Client Testimonials I reached out to you during the most stressful time of life for both my loved ones and myself - horror had occurred to my dear loving mother. My mom had fractured her hip and due to her frail health and advanced age required risky hip replacement surgery. Many issues legal and otherwise arose which I could not personally resolve. You not only resolved each and every one, but you continue to do so now, over 4 years later. You always display extreme sincerity, compassion and friendship, using your vast experience and confidence in your ability, to continually bring satisfaction, positive results and a tremendous sense of relief and comfort to my loved ones and myself. You have gone out of your way to visit Mom on multiple occasions in her Nursing house and we love you for it. As an attorney, friend, and a great man, I could not possibly hope to know anyone more phenomenal. The three greatest men I have ever known are my dear departed father, my dear departed father-in-law and Ely Rosenzveig. – Jeff D.

I hired Ely to assist with my parents estate planning and it was a wise decision. He is a true expert in navigating through complex elder care law and procedures. His guidance was invaluable and his communication excellent. I would strongly recommend his services.

Is retirement boring you? Job options for retirees You dreamed about retiring for years, but now that it’s arrived, you find yourself growing bored. A person can only golf so much and your spouse keeps complaining that your always hovering. You want to feel a sense of purpose, get out and be social, earning extra money: But you don’t want to commit to a taxing nine to five routine. Here are a few great job options for the retiree who wants to get back into the workforce on their own terms.
3. Usher Do you love movies, concerts, or stand-up comedy? Does the idea of being paid, while you watch the latest action flick or take in your favorite band appeal to you? You may love a job working as an usher at your neighborhood cinema, little theater, or concert hall. Simply collect tickets, show patrons to their seats, hand out programs, and provide directions to the bathrooms–and enjoy the show in between. 4. Bookkeeper Do you have a head for numbers and a desire to work from home? You may enjoy a job working as a self-employed Bookkeeper or Income Tax Preparer. Reach out to small businesses in your community and see if they could benefit from a few hours of your expertise each week and carve out your own niche. 5. Pet Sitter Are you an avid animal-lover? Do dogs and cats take an instant liking to you? If so, you may wish to supplement your income by becoming a pet-sitter. Yes, by providing a home-away-from-home for Fluffy or Spike, you can keep busy, earn extra cash, and snuggle with an affectionate four-legged friend.
1. Referee Are you a life-long sports fan? Have you spent a hefty chunk of your life hanging out at your local rink, stadium, field? You may love a job working as a referee or umpire. Both enjoy part-time, seasonal work–perfect for the sports-addicted retiree who still wants time to do other things. Other possible sports-minded career choices include coaching, ticket-taking, and announcing. 2. Tour Guide If you love interacting with people and have an appreciation for a local tourist attraction, you may be the ideal individual to work as a tour guide. Leaders, dignitaries and supporters come together for “Then and Now” exhibit launch Burke Rehabilitation Center, the only acute rehabilitation hospital in White Plains, NY, officially kicked off a year-long celebration to commemorate its 100 years of pioneering rehabilitation with a ribbon cutting of its Burke Centennial Lobby Exhibit on January 22. The lobby exhibit’s “Then and Now” theme features numerous vignettes highlighting Burke’s past, present, and future. The exhibit, which is in Burke’s Wood Pavilion is open to the public through the end of the year. Visitors can view cherished artifacts and relics dating back to Burke’s inception 100 years ago, such as a hand-printed original blueprint of Burke’s Billings Building by renowned architectural firm McKim, Mead & White and a turn-of-the-century pocket watch owned by John Masterson Burke, the hospital’s founder. The exhibit also highlights new innovations in rehabilitation technology, including a prosthetic arm produced by a 3D printer, interactive demos with a photon microscope, and a Vital Health Connect digital patch that monitors and wirelessly transmits patients’ vital signs to health care providers. White Plains Mayor Thomas Roach, Deputy County Executive Kevin Plunkett, Legislator Ben Boykin and a number of key figures and local dignitaries attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony. Dignitaries were joined by Burke leaders and supporters, including Burke CEO and Executive Director Mary Beth Walsh, M.D. and Burke Medical Research Institute Executive Director Raj Ratan, M.D., Ph.D., who provided opening remarks and participated in the ribboncutting ceremony.
“We welcome the community to join us in celebrating our centennial year,” said Walsh. “We take great pride in our history in medical rehabilitation and look forward to helping move rehabilitation forward for many years to come.” More information on the new lobby exhibit and Burke’s upcoming events throughout 2015 is available at www.burke.org/100years.

