Healthcare News - Westchester
After helping hundreds of Westchester County herniated disc sufferers eliminated their pain, Local Doctor explains how…
“Back Pain Technology Cheats Mother Nature Helps Herniated Discs Heal Naturally… In As Little As 25 Minutes!” At Last! Westchester County Doctor Offers Technology That Doesn’t Just End SEVERE Pain From Herniated Discs, But Helps Your Body To Start Rebuilding Them… As Fast As Humanly Possible! Best Part: You can check it all out for FREE if you like! There is no doubt… technology has made all of our lives better… and easier. Just about every miraculous medical cure and comfort of modern living can be attributed to amazing breakthroughs in technology. Heck, laser eye surgery can give people who are almost as blind as a bat perfect 20/20 vision. How amazing is that? That’s why it’s no surprise that technology might be able to solve your back and neck pain from herniated/bulging discs or sciatica…for good. Here is why: Back and neck pain can be devastating. And nothing is worse than going to doctor after doctor… trying treatment after treatment… spending money you can’t afford… and still suffering in pain. That’s why… I bet you would love to instantly end your pain… without any risk what-soever… and have it never come back for the rest of your life? Well, that might NOT be so easy. But, what if there was a wonderful advancement in technology that, with a handful of simple, non-invasive treatments, could possibly have you out of pain and on your way to healing naturally? Better yet, what if this technology could possibly heal your herniated/bulging discs (instead of cutting it out like surgery) so you have the best chance to live pain-free and do all the things you want and love to do? And what if this technology was: 3 FDA cleared! 3 Proven safe and effective! 3 Allows your herniated discs to heal naturally without the risky and dangerous side effects of surgery! 3 Relieves pain fast… in some cases in as little as 25 minutes! Well, guess what? There is such technology and there is a very good chance it can help you… like it has already helps thousands of herniated/bulging disc and sciatica sufferers all around the country… No Matter How Bad Your Pain Is, How Long You’ve Been Suffering Or How Many Other Treatments And Doctors Have Failed You! Don’t laugh. It’s really true. Here’s proof…
When you have a herniated disc, compressive forces cause your spinal bones to come together… basically squashing your disc. The space in between your bones decreases and the soft, jello-like disc material leaks out. This disc material that leaks out is called a herniated disc and can cause severe pain, numbness and tingling in your neck, back, arms or legs when the herniation pushes into and “pinches” a nerve. So it makes sense, if you could slightly pull the spinal bones apart… that would open up the space, take the pressure off the disc, the disc off the nerve and solve the problem. Right? But the only problem is… how do you do that? For years and years, doctors have been trying to do it with traction. But traction has been proven ineffective and often very painful. Why? Traction doesn’t work because when you have a herniated or bulging disc, the area is injured and when you try to move, your muscles go into spasm. Spasm is your body’s way of trying to protect you from causing further injury. That’s why traction hurts so much. As soon as the traction starts… your muscles overprotect the area and spasm. But the good news is: Now there is technology that out-smarts your body’s natural spasm reaction. In other words: It fools mother nature! This technology is called non-surgical spinal decompression (NSSD) and here’s how it works… NSSD is very different from plain traction because it has advanced computer technology that actually senses your spinal muscles. When it starts to gently pull, it immediately knows when your muscles start to contract and it stops pulling. As soon as your muscles relax, it starts pulling again. The amazing thing is: the computer senses your muscles contraction so early… you don’t even feel what is going on. Which means you never feel any pain! In fact, the only thing most patients feel is… RELIEF!!! But the best part is: NSSD is able to gently separate your spinal bones which, in many cases, actually sucks the herniated disc material back into the disc where it belongs! This takes away your pain and allows your herniated and bulging discs to heal naturally!
And check this out: Treatments are pleasant and simple. All you have to do is lie on your back, listen to your favorite music, read a magazine… or… take a nap! The wonderful technology does everything while you simply RELAX the pain away! To sum up NSSD: • For most patients it is 100% painless… in fact many patients actually fall asleep during treatment! • Works fast! Most patients get relief after a handful of treatments – some after the very first! • Is non-invasive so it does not have the dangerous risks of surgery! • Gets to the root cause of the problem and helps it heal naturally! Isn’t modern technology wonderful? And wouldn’t you like to… Give This Great Technology A Try… For Free? If you would, there’s great news. There is a Doctor located at 222 Westchester Ave. Suite 405 in White Plains who has invested hundreds of thousands of dollars in this wonderful technology and has been treating herniated/bulging disc and sciatica patients with incredible success. His name is Dr. Jonathan Donath DC, MS and he is so excited about the results he’s been getting, he would like to share it with as many pain sufferers as possible. But There Is A Catch… There’s always a catch... isn’t there? Even though this technology has helped a majority of the patients Dr. Donath has treated… it is not a wonder cure and it does not help everyone.
On the right: healthy disc. Center: Herniated disc with soft disc material leaking out. On the left: Herniated disc material compressing or “pinching” nerve.
