Healthcare News - Fairfield County
Where do doctors go to treat their own pain? “As a board-certified internist who has been in practice for over 13 years, I spend much of my time attempting to alleviate the pain and suffering of my patients. As a clinician, one of the biggest challenges I face is helping my patients deal with musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes-those all-too-common, yet frequently debilitating ailments caused by bad backs, pinched nerves, arthritis, and the like. Unfortunately, much of what I have to offer my patients boils down to the following: take a pain pill, stretch if you can, wait, and hope for the best. After a failed trial of "conservative" therapy a call might go out to the orthopedic surgeon for assistance; a truly satisfactory result is not common. The simple fact is that physicians are not well trained to deal with musculoskeletal pain, and patients can suffer as a result. Thankfully, my views on this topic have been turned completely upside down since I have personally discovered Dr. Jonathan Donath's outstanding practice. After beginning a vigorous exercise regime, I started to experience awful neck and upper back pain, accompanied by numbness and tingling down my left arm and fingers. For weeks I tried to nurse the pain with non steroidal anti-inflammatory medication, but the pain persisted and got to the point that I was almost unable to work, sleep, or most importantly, play guitar. I was literally in tears from the excruciating pain. A neurosurgeon diagnosed a herniated disc and pinched nerve in my neck and offered to decompress it with an operation. In desperation I called Dr. Donath instead. My visit to Dr. Donath's office was an outstanding experience. He spent about an hour with me and combined multiple modalities to fix the herniated disc in my neck: deep massage, active release techniques, traditional manipulation, cold therapy, and finally spinal decompression. After that first hour with Dr. Donath my pain had decreased from a 10/10 down to a manageable 4/10, and I was able to comfortably move my head and neck. That very night I was able to play guitar again. Two days later I went back Dr. Robert Sidlow MD, MBA for another series of treatments and the pain decreased even further. After about five days the pain was absolutely gone. Unbelievable! Since then he has used the same Internist, New York, NY wonderful techniques to help me overcome painful bouts of sciatica as well. My own patients and family members have become "believers" in Dr. Donath's abilities as well--the results he achieves are real and lasting. He is my go to guy for the majority of musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes that I now realize are truly treatable.” “I had been experiencing lower back pain for at least 6-7 months before I had visited Dr. Donath's office. Prior to this, I had tried doing stretches at home, taking some medications, acupuncture, but despite this, things did not improve. In fact, symptoms only progressed and became unbearable. It was so difficult to get out of bed in the morning, work my 12 hour shifts as a physician in Urgent Care and do my daily work outs, which I enjoyed so much. My colleague at work, who is also a physician and patient of Dr. Donath, recommended I see him and I was so glad I did. On my first visit, he patiently listened to my story and examined me carefully. He took his time to discuss possible diagnoses, sent me for an MRI that day, and saw me the next day to discuss results, and potential treatment plan. I listened to his advice and began spinal decompression, which was the best decision I have ever made. After a few visits, my pain started to subside and shortly I became pain-free. Dr. Donath and his staff are knowledgeable and very professional. I am so grateful to them for getting me back to my normal life. I highly recommend him to anyone who is having back pain.”
Dr. Dawn Garcen, MD Family Medicine/Urgent Care, White Plains, NY
“I am a pediatrician and in my work, I have to bend down a lot and I'm constantly lifting kids. I usually have one to three bad flare ups of low back pain every year. When my back would "go out", I could barely walk to the bathroom and would have to lie down in bed for a few days. I have tried everything: doing nothing and "toughing it out", muscle relaxants, physical therapy, chiropractic, therapeutic massage, and even painful steroid injections. Nothing worked. When I moved to Westchester, I met Dr. Jonathan Donath. In just a couple of sessions with Dr. Donath, the pain completely disappeared. If it hadn't happened to me, I wouldn't have believed it. During my last flare up, I was expecting to be on my back for 2-3 days and in pain for 2 weeks. Instead, after one session with Dr. Donath, I was able to walk; two more sessions and I was fine. I could walk, bend down and I had almost no pain. Since that last back episode, Dr. Donath has helped me with my tendonitis in my right hand and with my chronic knee problems. I recommend Dr. Donath to everyone with back, muscle or joint pain. Even if you have not had relief with other treatments and other chiropractors, give Dr. Donath a chance. I did and he changed my life.”
Dr. Eugene Dinkevich, MD Division Chief of General Pediatrics—SUNY Downstate Medical Center Brooklyn, NY
“I really don't have words to express my feelings about the care I got in the last 3 months. I was almost handicapped, living with terrible pain all the time, crippling my day to day life. I am a medical doctor and work in a hospital with all sorts of amazing physicians, but after seeing a physical therapist, getting epidural steroids injections, many orthopedists and neurosurgeons, finally my destination lead me to see Dr Jonathan Donath. With great skepticism, I lied down for spinal decompression therapy. It was unbelievable that after only two initial sessions, my radiating pain down my leg had almost disappeared. Gradually, I started getting better, started doing exercises that they gave me midway through the treatment. Now, I am doing all my daily activities without any pain. I highly recommend Dr Jonathan for any problems related to the musculoskeletal system, you will definitely feel at home and will get better.”
