Cockloft Fire in Brooklyn Quickly Knocked Down Brooklyn, NY - On October 25th, it took firefighters five lines to knock down a fire in a three-story structure, located at 155 Powers St., C/S Graham Ave. The fire was found mostly in the duct work, with some extension to the cockloft.

All-Hands House Fire in South Jamaica Queens, NY - Numerous calls came in on October 2nd for a fire located on 133rd Avenue, off 144th Street. Box-8907 was transmitted, but short of its typical first-due units since they were already operating at another box. Reports of people trapped followed while Queens Dispatch promptly "Loaded up the box," assigning units that typically would
JUMP TO FILE #100716119 go on the 10-75. Engine-302 and Ladder-155 became available and took in their normally assigned box. They arrived in front of the fire building with smoke showing. Engine-302 gave the 10-75. A mem-
ber of L155 made entry through a window on the second-floor while Engine-302 stretched in the first line. Fire was located on the second-floor in a rear bedroom but luckily, everyone made it out safely. Engine companies made a quick knock down and all searches were negative. - RICHIE YORK

Stove Fire in Queens Sends One to Hospital Queens, NY - On October 22nd, units responded to 64th St. and Catalpa Ave. for reports of a fire in a two-story brick structure. Upon arrival, fire was found on the first-floor coming from a kitchen stove, with extension to the cabinets. One line was used to knock it down and one male was removed from the structure and transported to a local hospital with minor burns.

New York, NY - Battalion Chief Jack Calderone recently retired after serving 43 years of dedicated service to the New York City Fire Department and to the people of New York. Chief Calderone served in every borough of New York City, starting as a firefighter at Engine-290 in Brooklyn before rising in rank to serve as a Lieutenant and then Captain in various fire rescue companies. Chief Calderone's last position was Chief of the 22nd Battalion, located at Ladder -79's quarters on Castleton Ave. Over 300 guests came to the retirement party, including Chief of Department James Leonard. Rope Rescue Used at Manhattan Sixth-Alarm Manhattan, NY - As flames closed in on a trapped elderly resident, firefighters at the scene of a heavily involved Upper East Side tenement used a rope rescue to save the man from a probable fatal outcome on October 27th. Shortly before 3:30 A.M., Manhattan Dispatch sent a full assignment to 324 E. 93rd St. for JUMP TO FILE# multiple reports of 102716110 a fire. The box was “loaded up” due to people on the fire escapes. Engine-53 transmitted the “1075” at 3:27 A.M., followed with a second-alarm by Battalion-10 at 3:33 A.M. Heavy fire on the firstfloor was extending up through the five-story attached tenement. Three lines were stretched as members made searches on all floors. A third-alarm was sounded at 3:41 A.M., followed by a fourth at 3:53 A.M. Two injured residents were located on the second-floor and removed, one with serious burns. An 81-year-old occupant was observed in a fifth-floor window, with no means of escape. A firefighter from Rescue-1 was lowered via rope from the roof to the man and they were brought to the ground. The rope began to burn shortly after they were at ground level. One resident from the second-floor did not make it out. At 4:09 A.M., conditions continued to deteriorate and all members were withdrawn from the fire building. Multiple Multiversals and handlines were put into service from the front and rear of the structure, as well as a tower ladder. Flames extended to both exposures, but members were able to open up and keep fire damage to a minimum. At 4:29 A.M., a fifth-alarm was transmitted, followed by a sixth-alarm at 5:09 A.M. Flames were slowly knocked down from the first-floor up. Fire continued to consume the fifth-floor and roof until the fire was able to be placed as “probably will hold” at 6:32 A.M. Eighteen families were left homeless. Seven firefighters and four additional civilians received minor injuries.

