Client Testimonials I reached out to you during the most stressful time of life for both my loved ones and myself - horror had occurred to my dear loving mother. My mom had fractured her hip and due to her frail health and advanced age required risky hip replacement surgery. Many issues legal and otherwise arose which I could not personally resolve. You not only resolved each and every one, but you continue to do so now, over 4 years later. You always display extreme sincerity, compassion and friendship, using your vast experience and confidence in your ability, to continually bring satisfaction, positive results and a tremendous sense of relief and comfort to my loved ones and myself. You have gone out of your way to visit Mom on multiple occasions in her Nursing house and we love you for it. As an attorney, friend, and a great man, I could not possibly hope to know anyone more phenomenal. The three greatest men I have ever known are my dear departed father, my dear departed father-in-law and Ely Rosenzveig. – Jeff D.

I hired Ely to assist with my parents estate planning and it was a wise decision. He is a true expert in navigating through complex elder care law and procedures. His guidance was invaluable and his communication excellent. I would strongly recommend his services.

WESTCHESTER TO MARK NATIONAL SENIOR HEALTH & FITNESS DAY “ If You Keep Moving‌You’ll Keep Improving!â€? is this year’s theme Westchester seniors will be able to try low-impact exercises and cardiodancing and learn about good nutrition plus much more at the 22nd annual National Senior Health and Fitness Day on Wednesday, May 27 at locations throughout the county. National Senior Health and Fitness Day is a public/private good health partnership organized by the Mature Market Resource Center, a national clearinghouse for professionals who work in older adult markets. It is organized locally by Westchester County’s Department of Senior Programs and Services (DSPS) and its Health and Wellness Collaborative, which is comprised of 15 community organizations. National Senior Health and Fitness Day always takes place the last Wednesday in May, which is Older Americans Month. The programs are free and open to county residents who are 60 years and older. This year’s theme is “If You Keep Moving‌You’ll Keep Improving!.â€? All the activities are noncompetitive and may include walking events, health screenings and information workshops on fitness. Last year Senior Health and Wellness Day programs took place at 13 locations in Westchester including community centers, nutrition sites and adult day-care programs. In previous years, activities included tap, belly and Zumba dancing, bocce, tennis and Health Tips Bingo. The day also included talks on topics such as “Love in the Skin Your Inâ€? and “Nutrition for Brain Health.â€? There was a special session last year for Spanish-speaking seniors on health related topics and included exercise sessions for all participants. The Mature Market Resource Center says that an estimated 100,000 seniors take part in activities at more than 1,000 locations across the country. Its goals are to promote the importance of regular physical activity and to showcase what local organizations and agencies are doing to improve the health and fitness of older adults in their communities. DSPS Commissioner Mae Carpenter says that exercise is essential if seniors want to be healthy and independent for as long as possible. “Seniors get the opportunity to try some appropriate and enjoyable forms of exercise at Senior Health and Fitness Day,â€? she said. “Exercise helps people to feel well and can also prevent falls and lessen conditions such as depression. I encourage all seniors to take part.â€? The locations that will host sessions and what activities they will sponsor will be announced in the near future. For more information about the event, call DSPS at (914) 813-6300. Facilities willing to host programs should call (914) 813-6432

Happy Mother’s Day to all of the mother’s out there. Is there any holiday more universally accepted across different cultures than Mother's Day? More than 40 countries worldwide have designated a day, usually in spring, to thank mom for all of her love, hard work and patience. While mothers get most of the press, grandmothers and great-grandmothers, aunts and a variety of mother figures and mentors share equally in the celebration, as they should. They do not ask for anything in return for their limitless love and admiration for their children. All they want is happiness for their children and loved ones. However, we should let our moms know they are appreciated and truly loved. Their hard work should never be overlooked. Let's take this opportunity to get together and wish every mother on this planet and show how important they are in our lives. Boomers and Beyond would like to take this opportunity to wish all of our Boomers and Beyond readers. Mother’s Day is May 10 this year, but we celebrate you every day, that’s for sure. We hope you all enjoy a great day with your family. Happy Mother’s Day from all us at Boomers & Beyond! Get in touch at info@healthcarenewspaper.com.