For that reason, Dr. Donath does a complete examination on every potential patient and only accepts you if he feels you are most likely to get the pain relief and outcome you are looking for. Dr. Donath’s Special Deal For You! Because the economy is so bad and Dr. Donath wants to help you if possible, he is offering the first 17 people who respond to this article a free consultation and NSSD qualification examination. And if you qualify for NSSD treatments, Dr. Donath will also give you one treatment for FREE! And if you do not qualify, Dr. Donath will help you find the best option for you. That’s why, if you suffer with pain from a herniated/bulging disc or sciatica you should call 914-259-8104 right now. When Barbara answers the phone, simply tell her you would like your free non-surgical spinal decompression consultation and examination. If you are one of the first 17, she will schedule you within the next few days. If you are in a lot of pain or already scheduled for surgery, tell Barbara and she will be sure to get you in immediately. Maybe even today.
On right: Herniated disc with spinal bones “squished” together. Center: NSSD slightly pulls the spinal bones apart, opens up the disc space and allows herniated material to move back into the disc. Left: Herniated material completely back in center of disc allows the disc to heal naturally. Your consultation and examination should take about 60 minutes. During this time you can get all of your questiones answered in a warm and friendly environment. You will know exactly what’s causing your pain and the best possible way to solve it. Dr. Donath will explain to you all your possible options along with his recomendations so you can make the best choice for YOU.
Why Limited To 17? Dr. Donath has limited the number he will accept right now to 17 because he does not believe patients should wait and they should also get the quality personal attention they deserve. When you go for your free visit, I’m sure you will see how unique and pleasant the experience is. It’s nice to be treated like a person and not a number or based on insurance coverage. It’s also nice to know exactly what’s causing your pain and how to relieve it as fast as possible. Dr. Donath’s favorite cases are the one’s that were able to cancel back surgery after only a handful of treatments. Dr. Donath also loves when a herniated disc patient that is in excruciating pain and thinks they’ve tried everything, lays down on the NSSD table, takes a 25 minute nap… and… wakes up with all their pain GONE! Just imagine how it would feel to have all your pain finally gone. Imagine going to bed and being able to sleep the entire night through… … and waking up refreshed and energized… ready to take on the brand new day – without the pain and stiffness that has been terrorizing you. And imagine finally knowing you have the solution to your herniated disc pain. Well, you may not have to just “imagine” anymore… because… NSSD might start relieving your pain… in just 25 minutes! So, if you’d like to see if you qualify and give this amazing technology a try for free… give Barbara a call at 914-259-8104 right now. Why wait one more day in pain when the solution may be one quick phone call away? Call now before someone else gets your free spot. One More Thing It’s Important… Ever since getting this wonderful technology, Dr. Donath’s office has been flooded with calls. For that reason, if when you call, the lines are busy or you go to voice mail… just keep calling back. The possibility of living pain-free is well worth the time and effort it may take you to get through and schedule your appointment. 914-259-8104

Healthcare News - Westchester
Back to school rush doesn’t have to be stressful Choose extracurricular activities carefully When kids are enrolled in too many after-school activities, it creates a one-way ticket to parental overload. Select one or two activities for your child that won't wear you out with driving duties Don't be afraid to ask for help and carpool with other parents. You'll end up driving a few times every few weeks and it will cut down on travel time. Make time for breakfast You tell your kids that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but do you follow your own advice? Eating breakfast before you head out the door will stave off hunger pains, boost your energy and help you keep your focus for wherever the day takes you. Your mood goes up and down the same way your kids' [moods] do when it comes to food and energy. Skip sugary cereals and carbohydrate-laden meals. Instead, opt for a protein-rich breakfast that includes eggs, oatmeal or turkey bacon. The protein will provide plenty of energy until lunchtime, and will prevents spikes in blood-sugar that can leave you irritable and anxious.
Say it isn’t so: The beautiful Westchester County summer is heading into the homestretch. Get ready to get into back to school mode. Yes, your days of relaxing poolside are just about over. The hustle and bustle of sending your kids back to school can be stressful. Here are some Healthcare News tips to help you stay stress-free and prepare for the coming school year. Arrange “me” time Alleviate back-to-school stress with mandatory parental down time. Whether you use the break to sleep in, have date night or curl up with the latest bestseller, reserving time for yourself is key to zapping stress. Don't forget your own needs. Maybe your days relaxing by the pool aren’t over after all.
Shop strategically With back-to-school commercials hitting our TV screens earlier and earlier each year, it's easy to fall prey to the anxiety that they generate. Transaltion: You overbuy! Your kids don't really need five new outfits; buy only what your kids really need." Figure out what they've outgrown, then determine what they need to fill in those gaps and purchase accordingly. It shouldn't be a grand – and painfully expensive – shopping event. When it comes to shopping for supplies, you might want to wait until after the first day of school, when supply lists are often sent home.
