Don’t forget that this time of year also has us thinking ahead to the New Year and changes that we’d like to make. Read about how to make the world a better place by doing positive things in Buzzworthy and learn about which right is right in Character Counts. Spend some time during the holiday break from school thinking about new things you’d like to try next year...maybe a new sport, food, activity...maybe you want to read more, study harder, help around the house. Whatever it is, these will be great goals for you in 2018.

We wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. I include here this month one of our favorite poems about our Lord, Jesus Christ. It causes us to reflect on the gift that God has given us - His only Son. This Christmas season, pause to remember those that make a difference in your lives and celebrate the birth of our Lord.

On December 3, the Catholic Church celebrates the First Sunday of Advent which begins a liturgical season that lasts for four weeks. This time is given to us by the Church, so that we can spiritually prepare for the birth of Jesus, which we celebrate on December 25. In church, pay attention to the color the priest wears and the color of the cloth on the altar. What is it? It is purple, the color of penance and preparation. Advent is a time to ask God to forgive us for our sins as we prepare for the arrival of the baby Jesus. God enters the world as a baby on Christmas, because He wants to be loved by us!

Make the World a Better Place
D
id you know that you can make the world a better place? In fact, you probably already do make the world a better place every day without realizing it! Whether you treat others the way that you want to be treated, or do random acts of kindness, your actions have an impact. It’s easy to doubt that one person can make a difference. However, when you take steps every day to improve yourself, your actions will inspire others to do the same. Three of the most important steps to take are to treat everyone with respect, do not judge especially because you do not know what other people are going through, and educate yourself so you are aware of faiths, traditions, or customs that are different than your own. By starting with these steps, we will be able to reach more people and make the world a better place every day! There are many ways that we can make a difference on our own. For example, we can hold the door for the person behind us or smile at people that we pass on the street. But, we can make a bigger impact with some help. The following are a few other things that we can do on our own, or with the help of our family.

Tea Anyone?
“Awe, I can’t believe this!” “What’s wrong?” my best friend Abby said. “I have to write this essay about a time in US History. I decided to write about the Boston Tea Party, since it happened on December 16th. I just got done reading my Social Studies book about it. I know all of the facts, but now I’m stumped! My teacher said my writing should make the event come alive for my readers and I don’t even know where to begin!?!” “Sounds like you need to wake up those five senses and travel back in time and experience it”, Abby said with a mysterious look. “Sure, but how can we do that?” I said. “Sure, but how can we do that?” I said.
“Take a sip of this tea and just let your senses take over!” she answered. “OMG, it’s so dark in here, what is all that commotion I hear, where are we?” “Shhhhh, we are in the closet at the town meeting hall in Boston, it is December 16, 1773.” Abby whispered. “Who is that man speaking?” “That’s Samuel Adams, shhhh listen up, he’s yelling at the crowd!” Sam Adams: “My fellow Sons of Liberty, first it was the Stamp Act, then the Sugar Act. They nearly ruined us. We had no say in these taxes that the King of England has put on us!

I see men with faces red with anger. Sam Adams starts to talk again, “Now, he is passing another Tax, the Tea Act! The time has come, we must protest. This is taxation without representation!!!” The whole crowd is running out the door! We follow them. It is dark and very cold. I can see my breath in front of me. I hear the crowd shouting. I see the boats in the harbor, floating at the docks. I can hear the water slapping the sides of the ship. The crowd piles on the ship, brown containers are flying through the air and plunging into the sea. A man starts to shout, “Only the Tea, throw only the Tea overboard!” I look out and see hundreds of mini islands
of Tea floating away! Another man screams, “The Redcoats are coming!” I see men arrive in red uniforms and funny tri-pointed hats. They stare out into the sea of tea before
them. One says, “They are gone and the damage is done!” “Time for another sip of my tea,” Abby says as she pulls out her sports bottle. The warm sweetness touches my tongue and as I swallow I see my desk, my Social Studies book and my paper. “Yay, I love my room! We are back and my
paper is complete!” “Remember that writing is easy if you let your senses do the work!” Abby yelled.
Which Right Is Right? Knowing which right is right can be tricky. When choosing which right is right consider the following: 1. Will my actions hurt me? The word “right” has many meanings. It can mean what is good or acceptable (doing the right thing). It can also mean true or correct (the right answer). Finally, it can mean a legal entitlement, freedom (you have the right to vote when you are 18). As American citizens, we have many rights (freedoms). But how do you know which right (freedom) is the right (correct) or right (good) thing to do? When considering which right is right, it is important in a free country to understand that the many cultures that make up our nation have different beliefs or customs. A great example of this are the many holidays celebrated around this time of year in the United

States such as Diwali, Christmas, Hanukkah, Saturnalia, Kwanzaa, Yule or Lunar New Year. There is no ONE holiday that is right to celebrate. It is your right to celebrate the ones your family believes are right for your family based on your culture, religion, or values and beliefs. Standing up for what is right (good) is not easy because people may have different ideas or opinions about what is right. It is everyone’s right to have an opinion or differing beliefs. Therefore, standing up for what is right can be difficult at times because of these differences. A great example of what was right in history would be Rosa Park’s bravery to stand up (or sit down in this case) for civil rights.

