JANUARY 2018

A message from the Regional Superintendent Dear Staten Island Catholic School families, Happy New Year and Welcome to 2018! Every New Year I reflect on the wonderful gift that God has given the leaders of our schools. Each new year brings a chance to make a difference in the lives of children! January will be a very busy month for our school communities. On January 9th and 30th we will be hosting Touring Tuesday open houses from 9 to 11 a.m. Be sure to spread the word and invite a friend to tour your school. We will finish the month by celebrating Catholic Schools Week. This is an annual event sponsored by National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA)

which highlights Catholic schools across the nation, and this year’s theme is “Catholic Schools: Learn. Serve. Lead. Succeed.” During Catholic Schools Week, schools typically observe the week with Masses, open houses and other activities for students, families, parishioners and community members. Through these events, schools focus on the value Catholic education provides to young people and its contribution to Church, local communities and the nation. Be sure to check out your school’s website for updates as the week draws near.

A Staten Island tradition is our annual Catholic Schools Week Mass where each of our 22 elementary schools and 7 high schools send student representatives to the Mass to celebrate as one Catholic community. It’s a great kick off to CSW! This year, the Mass will be held on Sunday, January 28th, 2018 at St. Charles Church at 12 noon. Please consider joining us for this wonderful celebration of our schools and our students.

Happy New Year!

Zoilita M. Herrera, Regional Superintendent

The Holy Childhood of Jesus: “Look at the birds in the sky!” (Mt 6:26) Are you fascinated by animals? Children have a special gift for being moved in awe and wonder before the world of animals. Did you

know Jesus experienced this, too? The Catholic Church dedicates the month of January to the Holy Childhood of Jesus. This month, reflect on how Jesus was once the same age as you! He grew up under the guidance of his parents, Joseph

and Mary, and “was obedient to them” . . . developing in “wisdom and age and favor” (Lk 2:51-52). Birds have been used as Christian symbols to help us think about the human soul’s ascent (movement upwards) to God. Try to complete

the crossword puzzle below of birds used as Christian symbols. Answers include: robin, sparrow, peacock, blackbird, geese, partridge, pelican, stork, dove, rooster, goldfinch, sparrow

The Sybolism of Birds in the Bible

Values Infusion Program: The Value for the Month of January is Self-Discipline How does self-discipline help you to love and experience happiness? “For God did not give us a spirit of cowardice but rather of power and love and self-control” (2 Timothy 1:7).

Birds That Do Not Migrate M

igration is defined as the seasonal movement of animals from one region to another. Of all migrating animals, we witness bird migration the most because we can see them fly south for the winter and north for the summer. There are three main reasons why birds migrate: food sources, climate, and predators. If birds know that their food source is not secure for the winter, they migrate to ensure their survival. Birds will also migrate from a warmer region to a colder region or from a colder region to a warmer region to raise their young. Predators can influence migration because birds will migrate to give their young a better chance of survival and to avoid their predators. However, there are many species of birds that adapted to living in the same place year round and learned how to have enough food during the winter. This type of bird is called a permanent resident, otherwise known as non-migratory bird, because they stay in their homes year round. Birds that do not migrate usually need to adapt their food sources to survive during the fall and winter. For example, if the bird eats berries and seeds

The following are a few types of birds we may see this winter! • Cardinal • Mockingbird • Hummingbird • Great Horned Owl • Barred Owl • Raven • Black Vulture

primarily in the spring or summer, then they will eat fruit and nuts in the fall and winter. Additionally, many birds will catch food and hide it so they can store food for the winter. Molting is another technique non-migratory birds use to stay in the same area year round. Non-migratory birds will molt between the end of summer and beginning of fall. By molting, the birds gain a protective layer of insulating down feathers which help to preserve body heat and protect them from the extreme cold. Sometimes the birds will molt again in the spring to make way for brighter plumage or to shed excess feathers. Non-migratory birds are known to be more aggressive, curious, intelligent, and have dominant personalities. Their aggression and dominant personalities may be a result of needing to defend their territories from intruders. The birds’ curiosity and intelligence can help in their investigations for new food sources and shelter. Non-migratory birds create mixed flocks with other birds to forage during the winter. They also are known to roost together to share body heat.