Get everyone on a schedule Kids find comfort in routine, and having stress-free kids makes for stress-free parents. By creating a schedule for doing homework, going to bed, waking up, eating breakfast and taking showers, you can make the daily routine less chaotic for everyone. Having your kids decide on the routine will be less frustrating than you telling them that they have a certain amount of time in the morning or that they have to get their homework done as soon as they come home. By adding their input, your kids will be less frazzled and more co-operative – and you'll be less stressed as a result. Plan ahead To eliminate disorder at home, designate where school bags and supplies will be stored and stock plenty of lunch options. Look for ways to simplify life as opposed to complicating it. Your kids can put away their own belongings and easily find them the next day. They can even pack their own lunches, saving you time and anxiety.

The back to school blues can be difficult and stressful. And, no, were not talking about your children having anxiety as the first day of school approaches. Parents can have the back to school blues, too, knowing their children will be missing the leisurely days of summer, instead learning to navigate school hallways and making new friends. It’s normal for parents of young children to get the back to school blues, even feeling a little loss of identity as the child ventures away from home. If you’re dreading a new school year, there are simple ways to cope with the separation anxiety. Be a school volunteer, pursue other interests, such as yoga, music or exercise and, most of all, don’t be afraid to cry when they go. Oh, and one last thing: Deep breaths, deep breaths. You can do it. The September issue of Healthcare News features several informative back to school stories for you to enjoy. So enjoy this edition and, of course, your children. Before you know it, you will be putting them back on the bus, or driving them to school. Not to worry, they will be OK. And so will you. We always welcome telling these stories and please let us know if you have one for us. Thank you for reading. Look forward to hearing from you. If you're suffering from nerve problems in the arms and legs, you must read about a clinical study that showed
How 85% of Patients Eliminated Numbness, Tingling, or Sharp Pains Numbness, tingling, and pain are extremely annoying problems. It may come and go...interrupts your sleep...and even makes your arm or legs feel weak at times. Maybe you've even been to other doctors and they claim all the tests indicate you should feel fine.
If You Read Nothing Else, Read This: More than 20 million Americans suffer from peripheral neuropathy, a problem caused by damage to the nerves that supply your arms and legs. This painful condition interferes with your body's ability to transmit messages to your muscles, skin, joints, or internal organs. If ignored or mistreated, neuropathy can lead to irreversible health conditions. Why not get help by those trained to correct the major cause of peripheral neuropathy. Read the full facts on this page. More Pills Are Not the Solution A common treatment for many nerve problems is the 'take some pills and wait and see' method. While this may be necessary for temporary relief of severe symptoms, using them long term is no way to live. Some of the more common drugs given include pain pills, anti-seizure mediations, and anti-depressants -- all of which have serious side effects. The Likely Cause of Your Problem My name is Dr. Alex Hilario, clinic director at Chiropractic Rehabilitation Source. I've been helping people with neuropathy and nerve problems for more than 10 years.
Often neuropathy is caused by a degenerating spine pressing on the nerve roots. This can happen in any of the vertebral joints from the neck all the way down to the tail bone. The good news is that chiropractic treatments have proven effective in helping to remove the pressure on the nerves. By using gentle techniques, I'm able to release the pressure that has built up on the nerve. This allows the nerve to heal and the symptoms to go away. For example, numerous studies have proven chiropractic's effectiveness in helping nerve conditions. Patients showed an 85.5% resolution of the nerve symptoms after only 9 chiropractic treatments. - Journal of Chiropractic Medicine 2008 With chiropractic care, patients had “significant improvement in perceived comfort and function, nerve conduction and finger sensation overall.” – JMPT 1998 “Significant increase in grip strength and normalization of motor and sensory latencies were noted. Orthopedic tests were negative. Symptoms dissipated.” – JMPT 1994 What these studies mean is that you could soon be enjoying life...without those aggravating nerve problems. Could This Be Your Solution? It’s time for you to find out if chiropractic will be your neuropathy solution.
• An in-depth consultation about your health and well-being where I will listen…really listen…to the details of your case. • A complete neuromuscular examination. • A thorough analysis of your exam and x-ray findings so we can start mapping out your plan to being pain free. • I'll answer your most probing questions about nerve problems and how chiropractic can help. Until August 30, 2014 you can get everything I’ve listed here for only $47. The normal price for this type of evaluatio is $250, so you’re saving a considerable amount by taking me up on this offer. Call 914-584-6864 now. We can get you scheduled for your consultation, and exam as soon as there’s an opening. Our office is located in the heart of White Plains near Starbucks, Galleria Mall and Wal-Mart, when you call, tell the receptionist you’d like to come in for the Nerve Evaluation so she can get you on the schedule and make sure you receive proper credit for this special offer. Sincerely, Alex Hilario, D.C. P.S. Remember, you only have until August 30 to reserve an appointment at this significant discount. Why suffer for years in misery? That’s no way to live, not when there could be an easy solution to your problem.
For 14 days only, $30 will get you all the services I normally charge new patients $250 for!
