity. Being overweight causes increased stress to the weight-bearing joints (such as knees and hips), increasing the risk for development of OA. • Genetics. Research indicates that some individuals have poor cartilage formation, which can be passed down genetically.

OA affects daily activity and is the most common cause of disability in the U.S. adult population. To minimize its effects, proper and correct management is key. Depending on how severe the OA is, physical therapy may help you avoid surgery, reduce pain, and gain back your mobility. Because the symptoms and progression of OA are different for each person, starting an individualized exercise program and addressing specific risk factors can help relieve your symptoms and slow the condition's advancement.

Don’t let Osteoarthritis keep you from doing what you love. Reduce your risk factors and consult a physical therapist today! Written by Dr. Delali Goka, PT, DPT, co-founder of A Healthier You Physical Therapy, LLP (AHYPT) -a personalized home physical therapy and wellness company. Ever wonder what is causing that snap, crackle, and pop when you move? Or perhaps the ache and stiffness you feel in your joints when you wake up and the weatherman says it’s going to rain? Chances are it’s good ‘ole arthritis. Osteoarthritis (OA) to be exact. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1 in 2 people in the United States may develop knee OA by age 85, and 1 in 4 may develop hip OA in their lifetime. Until age 50, men and women are equally affected by OA; after age 50, women are affected more than men. Arthritis generally refers to inflammation in the joints. Cartilage and a protective substance called synovial fluid coats your joints and helps reduce friction when you move. When these protective coverings break down, the bones begin to rub together during movement causing inflammation, pain, and, further deterioration to the remaining cartilage and bones.

The theatrical debut of the Talented Wartburg Puppeteers

At Wartburg’s New Adult Care Center Earlier this summer, the eight Talented Wartburg Puppeteers, a group of sixty-to-eighty year old registrants at the Adult Day Care Center at Wartburg, a senior services provider based in Westchester, NY, put on the performance of their lives. The seniors regaled their fellow day care registrants, assisted living residents, staff, and family members, with a lively 15-minute, multimedia puppet performance piece called “We Are Family.” During the show, the puppeteers performed with physical gestures, dialogue, and songs using rod puppets they designed and built themselves, interacting with a changing backdrop of animated scenes shown on a large projection screen, such as fish in a stream or the sun coming up. “There was such pride of accomplishment and such acclaim from their peers. It was incredibly uplifting for them and for me,” said professional theatre artist and puppeteer, Josh Rice, a recent MFA graduate from Sarah Lawrence College, and the creative spark behind the program. Mr. Rice met weekly with the eight registrants over seven months, helping them to craft their own self-designed, self-built puppets and to name them (Silvermist, Lily, and Albert, for example). During the weekly sessions, the elderly puppeteers honed their improvisational skills to always be “in the moment” and practiced the art of puppetry with its rhythmic swoops, nods and bobs. The puppet class is part of a nationally recognized program at Wartburg called Creative Aging, which 500 seniors participate in at the assisted living, memory care, nursing homes and adult day care programs where they express themselves through art, song, theater, poetry and oral histories. “The goal of Creative Aging is to promote greater emotional health, social engagement and life-

long learning for older adults, and the new puppet program exemplifies this goal,” said David Gentner, president and CEO of Wartburg. Josh Rice had been a professional puppeteer, playwright, director, designer and choreographer based in New York City before he went back to graduate school in 2012. “I’ve always been passionate about puppetry, but realized one day that ‘art for arts sake’ was not enough. I became interested in theater for social change at Sarah Lawrence College.” When he learned about the Creative Aging program at Wartburg, it was a perfect fit for his new artistic direction and he offered to form the puppeteering class. Janet Petro, a 73 year old Wartburg puppeteer, created her fairy puppet, Silvermist, with wings. She is “crazy about the puppet,” who has a high pitched voice and is a “free spirit who will do anything for a laugh.” Mary Jackson, another elderly puppeteer, named her chalkwhite faced, black eye browed, puppet with an unruly shock of white hair, Albert. “He’s not the most attractive, but every once in a while he combs his hair,” she said. The puppeteers use these everevolving puppet personalities to act out improvised scenes in their

weekly classes and hone them for performance for an audience of their peers. Before they started the program in November 2013,

none of the Talented Wartburg Puppeteers had used puppets or performed before. The program has been such a success that next year the number of Talented Wartburg Puppeteers will expand, with programs held in Wartburg’s Memory Care Unit and Nursing Home. “At first I wasn’t sure how the registrants would react to working with puppets, but after I saw that there was such joy in the class and laughter that after each session the classes grew each week,” said Ann Frey, director of volunteers at Wartburg. The capstone of this year’s accomplishments for the puppeteers may be their appearance on a segment on PBS’ Visionaries, a documentary program hosted by Sam Waterston.