Dr. Pankaj Jain—Pediatric Cardiologist, New York, NY
“Dr. Donath is amazing. As an internist, I have to decide between traditional western medicine and chiropractic care for my patients with back pain and other joint-related complaints. Dr. Donath's thorough and comprehensive approach to care allows my patients to get relief faster and less invasively. The result is invariably positive. One of my patients said he got his life and golf game back after seeing Dr. Donath. Another said that he was able to get rid of a pain she had for over 5 years in just a few sessions. I can confirm his success firsthand: Dr. Donath relieved my chronic pain with multiple techniques: manipulation, spinal decompression, vitamins and supplements, exercise and stretching. His hands-on approach and love of his work is reflected by the excellent results he gets. I continue to send my friends, family and patients to Dr. Donath because I know he gets results.”
Dr. Annebeth Litt, MD Internist, White Plains, NY
“My wife actually went to Dr. Donath before I did. She was experiencing terrible neck pain and literally could not move her neck in any direction without excruciating pain. It was so bad that initially she was unable to drive herself to Dr. Donath’s office. After only two spinal decompression treatments by Dr. Donath, she was able to resume driving. Following a few weeks of treatment, she was pain free and her range of motion was back to normal. A few years later, I started having arm and elbow pain. I tweaked something in my arm while working out and anti-inflammatory medication and pain killers did not help. The problem affected my ability to function as an eye surgeon. I saw Dr. Donath who diagnosed my condition as lateral epicondylitis (more commonly known as tennis elbow). He treated me utilizing Active Release Techniques and I improved almost immediately. He also gave me numerous exercises to do at home. After three visits to his office, my pain was completely gone. I highly recommend Dr. Donath to my family, friends, and patients who experience any sort of musculoskeletal pain.”

Communities across the country join in celebration of Men’s Health Month PAGE 7
Healthcare News - Fairfield County June, 2016
Men’s health can improve with the help of the women in our lives, increasing physical activity at home and at work, and teaching young boys the value of healthy eating and healthy living.” Proclamations from governors and mayors, and resources in both English and Spanish are available at www.menshealthmonth.org . Silent Health Crisis
June is Men’s Health Month and communities across the country and around the globe are joining Men’s Health Network in celebrating this special awareness period. The goal of Men’s Health Month is to encourage men and boys to take care of their health and to heighten the public’s awareness of the many preventable health problems that affect them and their families. “These efforts reach men where they live, work, play, and pray,” said Ana Fadich, Vice President of Men’s Health Network, which organizes Men’s Heath Month events nationwide. “They’re a great way for healthcare providers, policy makers, the media, and individuals to educate men, their families, and the public on a wide range of men’s health issues, including cancers, hypogonadism, cardiovascular problems, sexual and mental health concerns.” During Men’s Health Month, health care professionals, private corporations, faith-based and fraternal organizations, government
agencies, and other interested organization plan activities and events which focus on the health and well-being of men and boys. “As a urologist, prostate specialist and Men’s Health Network advocate, I feel this is a critical time to encourage men and their families to focus on Men’s Health,” said Judd W. Moul, MD, Professor and Director, Duke Prostate Cancer, Durham, NC, and Advisor to Men’s Health Network. “Many men do not like to go to the doctor and do not like to think about their own health. This is one time a year when we can get the word out that men need to take time for themselves, to think about their health, and take action to improve their health!" “Men's Health is more than just physical health,” stated Sankineni J. Rao, MD, George Washington - Medical Faculty Associates, and Advisor to Men’s Health Network. “In addition to regular check-ups, it also involves mental and spiritual awareness, and addressing socioeconomic barriers.
“There is a silent health crisis in America... it’s that fact that, on average, American men live sicker and die younger than American women.” Dr. David Gremillion Men’s Health Network

TOP DOCTORS of Fairfield
The Doctor that Medical Doctors go see for their own pain. By Dale McKnight Healthcare Correspondent
Back and neck pain can be debilitating, and Dr. Jonathan Donath DC, MS is out to change that. An expert in a variety of non-surgical pain treatments, he is clinic director of Joint Effort Chiropractic & Westchester Spinal Decompression Center in White Plains. “Many patients come to us after pain killers, physical therapy, and even epidural injections failed to alleviate their pain,” he says. “My goal is to treat back and neck pain and ultimately fix the underlying problem so that surgery is prevented whenever possible.” Dr. Donath treats herniated and/or bulging discs, pinched nerves, spasms, strains and sprains, as well as sciatica and other conditions. His patients come from across the region, and even from around the world, ranging from children to senior citizens to professional athletes. Many prominent medical doctors in Westchester and Fairfield county and New York City refer patients to him, and many physicians themselves seek Dr. Donath out for their own treatment. Dr. Donath, who’s been in private practice in White Plains for the past ten years, is renowned as a top expert in the field of Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression Therapy. This cutting-edge FDAcleared treatment is effective for even the most severe cases of herniated discs, sciatica, degenerative disc disease and failed back surgery, Dr. Donath says. “It’s remarkably effective, and we can help a staggeringly high percentage of cases get out of pain and stay out of pain, even when all other treatments have failed,” he adds. Dr. Donath recently published a book, “The Neck & Back Solution: Everything You Need to Know About Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression Therapy” (available on amazon.com) that outlines the procedure and its benefits.