Keep Moving with Arthritis! Whether it's the arthritic hip stiffness you feel rising from bed each morning and taking your first steps of the day or perhaps the knee ache experienced when climbing stairsit is important you keep moving. The pain of osteoarthritisthe most common type of arthritis, is caused by the deterioration of the joint through chronic inflammation and bone on bone rubbing due to inadequate lubricating joint fluid and cartilage. With pain present it is natural instinct to avoid movement and keep still. The thought of exercise for many individuals with arthritis is often unthinkable, with the popular belief that movement will aggravate the pain. However, truth be told, the lack of movement can make your arthritic joint stiffer and more painful. Not moving can cause stiffness, inflexibility, and muscle weakness, which all can make matters worse and ultimately cause disability. Avoiding movement and not exercising weakens surrounding muscles and tissues- in turn causing more stress to the joint and your bones. When it comes to arthritis, movement and exercise can help reduce pain, increase your mobility, and improve your joint stability. You may be thinking right about now, how you could actually keep moving with your arthritis pain? To tolerate everyday physical activity and make exercise with arthritis less challenging, it is vital to prepare your body.

Tips to reduce arthritic pain during exercise and keep moving include: • Stretch daily to minimize stiffness • Perform warm ups and cool downs with every work out • Take your preferred pain medication 20-30 minutes prior to exercising • Use a heating pad before working out and ice afterward • Keep a healthy weight to decrease the load on your joints • Incorporate exercises that reduce weight on your joints to your work out regimen. For example swimming/water aerobics, recumbent bike, and elliptical machine. For more specific recommendations, consult with a physical therapist. As mobility experts, physical therapists can advise you on safe exercises and how to modify your exercise routine to manage your arthritis and keep you moving. For more information about keeping moving with arthritis please call 914 458 2249 or email info@ahy4life.com. Written by Dr. Delali A. What to buy Boomers (and Beyond) for Mother’s Day Capture multiple generations in one photograph Think of the look on your mother’s face when you present her with a unique photograph that captures a few generations back: great-grandparent holding a photo of a grandparent holding a photo of a parent (your mom) holding a photo of you (the child). Work in the garden Plant flowers or a tree, help your mother tend her garden, or put together some flower baskets to hang outside. If your mother lives in a care facility, bring some flowers to arrange together, and give some to other moms who are residents. Your mom might also enjoy a visit to a nearby horticultural garden. Cue the tears of joy and appreciation. Many variations can be created to include grandchildren, the mother or father’s side of the family, and even just the generations of women or men only. Your mother will be touched by the gesture.

About 35 million baby boomers are mothers. What kind of gifts do baby boomers like to receive on Mother’s Day? Well, you have come to the right place. Check out our list of Mother’s Day gifts for baby boomers and the senior set. Make memories with a scrapbook You do not have to be a master scrapbook artist to create a memory book that your mother will love. Purchase scrapbooking materials or use a website such as Shutterfly to make your book. Also consider taking the materials to your mother’s home so you can make the scrapbook together. Go to Brunch Mother’s Day brunches are highly popular and, unfortunately, often crowded. If you can’t reserve a spot at a local restaurant, go out for a late lunch or an early dinner. Some families might reserve brunch for a different weekend and make their mother’s favorite meal at home instead. She will likely love either venue and, of course, the love and company. Get creative with old photos Be an artist and think out of the box. Take a picture of your mother that shows past and present side by side. Or you can make or purchase a unique frame in which you display a photo that is especially important to your mom. Spend time together and make memories The possibilities are unlimited. Take your mother out for a meal, a movie or another one of her favorite outings. Or, think of an activity you can do together at home. The time you spend will be memorable and will give you more to visit mom in the future. Cook together Ask mom to teach you how to cook that special dinner she always made just for you, or maybe one of her famous desserts. Keep it simple and fun, and shop for the ingredients ahead of time. Grandchildren can help with prep work and age-appropriate tasks as well.

