Safe Winter Play Are you looking forward to snowy days where you can play, sled, skate and build snowmen with your friends? Playing outside in the cold is so much fun, but you still have to remember to be safe. Follow these steps for a winter full of fun: · · ·
Always play outside with friends and/or a parent. Choose a warm shelter when you need a break (your home-base or a friends house). Apply sunscreen to exposed skin (faces) to keep skin safe.
· · · · · ·
Dress in layered clothing so that you can take on and off easily if too hot or cold. Always wear a hat since a lot of body heat is lost through the head. Keep your ears covered at all times to prevent frostbite. Wear mittens instead of gloves so that your fingers can stay bunched together for warmth. Never wear clothing with drawstrings that could catch on climbing or play equipment, or sleds. Use a neck warmer instead of a scarf to prevent choking.
· · ·
· ·
·
Remove wet clothing and boots as soon as you get inside to get warm quickly. Stay far away from snowplows and snow blowers. Never sled into or play near a street. Be careful when crossing a street because you may be hard to see above the snow banks piled on the side of the road. If playing with snowballs, they should never be aimed at people or cars. Don’t put metal objects in your mouth because lips and tongues can freeze to the metal and cause injury. Always wear a ski or hockey helmet when sledding (not a bicycle
· · · · · ·
·
helmet). Don’t eat snow – it is dirty. Use a sled that you can steer to give you better control. Remember to sit up or kneel on a sled, lying down can increase the risk of head, neck or back injury. Obey signs if skating on ice, and skate on public indoor or outdoor rinks (not lakes or ponds). Never assume that it’s safe to skate or walk on a lake or pond. Play during the day so that you stay safe in the daylight and the temperature doesn’t get too cold. Remember to stay hydrated by taking breaks to get drinks and snacks.
Narwhals
By Laura Edwards If you have seen a picture of a unicorn, then you’ll understand why narwhals are called unicorns of the sea! Male narwhals have one large tusk which grows from their tooth in a straight direction. Narwhals are easily recognized by their tusk, and it continues to grow throughout their life. The male narwhal’s tusk is made of ivory, can grow to be 4.9 to 10.2 feet in length, and can weigh more than 22 pounds! Male narwhals’ second tooth and female narwhals’ only tooth remains embedded in the skull, and it can grow to be one foot in length. The purpose of the tusk is unknown, but many researchers believe that it could be involved in courtship, finding food through echolocation, and measuring barometric pressure. The narwhal’s tusk is hollow, shaped in a spiral, and has 10 million nerve endings. In addition to having large teeth, narwhals are massive creatures. They are related to beluga whales, dolphins, porpoises, and orcas. Narwhals are between 13 and 18 feet in length and weigh between 1,760 and 3,530 pounds. When they’re born, baby narwhals are generally five feet long and they can weigh up to 175 pounds! Narwhals change color as they get older. Newborn narwhals vary from blue to gray in color, and young narwhals are blue or black in color. Adult narwhals are a mottled gray color, and older narwhals are almost white in color. Although they don’t have a dorsal fin like most whales, narwhals do have a short flippers which help them navigate the water and rear flukes to propel themselves forward. Narwhals live in the Arctic waters near Canada, Greenland, and Russia. They

·
are migratory, so they spend the summer off of the coast and they travel away from the coast during the winter to avoid getting stuck under ice. There are approximately 75,000 narwhals in world, and they can live up to 50 years! They swim in pods made up of 10 to 100 narwhals. They are able to dive as deep as 4,290 feet and can stay underwater for 25 minutes! Their diet is made up of halibut, polar and Arctic cod, shrimp, and squid.
What else is there to know about narwhals? - They communicate through clicks, whistles, and knocks - Narwhals can produce up to 1,000 clicks per second - Narwhals are also called moon whales - Narwhals do not feed as much during the summer because they have food stored from the winter

Make the World a Better Place
D
id you know that you can make the world a better place? In fact, you probably already do make the world a better place every day without realizing it! Whether you treat others the way that you want to be treated, or do random acts of kindness, your actions have an impact. It’s easy to doubt that one person can make a difference. However, when you take steps every day to improve yourself, your actions will inspire others to do the same. Three of the most important steps to take are to treat everyone with respect, do not judge especially because you do not know what other people are going through, and educate yourself so you are aware of faiths, traditions, or customs that are different than your own. By starting with these steps, we will be able to reach more people and make the world a better place every day! There are many ways that we can make a difference on our own. For example, we can hold the door for the person behind us or smile at people that we pass on the street. But, we can make a bigger impact with some help. The following are a few other things that we can do on our own, or with the help of our family.
DECEMBER 2017
Do positive things · Donate clothes, toys, and food to those in need · Listen without judging others · Be positive · Focus on the good · Adopt a pet · Don’t litter · Recycle · Take care of yourself · Don’t focus too much on mistakes · Give a person in need your seat while waiting for or traveling on a bus or train · Be considerate · Say thank you · Volunteer for a cause · Give a gift without expecting anything in return · Compliment someone · Read positive stories about hope and love · Give people your full attention · Be patient · Be grateful Continue to Make the World a Better Place.