Non-surgical spinal decompression can be utilized when a disc is herniated, bulging, or compressed; these conditions may pinch a nerve or even the spinal cord and cause numbness, tingling, weakness and most predominantly, pain. The technique involves a sophisticated machine that applies controlled, highly specific and gentle forces on the spine, which cause the bulge or herniation to retract off the nerve or spinal cord. Spinal decompression is performed as a patient lies comfortably on the treatment table. A special belt connected to a computer is attached just above a patient’s hips and below the level of the discs being treated. A second belt is attached above the effected level. (The setup is different for the neck.) The computer-regulated device provides cycles of varying degrees of subtle pulling, followed by relaxation. Each cycle gradually and gently stretches the spine and then relaxes it, initiating a negative pressure inside the spinal disc.
This negative pressure creates a suction, or a vacuum effect. It causes water, nutrients, and disc material to be sucked back toward the center of the disc and off the nerves, thus relieving pain and enhancing proper healing. “The procedure is extremely comfortable,” Dr. Donath says. “Most patients enjoy it, and many even fall asleep.” Dr. Donath also treats joint pain, arthritis, headaches, pain during pregnancy, sports-related injuries, chronic muscle tightness and other musculoskeletal conditions. “It’s my mission to provide not only relief for my patients but to solve the underlying cause of their conditions,” he says. Dr. Donath graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Bridgeport College of Chiropractic, and was class valedictorian. Dr. Donath also has a Master’s degree in human nutrition. He is a frequent lecturer at Jacobi Medical Center in New York City and serves as an adjunct assistant professor at the School of Medicine at New York Medical College. Joint Effort Chiropractic & Westchester Spinal Decompression Center is located at 222 Westchester Avenue in White Plains, 914-259-8104. The website is backpainwestchester.com.

Skin care: 5 tips for healthy skin PAGE 10
June, 2016
Healthcare News - Fairfield County
Good skin care — including sun protection and gentle cleansing — can keep your skin healthy and glowing for years to come.
Don't have time for intensive skin care? You can still pamper yourself by acing the basics. Good skin care and healthy lifestyle choices can help delay the natural aging process and prevent various skin problems. Get started with these 5 no-nonsense tips. 1. Protect yourself from the sun One of the most important ways to take care of your skin is to protect it from the sun. A lifetime of sun exposure can cause wrinkles, age spots and other skin problems — as well as increase the risk of skin cancer. For the most complete sun protection:
• Use sunscreen. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15. Apply sunscreen generously, and reapply every two hours — or more often if you're swimming or perspiring. • Seek shade. Avoid the sun between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., when the sun's rays are strongest.
• Wear protective clothing. Cover your skin with tightly woven long-sleeved shirts, long pants and widebrimmed hats. Also consider laundry additives, which give clothing an additional layer of ultraviolet protection for a certain number of washings, or special sun-protective clothing — which is specifically designed to block ultraviolet rays.
3. Treat your skin gently
Smoking makes your skin look older and contributes to wrinkles. Smoking narrows the tiny blood vessels in the outermost layers of skin, which decreases blood flow. This depletes the skin of oxygen and nutrients that are important to skin health. Smoking also damages collagen and elastin — the fibers that give your skin strength and elasticity. In addition, the repetitive facial expressions you make when smoking — such as pursing your lips when inhaling and squinting your eyes to keep out smoke — can contribute to wrinkles. If you smoke, the best way to protect your skin is to quit. Ask your doctor for tips or treatments to help you stop smoking.
• Avoid strong soaps. Strong soaps and detergents can strip oil from your skin. Instead, choose mild cleansers.
2. Don't smoke
Source: Mayo Clinic Staff
Daily cleansing and shaving can take a toll on your skin. To keep it gentle:
• Limit bath time. Hot water and long showers or baths remove oils from your skin. Limit your bath or shower time, and use warm — rather than hot — water.
