A Team of Survivors
or flight instincts, and those instincts come out during traumatic situations. In other words, fear is one of our natural instincts. If the team had been frantic and tried dangerous ways to climb their way out of the cave, they could have been injured or the water could have carried them further into the cave. If everyone had worked independently and acted out of fear, it may have negatively affected their chances of survival. By practicing mindfulness, as Chantawong had his team do, they were able to adapt their reactions so that they responded to the difficult and stressful situation in the best possible way.
June 23, 2018 began like most days, but it quickly became a day that caught the world’s attention. On this day, 12 soccer players aged 11 to 16 and their coach hiked into a cave system called Tham Luang Nang Non in Thailand. Tragically, the players and their coach became trapped 2.5 miles from the cave’s entrance due to heavy monsoon rains that started when they were inside the cave. Their belongings were found the next day, and the search-and-rescue began.
The boys tried to dig out of the cave, but they were not able to because of all the water and mud. Luckily, the team was found on July 2, 2018, nine days after they were trapped in the cave. During that time, two things helped the boys survive. Since they had no food or water, the team had to be resourceful. They were able to stay hydrated by licking the condensed water on the cave walls. Their coach, Ekapol Chantawong, who had trained in a Buddhist monastery, helped the boys stay calm by leading them through meditation. Ekapol Chantawong’s actions were life saving and selfless. Instead of focusing on their fear and doubting their survival, Chantawong’s team persevered, remained hopeful, and survived. By creating hope, Chantawong gave his team a sense of safety, security, and unity. Through his actions,
Rescue workers receive instructions at the Tham Luang Nang cave system in Thailand where 12 young soccer players and their coach became trapped, by rising monsoon waters in June 2018. he embodied the STOP survival plan (stay calm, think, observe, and plan). Although it is difficult to do, staying calm in a scary or difficult situation is the best possible thing to do. When we are calm, our minds can make clear and rational decisions because we are able to think. It is important to observe our surroundings too because there could be helpful resources nearby. The final step is to formulate a plan that will address the situation in a posi-

On July 2, 2018, a group of cave and rescue experts and members of the military from around the world found the boys. Rescue divers reached the boys first and brought food, medical supplies, and an air tube to make sure that they had enough oxygen. Sadly, one rescue diver lost his life while bringing oxygen tanks to the team, but his sacrifice helped save 13 lives. The rescue was completed in three days. After prolonged hospital stays, the boys were healthy and could return home. A memorial will be built to commemorate the heroic efforts of a Thai Navy Seal who passed away while helping rescue the boys and to celebrate the successful survival and rescue in Thailand.

Sled
led dogs are one of the most hardworking animals and it’s believed that they have worked with people for over 8,000 years! The term sled dog refers to many different dog breeds, including the Alaskan husky, Alaskan Malamute, Chinook, Canadian Eskimo husky, Greenland dog, Samoyed, and the Siberian husky. These and other breeds are great sled dogs because they are excellent distance runners, can work with a team, friendly toward people, and have a thick fur coat. A sled dog’s coat is important because they need to survive in temperatures -40° F and lower. Their coats consist of two layers: the
dogS
outer layer keeps the snow and moisture away from their body and works as a barrier against wind, and the inner layer functions as a layer of insulation to help keep their body heat. Sled dog teams have between 10 and 14 dogs in four different positions: lead dogs, swing dogs, team dogs, and wheel dogs. Wheel dogs help steer the sled, team dogs pull the team throughout the race, swing dogs help to move the team to the left or right, and
lead dogs set the pace of the team and make sure that the dogs are going in the same direction. Sled dogs were a method of transportation for the past 1,000 years. They were used for exploration and the transportation of furs, gold, supplies, firewood, food, and mail. Although the invention of the snowmobile made transportation quicker and easier, many mushers preserve the tradition of dog sledding by competing in two prominent Alaskan races.

FINDING NORTH:
Make a Homemade Compass
Long before we had GPS or Google Maps, people had to work hard in order to get from place to place. Explorers who wanted to venture around the world needed to rely on a multitude of things like reading the stars in the sky, observing moss on a tree or checking directions with a compass. For this month’s science experiment, you are going
Materials
1. An adult for help 2. 1 cork 3. 1 refrigerator magnet or stronger magnet if you have one
4. 1 metal sewing needle 5. 1 bowl 6. Water 7. Pliers
Procedure:
1. 2. 3.
4.
Fill up your bowl with water and place it on a table. Cut the paper into 4 pieces and label each piece of paper North, South, East and West. Save these for later. Now it’s time to make the compass. Carefully hold your needle at the “eye” with the point facing away from you. Swipe your needle across your magnet 30-50 times. Ask an adult to cut off ¼ inch of the cork from one of the ends. You will now have a small, circular cork disk.
Discussion Questions:
to make a magnetic compass, similar to the one in the picture. Before we make our compass, it is important to know that the Earth has two magnetic poles, the North Pole and the South Pole. These poles turn the Earth into a humongous magnet! A compass is a navigational tool that uses Earth’s magnetic field to help figure out which direction we are traveling.
5.
8. Scissors 9. Paper 10. Pencil
Have an adult use pliers to push your needle length wise through the center of the cork piece. Now, get your card labeled North. Make a prediction, where do you think the point of the needle will face? Place the North card on the table where you think the needle will point. Carefully place your cork and needle on to the surface of the water.
6.
What did the needle do when you placed it in the water? How well did your compass work? Compare your findings with a compass app you can download
6
7. 8.
Now observe. What does your needle do? Which way does the point face? The direction in which the needle points is magnetic North. Now that you know where North is, you can determine South, East and West. Place your cards around the bowl accordingly.
on your smartphone or tablet. How could you improve your compass for next time? How do you think a magnetic compass can help you navigate?