Happy Spring From Kathy Herrmann Executive Director

Welcome spring‌ it has been a long cold winter. But living at Drum Hill our residents were able to shop at our store, eat dinner with friends and even have their hair and nails done without even getting out in the cold! We have celebrated all the holidays from our Christmas buffet to our St. Patrick’s Day party! Now it is time to get outside and smell the flowers and look at the blooming trees by the river. This is the time at Drum Hill where we start to warm up and get ready to sit in our garden and picnic.

Bethel Residents Hit the Road in Style! Road Trip! Short or long, everyone enjoys a change of scenery, even if it’s just a trip to the store. As children, our parents packed up the car and took us on fun vacations. As young adults, we felt the freedom of the road when we got our driver’s licenses. As “responsible” adults we drove to work, ran errands and took our own children on fun trips. One way or another, driving or being driven somewhere gives us access to the community and world around us. It is an integral part of our lives and society. At Bethel Homes and Services, we understand how important it is for our residents to still have that freedom of the road feeling and the opportunity to stay connected with the communities and people around them. To this end, Bethel recently acquired two new 24-passenger

buses via the NYS Department of Transportation Section 5310 Grant Program. This program offers grant funding opportunities specifically to provide transportation for seniors and people with disabilities. The addition of these two buses to Bethel’s existing transportation vehicles makes it possible for more of Bethel’s over 400 seniors to participate in trips to the theater, apple-picking, the mall, restaurants, grocery shopping and so much more. Such outings are available to residents in our Adult Day program, those living at The Pines- Bethel’s Independent Senior Living apartments, as well as those living at the Springvale Inn- Bethel’s Assisted Living residence, and, of course, our skilled nursing and rehabilitation center residents.

Trips are planned with residents’ input since, as the saying goes, “half the fun is getting there!” and who doesn’t love to plan a trip and then look forward to it? The anticipation, structure and social interaction of such outings is important in the day to day routines of our residents. Remaining a part of the community and continuing with the experiences enjoyed there should continue, as these familiar activities also bring a sense of purpose and comfort. In addition, since Bethel also provides some transportation to its Adult Day program, Outpatient Therapy and Medical appointments, having these two new buses will result in more flexibility when scheduling appointments. Each bus can accommodate four wheelchairs (total of eight) which again increases the number of people who can

participate in recreational outings as well as be taken to medical appointments. “We are delighted to add these two new buses to our transportation schedule,” says Beth Goldstein, Bethel’s CEO. “Seeing our residents board the buses, laughing and happy, as they take off to go shopping or to the restaurant, is just wonderful. Knowing that they are happy makes our day,” she said. Bethel Homes and Services is the only not-for-profit healthcare organization in Northern Westchester County which provides a full continuum of care in Crotonon-Hudson and Ossining. These services include: Home Care; Adult Day Services; Independent Senior Living Apartments; an Assisted Senior Living Residence; two Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Centers; Respite and Hospice Care.

Burke’s May Lobby Lecture focuses on Baby Boomers in Hospitals At 4:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 6, the Burke Centennial Lobby Lecture Series will feature "Moving, Remoting and Booming: Looking at the effects of ambulatory care, telemedicine and aging baby boomers on hospitals" as told by Holly Brenneise, AIA, LEED AP, a senior associate at Perkins Eastman architecture and design firm in Stamford, CT. The talk will look at the national real estate for hospitals of all sizes, including the age of these hospitals, size and infrastructure; ambulatory care and its move out of hospitals and into communities; and what telemedicine is and where it's happening. The goal of these broad topics is to get us thinking about what, in time, will happen to the large hospital campuses across the country as these major healthcare moves take shape. About Burke Rehabilitation Hospital Burke Rehabilitation Hospital is a private, not-for-profit, acute rehabilitation hospital. Founded in 1915, it is the only hospital in Westchester County dedicated solely to rehabilitation medicine. Burke offers both inpatient and outpatient programs for those who have experienced a disabling illness, traumatic injury or joint replacement surgery. The hospital is part of Burke Rehabilitation Center, which also includes Burke Medical Research Institute and Burke’s Outpatient Division. Burke’s world-renowned doctors and therapists provide state-of-the-art treatment while its research scientists explore the frontiers of neurological and rehabilitation medicine.