• Shave carefully. To protect and lubricate your skin, apply shaving cream, lotion or gel before shaving. For the closest shave, use a clean, sharp razor. Shave in the direction the hair grows, not against it. • Pat dry. After washing or bathing, gently pat or blot your skin dry with a towel so that some moisture remains on your skin.
• Moisturize dry skin. If your skin is dry, use a moisturizer that fits your skin type. For daily use, consider a moisturizer that contains SPF.
4. Eat a healthy diet A healthy diet can help you look and feel your best. Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins. The association between diet and acne isn't clear — but some research suggests that a diet rich in vitamin C and low in unhealthy fats and processed or refined carbohydrates might promote younger looking skin.
5. Manage stress Uncontrolled stress can make your skin more sensitive and trigger acne breakouts and other skin problems. To encourage healthy skin — and a healthy state of mind — take steps to manage your stress. Set reasonable limits, scale back your to-do list and make time to do the things you enjoy. The results might be more dramatic than you expect.

I had trouble believing this myself, but what if I told you that there exists a recently FDA approved laser that can grow your hair back? It feels like an episode from a SciFi movie, only better because it is true, and the FDA agrees. Pioneers in laser medicine have discovered that Low Level Laser Light Therapy (known as LLLT) can resuscitate dying hair follicles and stimulate hair to grow again. How does it work? The laser heals the follicle by improving blood circulation, nutrient flow, and rate of removal of harmful DHT (from testosterone) among other positive benefits. On a cellular level, this means improved metabolism and protein synthesis, increased ATP (energy) production to repair the weakened follicle and cellular stimulation. All this means prevention of hair loss, improved hair quality and hair growth. But don’t take just my word for it, take the FDA’s. The FDA looked at data from thousands of patients who received a full treatment cycle, and they found it to be SAFE and EFFECTIVE. There is no pain, no surgery, no drugs, no side effects. And it works. This all translates into a modern day medical miracle. Very few people are not candidates for benefit from this device, whether you are young or old, male of female. (If all your hair is dormant, and your scalp is shiny bald with no inkling of remaining hair, you would have been excluded from the study). Of course, it takes a commitment to your hair. Each cycle is 20”, and you need to complete a 48 treatment cycle… so far, hair doesn’t grow from trees…but it can grow from a laser!

AquaCycling: A new wave
of underwater wellness
By Dale McKnight Healthcare Correspondent
An exciting new way to get fit has hit local shores. It’s known as AquaCycling, and it merges a spin-class aerobic workout with an exercise session for the back, legs and upper body that can burn over 700 calories an hour - all done in the cool, relaxing water of a pool. “It’s popular in Europe, where community pools are quite common, and now it’s taking off in the U.S., says Kristina Georges, marketing and communications director for Aqua Wellness World, which holds AquaCycling classes at the Carver Center pool in Port Chester. Maryline & Laurent Bouhier introduced AquaCycling at their gym on the Caribbean island of St. Bart’s in 2008. They later brought it to New York, and Laurent is now CEO of Aqua Wellness World, which sells patented AquaCycling equipment and supplies. Maryline, a Master Coach with 20 years of experience, teaches the water workout classes at the Carver Center in Port Chester, one of just a handful of AquaCycling facilities in the metro area. Aqua Wellness World uses ergonomically designed Italian aqua bikes made with marine-grade steel and adjustable pedaling resistance. continued on next page

High Intensity Interval Training
Train & tone your whole body on a circuit of 10 world-class aqua fitness machines. AquaCycling continued from previous page
During a one-hour AquaCycling class, riders work out on the bikes – they’re attached to the pool bottom with suction cups and can be removed between classes – submerged to waist level. Participants pedal and push against the natural resistance of the water, coached by the instructor, with music to keep up the momentum. Arm exercises are added for a muscle-toning boost. Each class is customized to meet individual needs and preferences. “It’s a great heart-healthy cardio workout, plus you get the muscular benefits, and there’s no impact on the joints,” Georges says. AquaCycling was, in fact, originally used as a form of rehab in physical therapy. Aqua Wellness World has hosted American Heart Association fundraisers such as “Wear Red to AquaCycle” events. In March, more than 60 people joined in the event in Port Chester. Class members are usually anywhere in age from teens and on up. “Our oldest participant is 84,” says Georges. Aqua Wellness World launched AquaCycling classes two years ago, and now it’s introducing the concept of aqua training. Georges notes that aqua training doesn’t mean just bouncing around in a pool, or swimming laps for fitness – it’s a new idea called Aqua Gym. This summer, two Aqua Gym programs, known as AquaHiit – for “high-intensity interval training” - will be held in the Carver Center pool. Up to 10 people in each class will take part in a circuit of supervised exercise on various pieces of aqua workout equipment – it even includes an underwater treadmill and mini trampoline. “We’re also introducing an AquaDynamic class; it’s a group program set to music that will emphasize strength-building moves using the resistance of the water,” says Georges. Stay physically active The summer is a great time to play outdoor games, garden, or walk. Start a new routine that combines fun and physical activity. Active people are less likely than inactive people to be obese or to have high blood pressure, diabetes, osteoporosis, coronary artery disease and stroke, depression, colon cancer, premature death. Tips Adults should get 30 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity daily. Children and adolescents should participate in at least 60 minutes of moderateintensity physical activity daily. Start at an easy pace and increase time and distance gradually. Don't overdo it. Prevent injuries.
