November breezes mean that Thanksgiving is just around the corner. This edition is filled with great opportunities to be thankful for all of the great things around you. You can read about the many branches of the military and how we celebrate Veterans Day in honor of our veterans to thank them for their sacrifices and their service to our country in Buzzworthy. We have a great opportunity to recognize heroes that are currently serving in our US Military by writing letters of gratitude for all that they have done, and continue to do, for our freedom. Read more about it in Write to the Point and visit www.OperationGratitude.com for more information. Buzzer’s Bookshelf is also filled with wonderful books about heroes, honor and family. We hope you had a fun Halloween, and to keep you in the mood a little bit longer as you’re still enjoying your candy from trick-or-treating, check out the Halloween-Toons in the Cartooning page and try to draw a witch or Frankenstein. If puzzles are your thing, you don’t want to miss the Brain Buzz section where we have Thanksgiving challenges with a Turkey Maze, Turkey Sudoku, and more.

As always, this edition has a fun and colorful cover to let you know about great locations around town. If you haven’t visited or checked them out, give them a call and tell them that you saw them in Kidz Buzz. You also don’t want to forget to enter the contest for a great opportunity to win a gift card, send in your original artwork to be published in our next edition, and send in your birthday to be entered to win a free birthday party. There is so much to be thankful for this month, and we hope that you take some time to tell the people in your lives how much you appreciate them.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Your friend,

A message from the Regional Superintendent I am so excited to write to you about the great things that are happening in our Staten Island Catholic Schools. We just finished celebrating Columbus Day and Halloween and now onto Veterans Day and Thanksgiving! Before you know it, Christmas will be upon us. We began last month with a visit from Timothy Cardinal Dolan who celebrated a beautiful Mass at St. Teresa Church on October 5th. Followed by, Sr. Jeanine Conlon, St. Charles, being honored by students for her work in obtaining over $22K in donations from the Stop & Shop program to benefit the Blended Learning program at the school. Approximately 100 teachers attended a workshop with Author, Susan Raisch on the topic of Anti-bullying, on October 4th and 13th. By the way, did you see the students and families of Our Lady Queen of Peace and Our Lady Help of Christians on their spirit walks? Honk if

Veterans Day is November 11th, and the Annual Veterans Breakfast held at St. Adalbert School on November 8th is a wonderful way to honor our Veterans who have sacrificed so much for our freedoms. Don’t forget to recommend a friend to tour your school at our first Touring Tuesday Open House to be held on November 14th from 9-11 a.m. at all Staten Island Catholic Schools. you love Catholic Schools! November is the time of year that we reflect on what we are most grateful for in our lives. I am proud of the Staten Island Catholic elementary school families, who raised over $61,000 for the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston to help our fellow students in need. Faith in action, indeed!

Fall is in the air, leaves are changing and the holidays are approaching. Enjoy the season. Sincerely,

Celebrating All Saints & All Souls

Did you know that the Catholic Church begins the month of November with two great feast days? On November 1 we celebrate “All Saints,” and on November 2 we celebrate “All Souls.” The Church also dedicates the entire month of November to the Souls in Purgatory. Purgatory is the experience of final purification for souls after death which prepares them for the fullness of joy in Heaven. It is beautiful to remember our family and friends (including all the saints, who are also our friends!) that have gone before us and continue to accompany us, pray for us, and help us in our lives now, so that one day we may be united with them in Heaven.

Celebrating Military Saints This month, you can pray for all the men, women, and their families who serve our country in the military.

NOVEMBER 2017

You can pray in thanksgiving for their service and also for their safety. Did you know there are many Catholic saints who were soldiers and served in the military, too? By working in the military, they were able to grow in holiness by affirming the values of justice, peace, and sacrifice. Some of these saints are listed below. Can you match their names with their descriptions?

1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

_____ St. Michael the Archangel _____ St. Joan of Arc _____ Fr. Vincent Capodanno* _____ St. Ignatius of Loyola _____ St. Sebastian _____ St. Martin of Tours

A. Born in Staten Island, served as a US Navy chaplain during the Vietnam War B. A martyr, patron of soldiers and athletes, pictures

usually show him being shot with arrows C. As a young soldier, he cut his cloak in half with his sword to clothe a beggar D. From Spain, as he lay bedridden after a leg injury from battle, he decided he would serve Christ E. From France, fought in the Hundred Years’ War, the English tried and burned her at the stake F. Defender of the Church, chief opponent of Satan, and aid to souls at the hour of death *Fr. Capodanno has not been declared a saint yet, but his cause for canonization has been given to the Vatican in Rome. KEY: 1.F, 2.E, 3.A, 4.D, 5.B, 6.C Values Infusion Program: The Value for the Month of October is Friendship How do friendships help us to live the faith more truly? “No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends” (John 15:13).