P.P.S. Nothing’s worse than feeling great mentally, but physically feeling held back from life because your arms or legs hurt – and the pain just won’t go away!

Chef Peter X. Kelly Teaching Kitchen opens at HVHC The kitchen is open! Hudson Valley Hospital Center’s Chef Peter X. Kelly Teaching Kitchen recently debuted with a visit from Congresswoman Nita Lowey and an announcement of a Signature Chefs Series that will help to fund the kitchen in future years. Children from the Peekskill School District worked with Chef Kelly to prepare breakfast for Congresswoman Lowey and the more than 50 guests who turned out to christen the new kitchen. “With the opening of the Chef Peter X. Kelly Teaching Kitchen we have the opportunity to teach people of all ages a healthier approach to eating and to help them understand why their diet is so very important to their health. We thank Chef Peter Kelly and others who have supported this kitchen as well as our Congresswoman Nita Lowey for advocating for preventive health initiatives like this one,’’ said Hudson Valley Hospital Center President John C. Federspiel. The Chef Peter X. Kelly Teaching Kitchen – named after the “Iron Chef” winner and owner of Xaviars Restaurant Group – is part of a larger initiative at the Hospital called Harvest for Health which includes an organic garden, twice -monthly farmers’ markets and a locally sourced food service for patients and employees. Through this initiative the Hospital is working with patients and the general community to teach them to better manage their health through diet and lifestyle changes. Classes range from general cooking instruction to very specific curriculum for diabetics, cancer and heart patients, breastfeeding moms and those with gluten sensitivities.
A program designed especially for children - The Young Chefs of the Hudson Valley- works with children 11-13 in Peekskill and other local schools to prevent childhood obesity. Chef Kelly said supporting the kitchen and, in particular, the Young Chefs program was important to him. To achieve this goal, Chef Kelly announced a Signature Chefs Series. The series will feature noted chefs of the Hudson Valley such as Waldy Malauf, Ethan Kostbar, David Dibari, Eric Gabrinowitz and Anthony Goncalves among others, and will host seasonal dinners in the kitchen showcasing locally sourced foods of the Hudson Valley. The meals will be auctioned and prepared privately for the highest bidders. All proceeds from the Signature Chefs Series will go to support the Young Chefs program for at- risk middle school children.

Federspiel, Chef Peter X. Kelly and Peekskill Middle School Student Aaryana Garzon.
The Young Chefs program strives to teach children about the importance of healthy eating through cooking classes that are fun and interactive.
The goal is to break bad eating habits that can result in chronic diseases like diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure later in life.
With ingredients donated by local farms including Coach Farms DoReMe Farms and Homestead Farms, children in the program prepared a goat milk yogurt parfait with homemade granola and a watermelon drink from guests at the opening. Chef Kelly said unlike other programs that work to prevent childhood obesity, the Young Chefs program doesn’t stop at teaching kids about the healthy plate or five-a-day philosophy. It works to help children develop a love and appreciation of food from the garden to plate. “When kids go into the garden and pick a carrot and then prepare it, they have a better understanding of where their food comes from,’’ said Kelly. “Hopefully, making this connection will completely change their relationship with food and help them to develop better eating habits.’’

school healthy eating guide
Kids are back to school and you’re back to business after a relaxing summer, but you don’t have to sacrifice eating healthy just because you’re all busy. Check out these ideas healthy options for you’re the school lunch box. Fruits and veggies: Make your weekly farmers market trip a family outing and explain to kids what it means for something to be in season. Show them how sweet and flavorful foods can taste when they’re at their peak and let them pick their favorites.
Cheese: In reasonable quantities cheese can be a satisfying snack. Just stay away from the really processed stuff at the grocery store– check the ingredients label and avoid long, scientific sounding words.
Homemade granola: Store bought granola is usually more like dessert than a healthy snack, but you can make your own with less sugar and it is still delicious.
Peanut butter: Like hummus, peanut (or any nut) butter can be a wonderful dip for fruits and veggies. Natural nut butters that have no added sugar, no added trans fat, are full of healthy fats (this is good).
Hummus: A small tupperware of hummus is a perfect accompaniment to cut up vegetables, whole grain breads and crackers.
Trail mix: If your child can tolerate nuts then trail mix is a fun and nutritious snack. Try different combinations of nuts and dried fruits.
Healthy sandwich choices include: hummus, avocado, peanut/almond butter, soft fruit, canned Alaskan salmon, cheese, roasted chicken or turkey, egg salad, mixed veggies, etc. Try not to choose deli meats as your standard choice, since they are highly processed and have been tied to all sorts of health
problems. Likewise, limit canned tuna to once per month because of the high mercury content. Sandwiches: When choosing bread, look for artisan brands with few ingredients and no preservatives. This kind of bread is often found in paper bags and costs less than the fake-healthy soft stuff in plastic.