Stay cool Sun protection is important all year round, not just during the summer or at the beach. Take steps to help prevent skin cancer and other conditions. Heat-related deaths and illness are preventable, yet many people succumb to extreme heat each year.
Lower your risk for heat-related illness.
Tips When possible, avoid outdoor activities during midday, when the sun's rays are strongest. Cover up with clothing and a wide-brimmed hat to protect exposed skin. Drink plenty of cool, non-alcoholic fluids.Seek shade. Wear sunscreen and lip screen with a sun protective factor (SPF) of 15 or higher.
Watch the water According to several studies, males are three times more likely than females to die from unintentional drownings in the United States. Alcohol use is involved in up to half of adolescent and adult deaths associated with water recreation.
Tips: Learn how to swim. Never swim alone.
Wear your life jacket while boating. Avoid alcoholic beverages while boating. Watch children in and around water. If you have a swimming pool at your home, install a four-sided isolation pool fence.
Eat healthy Whether you plan to grill on the patio or picnic in the park, be sure to eat balanced meals with fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables have important vitamins, minerals, and fiber that may protect you from some chronic diseases. Foodborne disease is caused by consuming contaminated foods or beverages. An estimated 76 million cases of foodborne disease occur each year in the United States. Most of these cases are mild and cause symptoms for a day or two, but some cases are more serious and require hospitalization. Tips: Eat plenty fruits and vegetables daily. Wash your hands before eating or preparing food. Cook all foods to the proper temperatures. Refrigerate foods promptly. Handle and prepare food safely.
Healthy lifestyle can prevent high blood pressure in kids

Healthcare News - Fairfield County June, 2016
Despite popular belief, teens, children, and even babies, can have high blood pressure, also called HBP or hypertension. It's not just a disease for the middleaged and elderly. As with adults, early diagnosis and treatment can reduce or prevent harmful consequences like heart and kidney disease—even stroke. The American Heart Association/American Stroke Association encourages parents to prevent high blood pressure in children with healthy lifestyle choices started at a young age. The number of American children with high blood pressure is on the rise, and about 1 in 6 children ages 8-17 years already has raised blood pressure. Lowering blood pressure during childhood can help lower the risk for high blood pressure as an adult. When it comes to blood pressure in children, "normal" is relative. It depends on three factors: gender, age and height. Doctors can guide parents on what is a healthy number in their child. As in adults, HBP in children is typically managed with lifestyle
changes like enjoying a hearthealthy diet, participating in regular physical activity, and managing weight. The doctor may also prescribe medication if an appropriate diet and regular physical activity don't bring high blood pressure under control. What causes HBP in children? There may be many factors including diseases including heart and kidney disease, some medications, family history, diet, excess weight or obesity, or race, particularly for African-American children. Eating too much sodium is associated with higher blood pressure in children and teens, and the effect is even greater if they’re overweight or obese. Kids with high-sodium diets are almost 40 percent more likely to have elevated blood pressure than kids with lower-sodium diets. The American Heart Association recommends 1,500 mg of sodium a day for all Americans for ideal heart health. On average, kids ages 2-19 eat more than 3,100 mg sodium per day, about double the amount the American
Heart Association recommends. In the 2-19 year-old age group for boys and girls, boys ages 1219 eat the most sodium — an average of 4,220 mg/day. Girls in the 12-19 year-old age group eat about 2,950 mg/day. Taste preferences for salt are shaped by what kids eat early in life, according to the AHA. From an early age, parents should avoid the “Salty Six” foods that add the most sodium to kids’ diets including pizza; bread and rolls; cold cuts and cured meats; packaged snacks; sandwiches; and cheese. The AHA wants to help parents to give their children the best possible start to a healthy life. Learn more about preventing and man-

Go Red For Women Luncheon targets Women’s & Family Health PAGE 18