New Year’s Resolutions for a New School Year

o you want a new pet? Do you want your bedtime to be later? Do you want more recess time at school? Do you want your community to build a recreation center or add more playgrounds? Do you have an awesome idea to make a favorite game better? If you answered yes to any of these questions, or have something else in mind that you want, then use a writing technique to get your way! Write a persuasive letter. To persuade means to convince someone to do something through reasoning and argument. This is as easy as 1, 2, 3! Follow these simple steps and make your wish come true.

Here are the three steps to write a successful persuasive letter:

1.

Your opening sentence needs to state your opinion, and/or what your wish is.

2.

You need to follow that with at least 3 good reasons that will support your idea/opinion/wish. Focus on who the audience/reader is and what their counter-arguments are going to be when you write these reasons. Research facts to support your opinion that will convince your audience. This is the most important part of your letter.

3.

Your closing sentence needs to demand an action from the reader. You are now ready to go and get your wish!

TTohe S ecret Getting Your Wish!

Here is a good example for you to read before you start your own! Dear Principal Johnson, We need more recess time! If we have more recess time we are going to be more focused in the classroom, behave better and have higher test scores! In a study done by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, they found that children that had 20 minutes of walking answered the test questions more correctly then children that were sitting. Secondly, more recess means less students will be sent to you for poor behavior. In another study they proved that the students who had an extra ten-minute period of physical activity added daily, had a higher amount of on-task behaviors! Lastly, it has also been

proven that students had a 20-point gain on their standardized test scores when additional physical activity was added to their school day. With better test grades, good behavior, and higher state scores, more students will achieve honor roll and you will have happier kids and parents! This is a, “Win-Win”, decision for you. Go to the Superintendent and get more recess time approved for our school today! Sincerely, Persuasive Patty

Writing Prompt: Write a persuasive letter to someone using these steps. CCSS.ELA-Literacy W5.1: Write opinion and reasons using words, phrases, and clauses

Would You Rather?

By: Heather Wawrzyniak, Principal, Ashbrook Elementary School, Lumberton, NJ

W W

ould You Rather is a popular game that forces you to make tough choices, usually between two crazy things, like would you rather have a pet dinosaur or a pet dragon? The game can be silly and fun. Having choices is a great freedom, but making the right choice can sometimes be tricky because EVERY choice has a consequence. When you make good choices, good consequences happen. When you make bad choices, bad consequences happen. Many times making the RIGHT choice is not what you would rather do, it means making the choice that has the best outcome.

6

Let’s try a new game. Instead of would you rather, let’s play what is better?

3. What is better? Being mean to someone or being kind to someone?

1. What is better? Eating 10 pieces of candy or eating 10 carrots?

Hopefully, being kind to someone would be the would you rather AND it is the what is better choice, too. Science has found that being kind is good for the other person and also good for YOUR health. Kindness can prevent illness, ease anxiety, is good for your heart and could help you live longer.

If we were playing would you rather, many of us might choose the candy. But the what is better answer would be carrots. Carrots are good for your overall health especially your skin, eyes, digestive system and teeth. Sugar is not.

2. What is better? Playing video games for 30 minutes or reading for 30 minutes? If we were playing would you rather, some might choose video games. But the what is better answer would be reading. Reading reduces stress, increases knowledge, builds vocabulary and helps improve memory. Video games do not.

KidzBUZZNJ.com

You make dozens of choices everyday. Making good choices takes lots of practice and lots of thought. Making the right choices can be the difference between having a great day or having a bad day. Project Wisdom puts it this way, “Make it a great day or not, the choice is yours!” Start your new year off right by choosing what’s right.

