MONOC Paramedics, Local Police and Rescue Squad Personnel meet with CPR survivor February 5, 2015 was a happy occasion for MONOC Paramedics and public safety personnel in Cranford, NJ when cardiac arrest survivor Catherine Hallax met with the responders who performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) when she suffered a heart attack on January 22, 2015. The incident occurred at approximately 12:15am, when Hallax, 56, began feeling a pain in her chest while watching television. She was able to call out her son’s name once before she collapsed. Charles Hallax, Lieutenant on the Cranford First Aid Squad, was in a nearby room and wasted no time in calling 9-1-1 and beginning CPR. First to arrive on scene were Cranford police, followed by the Cranford First Aid Squad and MONOC Paramedics Jim DeVico and Susan DiMartini. As a team, the group performed basic and advanced life support until Mrs. Hallax regained a heartbeat. Mrs. Hallax was then transported to a local hospital where she received emergency surgery shortly after her arrival. Today, Catherine Hallax is feeling fine and remembers little of events that evening. She knows, however, that too few people survive an episode of cardiac arrest and she is grateful to the responders that made tonight’s visit possible. When everyone was assembled, she had one message to give. “Just thank you – every last one of you – thank you.

Nurse’s Viewpoint

Autonomy and Advancement for Nurses through Anesthesia Start counting backwards from ten. 10, 9, 8... and suddenly a calm coma washes over the patient. Next, the face mask filling the patient with the precisely calculated amount of anesthesia is replaced with a carefully inserted breathing tube. Both peripheral and central line access may be obtained. The orchestration of monitoring and safely anesthetizing the patient is an autonomous and challenging job. This unique role is now being performed by Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNA). CRNAs are advanced practice nurses who prepare patients for anesthesia, administer and titrate the sedation, oversee pain management, and manage the patient's recovery from anesthesia post-operatively. Working in fields such as open heart surgery, pain management, and labor and delivery, CRNAs are a valuable part of the health care team and collaborate with surgeons, anesthesiologists and dentists. Aside from the perks of increased autonomy, career advancement, and a stimulating work environment, the average salary is not so bad either. With high responsibility comes high compensation with average salaries reported around $100,000 (depending on location and experience). CRNAs are some of the highest paid advanced practice nursing professionals. What does it take to become a CRNA? Nurses must begin with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree and graduate schools look for a minimum of one to two years of critical care experience as a registered nurse. According to the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists, there are currently 114 accredited programs in the United States. Admissions counselors look for competitive applicants with experience in ICU or large ER settings and strong leadership qualifications. Degree programs range from a full time curriculum over 24-36 months and clinical training occurs at over 2,500 sites including large universitybased hospitals. Following graduation, nurses must pass the National Certification Examination and maintain clinical competencies. In 1986, Congress passed legislation making nurse anesthetists the first nursing specialty to be directly reimbursed under the Medicare program. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services notes a growing job market needed for CRNAs around the country. Incorporating critical thinking skills, independence and increased responsibility, this specialized role in nursing could be just the advanced degree you are looking for.

Leveraging Virtual Clinical Simulation to achieve better patient outcomes How do nursing students in an online course develop and improve their diagnostic and criticalthinking skills outside of a formal clinical setting? For approximately 3,000 registered nurses enrolled in Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) programs at Thomas Edison State College, it is through an innovative virtual clinical simulation program that enables students to interact with avatars in an online course and practice critical patient diagnostic skills from the convenience of their homes, after their nursing shifts end. “Education is extremely important to nursing and nurses today need flexibility and academic rigor, so when it comes to developing courses for working nurses sometimes we have to think outside of the box,” said Dr. Filomela Marshall, dean of the W. Cary Edwards School of Nursing. “Our challenge was to bring the right type of technology into our courses so we can enhance interaction and bring the clinical lessons to life in an online format.” Marshall said the avatars* are sophisticated digital representations of patients in a variety of health care scenarios who describe their symptoms to students in the courses.
“Thanks to the support of many organizations, we are integrating our courses with advanced technology and software to help students learn and practice vital assessments, develop critical thinking skills and refine their diagnostic and clinical assessment skills in an interactive, online learning environment that causes no risk to live patients,” she said. The program is supported by the PNC Foundation, Investors Foundation, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Fred C. Rummel Foundation, Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation, Inc., Provident Bank Foundation and Roma Bank Community Foundation. “There is a critical need for highly skilled healthcare professionals in our state and across the country,” said Linda Bowden, PNC Bank regional president for New Jersey. “We can think of no better way to help prepare our next generation of nursing professionals for successful careers than by supporting the cutting edge virtual clinical simulation program at Thomas Edison State College.” Currently, the nursing program has integrated the interactive technology into four courses: • Advanced Pharmacology • Advanced Pathophysiology • Advanced Health Assessment • Public Health Nursing

