MAY 2018

A message from the Regional Superintendent Dear Parents and Students:

April showers (and sometimes April snow showers) bring May flowers, so the saying goes. As we begin the month of May, as Catholics, we celebrate Mary, the mother of our Lord. It is fitting that the month of May is known as the Month of Mary, and is a month filled with May crowning processions, with beautiful flowers given as gifts to our Blessed Mother. We also celebrate our own mothers on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 13, 2018. Throughout the month we encourage our children to pray to Mary for her guidance and blessings. Let’s all join in prayer and peace and pray to Mary to watch over our mothers, sisters, aunts and grandmothers. On May 10th, we solemnly honor Ascension Day, which is a holy day of obligation. As Catholics we know that Ascension Day is one of the earliest Christian festivals dating back to the year 68! According to the New Testament, Jesus

met several times with his disciples during the 40 days after his resurrection to instruct them on how to carry out his teachings. It is believed that on the 40th day, he took them to the Mount of Olives, where he ascended to heaven. May is a busy month of celebrations in our schools. We are celebrating our second grade classes receiving their first Holy Communion and our older children receiving the Holy Spirit through Confirmation. On Tuesday, May 1st, we will gather together at Monsignor Farrell H.S., to honor the winners of the “Wonders of Alaska-Poetry in Art” art show featuring, the Honorable Catherine

DiDomenico DeMarco who will read her poems to the attendees. Thursday, May 17th is our Social Studies Exposition at St. Adalbert, and on May 23rd we unite all our Catholic School 8th graders in prayer at the annual Mass for 8th Grade students to be held at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church. Finally, please take a moment to pause to remember those who have died serving in the United States Military on Memorial Day, Monday, May 28th. The men and women who serve our country and sacrifice so much for our country’s freedoms deserve our respect and prayers. What an exciting month of beginnings, remembrance, and celebrations! Enjoy the month of May and warmer weather to come!

Catholic Identity / Values Infusion By: Paige Sanchez, Associate Superintendent for Mission Effectiveness, Archdiocese of New York

Our Blessed Mother Mary: Even the Weather Blesses the Lord! The Catholic Church dedicates the month of May to Jesus’ Mother, Mary. It is a month of spring in which flowers all around us speak of joy, beauty, and happiness. And just as flowers bloom, so too do our lives bloom, because of our friendship with Mary and her son, Jesus. Often in the month of May, a statue of Mary is crowned with a wreath of flowers, as a way for us to celebrate her. There is a beautiful prayer called the Canticle of Daniel that praises God’s presence in all of creation. It cries out to all of nature, including many weather phenomena, to bless the Lord: “All you clouds of the sky, breezes and winds, O bless the Lord! Showers and dew, frost and snow, fire and heat, O bless the Lord!”

Mary also teaches us that weather helps us to be in a relationship with God. There is a legend that says a childless aristocratic couple asked the Blessed Virgin to show them a worthy cause to donate their fortune to. This couple and the pope both had the same dream that on the morning of August 5, in the year 352, Mary would send a sign of snow falling in the shape of a church on the Esquiline Hill in Rome, in the middle of the hot summer, marking the place where a church should be built in her honor. Today you can still visit the glorious Basilica of St. Mary Major that was built in the place marked by the miracle of snow, reminding us of the gift of Mary, Our Lady of Snows.

Values Infusion Program: The Value for the Month of May is Work How has work helped you to experience a true and holy rest? “God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work he had done in creation” (Genesis 2:3).

WEATHER

by Laura Edwards

on other Planets

People around the world use the weather forecast to learn if it will be a warm, cold, sunny, cloudy, stormy, snowy, or rainy day. With this information, we can decide if we need to wear coats, boots, long or short sleeved shirts, pants or shorts, hats and gloves, and even if we need to bring an umbrella! But have you ever wondered what the weather is like on other planets? The atmosphere determines the weather on each planet, so it is logical that the weather would change drastically from one planet to the next. Earth’s atmosphere has four layers and they are known as the Troposphere, Stratosphere, Mesosphere, and the Thermosphere. Mercury, on the other hand, only has one layer to its atmosphere, which is known as the exosphere.

