Transportation

hat is transportation? Transportation is defined as either the act or process of being transported as well as the means to get passengers or goods from one place to another. Of the many forms of transportation, such as automobiles, boats, busses, cable cars, ferries, planes, and trains, we use a few more often than the other methods. If you needed to travel across the country, to school, or a family member’s house, how would you do it? Would you travel by a plane, bus, car or a train? How would you have travelled if busses, cars, planes, and trains did not exist? The transportation options we have today are a result of how much the world has changed, and how we have improved transportation to meet the needs of today. The first major improvement in transportation was the invention of the steam engine. The steam engine allowed trains to be faster and they became the best option for people wanting to travel longer distances. The alternatives at the time were horse and carriage or streetcars, which took much longer. Trains were also used to transport goods from one place to another, so the ability to transport faster was very beneficial. Today, we have both above and underground train systems. Most underground train systems, such as the Metro in Washington DC, allow you to travel

through the city quickly. If we go back in time to the 1800s, there was an Underground Railroad in the United States, but it did not involve trains. The Underground Railroad began in 1810 and was used until the 1860s. It was a network of secret routes and safe houses used by slaves to escape from slavery in the south to freedom in

4

the north and Canada. It’s believed that the name “Underground Railroad” was chosen because it refers to the underground resistance movement against slavery, and the secret routes were used to transport the escaped slaves like a train would do. The next major change in transportation was the invention of the automobile

KidzBUZZNJ.com

because it improved day to day life and enabled people to travel further and faster on their own. It’s easy to see the appeal of cars because we use them every day. Imagine how much more time a trip from New Jersey to New York would take if you were traveling with a horse and carriage instead of a car. Although, we don’t think of cars as being used to transport people or goods on a large scale, that’s the work of busses and trucks. People use busses to go to school or work every day. Busses are also used all over the world in theme parks such as Disneyland, sightseeing tours use busses in cities like Philadelphia and New York, and bus services transport people across the country every day. Mail services such as FedEx, UPS, and US Mail use trucks to deliver packages and mail across the country every day. Planes were used by the military first, then to transport goods, and finally people used them as commercial transport. The invention of aircrafts made traveling large distances in a short amount of time possible. Airplanes allow us to travel around our country in hours instead of days, weeks or months. It also made international travel possible. In only a few hundred years, we have improved our methods of transportation dramatically and created new ways to travel and transport. We can only wonder what will be next!

Great Things in February PRESIDENTS’ DAY

Presidents’ Day is an American holiday celebrated on the third Monday in February. Originally established in 1885 in recognition of President George Washington, the holiday became popularly known as Presidents’ Day after it was moved as part of 1971’s Uniform Monday Holiday Act, an attempt to create more three-day weekends for the nation’s workers. Presidents’ Day is now popularly viewed as a day to celebrate all U.S. presidents, past and present. BLACK HISTORY MONTH

Black History Month is celebrated annually in the month of February. It is a month to remember both the important people and the important events in Black history. It began in 1926 as an annual

“ What Will Happen?” Good stories have: W ere you ever given a story starter, or the beginning of a story, and asked to complete it and you were stumped? ‘Speculative Writing’, is what they call it, and it can be very challenging. When you speculate, you predict an outcome, and that is what your writing needs to do; tell what the outcome of the story will be. Here are some tips you can use to make it a breeze! Think about good stories you have read before, what made them so good?

1. Developed Characters – dialogue, actions, thoughts. 2. Developed Settings – descriptive sensory details. 3. A Problem – that needs to be solved by the end. 4. Rising Action – actions leading up to a turning point. 5. Turning Point – the plot turns and heads toward a solution.

CCSS.ELA.Literacy.W.5.3B: Use narrative techniques, such as dialogue, description, and pacing, to develop experiences and events or show the responses of characters to situations.

Here are some fun February Speculative Writing Prompts for you to try.

6. Solution – problem is solved. 7. Lesson or Theme to the Story. 8. Taking Risks – metaphors, similes, idioms, personification. Try to include all of these parts and your story will be awesome. If you are given a beginning and asked to write the end of the story, then take time to plan these parts in pre-writing. As you write, go back to this list to check your work for these parts and add them if they are missing. Lastly, remember your ideas can be based on real experiences or you can create any fiction too! Also, remember to have fun!

1. You were just elected President. Write a story about your first day in office. 2. You just got a mystery Valentine’s Day present delivered to your door, write a story about what happens. 3. You are on your way to the Super Bowl, write a story about what happens next. 4. It’s Groundhog Day and something happens. Write the story. 5. Your friend invites you to her Chinese New Year Celebration. Write a story about it.

What’s In a Name?