Retirement hobbies and activities that keep you young and healthy The twilight years after retirement used to mean a brief decade before the inevitable happened. How does the old saying go about death and taxes? Today, things are much different: With advances in healthcare, people can reasonably expect to live another third of their life after retirement. If you retire early and live a long life, you may need to reinvent yourself. Hobbies take on a new meaning when you are going to do them for one, two, or maybe even three or four. Creating an active lifestyle is the new version of the fountain of youth.
Department of Education publishes its list of education subject expert shortages throughout the nation. Mathematics, music, science, and vocational arts all can be found on the list. In some areas the shortage is so critical that schools are offering fast-track certification for specialists. Not only are you doing a service to your community, but you are bringing in a paycheck and keeping your mind strong and healthy. Feel the burn Any exercise is good exercise, but research suggests that heavy strength training can make your twilight years even healthier. As we age, we lose bone and muscle mass. This is the reason that older adults fall frequently and sustain more damage when they do. Weight training, lifting heavy weights under the supervision of a trainer, can return muscle mass to core areas and increase bone strength.
Dance, dance, dance! Many organizations for seniors offer free or inexpensive dance classes. You can learn ballroom, jazz, and even hip-hop. This is more than a fun activity. Research shows that taking dance classes once or twice a week significantly improves late life functions and core muscular strength. There is something special about dancing as a couple. It serves as a romantic, sensual bonding moment and it is also good for your aging self-esteem to be able to go to a party and cut up the rug like no one else. Alliance Homecare Treats and cares for clients like family
Gregory Solometo had a great job, working at the former global financial firm Lehman Brothers, making a living in the spectacular city that is Tokyo. But in 2002 he left Tokyo to come back stateside. How could he? Actually, how could Solometo not? Back home in Rockland County, Solometo’s beloved grandmother, Val Cerny, needed him. Cerny was 84years-old at the time and living alone in her house as her network of friends and community faded away. Unfortunately, this is a sadly common story for any widow in their 80s. Mrs. Cerny and her late husband, Raymond, practically raised Gregory. Raymond succumbed to ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) in 1991. Solometo returned to care for his grandmother for five years. She was a native of a small town in Nebraska who moved to Rockland County after World War II. At this point, Gregory was working on Wall Street and living in Manhattan, yet taking care of his grandmother upstate several days per week. During this time, he encountered the stresses, challenges and costs of caring for her, both at home, and in a facility. Val Cerny died in May of 2008 at the age of 90. Solometo’s journey taking care of his grandmother was the inspiration for starting Alliance Homecare, which currently serves New York City, Long Island and the Northern suburbs in the Lower Hudson Valley. Expansion plans are underway in 2015 to cover Northern New Jersey and Southern Connecticut. Alliance Homecare currently has three offices in the area: Woodbury, Long Island, which serves as its headquarters, midtown Manhattan and West Nyack. Solometo started Alliance Homecare in 2009 with two of his childhood friends, Michele Teter and Diane Sirakovsky, who are both Registered Nurses. Teter and Sirakovsky both worked at the prestigious New YorkPresbyterian Columbia University Medical Center in the Neurosurgical Intensive Care Unit. All three of these individuals actively participated in the home care of Mrs. Cerny until her passing in 2008 and share the same passion for providing unparalleled care at home.
“Our company was founded as a direct result of our experience looking after my grandmother,” Solometo said. “My grandparents made a lot of sacrifices for me during my childhood and when it came time for me to return the favor, there was no hesitation. I’m fortunate to have that life experience and to pass that knowledge and insight on to our clients. The culture of our company is based on the value system they taught me. We take care of patients like they are our own family.” Alliance Homecare even has what is called “The Grandma Rule” (SM). If they interview a caregiver and can trust that person with their own family, they will hire them to serve clients and their families. Alliance is dedicated to retaining this high standard of caregiver selection and quality, regardless of the size or pace of the company’s expansion in the coming years. Led by a renowned team of compassionate and skilled care managers, Alliance Homecare offers a variety of services, including skilled nursing, home health aides, companions, geriatric care management and social work, physical therapy, and nutritional counseling. Alliance Homecare treats and cares for a variety of patients with conditions such as Alzheimer’s and dementia, Parkinson’s, diabetes, COPD, palliative end of life care, oncology support, post surgical recovery, intravenous therapy and traumatic injury. They also provide well-needed companionship or respite care to family caregivers who need support or just a break.