The word exosphere means that it’s the outermost layer of a planet’s atmosphere. Therefore, Mercury has an exosphere because its atmosphere is so thin that it is made up by the outermost layer. Due to the very thin atmosphere on Mercury, there are no storms, clouds, wind, or rain. Although Mercury is the closest planet to the sun and the sun would look two times as large from Mercury as it does from Earth, there is not enough atmosphere to spread light across the planet. As a result, Mercury’s sky would look black. The temperatures on Mercury can reach anywhere between 750 and 800°F during the day, and the temperatures can drop to -330°F at night. Venus, the second planet closest to the sun, is often called Earth’s “sister planet” because astronomers think Venus was more like Earth in the past. Despite being similar in size, Venus and Earth have very different weather. For example, there are no seasons on Venus. The seasons on Earth are caused by the strength of sunlight in each hemisphere during the year, which is caused by the 23-degree tilt of its rotation axis. The tilt of Venus’ rotation axis is 3-degrees. Since the planet has little movement, its seasons do not change. It does not rain or snow on Venus either since there is no more water. Unlike Mercury, Venus does have multiple layers in its atmosphere which keep the surface of the

4

planet around 800°F. Mars, the fourth planet from the sun, experiences very severe weather. The average temperature on Mars is around -80°F but it can reach a low of -195°F during the winter and a high of 70°F near the equator. The atmosphere on Mars is thick enough to have clouds, weather, and wind. Dust storms on Mars are common during the spring and summer, and the dust storms are the largest in the solar system. The storms can become so large that they take over the planet’s surface! Additionally, it’s believed that there was much more water on Mars in the past than there is now. Most of the water remaining on Mars can be found in the polar ice caps. Jupiter, the fifth planet from the sun, is known for the great red spot. The great red spot is a constant storm that is four times larger than Earth! Many scientists think that the great red spot is a hurricane. The wind on Jupiter is caused by the planet’s internal heat. The wind can exceed 400 miles per hour and can

KidzBUZZNJ.com

cause lighting! Saturn, the sixth planet from the sun, is most recognized for its rings. The recorded speeds on Saturn have been higher than 1,000 miles per hour. Saturn’s lightning bolts are 10,000 times stronger than lightning on Earth! Uranus, the seventh planet from the sun, is said to be the largest of the ice giants. Since Uranus is tilted on its side, each season lasts for 21 years! As a result, the seasons on Uranus are severe. The temperature on Uranus, like the temperature on Venus, changes drastically from one layer of the atmosphere to the next. Neptune, the eighth planet from the sun, also called an ice giant, is known to have the most extreme weather of any planet. The seasons on Neptune last more than 40 years! Additionally, Neptune is more than 30 times further away from the sun than the Earth. The wind on Neptune is three times stronger than the wind on Jupiter and nine times stronger than the wind on Earth!

Remembering on Memorial Day – and every day

M

emorial Day is an American holiday, observed on the last Monday of May, honoring the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Memorial Day 2018 occurs on Monday, May 28. It originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades. Unofficially, it marks the beginning of the summer season. But what can each of us do to keep the true meaning and spirit of Memorial Day alive? Here are a few suggestions:

3. Purchase a poppy from a VFW member

They usually sell them for a donation in front of shopping centers. Buy one as a reminder to all of us that this isn’t just a day for shopping, but it’s also a day of respect. 4. Blast the music and be colorful

Take part in the National Moment of Remembrance at 3 pm. Wherever you are, stop, and give a minute of your time. 2. Be a part of your community

Before firing up the barbeque, attend one of those parades or commemorative services. Most cities will hold concerts. If there is not one nearby, you will be 1. Take a moment to remember able to catch the televised National Memorial Day Did You Know...each year on Memorial Day a national Concert. moment of remembrance takes place at 3:00 p.m. local time?

Make a patriotic music playlist and hang the red, white, and blue. This is the day to fly our nation’s flag and other decorations. 5. Keep your family’s personal military history alive

Over the picnic table, share stories of family members who served this country. Wearing the uniform calls for sacrifice but it is also an amazing adventure and one that deserves to be documented. If you have someone willing to reminisce, take a video or jot down notes. Don’t let your family’s story disappear without it being recorded.