The Importance of Elder Law: You must protect your assets, family and future now! For nearly 30 years, practicing law has been Ely Rosenzveig’s passion. His inspiration? That comes from, among other things, his life experiences, the people he has met, and the clients he works with every day. The widow who didn’t have a will and was concerned about her financial future. The family that was reeling from health issues impacting their elderly loved ones without any planning in place to address their needs, leaving them with the prospect of exorbitantly expensive care needs. Ely Rosenzveig was a rabbi in Westchester County. The plight of some in his congregation moved him to practice elder law and trust and estate planning. He would become a senior partner at one of the foremost elder law firms in the country, but left to join hands with his son, Ariel. “I really jumped at the opportunity to work in this area of law,” Ely Rosenzveig said. “I think it’s special kind of work. To help people and work with your son is incredibly rewarding. Ariel is a great asset – a wonderful and gifted young attorney.” The law firm of Ely J. Rosenzveig & Associates, P.C. in White Plains practices in all areas of elder law, including trust and
estate planning, administration, and litigation, tax counsel, asset protection and special needs planning, Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security disability benefits, guardianships, long term care planning, spousal recovery claims, and Medicaid lien resolutions. Father and son pride themselves on an unyielding commitment to the zealous advocacy of their clients’ interests. Estate planning is one of the most important steps any person can take to make sure that their final property and health care wishes are honored, and that loved ones are provided for in their absence. A comprehensive estate plan can resolve a number of legal questions that arise whenever anyone dies. Appropriate estate and Medicaid planning can help preserve assets, reduce taxes, and help individuals qualify for Medicaid. “People don’t want to talk about illness and death,” Ariel Rosenzveig said. “It’s a tough subject. People are reluctant, but the type of measures that we implement for our clients can save them and their loved ones a lot of money. Proper planning will help provide financial and emotional security for all involved.”
The firm is very experienced in making sure that those eligible for Medicaid and Medicare get the benefits they deserve. Ely J. Rosenzveig & Associates, P.C. has been very successful in negotiating the complex bureaucratic minefield in which Medicaid is now mired, a dynamic only exacerbated with the passage of the Deficit reduction Act of 2006, and the new rules regarding the look-back requirements, and penalty period calculations for non-Medicaid exempt asset transfers. The firm has achieved remarkable results for clients on a host of Medicaid related issues, from getting Medicaid approvals for coverage of home care and institutional care benefits, to very accommodative resolutions of Medicaid spousal recovery claims, where the office of Medicaid aggressively pursues the non-institutionalized (i.e., or “community”) spouse for Medicaid benefits provided. No matter what the case, Ely J. Rosenzveig & Associates, P.C. prides itself on working with each client individually, catering to each one’s diverse needs. Estate planning should begin at a young age with a will, health care proxy, living
will and durable power of attorney. As you grow older and accumulate assets, it is especially important that you speak with an experience elder law attorney issues pertaining to issues concerning Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and further estate planning. Elder law is about more than just saving money. When viewed properly, elder law is about two major things: First, ensuring that your personal wishes — financial, medical, and legal — are carried out; and second, understanding that elder law is a family matter affecting an intricate web of individual relationships. Knowing that your potential long-term care needs have already been addressed frees you and your family from needless worry. And Ely and Ariel Rosenzveig are there to help their cherished clients every step of the way. “We want every client to feel like they are our only client,” Ely Rosenzveig said. “We are totally committed to ensuring that we be fully responsive to our clients’ every need. For us, this is tremendously rewarding. It is the very reason why we have become elder law attorneys.”

True Spirit of a Champion When Sophia Mercado’s mother saw her through the school bus window, she knew something wasn’t right with her youngest daughter. Sophia had trouble descending the school bus steps, and by the time mom and daughter crossed the street and entered their home, Sophia’s face was drooping and she’d lost feeling and function on the left side of her body. Young Sophia was whisked to Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital at Westchester Medical Center, where she was diagnosed with an abnormal tangle of arteries and veins. Her brain was hemorrhaging and she needed emergency neurosurgery to save her life. Since that fateful autumn day in 2011, Sophia has undergone a second neurosurgery to care for another malformation. Despite these challenges, today she is doing well. She uses her own medical journey as inspiration for other children and families facing similar circumstances. The way Sophia sees the world, there’s always reason for hope and optimism. It’s no wonder that Mercado, 11, of Walden in Orange County has been named the state champion for the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals (CMNH). Nominated by the Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital at Westchester Medical Center, Sophia was chosen because she embodies the true spirit of a champion after bravely facing three brain surgeries (from 2011 to 2013) due to an Arteriovenous Malformation (AVM) hemorrhage. “We are thrilled Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals one again chose a patient from our hospital to be the Champions