Firefighters Battle All-Hands Fire in Bronx Bronx, NY - On the early morning of Friday, October 28th, Bronx Fire Companies responded to 130 West 183rd Street at Sedgwick Avenue for a reported structure fire on the seventh-floor. Battalion-19 arrived on-scene with first-due units Engine-43 and Ladder-59 and transmitted a 10-75 for a fire located in apartment 7E on the top floor of a seven-story, multiple dwelling structure. Two lines were stretched and the fire was quickly knocked down. A hole was cut in the roof to check for any fire in the cockloft, but the result was negative. The incident was placed under control with an approximate 45 minute duration.

Late Night Queens Fire Goes to Three Alarms Queens, NY - On October 1st, firefighters were dispatched to 102-17 Atlantic Ave. for reports of a structure fire. Upon arrival, a third-alarm was transmitted for fire that was deep seated in a motor vehicle repair shop in Richmond Hill. Initial companies witnessed flames up to 30-feet through the roof and in the air. The fire spread into Exposures 2 and 3, an occupied private dwelling, before being placed under control.

Crews Knock Down Attic Fire in Queens Queens, NY - On October 14th, crews responded to 69th St. and Garfield Ave. for reports of a structure fire. Upon arrival, the fire was found in the attic of a two-story frame structure. Two lines were used to knock it down.

Bronx Battles All-Hands Structure Fire Bronx, NY - On the evening of Sunday, October 16th at approximately 7:10 P.M., Bronx companies turned out to 1420 Williamsbridge Road for a reported commercial building on fire. Bronx Fire Alarm dispatchers received multiple calls, all reporting a store fire. Squad-61 arrived onscene as first-due and transmitted a 10-75 for a fire on the first-floor of a two-story commercial building. Two lines were stretched and put into operation, knocking down the main body of fire. The fire slightly extended into Exposure-2 while an engine and truck (E90/TL50) were requested. Three Alarm Apartment Fire in West Village
Manhattan, NY - Crews were dispatched on October 26th for reports of a fire located at Jane St. and Washington St. Upon arrival, units found fire coming from the fourth-floor and extending up to the fifth-floor in a six bedroom dwelling containing apartments. The fire went to three alarms before it was knocked down by using four lines.

Occupants Escape Apartment Fire in Bronx
Bronx, NY - Battalion-15 used All-Hands for a structure fire located at 4755 White Plains Rd. on November 1st. Fire was found in an apartment on the second-floor of a six-story, 150X75, mixed occupancy building. As smoke spread throughout the building, some occupants climbed onto their fire escapes, while others evacuated the building by using the staircase. Only one victim was transported to the hospital in stable condition, while two other green tag patients were evaluated at the scene.

One Dead After Three-Alarm Structure Fire in Brooklyn
Brooklyn, NY - Firefighters were dispatched to Lincoln Ave. and McKinley Ave. on November 1st for reports of a structure fire. Upon arrival, units found a three-story, vacant dwelling that was well involved, with fire extending to Exposure-2. A third-alarm was requested. Four lines were used to knock down the fire, as well as two tower ladders and one deck gun. The top floor of the fire building collapsed and one civilian's body was later found, having perished in the fire.

Thomas Peccia from Ladder-2 was awarded the title of "Best FDNY Chef," while Peter Acton of Engine-79 was awarded second place. Nick Foley of Ladder-30 was awarded third place. All proceeds from the cook-off benefit the Museum’s fire safety education programs.

Dog Rescued From Two-Alarm House Fire Queens, NY - On October 28th, firefighters responded to Beach 68th Street and Elizabeth Ave. for reports of a structure fire. Upon arrival, units found fire on the second and third floors as well as in the attic of a large house. A second-alarm was called. A dog was pulled out of the building and expected to be okay. Four lines and one tower were used to knock the fire down.
Diesel Fuel Leak Causes Hazmat in Queens Queens, NY - Crews responded to 71st St. and Myrtle Ave. on November 2nd for reports of a Hazmat incident. Upon arrival, 50-gallons of diesel fuel was found leaking from a truck. Units put absorbent down to clean up the fuel.