Things every grandparent should own Having the grandkids over can be a little daunting sometimes. What to do with them? There is always cooking or baking together, and yes, there is always television, but having these things on-hand creates instant fun and can be a lifesaver, if you just don’t know what to do. A classic board game: Whether it’s Hi Ho Cherry-O for younger kids, Operation for elementary age, or Monopoly for elementary age and older, a classic board game is a great way to get kids off of electronics and interacting with you. A craft box: Markers, paper, stickers, and colored pencils go a long way with kids. Buy a craft box and stock it with whatever you think the kids will like: pom poms, glitter, foam shapes. A soccer ball: Or a football, baseball, basketball or Frisbee– anything that gets them outside, using their muscles, and running around. A fuzzy blanket: For chilly days and sleepovers, a blanket that is soft and cuddly can help kids feel safe and secure. Keep the blanket at your house instead of letting them take it home, so they can look forward to using it only when they are with you. A go-to snack: When the kids are fussy or famished, a snack that’s healthy is a musthave. Ask the parents for suggestions or try these kid-favorites: granola mixed with dried fruit and chocolate chips, peanut butter and sliced apples, hummus and cut up veggies, crackers with bite-size pieces of cheese.

in the Garden Part 2

In the last edition of Boomers & Beyond, we shared tips about planning a garden’s fundamental design, whether it's a community project or a private one. In Part 2, we'll move on to talking about how and where to cultivate your plants. Boomers & Beyond suggests that variety is key - having an array of different buds can help ensure that the garden stays beautiful throughout the seasons and shows a nice array of flowers and shurbs. In fact, diversity is also important, because a garden with many types of flowers acts as a breeding ground for healthy bacteria and bugs, like earthworms, that will help the plants grow. Aim to design your garden like a “decorative display” and really make the space reflect your personality. Think about a few items that you can place in the foliage to give it a more personal feel, whether you choose a statue or an antique wheel. Finally, you want to think about how you'll protect all of your hard work from pests like rabbits and deer. There are many different animal repellents, but some can give off an unpleasant odor or take a lot of work to re-apply. Do your research carefully and make sure to ask a clerk at the hardware store about the particular scent emitted by the product. In Part 3 of this series, we’ll share final tips for making your garden shine!

ATTORNEYS AT LAW Many Years of Experience Protecting the Legal Interests of the Elderly & Special Needs Populations

Why should I spend money hiring attorneys to do asset protection planning for me and my loved ones? Currently, the monthly cost for nursing home care in New York ranges between $10,000-$15,000, and properly certified home health attendants (nurse aides) can cost as much or more for round- the-clock home care. Statistically, it is likely that most people will need either or both of these care options as they grow older. It is critical that you plan appropriately to best minimize the strain that elder care costs may have on your estate, and to help put you in the best position possible to qualify for benefits that are largely covered by the government, under Medicare or Medicaid. Our firm has attorneys with extensive experience in developing tax-effective action plans for our clients that help protect their assets from government imposition. We have also been very successful in negotiating the complex bureaucratic minefield in which Medicaid is now mired. We have achieved remarkable results for our clients on a host of Medicaid related issues, from obtaining Medicaid approvals for coverage of home care and institutional care benefits, to very accommodative resolutions of Medicaid spousal recovery claims, where the office of Medicaid aggressively pursues the non-institutionalized (i.e., or “community”) spouse for Medicaid benefits provided.