Rhinoceros

Did you know that the word rhinoceros means nose-horned? The first word, “rhino,” translates to nose and the second word, “ceros,” translates to horn. The rhinoceros has lived on Earth for more than 50 million years. The closest relatives to rhinos today are tapirs, horses, and zebras. There are five species of rhinoceros: Black, Indian (one-horned rhinoceros), Javan, Sumatran, and White. Rhinos live in forests, savannas, and tropical regions throughout Africa, India, Indonesia, Nepal, and Vietnam. Rhinos, including the White rhino, are shades of gray or brown in color and their

MAY 2018

hooves have three short toes with broad nails. Except for their tail and ears, rhinos are either hairless or have a small amount of hair, and their skin is very thick. Rhinos range between 6-12 feet in length and between 4- 6.5 feet in height. Since rhinos are the second largest animal on land, it’s not surprising that they are heavy. Rhinos weigh between 1,300 and 7,000 pounds! Rhinos are herbivores, which means that they only eat plants. While the White rhinoceros eats grass, the Black, Indian, Sumatran, and Javan eats leaves from trees and bushes. Rhinos do not have a good sense of sight, but they do have excellent senses of smell and sound. They rotate their ears to hear sounds around them too! Rhinos like

to spend very hot days asleep in the shade and they use muddy pools to cool off. The mud dries on their skin and creates a layer which protects them from the sun and insects. Although rhinos usually live alone, and are territorial, species like the White rhino often live together. A group of rhinos is called a “herd” or a “crash.” In the wild, rhinos can live for approximately 35 years. Rhinos communicate with one another through sounds such as growls, snorts, and squeals. They are also able to communicate through infrasonic frequencies, which is a frequency that is too low for humans to hear. The sound of a Sumatran rhino’s whistle can travel 12 miles.

KidzBUZZNJ.com

What else makes the rhinoceros so interesting? • Rhinoceros horns are made of keratin, which also makes up our hair and fingernails! • Rhinos use their teeth for defense. • Rhinos can run as fast as 30 or 40 miles per hour! • The Sumatran rhinoceros is the closest living relative to the ancient woolly rhino! • Black rhinoceros have a beak shaped lip. • Despite their size, rhinos scare easily, and their instinct is to charge at whatever frightened them.

A Universal Celebration!

Mother’s Day is a holiday that is celebrated around the world. It became an official U.S. holiday in 1914, when President Woodrow Wilson declared it to be celebrated on the second Sunday of May. There are more than 60 countries that also share the same date as the U.S. The UK celebrates it and calls it Mothering Sunday, which is on the 4th Sunday of Lent. Many other countries call it Parent’s Day, Women’s Day or Ladies Day and celebrate it in different months throughout the year. Celebrations for mothers can be traced all the way back to the ancient Greeks and Romans. They had spring festivals to celebrate their mother goddesses.

This is a holiday that everyone has in common, people everywhere, and all through history, love to show appreciation for their mothers. There are fun facts about this holiday to share. Almost 96% of all Americans participate in Mother’s Day in some way. It is one of the busiest days of the year for phone companies and restaurants. Mother’s Day is the second biggest gift-giving holiday in America. Americans spend more than 14 million dollars a year on this day! There are over 83 million mothers living in the U.S. today and 2 billion worldwide. The President of The United States always gives a proclamation on this day as

well. Wow, this is a wonderful day to have on our calendar! Take time this Mother’s Day to show your appreciation for your Mother, Grandmother, Aunt, Stepmother or special woman in your life! It would be great to make them a gift or meal, buy them flowers or take them out somewhere. One of the best gifts you can give them is a poem or letter. Writing a poem or letter costs nothing but your time and thoughts, and they will surely cherish this! Choose a Limerick, Diamante, Acrostic, Haiku or Free Verse Poem to write. Give it to your special person and enjoy!