Military Service N

ovember is a month that honors those in the military. We observe Veterans Day on November 11th to celebrate our veterans and thank them for their sacrifices and their service to our country; but who is a veteran? A veteran is someone who served in the military, either in the Army, Air Force, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, or the Navy, during times of war or peace. In 2016, there were 18.8 million veterans in the United States. Veterans Day was first called Armistice Day and it commemorated the end of World War I. Armistice was signed at 11:00 am on November 11, 1919 and Woodrow Wilson named it Armistice Day. It later became an official federal holiday in 1938, and President Dwight D. Eisenhower changed the name to Veterans Day in 1954. It is also a common practice around the world to observe two minutes of silence at 11:00 am every November 11th. Armistice Day is celebrated to this day in Canada, Great Britain, and France. One Veterans Day tradition is the Veterans Day National Ceremony, which is held in Arlington National Cemetery. The ceremony begins at 11:00 am when the president, or a designated representative, lays a wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier while a bugler plays “Taps.” The next portion of the ceremony is a parade of flags performed by a color guard made up of members from each of the Armed Forces.

By Laura Edwards

How do we define the branches of the Armed Forces? Army: The Army is comprised of a

group of soldiers who are trained and prepared to protect peace and security of the nation on land. It is the largest branch of the military, and it began as the Continental Army in 1775.

Air Force: The Air Force is in charge of military operations in the air. The Air Force was part of the Army until President Harry S. Truman made it an independent military service in 1947.

Navy: The Navy was established as a branch of the military in 1775 and it is made up of a fleet of waterborne military vessels. The Navy’s mission is to maintain, train, and equip sailors to maintain the freedom of the seas. Marine Corps: The Marine Corps was also established in

1775. In the military, marines are known as the first landing force and, as such, can be the first soldiers to enter combat. The official Marine Corps birthday is November 10th, known as United States Marine Corp Day.

Coast Guard: The Coast Guard is known best for enforcing

maritime laws, ocean rescues, and protecting life and property at sea. In times of war, the Coast Guard will aid the Navy.

Thanksgiving is About Letters? tude for all that they have done. This will bring so much joy into their lives and make it a true time of thanks. You can interview a friend or family member that is in the Military or is a Veteran. Ask them about their job and what they do or did. Let them tell you about their experiences, and where and when they have been deployed. Listen carefully and take good notes. Be sure to get their mailing address, and first and last name. Thank them for their time. Choose some brightly colored paper if you can, to write your letter. Address the letter and envelope to them. You can share a few things about yourself like your hobbies, friends, family, work, pets and travel. Then, use your notes to dedicate the rest of the letter to thanking them for all that they have done. Remind them that they are true heroes and that, without them, you wouldn’t have all of these wonderful things in your life to tell them. Draw a picture if you want to add a special touch! What if you don’t know someone in the US Military? Then, you can go to www.OperationGratitude.com, and just follow the directions. They send 200,000+ Care Packages to deployed troops and Veterans every year. Their goal is to include a letter in every one. Please share this with your friends, family, classmates and teachers. If we all help, then I’m sure that many heroes will be blessed this year and so “Thankful” for your letter. Make it a new part of your Thanksgiving tradition every year!

November is a month full of special days. Of course you might be thinking of Thanksgiving, which is on the 23rd! It’s a time with family and friends to celebrate our lives and show gratitude for all of our blessings. We think of turkey dinners, pumpkin pie and family traditions. Why not add some letter writing into the day? What can that have to do with being thankful? Let me explain. What you might not know is that in November we also celebrate; Election Day, World Freedom Day, US Marine Corps Day and Veterans Day! All of these days come before Thanksgiving and they surely represent many things to be grateful for this month. We need to take some time out of our busy lives to recognize the real heroes that serve or have served in our US Military. These brave heroes work to protect us, our rights, and our freedom. We have the right to an election and have freedom, thanks to them. Let’s make this a month of real, “Thanksgiving” by taking a few minutes to write a letter of grati-

id you know that the names of many places and people have meaning? Your school may be named after a famous person or someone that helped your community. Your street may be named after a famous person, like Washington or a tree like Maple. Just like these places were named with a purpose, so were you. You may have been named after a family member, like your dad or a great grandfather. Your name may represent the time you were born like Autumn or July. Your name may be an object, like Heather, which is a small plant with white or pink flowers. Your name could even have a meaning in a specific culture, like Dimitri, which is a Greek name meaning

6

“earth-lover” from the mythological Greek goddess Demeter (goddess of corn and harvest). It's fun to look for the meaning of names. Your name is a very important part of who you are. You may have been randomly named or named with a purpose, but everyone has an opportunity to GIVE purpose to their name!

As you go through life, your name will forever be a part of who you are. Others may not know how you got your name or what your name means. But when people think of you and say your name it will mean something to them. What will they think of when they say your name? The name Mahatma is an Indian name that was derived from Sanskrit meaning “great soul”. But when people say Mahatma Gandhi, to them, his name means even more like wise, humble, courageous, brave, hero, bold, kind, clever or born leader. Take the time to ind out why you have your name. Then embrace your name and love it because it is a part of who you are. And as you live life, give your name purpose so that when people say your name, they smile!