The American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women Luncheon and Health and Wellness Expo, entitled “Building Healthier Families,” was held on Wednesday, May 4th at the Stamford Marriott Hotel & Spa. More than 300 people, mostly women dressed in red, attended to learn more about heart disease and stroke prevention, and to support survivors. This year’s keynote speaker was Connecticut-based David Katz, MD, MPH, FACPM, FACP, an internationally recognized authority on nutrition, weight management and the prevention of chronic disease. Katz asked the audience to raise their hand if they knew someone affected by heart disease, then another hand if they someone affected by stroke. Nearly everyone in the room raised their hands. Katz told the audience that more than 80% of heart disease and stroke incidence could be prevented with their “feet, forks and fingers,” encouraging the crowd to make healthy lifestyle choices like exercising more, eating healthier and quitting smoking. He also spoke of the epidemic of childhood obesity and serious health consequences

from it, including childhood diabetes, high cholesterol, hypertension and, yes, even stroke. “Is there anything more unconscionable than a stroke in a child?” said Katz to a stunned audience when he presented statistics showing stroke on the rise in children and young adults. May is American Stroke Month and the audience was reminded to learn the F.A.S.T. stroke symptoms by Lauren Scala, NBC 4 New York traffic reporter, who served as event emcee. “If you see F-Face drooping, A-Arm weakness or S-Speech difficulty, it’s T-Time to call 9-11 if any of these symptoms exist.” Heart health breakout sessions were presented by Greenwich Hospital and Stamford Health where women were provided with the tools, resources and inspiration to prevent women’s number one killer—heart disease. Several local women were featured in two videos shown at the event. All are survivors or either heart disease or stroke. Selina Santos, of Wilton, was diagnosed with high blood pressure and aortic insufficiency at age 34. She visited doctors who diagnosed her

constant headaches and shortness of breath to be stress-related, and told her to lighten her work load. When she was finally diagnosed with aortic insufficiency, leakage of the aortic valve, her doctor gave her a choice of “lifestyle change or surgery,” she chose lifestyle change and is now a spin-class instructor. “It’s been my mission to create a healthier lifestyle for others,” she said. Her message to other women, even young women is to “not ignore the signs! What may seem like stress may be an underlying cause of a more serious issue. Put yourself first—it is not selfish, it’s necessary!” Cindy King of Stamford, a heart attack survivor, was also featured in the video. Patty Macias, of New Rochelle, survived pulmonary embolism because her sister recognized heart attack symptoms early and got her to the emergency room quickly. Massalla Samuel, Elmsford, and Beverly Paige of Pomona, were two stroke survivors featured in the films. They both survived and thrived—graduating top of their classes in college.
Martha Glantz of Mount Kisco, had a heart attack at a Super Bowl party. She thought she had indigestion. But when it got worse and dizziness set in, she knew she needed to go to the hospital. “I always thought heart disease only happened to men. I want all women to know it can happen to you,” said Glantz. Women can learn about preventing heart disease and stroke at www.goredforwomen.org.

Hernias: A Common Ailment
PAGE 19
Healthcare News - Fairfield County June, 2016
According to the National Center for Health Statistics, some five million Americans have a hernia. Yet, only about 750,000 Americans seek treatment each year. The balance do not because they perceive surgery, the only way to treat a hernia, to be an inconvenience to their daily lifestyle and those around them. Others perceive surgery to be a major invasive procedure that requires an extended hospital stay, followed by a long and painful period of recovery. Fortunately for patients and their physicians, there are a variety of safe, simple and quick surgical procedures that can eliminate these worries in some patients and have them back to their daily activities in very little time. Hernia repairs are common, and routine surgical procedures, tools and technologies have evolved accordingly. These days, many hernia repairs are typically performed: • in an outpatient setting at a hospital or at an ambulatory surgery center • using local or epidural anesthesia instead of general anesthesia • through one small incision • within 45 minutes • without the need for pain medication • with patients going home a few hours after surgery • with patients returning to normal activities within a few days
Discover the Facts A hernia can be uncomfortable, unsightly, painful and even cause life threatening complications. Don't let a hernia restrict you and keep you from the activities you enjoy. Take a few minutes here and learn more about hernias and their treatment. Then, be sure to see your physician for an evaluation to help safeguard your health and comfort.