Tea Anyone?
“Awe, I can’t believe this!” “What’s wrong?” my best friend Abby said. “I have to write this essay about a time in US History. I decided to write about the Boston Tea Party, since it happened on December 16th. I just got done reading my Social Studies book about it. I know all of the facts, but now I’m stumped! My teacher said my writing should make the event come alive for my readers and I don’t even know where to begin!?!” “Sounds like you need to wake up those five senses and travel back in time and experience it”, Abby said with a mysterious look. “Sure, but how can we do that?” I said. “Take a sip of this tea and just let your sens-
es take over!” she answered. “OMG, it’s so dark in here, what is all that commotion I hear, where are we?” “Shhhhh, we are in the closet at the town meeting hall in Boston, it is December 16, 1773.” Abby whispered. “Who is that man speaking?” “That’s Samuel Adams, shhhh listen up, he’s yelling at the crowd!” Sam Adams: “My fellow Sons of Liberty, first it was the Stamp Act, then the Sugar Act. They nearly ruined us. We had no say in these taxes that the King of England has put on us! I see men with faces red with anger.
Writing Prompt: Choose a Historical Event to recreate with sensory details. CCSS.ELA.Literacy.W.5.3D: Use concrete words and phrases and sensory details to convey experiences and events precisely.
Sam Adams starts to talk again, “Now, he is passing another Tax, the Tea Act! The time has come, we must protest. This is taxation without representation!!!” The whole crowd is running out the door! We follow them. It is dark and very cold. I can see my breath in front of me. I hear the crowd shouting. I see the boats in the harbor, floating at the docks. I can hear the water slapping the sides of the ship. The crowd piles on the ship, brown containers are flying through the air and plunging into the sea. A man starts to shout, “Only the Tea, throw only the Tea overboard!” I look out and see hundreds of mini islands of Tea floating away!
Another man screams, “The Redcoats are coming!” I see men arrive in red uniforms and funny tri-pointed hats. They stare out into the sea of tea before them. One says, “They are gone and the damage is done!” “Time for another sip of my tea,” Abby says as she pulls out her sports bottle. The warm sweetness touches my tongue and as I swallow I see my desk, my Social Studies book and my paper. “Yay, I love my room! We are back and my
paper is complete!” “Remember that writing is easy if you let your senses do the work!” Abby yelled.
Which Right Is Right? Knowing which right is right can be tricky. When choosing which right is right consider the following: 1. Will my actions hurt me? By: Heather Wawrzyniak, Principal, Ashbrook Elementary School, Lumberton, N.J.
The word “right” has many meanings. It can mean what is good or acceptable (doing the right thing). It can also mean true or correct (the right answer). Finally, it can mean a legal entitlement, freedom (you have the right to vote when you are 18). As American citizens, we have many rights (freedoms). But how do you know which right (freedom) is the right (correct) or right (good) thing to do? When considering which right is right, it is important in a free country to understand that the many cultures that make up our nation have different beliefs or customs. A
6
great example of this are the many holidays celebrated around this time of year in the United States such as Diwali, Christmas, Hanukkah, Saturnalia, Kwanzaa, Yule or Lunar New Year. There is no ONE holiday that is right to celebrate. It is your right to celebrate the ones your family believes are right for your family based on your culture, religion, or values and beliefs. Standing up for what is right (good) is not easy because people may have different ideas or opinions about what is right. It is everyone’s right to have an opinion or differing beliefs. Therefore, standing up for what is right can be difficult at times because of these differences. A great example of what was right in history would be Rosa Park’s bravery to stand up (or sit down in this case) for civil rights.
KidzBUZZNJ.com
2. Will my actions hurt others?
3. Will my actions make the world around me better? If your answers to these questions are no, no, and yes then go for it! Be an upstander. If your actions help you to stand up for what is right (good) without harming anyone, then you’ve made the right (correct) choice. You will be well on your way to learning which right is right!

Sound in Motion: Salt Dance Experiment Sound SoundininMotion: Motion:Salt SaltDance DanceExperiment Experiment
Have you ever thought about how you can hear sound everywhere, but you can’t see it? Try this simple experiment and you might catch a glimpse of how sound is truly waves in motion! All you need are a few things found around the house. Background Information:
Sound is a type of energy that is caused by vibrations. When an object vibrates, it causes the air particles to move. These particles continuously bump into one another, causing a disturbance in the air. We call the movement of particles, sound waves. Sound waves can vibrate through solids, air, and water.

And Then It’s Spring
King Derwin of the Kingdom of Didd grumbled at the sky. He growled at the spring’s rain, the summer’s sunshine, the autumn’s fog, and the winter’s snow. “Every year the same four things! I’m mighty tired of those old things! I want something NEW to come down!” The magicians promise the king a new substance to fall from the sky: OOBLECK... a sticky green mysterious substance. Find out what happens when the King’s wish comes true but the Oobleck gets bigger and bigger.
Readers will enjoy the anticipation of the next season as they read page by page. They see the brown of late winter/early spring slowly change to the full green of spring. Experience, as you read, the impatient time between late winter and spring, when you balance between your winter coat and gloves to your spring coat at the first sign of warm sun. As you wait for spring, pay attention to the changing sounds, smells, tastes and sights around

Did you know that snow crystals need “specks” of dirt, ash, salt, or bacteria to start growing into snowflakes? Did you know six-sided snow crystals can be shaped like stars, plates, or columns? Did you know they’re rarely perfect? Or that a snowflake is actually made up of many different snow crystals? The great illustrations show, step by step, how water vapor sticks to the speck and grows into a hexagon-shaped ice crystal with six branches or arms.