The Mighty Ice Mountains By: Catherine DiDomenico Demarco Jetting from the ocean, sometimes miles high, These Ice Mountains soar from the sea to the sky, From Tide Water to Piedmont, these glaciers are many, In Alaska, for example, one can find plenty, Up to 100,000 glaciers call Alaska their home, Only 650 have a name of their own. Glaciers are formed by layers of snow Each sits on each other having no place to go. As the snow falls, it gathers plants, soil, and rocks, The debris gets stuck forming layers of rot Massive rivers of frozen snow are then formed, Pulled down by gravity from mountain tops where they’re born You may think these Ice Mountains could never move, But the soft ice melt below causes them to glide slow and smooth, The slow moving ice causes big slabs to fall off, Calving, it’s called, due to the ice getting soft, When these massive pieces of ice cascade to the sea, It sounds like a cannon blast from which you should flee, And why does glacier ice appear blue? Because when all other colors are reflected, Poor captured blue knows not what to do, One more thought before you go, This alarming fact you simply must know, Sadly, our glaciers have receded at a great rate, Due to rising ocean temperatures and pollution, our experts state. So raise awareness, do all you can do, To save our magnificent Ice Mountains of Blue. As fifth graders study the Western Hemisphere, they will have the opportunity to interpret and illustrate a collection of poems about Alaska. Some of the poems will be included in upcoming editions of Kidz Buzz. Artwork from each school will be showcased at The Golden Cross Award for Education Breakfast in April.

Art and Math

id you know that art is often related to math? One artist who often used math to create his work is M.C. Escher. Take a look at this drawing, Two Birds, which he completed in 1938. What do you see? Look more carefully…do you see birds flying in two directions? You might wonder how he did that! Well, he used math. It’s a special type of math called a tessellation. A tessellation is created when a shape is repeated over and over again, covering the surface of the paper, without any gaps or overlaps. Another word

Step 1

Step 2

for a tessellation is a tiling. Can you see how this picture is a bit like tiles on the floor? It would cover the whole floor without any gaps. Ancient Greeks decorated their homes with tessellations. Persian and Islamic artists also created spectacular tessellating designs. You can make a tessellation too – it’s pretty easy if you have an index card. Here’s how you do it. Step 1: Take an index card and place it in front of you. Draw a line from top to bottom. Make it

Step 3

Step 4

pretty simple the first time you are trying this! Step 2: Cut along the line you drew. Step 3: Tape the piece on the other side of the index card. Step 4: Then draw a line across the middle. Step 5: Again, cut along the line. This time tape the piece along the top of the index card. Step 6: Use your imagination to draw a picture. Step 7: Then, use your shape to create a tile pattern on a larger paper. Have fun making your own tessellations!

unt and peck, one finger at a time, two thumbs, two hands? Which one describes your typing style? The most efficient and effective way to type on a keyboard is by using both hands on the “home row” of keys. You can find the home row of keys by placing your hands on the keyboard with your right index finger on the “J” key and your left index finger on the “F” key. Knowing how to find home row is the first step toward becoming a more proficient typist, but

practice is the only way to increase your speed and accuracy. NitroType. com is a great website designed to make typing fun. This free site allows you to race in real time with other people all over the world. The faster you type, the faster your virtual car zooms across the screen. NitroType is anonymous and safe for all ages to use. So if you’re tired of hunting and pecking for keys on a keyboard, try practicing your typing skills by visiting NitroType.com.

Mastering mathematics. Counting blessings.

Invest in a Catholic education when it makes the most difference. Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of New York offer a unique combination of academic and spiritual development that helps children of all backgrounds get the best start in life. Our students learn in an environment where respect, courtesy and service to others are always part of the curriculum—and they are outpacing New York State and New York City public school students in both Math and English Language Arts (ELA) proficiency standards. We invite you to see the value of a Catholic education: schedule a tour at a nearby school at any time, or attend one of the upcoming TOURING TUESDAY open house events being held at 133 participating Catholic elementary schools—including 22 on Staten Island. Open Houses: January 9 & January 30 from 9-11am.