ambassador for all of New York State,” stated Michael Gewitz, M.D., Physician-in-Chief, Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital at Westchester Medical Center. “This honor along with Sophia’s story of courage and determination symbolize the exceptional, advanced pediatric care provided by Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital, and the inspirational spirit of the children we care for each and every day.” Each year, the CMNH champions program chooses an exceptional child from each state with an amazing medical story. This year, 52 champions were chosen to serve as ambassadors for the 17 million children treated at Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals annually. For one week in November the Champions, along with their families, will travel to Washington, D.C. and Orlando, FL conducting media interviews, inspiring fundraising corporate partners, attend a gala in their honor and rub shoulders with celebrities and politicians, in the past, other champions have even met President Barack Obama. In addition to Sophia’s Champions appointment, Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital is also announcing the “publishing” of Sophia first book: How I Became a Champion. In the book Sophia discusses her own medical journey with the hope of inspiring other children battling similar medical challenges. Sophia is an avid reader and hopes to pursue a career in writing. Sophia’s book is available in limited quantities and those interested in obtaining a copy can do so by making a request through the Westchester Medical Center “Contact Us” Web page at www.WestchesterMedicalCenter.com/ContactUS

Urgent Care Centers: The Emerging and Convenient Method for Healthcare By Gina Cappelli, President of Forme Urgent Care and Wellness Center When you are sick or injured, an urgent care center can be a very convenient option as opposed to having to wait for an appointment with your physician or going to the dreaded emergency room. Urgent care centers are usually open for patients 7 days a week from the early morning, to the late evening, and they usually don’t require patients to make an appointment. The long flexible hours of urgent centers provide a convenient, and stress free environment for people to come in and get immediate medical attention. Urgent care centers are often the best bet for patients who need medical attention for non-life threatening conditions. The urgent care industry is growing. According to the American Academy of Urgent Care Medicine (AAUCM), there are approximately 9,300 urgent care centers in the country and anywhere from 50 to 100 clinics open up every year. There are currently 20,000 and counting physicians working at these urgent care facilities around the country. With the growing popularity of urgent care centers around the country, research has shown that by 2025 there will be a need for approximately 52,000 physicians working at urgent care centers.
There are many reasons why urgent care centers are becoming so popular, such as: Urgent care is regularly available. Urgent care is the most convenient and readily available healthcare option available for patients today. The majority of primary care doctor’s offices are only open Monday through Friday, and many offices close at 5pm. Few primary care doctors have after hours appointments available. Meanwhile, urgent care centers are usually open to patients 365 days a year, from the early morning to late evening and usually do not require patients to make an appointment. Urgent care is NOT emergency care. There is a common misconception that urgent care is equivalent to emergency care, however, that is not true. Emergency rooms are designed for life threatening and/or limb saving care, while urgent care centers are for treating conditions that need to be taken care of immediately, but are not a major emergency. Additionally, the wait times at urgent care centers are normally much quicker than those in the emergency room. Urgent care centers save both time and energy. Urgent care centers provide timely care to patients, all hours of the day. According to the AAUCM, the wait time to see a health care provider in an urgent care center is typically only half an hour or less, while an emergency room visit can require multiple hours of waiting. If a patient is suffering from an ailment that is not fit for the emergency room, it is more cost and time efficient to seek medical care at a local urgent care center that can see patients more quickly and less expensive than the emergency room. While value is high, the price is not. A visit to an urgent care facility is likely to be about one-third to one-half the price of a standard emergency room visit. According to a study conducted by RAND Corp, up to 27% of emergency room cases could have been treated by an urgent care center, which would have saved a total of $4.4 billion dollars per year in health costs. Research by CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield showed that if a patient were to seek medical care for a sore throat, choosing an urgent care center over an emergency room would provide this person with nearly 85% savings. In most situations, you will save time and money by going to an urgent care center instead of an emergency room. If you have a minor injury such as a bad cut or ear infection, you may end up waiting for hours in the emergency room and paying hundreds or thousands of dollars for your care, while at an urgent care center you would be taken care of in a speedy, and personable way for a fraction of the emergency room price. Additionally, most urgent care centers are open for extended hours, to cater to their patients’ needs. Also, you will usually end up paying much lower co-pays at an urgent care center as opposed to an emergency room. Gina Cappelli is the President of Forme Urgent Care and Wellness Center in White Plains, NY, which in addition to urgent care also provides a broad spectrum of specialty medicine, rehabilitation and wellness programs all under one roof. Forme accepts most insurance plans. For more information, please visit: www.formeurgentcare.com.