id you know that every person has an imaginary bubble that follows them around throughout the day? It is called personal space. Personal space is the space around your body that is reserved, or saved, just for you. When someone enters into your personal space circle, you may feel scared or annoyed. Let’s say you are working at your desk and the person at the desk next to you starts to put his papers on your desk. How would you feel? What if you had a

pencil in your hand and someone just took it and started using it without even asking? Have you ever been in line and someone bumped you from behind? These are all examples of someone invading your imaginary bubble or moving into your personal space. How do these personal bubbles happen if you cannot even see them? According to science, our individual sense of personal space begins to develop around the age of three or four years old. Researchers believe that personal space is created

6

and activated by the amygdala (a-migda-lah), the part of the brain that alerts fear. When the amygdala is activated, it can make you feel scared. The amygdala develops differently for some people so there may be people that do not understand personal space as well. Many conflicts, arguments, or fights can be avoided if everyone would remember to stay out of each other's personal space. Let’s spread more kindness by keeping a safe distance, not touching things that do not belong to us, and showing control of

our body and the things that do belong to us. If you do get in someone else’s personal space by accident, apologize. If someone gets in your personal space, remind them that it makes you feel uncomfortable. Actions speak louder than words, but if your actions make a mistake, use your words to help fix it.

MAY IS NATIONAL SMILE MONTH

Enjoy this fun poem that will remind you about the power of a smile.

SMILING

Smiling is infectious; you catch it like the flu. When someone smiled at me today, I started smiling too. I passed around a corner and someone saw my grin. When he smiled, I realized I had passed it on to him. I thought about that smile and then I realized its worth. A single smile, just like mine, could travel around the earth. So if you feel a smile begin, don’t leave it undetected. Let’s start an epidemic quick and get the world infected. Author Unknown

JUPITER Answer: 21,516°F

Solution: 43500 ÷ 2 = 21,750. Starting at -234, you must subtract 234 from 21,750 so 21,750 − 234 = 21,516°F.

WOW, THAT’S BIG! Answer: 11 Earths

Solution: Diameter is 2 × radius. Jupiter's diameter is 5.6 × 2 = 11.2 Earth diameters. So, while there might be a little room left, only 11 Earths will fit across Jupiter's diameter.

Solar Power: Create a Solar Updraft Tower For this month’s science experiment, we will explore solar energy. Solar energy is power obtained by harnessing the sun’s rays. Solar energy helps to reduce the amount of pollution and chemicals being released into our earth’s atmosphere. You might see people using solar energy right now. Look around your neighborhood for houses or buildings with solar panels. These individuals are using the sun to help power their homes and in turn are becoming more earth-friendly citizens! Follow the steps below to create a Solar Updraft Tower. You will have fun observing just how powerful and useful our sun is for planet earth!

Materials:

1. 3 tin cans, cleaned with all of the tops and the bottoms removed

2. Tape 3. Paper clips 4. Thumb tacks or push-pins

6. Ask an adult to help balance the center of

Procedure: 1. Stack the 3 cans on top of one another. Tape

the cans together so they are connected. 2. Unbend the paperclip and shape it into an arch for the top of the tower. The arch should be big enough that it connects one side of the top can to the other side of the top can. It should look like the handle of a basket. 3. Tape the arch to the opening of the top can. 4. Ask an adult to tape a thumbtack or pushpin to the middle of the arch with the point facing up. 5. Create a paper pinwheel. Feel free to number, letter or color your pinwheel blades to help you see the blades move later during the experiment.

5. 2 books or 2 wooden blocks 6. 1 paper pinwheel 7. A sunny spot

the pinwheel on the thumbtack. The side of the pinwheel with the tape in the center should face down on the tack. 7. Find a sunny spot in your house. 8. Place 2 books or two blocks side by side with about two inches of distance between them. 9. Place the solar tower on top of the books. Be sure that there is room between the books for air to enter in from the bottom of the tower. 10. The heat from the sun will warm the air in the can. This will cause an updraft (a small current or rising of air, typically warm air), which will spin the pinwheel.

Discussion Questions:

What happens to your solar tower at night or on a cloudy day? Move the solar tower to a shady spot- do you observe the same results? Remove the cans from the books - what changes do you notice? Experiment with different materials for the tower - do you think other materials would work the same way?
