Brookhaven Firefighters Make Quick Knockdown Shirley, NY- On Saturday, February 17th around 7:45 P.M., the Brookhaven Fire Department was activated for a report of a house fire next to 438 Auborn Ave. On arrival, Chief Giuseppe Loiacono radioed in that he had flames showing through JUMP TO FILE# the exterior wall. 022018114 Loiacono reactivated for a working fire. Engine 5-3-5 arrived a short time later and the crew went to work immediately. Crews were able to make a fast knock down on the fire. Firefighters laddered up the side of the home and removed some siding to make sure that there was no further extension. All occupants were able to escape without injury. Mutual Aid was provided by Yaphank for an engine crew and Mastic for a Rapid Intervention Team. Center Moriches was called to stand by in case another alarm came into Brookhaven. South Country Ambulance, who was standing by for Shirley Community Ambulance that night, was on scene to provide EMS support. - JOHN WALTHERS

Car Crashes into Shirley Storefront Shirley, NY - On the afternoon of March 1st, Mastic EMS and Mastic FD were toned out for a car versus building. Mastic FD and EMS personnel arrived on the scene to find a car that had jumped the curb and crashed into a storefront, breaking the door and glass. Firefighters checked the car and moved it back away from the store.

Two-Car Crash in Holtsville Injures One Holtsville, NY - On January 31st, a two-car collision on North Service Road and Morris Avenue sent both cars through the woods, one ending up on the Expressway, the other hitting several trees and bushes, injuring the driver. Holtsville firefighters secured both cars and transported the injured driver to University Hospital.

Black Ice Causes Head-On Collision in Centereach Centereach, NY - Early morning freeze caused multiple accidents due to black ice on January 27th, including a head-on collision on Holbrook Avenue in Centereach. Two people were injured and transported to University Hospital.
Dirt Bike Wrecks in Mastic Beach Mastic Beach, NY - On Saturday, March 3rd, the Mastic Beach Fire Department was activated for a report of a motor vehicle accident involving a motorcycle on Commack Road, off Flower Road. Mastic Beach F.D., under the command of Assistant Chief Tom Montreuil, arrived on scene to find that a dirt bike had hit an SUV. Firefighters made sure there were no fluids on the ground while EMTs from Mastic Beach EMS checked the rider out. The rider of the bike was taken by ambulance to a local hospital with minor injuries. All fire department apparatus and ambulance units, with the exception of the transporting unit, went back into service a short time later. Suffolk Police were investigating the cause of the accident.

Mastic Beach Summer Home Burns in Overnight Fire Mastic Beach, NY- On March 1st at 1:45 A.M., the Mastic Beach Fire Department was alerted to a report of a structure fire in the vicinity of Overlook Drive and Neighborhood Road. On arrival, fire officials found the rear of the home well in- JUMP TO FILE# volved. Chief Tom 030218105 Montreuil [Chief 31] requested a reactivation and Mutual Aid to respond. Firefighters were able to make a quick knock down of the fire. The home was reported to be not occupied at the time of the incident and no injuries were reported. Assistance was provided by Mastic Fire Department and Mastic Beach Ambulance. Brookhaven Fire Department was also originally requested, but they were not needed. The cause of the fire is under investigation. - JOHN WALTHERS

Mastic Beach, NY - On Friday, February 9th at about 1:30 P.M., Mastic Beach Fire Department was activated for a Motor Vehicle Accident on Commack Road, near Dianna Drive. Assistant Chief Fred Loiacono [5-1332] was first to arrive and advised that he had an MVA involving one car that crashed into a pole and took wires down. Chief Loiacono requested the first-due unit to come in and se-
JUMP TO FILE #021018105 cure the scene. Firefighters made sure the car was safe and began to tape off the area to make sure no unauthorized persons entered the scene. Mastic Beach ambulance was also called into the scene and transported one person to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Additional FD units, including fire police, were brought in to secure some of the surrounding blocks and assist SCPD with traffic control. PSEG arrived a short time later and began to assess what repairs needed to be made, taking over the scene. The road remained closed for several hours while repairs were done. - JOHN WALTHERS

Two-Car Crash in Farmingville Turns Firefighters into Pit Crew Farmingville, NY - On February 8th, firefighters from the Farmingville Fire Department responded to a two-car crash on Portion Road and Blue Point Road, and turned into a pit crew! After patients were transported from the scene, firefighters used GoJaks to lift the car and pushed it across the road to a safe area.

Car Collides with Parked Car in Mastic on Snowy Night
Mastic, NY - On Monday, March 5th at about 12:27 A.M., the Mastic Fire Department was called for a Motor Vehicle Crash on Patchogue Ave., near Roberts Street. On arrival, firefighters found a vehicle that had smashed into a parked car. Firefighters went to work ensuring that both vehicles were secure and placing speedy dry down for a fluid spill. The driver of the Nissan Sentra was the sole occupant of the vehicle. He was taken to Brookhaven Hospital by members of Mastic Ambulance where he was treated for his injuries. Suffolk Police were investigating whether slick road conditions from the late-night snowfall were the cause, or if other factors contributed to the accident. The road was closed for about one hour due to the vehicle blocking the roadway.

Two-Car MVA with Overturn in Mastic Mastic, NY - Around 5:00 P.M. on February 27th, two vehicles crashed, causing one vehicle to overturn. The accident occurred on Mastic Rd. and Mastic Blvd., right in front of the Mastic FD station. Mastic EMS and Mastic FD personnel arrived on the scene within seconds. Firefighters went right to work on freeing one person who was still in the overturned vehicle. Mastic EMS transported two people to a local hospital. Firefighters then checked the other vehicle and put speedy dry down on leaked fluids on the roadway.

Fire Severely Damages Home in Islip Terrace Islip Terrace, NY - The Islip Terrace Fire Department received a call for a reported house fire in the vicinity of Richard JUMP TO FILE# Avenue and Park 022618108 Place just before 6:30 P.M. on Saturday, February 24th. Upon arrival, fire crews discovered heavy fire in a two-story structure at 22 Richard Avenue. A working fire was transmitted, bringing in mutual aid from nearby departments. The fire took about 30 minutes to bring under control and there were no reported injuries. The family was not home at the time of the fire. The cause is under investigation. - EVAN ROLLA