U.S. News & World Report names Northern Westchester Hospital a Best Hospital in New York
provided
Northern Westchester Hospital has been ranked as one of the best hospitals in New York for 2014-2015 by U.S. News & World Report. The annual U.S. News Best Hospitals rankings, now in their 25th year, recognize hospitals that excel in treating the most challenging patients. In addition to being recognized as a Best Hospital, Northern Westchester Hospital was recognized regionally for expertise in Gynecology, Urology, Geriatrics, Orthopedics, and Neurosurgery. For 2014-15, U.S. News evaluated hospitals in 16 adult specialties and ranked the top 50 in most of the specialties. Just 12 percent of the nearly 5,000 hospitals that were analyzed for Best Hospitals 2014-15 earned a regional ranking in even one specialty. NWH was ranked within five different specialties. “Providing the highest level of quality, patientcentered care is our priority at Northern Westchester Hospital. We have designed and implemented numerous processes that help to ensure that high quality care is consistently delivered to our patients. This recognition by U.S. News & World Report is further testament
to the commitment by our physicians and staff to going the extra mile to care for our patients,” commented Joel Seligman, President and CEO of Northern Westchester Hospital. “The data tell the story – a hospital that emerged from our analysis as one of the best has much to be proud of,” says U.S. News Health Rankings Editor Avery Comarow. “A Best Hospital has demonstrated its expertise in treating the most challenging patients.” U.S. News publishes Best Hospitals to help guide patients who need a high level of care because they face particularly difficult surgery, a challenging condition or extra risk because of age or multiple health problems. Objective measures such as patient survival and safety data, adequacy of nurse staffing levels and other data largely determined the rankings in most specialties. The specialty rankings and data were produced for U.S. News by RTI International, a leading research organization based in Research Triangle Park, N.C. Using the same data, U.S. News produced the state and metro rankings.

Why establish a Health Savings Account? By Andrew J. Cavaliere, CLTC Given all the turmoil in the health insurance marketplace today, there are so many reasons why employers and employees should establish Health Savings Accounts (HSAs). Here are just a few: 1- HSA eligible high deductible health plans save money for employers and employees. 2- HSAs contributions are vested day one by the accountholder.
A s k
3- HSA contributions are tax deductible. 4- HSA interest is tax-free. 5- HSA distributions for qualified medical expenses are tax-free. 6- HSA qualified medical expenses extend beyond major medical to include dental, vision, chiropractor, etc. 7- HSAs have no lifetime limit.
A n
8- HSA maximum annual contributions can be made at any time during the year. 9- HSA funds that are not used roll over from year-to-year and after age 65 can be distributed for retirement. 10- HSA contributions can be made by the employer, the employee or both. Today, many accountholders continue to use their HSA the same way they used to use their flexible spending account (FSA). That is, they simply use their available funds to cover current medical expenses, leaving little or nothing to rollover from year-to-year. While that is an option with HSAs, it is not a requirement. More importantly, employees are missing out on the real benefit of HSAs which is namely growing their balances for retirement…! It is easy to understand this since many consumers often overlook the benefits due to lack of education and company communication. There’s a great need for employers to help shift this mindset beyond just paying for this year’s medical bills. Employers should systematically encourage their employees to save for their future. Since HSA contributions are really above the line deductions, like a 401(k), they serve as a powerful tool for long-term savings and as a key part of an overall retirement strategy in order to build wealth for both medical and other general retirement expenses, including tax-free Medicare premiums as well as Long-Term Care insurance. As always, any tax planning of this kind should be conducted with the full knowledge of a qualified and trusted CPA. For more information about Health Insurance planning please call Andrew J. Cavaliere, CLTC at 914-682-2190 or toll free 877-676-9900. Andrew is certified in Long-Term Care (CLTC) from the Corporation for Long-Term Care Certification, Inc. Andrew is a member in good standing of the Million Dollar Round Table (MDRT), which is the premier Association of financial professionals nationally. Supplying orthotic appliances to in-patients: Introduction
When a physician orders brace for an in- patient, what steps are hospitals taking to ensure public safety? Hospitals tend to contact an outside vendor to fill the order for the brace. As you have probably have read elsewhere, orthotic appliance vendors are under tight scrutiny secondary to fraud and abuse. In the state of New Jersey, a person must be licensed as an Orthotist to fit a patient with an orthopedic device. Unfortunately, there are several vendors that are owned by an Orthotist but send a ‘fitter’ or ‘assistant’ to hospitals for fittings. Under this scenario, the hospital and ordering physician assume product liability for services provided by the vendor. There is a clause in the state law that allows ‘fitters’ and licensed Orthotist assistants to fit products under the direct supervision of the ordering physician. However, the ordering physician must be present at fitting and is now deemed responsible for the fitting and performance of device. The hospital, via written contract, should mandate that all fittings within their facility must be performed by a licensed Orthotist, not assistant or fitter. Even a licensed assistant Orthotist is not allowed to fit products in a hospital setting unless the supervising Orthotist is present at fitting. If the licensed Orthotist assistant fits without the licensed Orthotist present, then responsibility falls to hospital and ordering physician again. Who are these Orthotists?
A licensed Orthotist must have a bachelor’s degree, complete a postgraduate certification program from an accredited college or university, and then perform 1900 hours of clinical residency under the supervision of a licensed Orthotist. This intense training is imperative to ensure public safety. Orthotic appliances can danger patients if not fabricated and fitted properly. Not just from creating
wounds and bed sores, but also causing muscular skeletal issues from improper positioning of orthotic appliance. Think of this, a typical leg fracture brace consists of very rigid plastic around thigh and calf connected with a metal joint on both sides of brace. Then the patient lies down in this contraption for 6 – 8 weeks. If this brace is not fabricated and fit properly, long and short term issues may arise. When is a hospital financially liable to bring in an Orthotist for services/products?