Why should I have a lawyer prepare my will? If you die without a Will, the law, not you, determines how your assets are divided and to whom they are given. A poorly drafted Will may result in a sizeable chunk of your assets not ending up where you want them to go. We are an experienced law firm that can expertly craft your will to address your long-term care, tax, estate planning, and asset protection planning issues. It is in your best interest that planning be done properly so as to minimize the tax burden on your estate. Our experience and skill in the fields of Trusts, Wills, and Estates enables our firm to uniquely tailor estate planning to your individual needs. We will review your entire estate and draft a personalized plan that will best direct the disposition of your assets after death, whether through your Will, or by means of testamentary substitutes (trusts, joint-asset ownership with right of survivorship, or by beneficiary designation in life insurance policies, annuities, or individual retirement accounts).

My father is having difficulty caring for himself. I am afraid he will no longer be able to live on his own. I am worried about finding the money to pay for his care, whether he stays at home or moves to an assisted living facility or nursing home. What do I do? Your concerns are certainly daunting, and heart-rending. Our firm offers you a caring hand, an open ear, and uncompromising professional competence, and commitment. We will help find for you solutions that best suit your needs, using the latest tax, trust, and other asset protection strategies available under the law.

Wartburg presents Inaugural Edgar J. Myers Leadership Award and honors over 1,000 years of service at their Annual Years of Service Luncheon Wartburg, a leading provider of senior care services in Westchester County, honored 89 employees for their service and dedication at the annual Years of Service Luncheon held March 11 on their beautiful 34-acre campus. “We celebrated 89 employees who together represented 1,005 years of service. What a great testimony to our employees and the value that Wartburg brings as an employer of choice in Westchester County and the Mount Vernon community,” said Dorothea Bell, Executive Vice President of Human Resources at Wartburg. Awards are given every year to employees for service in increments of five years. Three employees received an honor for 35 years of dedicated care to our residents and registrants and the same for 25 years of service. Six employees received a gift for 20 years of employment at Wartburg, 20 employees for 15 years and 25 caregivers for 10 years. Wartburg was honored to recognize 32 employees for five years of care. For the first time this year, Wartburg presented the Edgar J. Myers Leadership Award, named for the longtime beloved President of the Wartburg

provided

Foundation and former board member. Patricia Kyer, an 18-year home care veteran with Wartburg, received the inaugural award for her dedication to patients and embodying the mission. In response to her recently bestowed honor, Ms. Kyer said, “To be given an award in Mr. Myers name makes me feel especially honored. I so very much enjoy the work I do for the home care patients at Wartburg”.

“Wartburg is a service organization, known for generations of caring and dedication to vulnerable populations,” said David J. Gentner, President and CEO of Wartburg. “We’re only as good as our people, and our people are what make Wartburg so special. We’re happy to invest in our employees, and are always grateful when they honor us back with their longtime service.” Wartburg is an award-winning provider of comprehensive senior services, including independent living, assisted living, Alzheimer’s/dementia care, skilled nursing, rehabilitation, adult day services and hospice care. Its 34-acre campus in Mount Vernon serves seniors and their families in southern Westchester and the northern Bronx, and now the tri-state area. Wartburg’s nursing home has been recognized by U. S. Over the past few years, Wartburg has launched an ambitious building expansion program, including the Friedrichs Residence, providing affordable housing for seniors with 61 independent living apartments, and a rehabilitation and adult day services center of excellence both opened in 2013. & Beyond