education & careers Hackensack University Health Network and Seton Hall University announce joint venture to form School of Medicine Hackensack University Health Network (HackensackUHN) and Seton Hall University (SHU) announced recently that the two institutions have signed a memorandum of understanding to form a new, four-year school of medicine. This partnership will establish the only private school of medicine currently in the state and provide a significant economic boost to the region. The school intends to locate on the campus of the former Hoffmann-La Roche Inc. (Roche), a state-of-theart biomedical facility, in Nutley and Clifton, New Jersey. Establishing a school of medicine with the backing of two esteemed institutions will attract the best and brightest to the field of medicine in the State of New Jersey and help curb the critical physician shortage that the state and the nation currently face. By 2020, it is estimated there will be a shortage of 2,500 physicians in the Garden State. HackensackUHN and SHU's joint venture to create a premier academic institution will help combat the physician shortage by providing key educational, research, and career opportunities to incentivize the next generation to pursue a career in medicine. “We are excited to be taking this next step with Seton Hall University. Our academic reputations, combined with our clinical expertise, will guarantee the establishment of a world-class academic institution in the Garden State,” said Robert C. Garrett, president and CEO of HackensackUHN.
“New Jersey has long been known as a home to the healthcare and pharmaceutical industries, and it is imperative we continue to support our future workforce through a premier school of medicine.” “Seton Hall University has always been committed to academic excellence and servant leadership, Hackensack University Health Network has always been committed to healthcare excellence,” said Dr. A. Gabriel Esteban, president of Seton Hall University. “As a Catholic university with strong programs in the sciences, nursing, health and medical sciences, and health law, we are perfectly poised to create a school of medicine that will educate talented people in the diverse fields of healthcare.” Garrett added, “The school of medicine will create thousands of highly skilled jobs for New Jerseyans in the years to come, attracting new businesses to relocate to our great state to take advantage of our highly skilled workforce. I look forward to partnering with Seton Hall University to making this school of medicine among the best in the nation.” The school of medicine will be committed to educational and healthcare excellence, cutting-edge research, high quality care, and the advancement of medical and health science educational imperatives. Seton Hall's plan to integrate their nursing and allied health programs with the new school of
medicine is not only innovative but mirrors how healthcare will be delivered in the future. HackensackUHN’s hospitals will serve as the primary clinical teaching sites for SHU and SHU-affiliated graduate education programs. Access to HackensackUHN's premier healthcare facilities and training programs will provide hands-on experience and incentivize highly-trained researchers and physicians to live and work in New Jersey upon graduation. The first class is expected to begin within the next three years. “HackensackUHN and Seton Hall’s vision to create this school of medicine is truly inspirational. Repurposing Roche’s premier state-of-the art facility for this purpose is an excellent fit to Roche's purpose of “Doing now what patients need next,’ said Tom Lyon, vice president and site head, Roche. “Creating a pipeline of future healthcare professionals truly embodies Roche's vision and continues the positive healthcare-related legacy for the local communities. As we divest the site, we look forward to working with HackensackUHN and Seton Hall and the ultimate new owner of the Roche campus to help make the new school of medicine a reality.” Subject to the New Jersey Economic Development Authority (EDA) approval, an agreement is expected to be finalized in early 2015.

