Second-Alarm Fire in Bronx Liquor Store Bronx, NY - On the early morning of Saturday, September 17th, South Bronx companies responded to 1442 University Avenue for a report of smoke coming from a liquor store. Battalion-13 arrived on-scene with the first-due units Engine-68 and Ladder-49, and transmitted a 10-75 for fire found on the first-floor of a one-

way to the cockloft, requiring the transmission of a second-alarm by the orders of Division-6. The fire in the cockloft was quickly knocked down, preventing the fire from spreading to adjoining structures. The fire was placed under control with an approximate one hour duration. - JOHN HOPPER

Fire in Brooklyn Engulfs Basement Brooklyn, NY - On September 20th, units responded for reports of a fire located at Morgan Ave. and Harrison Place. Upon arrival, the fire was found in the basement of a threestory frame structure. Two lines were used to knock it down.

North Bronx Companies Respond to Basement Fire
Bronx, NY - On the afternoon of Saturday, September 24th, North Bronx companies turned out to 681 East 239th Street, between White Plains Road and Richardson Avenue, for a report of a fire in the basement of a private dwelling. Battalion-15 arrived on-scene with first-due units Engine-63 and Ladder-39 to find smoke coming from the basement windows of a two-story, 20x40 flat roof, multiple dwelling, and transmitted a 10-75. Two lines were stretched and put into operation and the fire was quickly knocked down. All searches were completed and found negative. The fire was placed under control with an approximate 30 minute duration.

Battalion Chief Killed in Bronx House Explosion Bronx, NY - An FDNY Battalion Chief tragically died after an explosion in the Bronx on the morning of September 27th. Chief Michael Fahy, 37, was injured by flying debris after an JUMP TO FILE# alleged drug lab in 092816100 a house caused a massive explosion, tearing the roof off the home. NYPD officers that were on the scene could not wait for EMS, so they placed the injured Chief into the back of a patrol car and transported him to a local hospital, where he later passed. Chief Fahy was a 17-year FDNY veteran and was the father of two boys and a girl, all under 11-years-old. Also injured was a sergeant and three officers from the 50 Pct.

Second-Alarm Structure Fire in Bronx
Bronx, NY - On the morning of Monday, September 26th, Bronx Companies responded to 66 Van Courtlandt Park South for reports of a fire on the fourth-floor of a multipledwelling structure. Responding companies were redirected to 74 Van Courtlandt Park South, which wound up being the correct address. Companies arrived on-scene to find fire coming out of the top floor window of a five-story, multipledwelling structure. A 10-75 was transmitted and quickly after, a second-alarm was also transmitted. Two lines were stretched and put into operation. The fire was quickly knocked down and the incident was placed under control with an approximate 45 minute duration.

One Firefighter Injured at Vacant House Fire Brooklyn, NY - Firefighters were dispatched to Hill St. and Autumn Ave. on September 21st for reports of a structure fire. Upon arrival, units found heavy fire coming from both the first and second floors of a vacant house. Fire began to extend into the attic and a second-alarm was struck. Three lines were used to knock the fire down. One firefighter suffered a minor injury while on-scene.

Four People Hurt in Queens Auto Shop Fire Queens, NY - Crews responded to 102nd Street and Altaitac Ave. on October 1st for reports of a fire inside of an auto shop. Upon arrival, units confirmed that the fire had extended to two private homes. Five lines were used to knock the fire down, with two tower ladders on-scene. Four people were hurt, with minor injuries reported.

All-Hands Needed for Bronx Fish Market Fire
Bronx, NY - On the afternoon of Tuesday, September 27th, Bronx Companies responded to 15 East Mount Eden Avenue at Jerome Avenue for a reported store fire. Companies arrived on-scene to find fire in a Fish Market. The building was a one-story, 100x60 Taxpayer. All-Hands were put to work and the fire was quickly knocked down. The incident was placed under control with an approximate 25 minute duration.

Small Fire Found in Queens Commercial Building Queens, NY - On September 26th, firefighters responded to 49th Street and Grand Ave. for reports of a small fire in a commercial building. The fire was found on the second-floor and one line was used to knock it down. One male suffered minor smoke inhalation.