What Time Is It?
W
hat are time-order, or transitional words? They are all words that help us to know when something is happening, or has happened. Can you imagine reading how to build something or bake your favorite cookies without words like; first, next or last? What does it mean to write in chronological order? It means write in the order that the event happened. This is like rewinding a movie and playing it over again. Wouldn’t it be confusing to read about
a friend’s favorite day at recess, but the story started at the end of the day when they were done playing on the slide? Using time order words and writing chronologically in your Narrative and Explanatory writing is so important! When you are asked to write about an event or explain a process, then you need these words to make your writing easy to understand. Your stories also need to be written in the order that they occurred to make sense.

Surviving Social Circles
I
t is often said that, “Good character is how you act when no one is looking.” It is true that choosing to do the right thing because it feels right, and not because someone will say “good job” or because you could possibly get in trouble, is part of being a good citizen. But have you ever noticed that sometimes it is harder to do the right thing when people are watching, mostly your peers? When everyone around you decides to
make a bad choice, it can be very hard to be the only person making the right choice. However, you should never follow other people just because you are worried about what they will think of you. Making the wrong choices can have life changing effects that are much more serious than getting a few friends angry with you for the moment. Even if you do make the right choices, but you are hanging around with people that are making the wrong choices you
may get blamed for things you did not even do. Others may think you are guilty of the same bad choices just by association. One of the most important things you can do to make the right choices is to be sure to surround yourself with the right friends who support you. Finding good friends can be hard work but a good friend will help you survive social circles and always be on your side. Choosing a good friend means finding someone with good qualities like trust and respect. Your friend
should be positive and always seek out the good things in you and in life. Stay away from others that put you down rather than build you up. Finally, make sure there is a good balance of give and take. When you find a good friend, be sure to be a good friend, too. In short, if your friends do not except you for who you are, they are not good friends. A true friend will always want you to be happy and will respect your decisions. Friends help friends in tough times. A true friend will always bring out the best in you.
The CaT – The supreme hunter A final note: Back in September, we discovered how puzzle toys like the Kong® can give dogs jobs to do to earn their food. Cats can benefit from the same kinds of mental stimulation offered by puzzle toys such as the PetSafe SlimCat ball and Fishbowl Feeder and the Kitty Kong® Wobbler. This can be particularly good for young, active, playful cats as well as for overweight cats who would benefit from working more and eating slower. (For more tips on enriching your kitty’s life, go to http://www.mywoofgang.com/purr_view.php.)
By Laura Garber
C
ats are supreme hunters. They are happiest when their lives and their environments support their natural behaviors – high perches for “spying” on their territory, hidden routes of movement for stalking their prey, and toys and games that allow for hunt-like play. Giving them opportunities for solo play (toys that move on their own, window access to watch animals outside, even kitty TV) as well as interactive play with their human(s) can accomplish this! In the wild, cats would hunt for small prey six or more times a day, each hunt being a burst of energy. So arranging a cat’s day around multiple short bursts of activity and interactive play, followed by feeding after their successful “hunt”, will offer the most satisfying lifestyle. People sometimes complain that their young cats become excited with play and have difficulty calming down afterward, but this is usually the result of inappropriate play which leaves them in an excited state.
10
Start your play session just as the hunt would happen in nature: The prey would be its most energetic, flying or darting away from its pursuer. As “the hunt” continues, you can imagine that the prey would begin to tire, resting for moments between short jerky attempts at escape. Finally, the exhausted prey would give in to the crafty predator, so let your cat catch the toy. And now would be a good time to let your kitty celebrate her successful hunt by putting out some tasty tidbits! Using toys that simulate the hunt, like Da Bird, Cat Dancer, and Cat Catcher, are great choices for interactive play and will make for a happy cat!

• Cheddar cheese • Triscuit Thin Crisps • Chicken in a Biskit crackers • Wavy stick crackers from a bag of Chex Mix • Whipped cream cheese
Directions
1. Slice cheese into thick wedges, and make slightly smaller triangles than your Triscuit Thin Crisps. 2. Pipe cream cheese - put cream cheese in a bag and cut a small hole in the corner. Pipe tiny dollops of cream cheese on the Triscuit Thin Crisps, the Chicken in a Biskit crackers and the wavy stick Chex Mix crackers. (You will need to combine two wavy stick Chex Mix crackers to create the top “crust” on each “slice of pie.”) Add a dollop of cream cheese on top of each cheese wedge for the “whipped cream.” 3. Assemble and display like pieces of pie on a plate, or put together to look like a pie.