H

By: Heather Wawrzyniak, Principal, Ashbrook Elementary School, Lumberton, NJ

ow do things get their names? Like, why is a “pencil” called a “pencil” instead of something like a “nerkledoodle”? We cannot trace every word back far enough to know how it was actually named. It’s a matter of convention, which means a way in which something is typically done, or in this case “said”. While it might be fun to give things new names, it would be really difficult for us to communicate and understand each other. So what’s in a name? The great playwright, William Shakespeare said, “A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.” So, no matter what some-

6

KidzBUZZNJ.com

one decides to actually call a rose, it is still beautiful and sweet. It is the symbol of love and beauty. The same can be said about YOU! You were given a name and that is the name by which you are known. Others may try calling you other names. Sometimes name-calling can hurt. That is why name-calling is not nice. However, if you remember it is just a word and think of the rose, you will remember that it doesn’t matter what others say. What really matters is who you really are! You could call a rose an elephant, but no matter what you call it, it is still a delicate, bright flower that smells beautiful

and symbolizes love. When name-calling happens, have the confidence to stand up for yourself and believe in yourself. Use positive self-talk to remind yourself that you are special. Remind yourself that there is no one else in the word quite like you. Think that no matter what names others use, they cannot change who you are on the inside. Be the best you that you can be! Name-calling is not nice and should never happen. But if it does, don’t let it get you down. Be a person that is known for being the person that “rose” above the label. No one can make you feel bad about yourself unless you let them.

Additional Information:

Procedure:

1. First, using the masking tape, label each cup with the type of drink that you plan to pour in it. 2. Pour the drinks into the matching cup. 3. Place one egg in each cup. Be sure that there is enough liquid so the egg is submerged in the cup. 4. Place your cups in a safe location. 5. Allow the eggs to soak several hours or at best, overnight.

Egg shells protect the insides of an egg, just like the enamel (or outside) of our teeth protect the important parts inside. The enamel needs to be properly cared for in order to help keep our teeth from wearing down or decaying. Not only does this include brushing and flossing, but also watching the things we eat and drink. The drinks in this experiment included some that are high in sugar and acid. These two products can be very harmful to your teeth. Sugars decay your teeth and can lead

to cavities while acids can dissolve our enamel causing decay. Keep this experiment in mind the next time you have juice or soda. Think about brushing your teeth after you finish snacking. This will help to cleanse your enamel and protect your teeth for many more bright smiles to come! Remember – you can always talk to your dentist during your annual visit about ways you can help protect your teeth.

FEBRUARY 2018

Check out Buzzer’s picks this month... they are all about great events happening in February.

Groundhog Gets a Say By Pamela Curtis Swallow After the crowds of humans have dispersed, and the events of the day end, the groundhog says, “I don’t get it. Where is everybody? Yesterday I was BIG news! Everyone wanted my weather report. Today . . . nothing!” The Groundhog tells his animal friends that he’s also called a woodchuck, he shows off his fabulous teeth, and teaches them about hibernation. Learn what a groundhog really does the rest of the year and see why he wants February to be Groundhog Appreciation Month.

the Winter Olympics and National Pizza Day and enter to win a Gift Certificate to a great local pizza place

The five Olympic rings represent the five continents in which the athletes traveled from to compete in the Olympic games. The rings are connected to show unity, just as the athletes from around the world come together to compete. When it comes to pizza, no two are alike. There are so many toppings of all different colors, textures and tastes that the flavors come together to form a great pizza. So when you want to order a pizza on February 9th to celebrate National Pizza Day and sit down to watch the Olympic games (February 9 – 25), use your creativity to combine the two ideas.

Here is the challenge:

Draw a pizza (on unlined paper) and include 5 toppings that symbolize the 5 colors of the Olympic rings (you can choose a topping that matches a color or a topping that starts with the first letter of a color).

* Use the Bee Published form in the paper to submit your entry. Submissions should be received by the 15th of each month in order to be eligible to win.

Math, Science &Teeth

February is National Children’s Dental Health Month, and what better time to see how much fun it can be to take care of your teeth.

While we know that Math is all around us, how about a fun survey. There are so many flavors of toothpaste, and many have their favorite. Do a survey in class, or at home, to find out the most popular, or favorite, toothpaste flavors. Will it be mint, bubble gum, fruit flavored? Graph the results and see what flavor wins. If it’s not your favorite, you might want to check it out the next time you have to buy toothpaste. When it comes to Science, here are two fun and interesting experiments to try. You will see the power of taking care of your teeth right before your very eyes.

Ceramic Tiles for Teeth Ask your parents to get you some small white ceramic tiles from a tile store. Then have an adult help you gather a variety of food products to smear on the tiles like jelly, ketchup, syrup, peanut butter etc. Then, take a new and clean toothbrush and real toothpaste and brush the tiles (teeth). Which tiles are stained? Can you imagine if these tiles were your teeth?!

Egg and Vinegar Take a hard boiled egg, still in the shell, and put it in a cup of vinegar for a couple of days. Watch what happens to the shell. Imagine this is your tooth enamel protecting your teeth.