Fire in Queens Food Plant Queens, NY - On September 28th, firefighters responded to 157th Street and Rockaway Blvd. for reports of a fire. Commercial Building in Queens Goes to Two-Alarms Queens, NY - The night tour had just begun when Box-4983 was transmitted on September 30th. Engine-302 arrived first-due and transmitted the 10-75 for fire in a commercial building located at 144-02 158th Street, off of Rockaway Blvd. Battalion-54 arrived and put All-Hands to work for fire

Two Vehicle MVA in Staten Island Sends One to Hospital Staten Island, NY - On Tuesday, August 9th at approximately 11:00 A.M., 911 dispatchers started receiving calls reporting an MVA with serious injuries outside of a fruit market located at Bay Street and Sylvaton Place. Units responded and found that a vehicle had slammed into another after making a U-Turn. The occupant was transported to Richmond University and listed in stable condition.

Two-Alarms Needed for Six-Story Dwelling Fire Queens, NY - Units responded to 89th Ave. and 162nd St. on October 3rd for reports of a fire in a six-story, multiple dwelling. Upon arrival, firefighters found fire on the third-floor and called for a second-alarm. Three lines were used to knock it down. The fire was reported to have been started by an emotionally disturbed person who was in the apartment.

5-5-5 Firefighter Fitness Part II: The “How” By now you have had enough time to come up with some “whys”. But in case you haven’t, just take a look around during your next shift change or ride in the rig; those are your “whys”. In my last article, I promised you a “how to”; well, JUMP TO FILE# sort of anyway… 072016125 See, the “how” in fitness can be even more complicated than the “why” and because we are firefighters, we tend to make that “how” even more complicated than it needs to be, right?! So maybe this time around we will spend some more time focusing on the “how not’s” rather than the “how to’s,” which surprisingly, may actually be a bit harder. First and foremost, there is no quick and easy fix. If you want to make this work, if you want to do it for yourself, for your family and for your crew, you better plan to be in it for the long haul. Sure, a 28-daychallenge will work, especially one that provides you with what meals to eat, what you should drink and how you need to work out. It’ll work even more so for someone who has been primarily sedentary. But what happens on day 29??? You either re-up your “challenge,” attempt to create on your own the same magic that just occurred, or
it’s back to life as you knew it before. No matter what you see on TV or read in a trade magazine, there is no quick fix, and that’s the hardest pill to swallow. Of course there is still a huge market of products, promising rapid results and ultimate changes. There are even some geared specifically to emergency services personnel. They might look pretty and flashy, or claim to “simulate” real-life training conditions, but here’s a tip; you don’t need them! Do they help? Sure, especially to the person whose just starting out. But over time, what happens to these gimmick products? They end up in a pile on the floor, in the corner, not getting used. Mrs. Pip will tell you that I too, have fallen victim to the next greatest fitness craze, but I call it research so it’s ok; right?? And please, let’s not forget about the thousands of training “styles” that are out there. You can pick from pretty much anything; Fire Fit, Cop Fit, EMS Fit, X Fit, Jump Fit, Box Fit, Planet Fit, You're Fit, I’m Fit, or Whatever Else Fit. Regardless of which you choose, you’re at least picking to be fit, right?! You see, that’s part of the “how” that 555 Fitness focuses on: YOU. It all starts with you and your commitment to bettering yourself, both physically and mentally. The current wave of negativity sweeping through the fire service is
the “look at me” phenomenon, which is allowing the “haters” to take control. These individuals tend to speak from their recliners and say that the only reason we are working out is to look good physically, even when year-after-year, the leading killer of firefighters is still from cardiac related incidents. Remember, you are never just working out. You are training for life, your life, and for those who you respond with, those who are waiting for you at home, and those who you swore to protect. So, where’s the best place to start you may ask? Chances are if you’re still reading this article, you already know the answer to that question. You start by getting up. You start by moving around. YOU are the “how.” Even with the examples I gave above, it’s all you. Every one of them will work for you, but YOU need to make them work and here’s a pro tip; it’s not going to happen overnight. I’m sorry, but fast results, they don’t just come. It’s just like respect within a firehouse; it’s earned. Each and every day that I train, I’m earning my results. Now I’ve told you about the “why” and I’ve told you about the “how.” Next time, I’ll start to talk more about the “how to’s” of fitness in the firehouse.