Wartburg Wartburg is an award-winning provider of comprehensive senior services, including independent living, assisted living, Alzheimer’s/dementia care, skilled nursing, rehabilitation and hospice care. Bethel’s Springvale Inn – Living the Good Life! Assisted Living at Bethel’s Springvale Inn in Croton-on-Hudson is a dream come true for seniors who want to spend 100% of their time enjoying the privileges of being a senior and zero percent of their time worrying about yard work, fuel bills, shoveling snow and other nuisance, homeowner tasks. It’s all about peace of mind - and living in a community where the biggest calamity is choosing which entrée to have for dinner each night is a clear indicator that life certainly is good at The Springvale Inn! It is the perfect place for seniors who want to “chillax!” A heated indoor pool, wood paneled library, amazing dining experiences, parties, trips to the theater, shopping excursions and a family-oriented staff are just a few of the benefits enjoyed by residents of the Inn. It is one of the most affordable, notfor-profit Assisted Senior Living Residences in Westchester County where residents can receive a little help along the way. Whether it’s a reminder to take medication or help with bathing, the Inn’s clinical staff is available 24/7 to assist. The staff plays a key role in creating the welcoming and relaxed ambiance at The Inn. They recognize that it is the residents’ home and do everything possible to ensure the seniors are happy in their day to day experiences.

One employee, in particular, Charlie Waryha, a Maintenance Mechanic, was the recent recipient of the prestigious Employee of Distinction Award from Leading Age New York, an organization which represents 600 not-for-profit, mission-driven and public continuing care providers, including nursing homes, senior housing, adult care facilities, continuing care retirement communities, assisted living and community service providers throughout New York. Jim Clyne, the President/CEO of Leading Age New York and Assemblywoman Sandra Galef, both recognized Charlie’s efforts recently during a presentation ceremony at Bethel’s Springvale Inn. Charlie received accolades for the enthusiasm and diligence with which he undertakes his role. Not only is he responsible for maintaining and renovating the 125-apartment senior complex, he is often called to help at Bethel’s other senior facilities and campus. However, the Springvale Inn residents see Charlie as their own… he is the friend that stops by to reset a clock or to admire a photo of their latest grandchild. Just recently he was rushing off to take care of a building repair when one of the residents intercepted him and asked Charlie to follow him to his apartment. The resident was very insistent. Thinking something needed to be fixed immediately,

Charlie went with him. When they got to the apartment, it turned out the resident just wanted him to try out his new, vibrating chair! Also, every Easter Sunday, Charlie leaves his home and family for a few hours and drives to Bethel. The 6 ft., former Army serviceman, dons a bunny suit (that he put together), fills a basket with candy and visits the residents at each of Bethel’s facilities. Says Bethel’s CEO, Ms. Beth Goldstein, “Charlie is more than an employee at Bethel. He puts his heart and soul into everything he

ATTORNEYS AT LAW Many Years of Experience Protecting the Legal Interests of the Elderly & Special Needs Populations

Why should I spend money hiring attorneys to do asset protection planning for me and my loved ones? Currently, the monthly cost for nursing home care in New York ranges between $10,000-$15,000, and properly certified home health attendants (nurse aides) can cost as much or more for round- the-clock home care. Statistically, it is likely that most people will need either or both of these care options as they grow older. It is critical that you plan appropriately to best minimize the strain that elder care costs may have on your estate, and to help put you in the best position possible to qualify for benefits that are largely covered by the government, under Medicare or Medicaid. Our firm has attorneys with extensive experience in developing tax-effective action plans for our clients that help protect their assets from government imposition. We have also been very successful in negotiating the complex bureaucratic minefield in which Medicaid is now mired. We have achieved remarkable results for our clients on a host of Medicaid related issues, from obtaining Medicaid approvals for coverage of home care and institutional care benefits, to very accommodative resolutions of Medicaid spousal recovery claims, where the office of Medicaid aggressively pursues the non-institutionalized (i.e., or “community”) spouse for Medicaid benefits provided.

Why should I have a lawyer prepare my will? If you die without a Will, the law, not you, determines how your assets are divided and to whom they are given. A poorly drafted Will may result in a sizeable chunk of your assets not ending up where you want them to go. We are an experienced law firm that can expertly craft your will to address your long-term care, tax, estate planning, and asset protection planning issues. It is in your best interest that planning be done properly so as to minimize the tax burden on your estate. Our experience and skill in the fields of Trusts, Wills, and Estates enables our firm to uniquely tailor estate planning to your individual needs. We will review your entire estate and draft a personalized plan that will best direct the disposition of your assets after death, whether through your Will, or by means of testamentary substitutes (trusts, joint-asset ownership with right of survivorship, or by beneficiary designation in life insurance policies, annuities, or individual retirement accounts).

My father is having difficulty caring for himself. I am afraid he will no longer be able to live on his own. I am worried about finding the money to pay for his care, whether he stays at home or moves to an assisted living facility or nursing home. What do I do? Your concerns are certainly daunting, and heart-rending. Our firm offers you a caring hand, an open ear, and uncompromising professional competence, and commitment. We will help find for you solutions that best suit your needs, using the latest tax, trust, and other asset protection strategies available under the law.