When an in-patient is being covered under a government diagnosis-related group payment system, the hospital is financially responsible to provide orthotic appliances ordered. If the in-patient has private insurance, the vendor should be billing the insurer directly. Hospitals need to assist vendor with obtaining proper referrals and authorizations from time to time, but generally the vendors should be billing them directly. It may be necessary for hospitals to have more than one vendor in order to ensure that the patient is being treated by a vendor that has a contract with their insurer. If the patient has no insurance at all, then there is a gray area on who is responsible. I think the patient is technically responsible for Orthotist service, but probably won’t be able to afford the services prescribed. Then the physician may not allow patient discharge without the product. So hospital may step in and pay for the product and service of the Orthotist. In this scenario, hospitals with good relations with their vendors of choice may request a reduced rate in order to obtain their service. What do doctors do to treat their own pain? As a board-certified internist who has been in practice for over 13 years, I spend much of my time attempting to alleviate the pain and suffering of my patients. As a clinician, one of the biggest challenges I face is helping my patients deal with musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes—those all-too-common, yet frequently debilitating ailments caused by bad backs, pinched nerves, arthritis, and the like. Unfortunately, much of what I have to offer my patients boils down to the following: take a pain pill, stretch if you can, wait, and hope for the best. After a failed trial of “conservative” therapy a call might go out to the orthopedic surgeon for assistance; a truly satisfactory result is not common. The simple fact is that physicians are not well trained to deal with musculoskeletal pain, and patients can suffer as a result. Thankfully, my views on this topic have been turned completely upside down since I havepersonally discovered Dr. Jonathan Donath’s outstanding practice. After beginning a vigorous exercise regimen I started to experience awful neck and upper back pain, accompanied by numbness and tingling down my left arm and fingers. For weeks I tried to nurse the pain with non steroidal anti-inflammatory medication, but the pain persisted and got to the point that I was almost unable to work, sleep, or most importantly, play guitar. I wasliterally in tears from the excruciating pain. A neurosurgeon diagnosed a herniated disc and pinched nerve in my neck and offered to decompress it with an operation. In desperation I called Dr. Donath instead. My visit to Dr. Donath’s office was an outstanding experience. He spent about an hour with me and combined multiple modalities to fix the herniated disc in my neck: deep massage, active release techniques, traditional manipulation, cold therapy, and finally spinal decompression. After that first hour with Dr. Donath my pain had decreased from a 10/10 down to a manageable 4/10, and I was able to comfortably move my head and neck. That very night I was able to play guitar again. Two days later I went back for another series of treatments and the pain decreased even further. After about five days the pain was absolutely gone. Unbelievable! Since then he has used the same wonderful techniques to help me overcome painful bouts of sciatica as well. My own patients and family members have become “believers” in Dr. Donath’s abilities as well--- the results he achieves are real and lasting. He is my go to guy for the majority of musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes that I now realize are truly treatable. Dr. Robert Sidlow MD, Associate Professor of Medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine
I am a pediatrician and in my work, I have to bend down a lot and I’m constantly lifting kids. I usually have one to three bad flare ups of low back pain every year. When my back would "go out", I could barely walk to the bathroom and would have to lie down in bed for a few days. I have tried everything: doing nothing and "toughing it out", muscle relaxants, physical therapy, chiropractic, therapeutic massage, and even painful steroid injections. Nothing worked. When I moved to Westchester, I met Dr. Jonathan Donath. In just a couple of sessions with Dr. Donath, the pain completely disappeared. If it hadn't happened to me, I wouldn't have believed it. During my last flare up, I was expecting to be on my back for 2-3 days and in pain for 2 weeks. Instead, after one session with Dr. Donath, I was able to walk; two more sessions and I was fine. I could walk, bend down and I had almost no pain. Since that last back episode, Dr. Donath has helped me with my tendonitis in my right hand and with my chronic knee problems. I recommend Dr. Donath to everyone with back, muscle or joint pain. Even if you have not had relief with other treatments and other Chiropractors, give Dr. Donath a chance. I did and he changed my life. Eugene Dinkevich MD, Mount Vernon, NY It’s my great pleasure to write about Westchester Spinal Decompression Center. I really don’t have words to express my feelings about the care I got in last 3 months. I was almost handicapped, living with terrible pain all the time, crippling my day to day life. I am a medical doctor and work in a hospital with all sorts of amazing physicians, but after seeing a physical therapist, getting epidural steroids injections, many orthopedists and neurosurgeons, finally my destination lead me to see Dr Jonathan Donath. With great skepticism, I lied down for spinal decompression therapy. It was unbelievable that after only two initial sessions, my radiating pain down my leg had almost disappeared. Gradually, I started getting better, started doing exercises that they gave me midway through the treatment. Now, I am doing all my daily activities without any pain. I highly recommend Dr Jonathan and his colleague Dr Kavita for any problems related to the musculoskeletal system, you will definitely feel at home and will get better.
