Popular food store burns in Queens blaze Queens, NY - Strawberry Farms, a neighborhood staple in the Whitestone section of Queens, was gutted in a three-alarm fire on August 2nd, taking two additional businesses with it, but not spreading to nearby homes. B a t t a l i o n - 5 2 JUMP TO FILE# transmitted the “All- 080516100 Hands” on arrival, shortly after 9:00 P.M., for a fire in the rear of a one-story, 140’ X 75’ masonry building, housing a food store, a laundry mat and a dry cleaner. The fire was located in the “C – D” corner and extending. An additional one-and-one was immediately summoned, followed shortly after by a request for another tower ladder. Flames were breaking through the roof and a second-alarm was transmitted at 9:20 P.M. Flames intensifying and a ceiling collapse prompted a “Mayday" call. All members were withdrawn, a roll call was conducted, and the Mayday was cleared. Members were also removed from the roof as it began to sag. An exterior attack was commenced with two tower ladders on the “A” side, and one tower each on the “B” and “D” sides. Lines were also put into operation on all sides, including the “C” side, to protect several private dwellings. Flames slowly worked their way through the three occupancies in the structure over several hours. A third-alarm was called at 1:13 A.M. for relief purposes. Many of the relocated companies began to be released. Companies remained on the scene well into the morning, hitting hot spots. Four firefighters were reported to have received minor injuries, but no civilian injuries were reported. Strawberry Farms had closed one hour earlier, and was not occupied at the time of the fire. The fire is currently under investigation.

Five-alarms needed for fast spreading blaze in Queens Queens, NY - On the evening of Thursday, July 21st, at approximately 9:30 P.M., Queens companies turned out to 18-11 College Point Boulevard for a report of a fire in a multiple-dwelling structure. From a block away, JUMP TO FILE# Engine-297 trans- 072216110 mitted a 10-75 for a fire on the top-floor of a three-story, mixed occupancy building. A secondalarm was quickly transmitted due to the fire rapidly spreading to the exposed "two" and "four" buildings. Heavy fire was located on the top-floor and cockloft of the original fire building. Multiple lines were stretched and put into operation. A third-alarm was transmitted shortly after due to the fire having spread into the three buildings. Fourth and fifthalarms were transmitted and the fire was eventually knocked down. The incident was placed under control with an approximate four-and-one-half hour duration. - JOHN HOPPER

Ground broken on new Brooklyn firehouse Brooklyn, NY - On July 28th, FDNY Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro and New York City Department of Design and Construction Commissioner Dr. Feniosky PeùaMora broke ground on a new firehouse for Rescue 2 in JUMP TO FILE# Brooklyn. The planned 081016101 21K, square-foot facility provides parking for multiple apparatus, as well as ample space for tools and workshops, SCUBA equipment storage, locker rooms, fitness equipment and training. The entire firehouse has been designed with training in mind, including specific areas for trench rescue and confined space rescue training, a room to simulate the smoke-filled environments in which Firefighters operate, and an elevated area that allows Firefighters to train to rappel from the roof of a building to perform a rescue. The construction plans continue the Department’s goal of sustainable and energy efficient facilities, with several green elements incorporated into the design; including a solar water heating system, 100% LED lighting with motion sensors to reduce electricity usage, and a green roof to help mitigate storm water runoff from the site. The total cost
for construction and design is $32 million. Rescue Company 2 was formed in 1925 to establish special rescue capability in the borough of Brooklyn. Originally located at 160 Carlton Avenue, the current home of Rescue Company 2 is at

1472 Bergen Street. The company is staffed daily by five Firefighters and one officer and responds to emergencies throughout the borough, and into neighboring boroughs, as needed.

Queens car fire extends into building Queens, NY- On July 15th, firefighters responded to a car on fire that was in close proximity to a neighboring building. The fire extended into the building and two lines were used to knock it down.