Have you ever thought about how you can hear sound everywhere, but you can’t see it? Try this simple experiment and you might catch a glimpse of how sound is truly waves in motion! All you need are a few things found around the house. Background Information:
Sound is a type of energy that is caused by vibrations. When an object vibrates, it causes the air particles to move. These particles continuously bump into one another, causing a disturbance in the air. We call the movement of particles, sound waves. Sound waves can vibrate through solids, air, and water.

Materials:
• 1 glass bowl • Parchment paper • 1 large rubber band • Salt or colored sand • Food color (optional) • A portable bluetooth speaker • Phone with music or free tone app like Simple Tone Generator or Tone Generator Pro
Procedure:
** Optional - if you want your sand to stand out against the parchment paper, you can dye it with some food coloring. Just be sure it dries before trying the experiment. ** 1. Place your bluetooth speaker inside the glass bowl. 2. Cover the bowl with parchment paper and use the rubber band to secure it

around the bowl. 3. Spread the salt or colored sand over top of the parchment paper. 4. Turn on your music or tone app and connect it to your bluetooth speaker. Experiment with different notes or songs. 5.What happens to the salt as you play high- or low-pitched sounds? What does the salt look like when the tones or sounds happen? Do different songs make the salt move in different ways? Have fun dancing along with your salt!

Melting Snowmen Cookie Balls Ingredients
1 pkg. (8 oz.) PHILADELPHIA Cream Cheese, softened 24 vanilla sandwich cookies, finely crushed (about 3 cups) 3 pkg. (4 oz. each) BAKER’S White Chocolate, broken into pieces, melted 48 Mini OREO Bite Size Cookies 2 Tbsp. decorating icing
Directions
1. Mix cream cheese and cookie crumbs until blended. 2. Shape into 48 (1-inch) balls; place in single layer in shallow pan. Freeze 10 min. 3. Dip balls in melted chocolate; place in shallow waxed paper-lined pan, allowing excess chocolate to pool at bottom of each ball. 4. Decorate with remaining ingredients to resemble snowmen. 5. Refrigerate 1 hour or until firm. Keep refrigerated until ready to serve. Prep Time: 30 min. / Total Time 2hr. / Servings: 48

Christmas – Percent of a number
By: Dr. Susan B. Miller, Director of Math Instruction, Archdiocese of New York As we approach the Christmas season, there are many ways that math becomes a critical part of our lives. While you may be making that special list for Santa, you may also be thinking of presents for your parents, siblings, and friends. No one ever has as much money to spend as they might like, so it’s best to shop when there are sales. You might see signs that say 25% off, 50% off, or even 75% off! Do you know there are some quick ways to figure out the new price? When an item is 10% off, that means that the item is discounted by 10%, and you pay the remaining 90%. We can easily figure out 10%, since that is one tenth of the amount. To find one tenth of the amount, we can divide by 10. Take a moment and think through these questions. What is 30 ÷ 10? What is 90 ÷ 10? What is 120 ÷ 10? You are probably seeing a pattern. When we divide by 10, we move the decimal over one place to the left. Therefore, 30 ÷ 10 = 3. 90 ÷ 10 = 9. 120 ÷ 10 is 12. Do you see how we can quickly divide by 10? What about 5% off? Well, we can find the 5% off, by finding 10% off, and dividing that in half. So, if 10% of 40 is 4, then 5% of 40 is half of that, or 2! Let’s try another. Can you fill in the missing blanks? If 10% of 60 is ____, then 5% of 60 is _____. In the same way, if we know 10% of the number, we can
find 20% or 30% pretty easily too! 20% is two sections of the 10%. So if 10% of 70 is 7, then 20% of 70 is 2 groups of 7, or 14. 30% of 70 is 3 groups of 7, which is 21. Let’s put this all together. Again, you can fill in the blanks. Imagine you want to buy a special sweater for your mom. The original price is $20, but the sign says it is 30% off. So, 10% of 20 is ____, therefore 30% is three groups of ____ which is _____. So, if the sweater is 30% off, that means the price is discounted by $6, and now only costs $14! Are you ready for a harder one? What if the jacket for your dad is originally $40, but it discounted 15%. Can you find 10%? Can you find 5%? Then you can find 15%! Let’s give it a try. The $40 is discounted 15% which is 10% + 5%. 10% of 40 is _____. 5% of 40 is _____ (hint – it’s going to be half of the 10% amount your just wrote!). So, therefore, 15% of 40 is the sum of those two amounts which is ______. If the jacket is originally $40 and it’s now $6 off, how much does the jacket cost? Now you are all set to shop the sales!! Most importantly, during this special season, don’t forget to COUNT your blessings, ADD love, and TAKE AWAY loneliness.

Did you know that snow crystals need “specks” of dirt, ash, salt, or bacteria to start growing into snowflakes? Did you know six-sided snow crystals can be shaped like stars, plates, or columns?