Stay young and healthy…naturally Seemingly everywhere we look, there's another advertisement touting a pill or a supplement that can reverse aging or otherwise defeat wrinkles. Never mind that very few of these have actually been proven to work and a lot can be costly, there's a risk that they can be unhealthy, too. In fact, one recent study found that just one out of every three multivitamins actually has the content on the back of the label. Some have too little vitamins, while others have too much. So instead of trying things that haven't even been verified by the FDA, you may want to look for anti-aging methods through more natural beauty practices. One of the best products for keeping away wrinkles? Sunscreen. Anyone who is going to spend some time outside should apply sunscreen. Besides the risk of cancer, exposure to the sun can cause liver spots and premature wrinkles. While some people believe that their make-up can protect them from harsh sunshine, Boomers & Beyond recommends using sunscreen as well. Maintaining physical health is the very best way to remain feeling young. While not everyone will be going to the Olympics, senior or otherwise, remaining focused and consistent with exercise efforts can be an important way to maintain strength, flexibility and health. According to some studies, it is possible to have as little as a five percent drop in cardiovascular fitness from your 20s to your 50s, if consistency is maintained. Looking to keep your brain young, too? Exercise fills that gap as well. Researchers recently concluded that regular physical fitness can improve decision-making skills, memory and attention after a reviewof more than 100 different studies examining the effects of a workout. Having trouble getting started? Experts recommend using machines that promote lowimpact activity. Resistance training with rows or free weights can be a great way to break a sweat and get moving. Ellipticals have also become popular in recent years, because they don't cause as much pounding on the joints as a treadmill, but you can get just as much of a workout. Just remember to stay away from any of those socalled magic pills and other fads.

Who qualifies for a Life Insurance Settlements or an Advanced Benefit Loan? At B & M Capital Inc., we advise on the various financial benefits of selling or taking a loan against your life insurance policy either through a life settlement or an advanced benefit loan. When we speak to individuals or professionals at seminars and conferences, they are amazed to learn how old the life settlement industry, about 100 years, and how many financial institution own or invest in this type of business. Yet, the greatest misconception in educating potential clients and professionals is, who are the people that qualify for a life settlement or advanced benefit loan? The answer to all of them is anyone who has obtained the age of 65 or older. They must be of retirement age, not necessary retired. They can still be actively working; actually, some of these people are still active members in the work force. The point that I am trying to get across is, today’s seniors are very different than what society shows us or what we perceive in our minds. Seniors, who are looking for other financial sources to find income or raise fund do not have to be hospitalized, terminally ill or destitute. There are many seniors who take advantage of our services that are in generally good health and financially sound. Here are some reasons why seniors take advantage of our services:

1. They are outliving their retirement funds due to the advancement in medicine, change in life style,

and the cost of living in the Northeast. Most seniors that live in the tri state area, enjoy being close to the greatest City in the world and do not want to leave. They have made friends, families, memories, and built a life that is unique to the Northeast. I know this to be true because; this is what I was told by my own parents, who were not born in this region.

2. Seniors are still very shrewd investors. Once I explain to seniors

how much value their life insurance contract could be possibly worth. They are quick to act. First we start with basic underwriting requirements and we submit the necessary paperwork. No cost to my client, a potential offer is then offered by a top-tier financial company. In a three to four week span, my clients are amazed on how easy and financially rewarding this type of transaction can be.

B & M Capital is a structured settlement company specializing in the purchasing of life insurance, annuities, structured settlements and offering Advanced Benefit Loans.

Is the volume on your television creeping up? Is telephone conversation sometimes difficult to understand? If you answered yes to any of these questions, there is a strong possibility that you may have some degree of hearing loss. It has been shown that if a hearing loss is present, a person has to struggle to hear speech. Undue stress is put on that individual. This stress can have a negative effect on a persons quality of life. It can cause that person to avoid many social situations. This, in turn, can cause that person to become more isolated. Over the past 15 years Westchester Audiology and Hearing Aid Specialist, P.C. has been helping people hear and communicate better by providing superior healthcare to their patients.

We are excited to announce the arrival of our new standard 4-year warranty! Our wide selection of styles, capabilities, features and colors ensure that your hearing needs will be met, and our warranty gives you the protection that you deserve.