Second-alarm fire on roof in Bronx
Bronx, NY - On Monday, July 25th at approximately 8:15 A.M., Bronx Companies turned out to Montefiore Hospital, located at 600 East 233rd Street, for a Class-3 alarm activation. Bronx dispatchers received a call for a fire at 4141 Carpenter Avenue, which is located on the Montefiore campus. Battalion-15 arrived on scene with first-due companies Engine-63 and Ladder-39, and transmitted a 10-75 for a fire on the roof of a four-story, multiple dwelling building. Allhands were put to work, an additional engine and truck were requested, and shortly after, a second-alarm was transmitted. The fire was quickly knocked down and the incident was placed under control with an approximate 30minute duration.

Queens, NY - Units responded to a structure fire on August 3rd at a woodworking shop, located at the corner of 37th Street and Queens Blvd. Seven tower ladders and six hand-lines were used to knock the fire down. Officials reported that 250 firefighters were called to the scene to battle the blaze. Four firefighters suffered minor injuries, but there were no civilian injuries. The fire was declared under control just after 11:20 P.M.

All-Hands needed for Bronx blaze

Queens, NY - In July of 1947, a fire broke out at a storage facility located in Queens Village. The building sustained minimal damage. Shown in the photograph is FDNY Engine-304, a 1939 Ahrens Fox "HT" Model.
Bronx, NY - On Monday, August 8th at approximately 12:45 P.M., Bronx companies responded to 735 Mace Avenue, at Boston Road, for a report of a fire in a multiple dwelling structure. Ladder-32 arrived on-scene as first-due and transmitted a 10-75 for a fire on the first-floor of a six-story multiple dwelling. The fire was located on the first-floor in the rear shaft. All-Hands were put to work upon arrival of the 27thBattalion, while an extra engine and truck were requested. Two lines were stretched and the fire was quickly knocked down. The incident was placed under control with an approximate 40-minute duration.

9/11 victim FDNY Battalion Chief Lawrence T. Stack laid to rest Saint James, NY - “I know my husband and one thing is for sure. He called me before he went in, and if he had a beating heart, he would have called me and told me that he was okay. When I didn’t hear from him, I knew that day that he was never coming JUMP TO FILE# home. And he never 081016111 did.” – Theresa Stack, widow of FDNY Battalion Chief and U.S. Navy Veteran Lawrence T. Stack, who was killed on September 11, 2001, in the attacks on the World Trade Center. Chief Stack’s remains were laid to rest on June 17th, following a funeral mass in St. James, New York. “We’ve always honored him, respected him, loved him, and we never forgot him. But now he will rest with the members of the FDNY and the Military at the Calverton National Cemetery. I’m happy, and my family is happy, that we finally have some place to go to. I want Larry’s story to be out there so people don’t forget that there are families still suffering from that terrible day. If this could help even one other family know that they’re not for-
gotten and they’ll never be forgotten, this public funeral mass is worth it. My heart goes out to everyone that day who lost someone in their lives.” Firefighter Brian Stack from Ladder-123, currently detailed to Rescue-4 and son of Chief Lawrence Stack said, “I understood what happened on September 11th because it’s work, it’s the Fire Department. Danger is always right
around the corner. It’s part of the job. I was 30-years-old when he died, and I know that I’m lucky that I got more time with my father than some of the men and women coming on the job now. They were much younger when they lost their fathers. We were fortunate to have so many years with him in our lives.” FDNY

Four firefighters injured in Bronx four-alarm Bronx, NY - On Tuesday, August 9th at approximately 12:30 P.M., Bronx Fire Alarm dispatchers received a call for a fire in a private dwelling, located at 636 East 235 Street, between Carpenter Avenue and White Plains Road. Due to another JUMP TO FILE# box already out in 080916122 the area, companies were responding from further away until closer companies became available and were able to respond. Engine-63 transmitted a 10-75 for a large column of smoke on the horizon. All-hands were put to work upon arrival on the 15-Battalion, while an additional engine and truck were requested. The fire quickly spread to both the exposure "two" and "four" sides, requiring the transmission of a second-alarm and shortly after, a third-alarm. The fire building was a two-and-a-half story, flat roof, wood frame structure. The fire quickly spread into the cockloft and also to the exposure "four" side, into the "4A" and "4B" buildings. A fourth-alarm was transmitted for additional manpower. Four firefighters were injured in the fire but are expected to be alright. The fire was placed under control with an approximate three-hour duration. - JOHN HOPPER