Alliance Homecare routinely receives passionate endorsements and testimonials from clients, which include the family of former New York Governor Hugh Carey, who served in office from 1975 until 1982. Governor Carey passed away in 2011 at age 92 and spent his final 2 years under the care and guidance of Alliance and their management team. From the family of Governor Carey: “Our priority was a highly competent nursing team; Alliance provided that and much more, including respect for our father’s dignity and quality of life; consistent communication with family members; effective coordination with doctors and other healthcare staff. The nurses adapted to challenges with ingenuity, coped with medical concerns in a calm and skillful manner, and interacted with both patient and family with poise and perhaps most important, a sense of humor.” Solometo says of his grandmother, “She lived a great life and inspired us in so many different ways.” Her spirit lives on in the special way Solometo and the proud Alliance Homecare staff care for each and every one of their clients.

An apple a day can keep Alzheimer’s away Of course, you have heard the slogan: “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” As it turns out, the fruit could have even more health benefits for seniors. While researchers are working hard to battle Alzheimer’s disease, there are things you can do to keep the brain healthy, like eating a balanced diet that includes one fruit in particular: Apples. Not only are they delicious, but apples contribute to greater bone health, cholesterol depletion, and Alzheimer’s prevention. A study at Cornell University found a chemical called quercetin protected rat brain cells from the kind of free radical damage that may lead to Alzheimer’s disease. When shopping for apples, try to choose locally grown organic apples to avoid any pesticides that may be present. According to an analysis done by the Environmental Working Group, pesticides showed up on 98 percent of more than 700 apple samples tested, even after being washed. Apples are commonly sprayed with Syngenta Paraquat, a pesticide under scrutiny for a possible link Parkinson’s disease. Research suggests that three popular trends to help minimize the risk of Alzheimer’s are diet, physical health and fitness, and companionship. So what should you do? Invite your loved ones over for a fun night of cooking and have a friendly stroll around the neighborhood afterwards.

Make “Aging In Place” A Reality! People usually are the happiest at home William Shakespeare Many aging individuals have a strong desire to remain living independently in their own homes. Home is where the heart is and your favorite recliner! The truth is, at home you are most comfortable and familiar with your surroundings. But with age, remaining independent and safe at home can be a challenge. Many activities like home upkeep, driving safely, independent mobility, and socializing are impacted with the aging process and can limit a person’s desire to stay independent and at home. With foresight, planning, and the right services you can stay home, lessen burden of care, prevent injury, and “age in place”. The term “age in place” refers to an individual living in the residence of their choice, as they age for as long as possible, receiving necessary services at home that maintains their quality of life. The benefits to aging in place include: • Comfort and familiar security • Keep community ties • Avoidance of institutional acquired infections • Preserve brain function through home management tasks To age in place and maintain high quality of life takes community resources and a team of caregivers and experts. With the many benefits of aging in place, come the challenges of keeping independence and safety in the home. Moving independently, navigating stairs safely and bathroom safety are the most common aging in place hurdles along with financial restraints. If you or a loved one would like to age in place, and safe mobility is challenge- a home physical therapist is the expert to talk to.
A home physical therapy consult can: 1. Improve physical wellness through a personalized home exercise program 2. Increase home safety and independent mobility with equipment and home modification recommendations 3. Decrease falls and injury at home through balance training Like many things planning ahead is essential. To make aging in place a reality start planning now. Your health and quality of life in the golden years depends on it. Make the choice now to age in place. ATTORNEYS AT LAW Many Years of Experience Protecting the Legal Interests of the Elderly & Special Needs Populations
Why should I spend money hiring attorneys to do asset protection planning for me and my loved ones? Currently, the monthly cost for nursing home care in New York ranges between $10,000-$15,000, and properly certified home health attendants (nurse aides) can cost as much or more for round- the-clock home care. Statistically, it is likely that most people will need either or both of these care options as they grow older. It is critical that you plan appropriately to best minimize the strain that elder care costs may have on your estate, and to help put you in the best position possible to qualify for benefits that are largely covered by the government, under Medicare or Medicaid. Our firm has attorneys with extensive experience in developing tax-effective action plans for our clients that help protect their assets from government imposition. We have also been very successful in negotiating the complex bureaucratic minefield in which Medicaid is now mired. We have achieved remarkable results for our clients on a host of Medicaid related issues, from obtaining Medicaid approvals for coverage of home care and institutional care benefits, to very accommodative resolutions of Medicaid spousal recovery claims, where the office of Medicaid aggressively pursues the non-institutionalized (i.e., or “community”) spouse for Medicaid benefits provided.
Why should I have a lawyer prepare my will? If you die without a Will, the law, not you, determines how your assets are divided and to whom they are given. A poorly drafted Will may result in a sizeable chunk of your assets not ending up where you want them to go. We are an experienced law firm that can expertly craft your will to address your long-term care, tax, estate planning, and asset protection planning issues. It is in your best interest that planning be done properly so as to minimize the tax burden on your estate. Our experience and skill in the fields of Trusts, Wills, and Estates enables our firm to uniquely tailor estate planning to your individual needs. We will review your entire estate and draft a personalized plan that will best direct the disposition of your assets after death, whether through your Will, or by means of testamentary substitutes (trusts, joint-asset ownership with right of survivorship, or by beneficiary designation in life insurance policies, annuities, or individual retirement accounts).
My father is having difficulty caring for himself. I am afraid he will no longer be able to live on his own. I am worried about finding the money to pay for his care, whether he stays at home or moves to an assisted living facility or nursing home. What do I do? Your concerns are certainly daunting, and heart-rending. Our firm offers you a caring hand, an open ear, and uncompromising professional competence, and commitment. We will help find for you solutions that best suit your needs, using the latest tax, trust, and other asset protection strategies available under the law.