education & careers Camden County College & Our Lady of Lourdes School of Nursing partner with Thomas Edison State College to offer Four-Year Pathway to BSN Degree Camden County College and Our Lady of Lourdes School of Nursing are collaborating with the W. Cary Edwards School of Nursing at Thomas Edison State College to create a dual admission nursing program that enables students to complete a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree in four years. The “Finish in Four” program will allow graduates of the nursing cooperative program offered by Camden County College and Our Lady of Lourdes School of Nursing to transfer and apply up to 80 credits to the online RNBSN program at Thomas Edison State College. This partnership answers a key recommendation from the Institute of Medicine report, The Future of Nursing, which calls for an increase in the proportion of nurses with a baccalaureate degree to 80 percent by 2020,” said Dr. Filomela Marshall, dean of the W. Cary Edwards School of Nursing at Thomas Edison State College. “Many hospitals and healthcare organizations have shown an increase in hiring nurses with a BSN. This trend is driven by the research that demonstrates the educational level of professional nurses is clearly linked to better patient outcomes.” The program will provide a pipeline of baccalaureate-prepared nurses to provide healthcare services to underserved populations in Camden and throughout the Delaware Valley. The public-private collaboration provides a seamless transition for eligible students enrolled in the nursing cooperative program of-
fered by Camden County College and Our Lady of Lourdes School of Nursing, where students complete a nursing diploma and an associate in science degree. “This model is a perfect example of what can be accomplished when nursing education at the baccalaureate degree level collaborates with diploma/associate degree programs,” said Dr. Anne McGinley, dean of Nursing, Health Sciences and Human Services at Camden County College. Eligible students enrolled in the cohort-based program will be granted conditional acceptance to the RN-BSN program at Thomas Edison State College and full acceptance once they complete the nursing diploma and associate in science degree and pass the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). Students enrolled under the collaboration will receive discounted tuition and a deferred payment option. “We are very excited about the opportunity to partner with Thomas Edison. Our Lady of Lourdes School of Nursing and Camden County College provide a challenging curriculum coupled with 880 clinical hours of practical, hands-on experiences that thoroughly prepare students for nursing in today’s healthcare environment,” said Dr. Lisa Easterby, dean of Our Lady of Lourdes School of Nursing. “This partnership allows our students to complete their BSN degree in one additional year following graduation from the cooperative program—and at considerable savings in tuition.”

Hunterdon Medical Center named Top 10 Education Residency Program in the Northeast Recognized by physicians for Family Medicine training leadership in Doximity report Hunterdon Medical Center’s Family Medicine Residency Program was named one of the Top 10 residency programs in the Northeast for Family Medicine training recently. Doximity, the largest physician network, recently announced the first-ever regional residency program rankings. In September, data on a national evaluation of residency programs was made public for the first time, in an effort to provide more transparency into the performance of residency programs and give medical students information to choose the right residency program to kickstart their career. Today these rankings are being released on a regional level. The survey included more than 50,000 peer nominations from board-certified US physicians, and evaluated 3,691 residency training programs across 20 specialties (view methodology). The founders of Hunterdon Medical Center believed that a quality hospital should be a teaching hospital, and that physicians who participate in ongoing medical education maintain their knowledge of advances in medicine and rise to the challenges set by
“This honor is a testament to over fifty years of commitment to family medicine education, not only by the faculty, but the larger commitment to sustain the culture of medical education by the entire staff of the Hunterdon Medical Center and the community at large,” stated David Skillinge, D.O., Vice President, Physician Practices and Director of Medical Education. Fast, maneuverable, and technically advanced, destroyers provide the required warfighting expertise and operational flexibility to execute any tasking overseas. With multi-mission capabilities in surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, anti-air warfare, ballistic missile defense, and humanitarian assistance, Arleigh Burke destroyers excel as the Navy’s premier fighting warship. Assigned to U.S. Seventh Fleet, Mustin sailors are continuously on watch throughout the Indo-Asia-Pacific region, acting as America’s first responders in that part of the world. As a member of one of the U.S. Navy’s most versatile combat ships, Rush and other Mustin sailors understand they are part of a forward-deployed team that is heavily relied upon to help protect and defend America across the world’s oceans. “The Navy has provided me plenty of opportunity to travel, since college both in Europe and now Asia,” said Rush.