Migraine consequences affect all family members Healthcare News - Fairfield County June, 2016
New findings validate profound effect on relationships, parenting and financial security
The debilitating pain and disability of migraine also attacks the emotional, social and financial fabric of a family, according to a new study conducted by researchers at Montefiore Headache Center, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, affiliated with the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, Vedanta Research, the Mayo Clinic and Allergan plc. The findings were published today in Volume 91, Issue 5 of Mayo Clinic Proceedings. The Chronic Migraine Epidemiology and Outcomes (CaMEO) Study surveyed 4,022 people with migraine as well as their spouses or domestic partners to gain a full picture of the effect of migraine on the family. Approximately 41% of people with migraine and 23% of spouses stated that they believed those impacted by migraine would be better parents if they did not have migraine, which consequently led to half of migraineurs missing at least one family activity in the past month. Approximately one-third of people with migraine and 21% of their spouses/partners endorsed worries about long-term financial security for their family due to migraine. Perceived burden was the greatest among people with chronic migraine (migraine with headache on 15 or more days per month) and among those with more frequent attacks. “This study highlights the significant burden that migraine can have on a wide range of family activities, parenting responsibilities, spousal relationships and family finances,” said study lead author Dawn C. Buse, Ph.D., director of Behavioral Medicine, Montefiore Headache Center and associate professor of neurology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. “Respondents with migraine and their partners noted a great deal of emotional distress related to how this condition affects their family member including guilt, worry and sadness. These findings underscore the challenges and negative impact that people with migraine and their family members’ experience.” The CaMEO Study is a U.S. web-panel study that gathered information on the perceived impact of migraine—episodic or chronic-- on people with migraine, their partners and their children by surveying each of the three types of respondents from September 2012 to November 2013. As the study authors point out, an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment are essential to reducing the overall burden of migraine. “The consequences of migraine can be devastating and far-reaching for people with migraine and their families,” said Richard B. Lipton, M.D., director of Montefiore Headache Center and vice chair of neurology, and the Edwin S. Lowe Chair in Neurology, Albert Einstein College of Medicine. “As a next step, we are analyzing responses from the children of those with migraine, who are 13 and older. We are also developing the “Impact of Migraine on Partners and Children Scale (IMPACS)” to help quantify the family burden of migraine.
PAGE 21
We hope that improved diagnosis, treatment and enhanced recognition of the burden associated with migraine leads to better outcomes for all family members,” concluded Dr. Lipton, who is the study Primary Investigator. Additional study authors include Ann I. Scher, Ph.D., Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, David W. Dodick, M.D., Mayo Clinic in Phoenix Arizona, Michael L. Reed, Ph.D., Vedanta Research, Kristina M. Fanning, Ph.D., Vedanta Research, Aubrey Manack Adams, Ph.D., Allergan plc and Richard B. Lipton, M.D., Montefiore/Einstein. Funding for the Chronic Migraine Epidemiology and Outcomes (CaMEO) study was provided by Allergan plc.

“Back Pain Technology Cheats Mother Nature
After helping hundreds of Fairfield County herniated disc sufferers eliminate their pain, Local Doctor explains how…
Helps Herniated Discs Heal Naturally… In As Little As 25 Minutes!” At Last! Fairfield County Doctor Offers Technology That Doesn’t Just End SEVERE Pain From Herniated Discs, But Helps Your Body To Start Rebuilding Them… As Fast As Humanly Possible! Best Part: You can check it all out for FREE if you like!
There is no doubt… technology has made all of our lives better… and easier. Just about every miraculous medical cure and comfort of modern living can be attributed to amazing breakthroughs in technology. Heck, laser eye surgery can give people who are almost as blind as a bat perfect 20/20 vision. How amazing is that? That’s why it’s no surprise that technology might be able to solve your back and neck pain from herniated/bulging discs or sciatica…for good. Here is why: Back and neck pain can be devastating. And nothing is worse than going to doctor after doctor… trying treatment after treatment… spending money you can’t afford… and still suffering in pain. That’s why… I bet you would love to instantly end your pain… without any risk what-soever… and have it never come back for the rest of your life? Well, that might NOT be so easy. But, what if there was a wonderful advancement in technology that, with a handful of simple, non-invasive treatments, could possibly have you out of pain and on your way to healing naturally? Better yet, what if this technology could possibly heal your herniated/bulging discs (instead of cutting it out like surgery) so you have the best chance to live pain-free and do all the things you want and love to do? And what if this technology was: • FDA cleared! • Proven safe and effective! • Allows your herniated discs to heal naturally without the risky and dangerous side effects of surgery! • Relieves pain fast… in some cases in as little as 25 minutes! Well, guess what? There is such technology and there is a very good chance it can help you… like it has already helps thousands of herniated/bulging disc and sciatica sufferers all around the country… No Matter How Bad Your Pain Is, How Long You’ve Been Suffering Or How Many Other Treatments And Doctors Have Failed You! Don’t laugh. It’s really true. Here’s proof…
When you have a herniated disc, compressive forces cause your spinal bones to come together… basically squashing your disc. The space in between your bones decreases and the soft, jello-like disc material leaks out. This disc material that leaks out is called a herniated disc and can cause severe pain, numbness and tingling in your neck, back, arms or legs when the herniation pushes into and “pinches” a nerve. So it makes sense, if you could slightly pull the spinal bones apart… that would open up the space, take the pressure off the disc, the disc off the nerve and solve the problem. Right? But the only problem is… how do you do that? For years and years, doctors have been trying to do it with traction. But traction has been proven ineffective and often very painful. Why? Traction doesn’t work because when you have a herniated or bulging disc, the area is injured and when you try to move, your muscles go into spasm. Spasm is your body’s way of trying to protect you from causing further injury. That’s why traction hurts so much. As soon as the traction starts… your muscles overprotect the area and spasm. But the good news is: Now there is technology that out-smarts your body’s natural spasm reaction. In other words: It fools mother nature! This technology is called non-surgical spinal decompression (NSSD) and here’s how it works… NSSD is very different from plain traction because it has advanced computer technology that actually senses your spinal muscles. When it starts to gently pull, it immediately knows when your muscles start to contract and it stops pulling. As soon as your muscles relax, it starts pulling again. The amazing thing is: the computer senses your muscles contraction so early… you don’t even feel what is going on. Which means you never feel any pain! In fact, the only thing most patients feel is… RELIEF!!! But the best part is: NSSD is able to gently separate your spinal bones which, in many cases, actually sucks the herniated disc material back into the disc where it belongs! This takes away your pain and allows your herniated and bulging discs to heal naturally!