By Mary Lee, science teacher, St. Clare School

Oysters open up a new world for St. Clare students As hurricanes grow in intensity and the need for clean water intensifies on our planet, much attention is turning toward the ocean. Scientists are closely monitoring our waters, the shorelines, the atmosphere and even the organisms that dwell within in the hope of learning more about how the system works and devising solutions. These scientists come in all shapes, sizes and ages. In the ranks are students from St. Clare School who have participated in the Billion Oyster Project (BOP) for the last four years. The Great Kills school’s fifth generation of citizen scientists has already swarmed Richmond County Yacht Club (RCYC) twice this fall where its oyster cage is located. Science teacher Mary Lee and her robotics and environmental teams from Grades 6-8, with support from RCYC and BOP staff, had a blast while measuring the growth of their oysters as well as other marine organisms they found in their cage. They made atmospheric, land and water observations, and even performed chemical tests on the water. The data was then submitted to a collective database online for all BOP schools and climate and marine scientists to use. As a side project, the St. Clare robotics

team is on a mission to design a better non-fouling copper cage with bigger compartments for these studies. During their visits, the children have also been learning about how oysters used to be a big part of Staten Island’s history. Most were lost to overharvesting. Without these filter-feeders to clean the waters, they became polluted. Now that the reintroduction process has begun, the water seems to be responding and the oysters, at least in St. Clare’s cage, are flourishing. In fact, last spring some of the mature oysters from the cages at RCYC were taken to the Harbor School to breed. They are the first generation of oysters from NYC waters to be used in the BOP program. “It is amazing that the work the children are doing will ultimately have such a big real-world impact,” said Theresa Signorile, the principal of St. Clare School, who was thrilled that Lisa Kaplan, the Project Manager for the Governor’s Office of Storm Recovery, BOP staff and a NY1 television crew visited the school this month to connect with its student field scientists. With the fifth anniversary of Hurricane Sandy on the horizon, GOSR is working on implementing Scape Landscaping’s Rebuild by Design initiative where a set of breakwa-

Starting the year off right!

By: Dr. Susan B. Miller, Director of Math Instruction, Archdiocese of New York

Now I might refer to 3 ½ as 7/2. Can you find the seven halves in the picture above? What if I split each half in half again? Now it looks like this:

Now it has the name 14/4, or fourteen fourths! I can also break the mixed number up into different pieces. Let’s try this out… is 3 ½ the same as 2 + 1 ½ ?

{ {

As we head into November, we remember all those who served in our military. This had me thinking about the different names someone who served might have. My dad served in the army. If someone called his name, they might shout, “Private Miller,” but if it was a friend, they might instead call him by his first name, “Bob.” He has a lot of other names…my friends call him Mr. Miller, to his sister, he’s called Bobby…and as for me, I call him Dad! So this one person has several different names, but they all refer to the same person. My kids are the same way. One of my sons is typically called Daniel, but some friends call him Dan. When he’s in trouble, though, I call him Daniel Robert! Do you have several names too? I’ll bet you do! Did you know that fractions can have different names as well? For example, the number ¾ might be called three fourths one day, and three quarters the next. I can also call ¾ by its decimal name. Three fourths (or three quarters, as some might call it) is the same as 0.75, or 75 hundredths. Three fourths has another possible name - if you get ¾ of the problems right on the test, your teacher might call that 75%. Mixed numbers are like that too. The number 3 ½ can be called by lots of different names. Sometimes it helps to look at a picture to see all the different possible names! Let’s give it a try. Here’s a model of the number 3 1/2”:

2

But what if I split all the circles into halves. Does it have new names?

11/2

What other names does this mixed number have? Can you figure out the decimal names? What about the percent names? We all have lots of different names, and now you know that numbers do too. So, the next time you look at a number, try to find as many different names as you can!

Have you ever heard the saying, “practice makes progress?” When it comes to math and reading skills, this statement is always true. But how do you practice math and reading outside of school? A great website that makes math and reading practice fun is www.MrNussbaum.com. On this site you can find a wide variety of games for all grade levels. Not only are they fun, but you’ll learn something, too. This site is free and each month they post new games that are related to the season. If you look on the website in November, you can be sure to find games celebrating Thanksgiving. So the next time you want to play a game, try playing one that helps you build your reading and math skills on www.MrNussbaum.com.

The Secret Life Of A Military Kid: Destination Unknown By Terrica Joseph Jeremy is a military kid who receives shocking news. He’s moving! The new area is foreign to him and he’s sure he won’t fit in. He wonders, “What are the people like? Where will we live? Should I bother making friends?” Fearing it will be a disaster, he prepares for the worst but will he be prepared for the possibility of friendship? Only time will tell!

H is for Honor: A Military Family Alphabet By Devin Scillian Written by the son of a career officer, this book explores the branches of the Armed Services and speaks from the heart about the honor, privileges and sacrifices of military families everywhere. Readers will learn why drill sergeants have to be so tough, what it means to be patriotic, how much letters from home mean to soldiers, how often military families have to move and what life is like on base.

Veterans: Heroes in Our Neighborhood By Valerie Pfundstein This is a great rhyming picture book for readers of all ages that teaches mindfulness of and appreciation for the brave service men and women who may also be our family, friends, and neighbors.