Ways to improve your driving skills Seniors bring years of experience to driving. However, sometimes skill levels decline without realizing our bodies are not what they used to be. How can you learn if your driving skills remain sharp enough to operate our vehicles safely? Self-Test The world’s largest organization devoted to everything auto-related, AAA, has a simple test, Drivers 65 Plus, that allows people to self-rate their safe-driving skills. Respond to 15 statements and interpret the results to learn your current level of awareness and safety driving habits. Senior-Focused Driver-Improvement Courses AAA goes beyond testing with their website, which is dedicated to helping seniors drive safer and longer. Filled with driving tips, knowledge and suggestions to adjust for slower reflexes or less than perfect eyesight. This site also has information on driver-improvement courses for seniors. Along with bringing you up to date with newer and more popular technology, completing one of these courses may earn you an insurance-premium discount.
Reducing Senior Car Insurance Premiums Bundle Coverage: Buying two or more policies from a single company can bring you significant discounts. Pay Only for Protection You Need: Being over-protected generates no additional benefits — only higher cost. Be Sure Your Rates Reflect Your Driving Record and Personal Information: Just as credit reports often contain errors, your personal information and driving record may face the same fate. Manage your Deductibles and Compare Prices With Higher Deductible Amounts: Consider increasing deductibles to $500 or $1,000 and compare your savings.

Boost your brain power with trail mix recipe from Boomers & Beyond No matter if you prefer salty treats or sweet eats, trail mix is a great snack. It combines a number of different tastes in one transportable snack. This savory selection is not only an ideal choice for seniors on-the-go, but it can feature several ingredients ideal for increasing cognitive health. Carry it to the park, bring it to the book club or use it to become the talk of your circle of friends, but be sure to include these brain-boosting treats in your trail mix: Build your base Depending on personal preferences, the core of your creation may differ. Even if you don't choose to make these ingredients the highlight of your dish, consider adding them to the pot: • Nuts: Walnuts, peanuts and almonds have all been linked to improved memory, according to Health.com. Whether you choose to roast them, salt them or throw them in raw, nuts are the ideal choice for a cognitive-focused base. • Cereal: Whole-grain cereals, such as Cheerios, Chex or bran, can provide a nice crunch to the mix. Fiber is key for bolstering overall physical health, staving off heart disease and stroke. • Popcorn: While this choice may seem unhealthy to some, nutritionists agree that popcorn is actually one of the healthiest foods on the market - as long as you eat it plain. Don't reach for the microwave pouch, but use a pan and small bit of extra-virgin olive oil to pop your own kernels. These puffs are an excellent source of whole grain, fiber and B vitamins.

Three strategies for building your self-esteem Confidence is an important part of living a happy life and maintaining productive relationships. But there could be even more benefits to having a positive sense of self-worth. According to studies, a happy, healthy outlook can stave off some of the negative effects of aging. Here are three tips for cultivating healthier levels of self-esteem. Seek out social connection: Regardless of age, individuals who have supportive, loving relationships with friends and family consistently report higher self-esteem and overall happiness. Promote feelings of independence: One possible cause for self-esteem dips in aging adults is the loss of independence due to physical and cognitive decline. This is played out in the conflicts created by conversations of whether an elderly loved one should still be driving, or if they can still safely live on their own. Cope with life changes by finding support: We are social creatures by nature, and we connect with each other by telling stories and sharing experiences. Communities and groups aimed at supporting members through various life transitions—from becoming an empty-nester to dealing with a loved one's death—are good resources for handling these events in a healthy way.

Is the volume on your television creeping up? Is telephone conversation sometimes difficult to understand?