And check this out: Treatments are pleasant and simple. All you have to do is lie on your back, listen to your favorite music, read a magazine… or… take a nap! The wonderful technology does everything while you simply RELAX the pain away! To sum up NSSD: • For most patients it is 100% painless… in fact many patients actually fall asleep during treatment! • Works fast! Most patients get relief after a handful of treatments – some after the very first! • Is non-invasive so it does not have the dangerous risks of surgery! • Gets to the root cause of the problem and helps it heal naturally! Isn’t modern technology wonderful? And wouldn’t you like to… Give This Great Technology A Try… For Free? If you would, there’s great news. There is a Doctor located at 222 Westchester Ave. Suite 405 in White Plains who has invested hundreds of thousands of dollars in this wonderful technology and has been treating herniated/bulging disc and sciatica patients with incredible success. His name is Dr. Jonathan Donath DC, MS and he is so excited about the results he’s been getting, he would like to share it with as many pain sufferers as possible. But There Is A Catch… There’s always a catch... isn’t there? Even though this technology has helped a majority of the patients Dr. Donath has treated… it is not a wonder cure and it does not help everyone.
On the right: healthy disc. Center: Herniated disc with soft disc material leaking out. On the left: Herniated disc material compressing or “pinching” nerve.
For that reason, Dr. Donath does a complete examination on every potential patient and only accepts you if he feels you are most likely to get the pain relief and outcome you are looking for. Dr. Donath’s Special Deal For You! Because the economy is so bad and Dr. Donath wants to help you if possible, he is offering the first 17 people who respond to this article a free consultation and NSSD qualification examination. And if you qualify for NSSD treatments, Dr. Donath will also give you one treatment for FREE! And if you do not qualify, Dr. Donath will help you find the best option for you. That’s why, if you suffer with pain from a herniated/bulging disc or sciatica you should call 914-259-8104 right now. When April answers the phone, simply tell her you would like your free non-surgical spinal decompression consultation and examination. If you are one of the first 17, she will schedule you within the next few days. If you are in a lot of pain or already scheduled for surgery, tell April and she will be sure to get you in immediately. Maybe even today.
On right: Herniated disc with spinal bones “squished” together. Center: NSSD slightly pulls the spinal bones apart, opens up the disc space and allows herniated material to move back into the disc. Left: Herniated material completely back in center of disc allows the disc to heal naturally. Your consultation and examination should take about 60 minutes. During this time you can get all of your questiones answered in a warm and friendly environment. You will know exactly what’s causing your pain and the best possible way to solve it. Dr. Donath will explain to you all your possible options along with his recomendations so you can make the best choice for YOU.
Why Limited To 17? Dr. Donath has limited the number he will accept right now to 17 because he does not believe patients should wait and they should also get the quality personal attention they deserve. When you go for your free visit, I’m sure you will see how unique and pleasant the experience is. It’s nice to be treated like a person and not a number or based on insurance coverage. It’s also nice to know exactly what’s causing your pain and how to relieve it as fast as possible. Dr. Donath’s favorite cases are the one’s that were able to cancel back surgery after only a handful of treatments. Dr. Donath also loves when a herniated disc patient that is in excruciating pain and thinks they’ve tried everything, lays down on the NSSD table, takes a 25 minute nap… and… wakes up with all their pain GONE! Just imagine how it would feel to have all your pain finally gone. Imagine going to bed and being able to sleep the entire night through… … and waking up refreshed and energized… ready to take on the brand new day – without the pain and stiffness that has been terrorizing you. And imagine finally knowing you have the solution to your herniated disc pain. Well, you may not have to just “imagine” anymore… because… NSSD might start relieving your pain… in just 25 minutes! So, if you’d like to see if you qualify and give this amazing technology a try for free… give April a call at 914-259-8104 right now. Why wait one more day in pain when the solution may be one quick phone call away? Call now before someone else gets your free spot. One More Thing It’s Important… Ever since getting this wonderful technology, Dr. Donath’s office has been flooded with calls. For that reason, if when you call, the lines are busy or you go to voice mail… just keep calling back. The possibility of living pain-free is well worth the time and effort it may take you to get through and schedule your appointment. 914-259-8104