Wartburg’s Director of Nursing honored by her peers at National Conference Wartburg’s Director of Nursing (DON), Paulette Watson, RN, MS, was recently honored at the 2014 National Association of Directors of Nursing Administration in Long Term Care (NADONA) conference this past June in Anaheim, CA for her more than decade-long commitment to serving those entrusted to Wartburg’s care. NADONA is the premier professional nurses association dedicated exclusively to Nurse Executives/ Nurse Administrators in Long Term Care. As a testament to Ms. Watson’s dedication to her field, she was chosen by her peers to receive this distinction. “I was truly honored to know that the NADONA, along with my colleagues, recognized and acknowledged my commitment to those we serve. I feel very privileged to work at such a renowned and respected organization.

When I began my tenure at Wartburg ten years ago, I was intrigued by the rich history and the mission of nurturing mind, body and spirit. I quickly learned that what we did mattered; it mattered most to the seniors we care for but also to the success of our organization. I strongly believe that every professional, if given the opportunity, would like to work at the best organization in their field and Wartburg is known as one of the premier leaders in Long Term Care, “said Ms. Watson, of her honorific award. “In the world of post-acute nursing, Ms. Watson is a pillar in this community. It does not surprise me that her peers would recognize her in such a way. We are so proud of her leadership and the work of the entire nursing department,” said David Gentner, President & CEO, Wartburg.

The conference focuses on the current long term care trends and the necessary tools the Nursing Administrators need for professional success. During the five day conference Paulette, along with other Directors of Nursing throughout the country, received the esteemed award for being a DON in the same organization for over 10 years. Your Eyes

change as you get older, and unfortunately, it is often for the worse. However, older adults don’t have to allow their changing vision to affect their lifestyles. Knowing what to expect from your eyes as you age, how to manage any issues that arise and when to seek help from a professional are all important steps in preserving your vision and maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle.

Know Your Family Health History Talk to your family about their eye health history. It's important to know if anyone has been diagnosed with a disease or condition since many are inherited. This will help you determine if you are at higher risk for developing an eye disease or condition. Know Your Risk Factors As you get older, you are at higher risk of developing age-related eye diseases and conditions. These include age-related macular degeneration, cataract, diabetic eye disease, and glaucoma. Knowing your risk factors is important because you may be able to lower your risk by changing some behaviors. Give Your Eyes a Rest If you spend a lot of time at the computer or focusing on any one thing, you can forget to blink your eyes and your eyes can get tired. Try the 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, look away about 20 feet in front of you for 20 seconds. This can help reduce eyestrain. Wear Protective Eye Wear Wear protective eyewear such as goggles and safety glasses, shields, and eye guards when playing sports or doing activities around the house. Most protective eyewear lenses are made of polycarbonate, which is 10 times stronger than other plastics.

Maintain a Healthy Weight Being overweight or obese increases your risk of developing diabetes. This increases your risk of developing diabetic retinopathy or glaucoma, which can eventually lead to vision loss. Eat a Healthy Diet A diet rich in fruits and vegetables, particularly dark leafy vegetables such as spinach, kale, or collard greens can help to keep your eyes healthy and disease free. There are eye health benefits from eating fish high in omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon, tuna, and halibut. Wear Sunglasses The best sunglasses are those that block out 99 to 100 percent of both UV-A and UV-B radiation. Sun exposure is associated with developing cataract and agerelated macular degeneration Avoid Smoking Smoking increases the risk of developing age-related eye diseases such as macular degeneration and cataract, and can damage the optic nerve. Keep Your Hands and Contact Lenses Clean Wash your hands thoroughly before putting in or taking out your contact lenses. Make sure to disinfect them as instructed and replace them as appropriate.

U.S. News & World Report ranks Hudson Valley Hospital Center among best in geriatric care Hudson Valley Hospital Center has been recognized by U.S. News & World Report as among the top hospitals in the care of older adults. According to the magazine’s recently released annual report on the nation’s best hospitals, Hudson Valley Hospital Center received a regional ranking in geriatric care. Death rates, patient safety and hospital reputation were a few of the many factors considered. HVHC’s status as a Magnet Hospital for nursing excellence also weighed in the decision. Only 144 hospitals were nationally ranked in a specialty. The U.S. News & World Report ranking follows the Hospital’s being chosen as only one of four hospitals in New York State to be rated a top notch geriatric “NICHE” hospital by the prestigious NYU College of Nursing. In March, Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders (NICHE) released a list of nine hospitals that achieved Exemplar status for the progress of their nurse-driven programs in raising the level of quality in care of older adult patients. HVHC was the only hospital in the region to receive this honor. Exemplar is the highest of four levels of recognition. The 2014-15 U.S. News & World Report rankings cover nearly 5,000 medical centers across the country and span 16 medical specialties from cancer to urology. Just 12 percent of the nearly 5,000 hospitals that were analyzed for best hospitals in 2014-2015 earned a regional ranking.