5-Star Excellence Rating for Trinitas Regional Medical Center’s Linden Dialysis Unit among top 10 percent of hospitals nationwide The Linden Dialysis Center of Trinitas Regional Medical Center has received a five-star rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) that places it in the top 10 percent of dialysis centers around the country. CMS instituted a Dialysis Facility Compare site for public reporting of quality measures in 2001; this is the first year the star-rating system for quality measures has been in effect for dialysis centers. Complete details about the reporting system can be found at medicare.gov The Linden facility located at 10 Wood Avenue achieved exceptional results in markers that measure Emergency Department visits, overall hospital admissions, and infection rates. Patients of the Linden center required 40 percent fewer ED visits than the national average, with 43 percent fewer hospital admissions required. The remarkably low rate of infection was less than half of the national average. “This recognition from CMS speaks to the level of care we’ve provided at the Linden Dialysis Center since we opened the location in 1993,” says Joseph McTernen,
Senior Director of Community and Clinical Services for Trinitas. “It’s a designation that affirms the strength of our renal care outcomes.” In conjunction with the Nephrology Department, the Trinitas Renal Services operates two other dialysis centers in Elizabeth, one at 225 Williamson Street and the other at 629 Livingston Street. Renal Services programs focus on chronic kidney disease management as well as kidney disease prevention. Through the Trinitas THRIVE (The High Risk Intervention Via Education) Program, founded at Trinitas 20 years ago by nephrologist Dr. James McAnally, high-risk patients with hypertension and diabetes are counseled and educated on lifestyle changes they can make to delay or even prevent the onset of kidney failure. Through community outreach and screening, McTernan says, Trinitas is taking a proactive stance not only to treat patients experiencing kidney failure, but to prevent the condition in the first place. More information about THRIVE and its success stories can be found at the Trinitas website: http://www.trinitashospital.org/renal_services_thrive.html.
For the Linden Dialysis Center, the CMS five-star designation is a well-earned recognition of the care and service it provides. “We strive to do the right thing by every single patient, every single time,” McTernan says. “We look forward to continuing clinical excellence at each of our centers.” About Trinitas Regional Medical Center Trinitas Regional Medical Center (TRMC), a major center for comprehensive health services for those who live and work in Central New Jersey, is a Catholic teaching medical center sponsored by the Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth in partnership with Elizabethtown Healthcare Foundation. Somerset Vo-Tech Health Occupations majors get practical experience during Matheny visit The Health Occupations program at the Somerset Vocational & Technical High School in Bridgewater, NJ, offers its students the chance to learn about career opportunities in health care. Students participate in clinical experiences at a variety of health care settings, shadowing health care professionals while they are working. Recently, a group of nine Somerset Vo-Tech students visited the Matheny Medical and Educational Center, a special hospital and educational facility in Peapack, NJ, for children and adults with medically complex developmental disabilities. Each of the students identified a discipline of interest and spent a morning observing and assisting therapists and pharmacists while they were working with patients. The students also learned how to communicate with nonverbal patients by using various forms of augmentative communications systems. And they experienced what it’s like to drive a power wheelchair with both a joystick and a head array and complete transfers with a mechanical lift system. SCVT student Megan Flores drives a power wheelchair, assisted by Sean Bielefeldt, Matheny director of recreation therapy. Her reaction: “It’s cool and definitely exciting.”
He earned his Ph.D. in social psychology from Rutgers in 1988 and was a 1991 Mary E. Switzer Fellow of the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research, U.S. Department of Education. He was also founding president of the Alliance for Disability in Health Care Education, Inc., a national nonprofit organization of faculty from medical schools, nursing schools and other health care training programs that are incorporating disability-related experiences into their curricula. Matheny is a special hospital and educational facility in Peapack, NJ, for children and adults with medically complex developmental disabilities. The Matheny Research Institute’s mission is to study and disseminate findings that might enhance the lives of those with severe disabilities, their families and the professionals who work with them. The Institute strives to support and contribute to the knowledge base and repertoire of the field of disability treatment and habilitation.

The Institute for Nursing, the Foundation of the New Jersey State Nurses Association, honored the unique contributions of nineteen New Jersey nurses at their 2014 Divas and Dons in Nursing celebration. Among those honored was Eddie Perez, RN, MHA, NE-BC, Director of Nursing, Medical Surgical Division at St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center, Paterson, NJ. Eddie has been with St. Joseph’s since 2009, when he joined the organization as Nurse Manager of the 33-bed Medical Surgical Unit. In 2010, he was promoted to his current position in which he now oversees seven in-patient units that employ over 250 full-time patient care providers. With responsibilities that range from establishing goals that improve the quality of nursing care, to managing budgets and working collaboratively with other disciplines, Eddie has built cohesiveness among the units. Best practices, uniform in their key processes, are communicated fluidly, resulting in improved quality outcomes and patient care. A highly respected mentor, Eddie is recognized as a resource for success. One of Eddie’s biggest contributions to nursing has been his leadership in the implementation of Transforming Care at the Bedside (TCAB) throughout St. Joseph’s Healthcare System, state-wide and nationally. His expertise of the program has made him a nationally recognized speaker on the topic, and his championing of TCAB has led to its spread onto other nursing units and non-nursing departments within St. Joseph’s. Additionally, in collaboration with the New Jersey Hospitals Association, Eddie serves as the Program Trainer for the TCAB state-wide initiative. “The Divas and Dons event offers organizations the opportunity to nominate a professional registered nurse who has demonstrated outstanding achievement and is a positive influence on others – Eddie has been and continues to be just that,” comments Maria Brennan, DNP, RN, CPHQ, Chief Nursing Officer, SJHS, and Vice President, Patient Care Services, SJRMC. “A sought-after speaker who represents St. Joseph’s on a national level, Eddie is a strong leader who is committed to the Mission of St. Joseph’s Healthcare System, making him an invaluable asset to our superior nursing team,” she adds. Nationally recognized St. Joseph’s Healthcare System, sponsored by the Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth since 1867, is a major academic comprehensive health care institution located in Northern New Jersey.
