Fully-Involved Car Fire in Brookhaven Brookhaven, NY - Just before 8:00 A.M. on January 20th, Brookhaven firefighters were activated for a Signal-14 reported car fire located westbound on Sunrise Highway, by Horseblock Road in Brookhaven. Firefighters responded through the heavy morning rush hour traffic and upon arrival, found a fullyinvolved car fire. Crews stretched a one-and-three-quarter inch hand-line and quickly knocked down the fire.

Early Morning Fire Guts Popular Restaurant in Mastic Mastic, NY - On Sunday, February 5th around 5:00 A.M., the Suffolk County Police and Mastic Fire Department were activated for an automatic fire alarm at the Manor House Restaurant at 1443 Montauk Highway, off of Lambert Avenue. Suffolk County Police 7thPrecinct officers and Mastic Fire Chief Rudy Sunderman Jr. arrived to find flames fully engulfing the building. Chief Sunderman immediately had county dispatch activate his department's Mutual Aid plan for assistance from neighboring departments. Responding engines quickly began tapping hydrants and stretching hand-lines across Montauk Highway so that they could go
JUMP TO FILE #020617120 to work battling the flames. Mastic FD also set up their tower ladder in the parking lot. An additional truck was ordered from Brookhaven so that they could set up on the opposite side of the building. Due to the intensity of the fire and safety concerns on arrival, firefighters maintained an exterior attack. Chief Sunderman gave the under-control transmission at 7:11 A.M. The fire required extensive overhaul to be done. According to officials, two firefighters received minor injuries during the fire, with one requiring transport to a local
hospital. Mutual Aid on the fire side was provided by Bellport, Brookhaven, Center Moriches, East Moriches, Eastport, Manorville, Mastic Beach, Ridge and Yaphank. Mastic, Shirley and South Country Ambulance Companies provided EMS Rehab and support on the scene. According to fire officials, the building ended up having to be demolished due to the extent of the fire. All fire and EMS units were released from the scene before 1:00 P.M. The scene was then turned over to the Suffolk County Police Arson Squad and the Brookhaven Fire Marshal's office to investigate. - JOHN WALTHERS

Extrication Needed at Smithtown MVA Smithtown, NY - At approximately 2:45 P.M. on February 4th, the Kings Park Fire Department responded to 3 Frank Street in Smithtown for a motor vehicle accident. Firefighters arrived to find a two-car collision with one person trapped inside the vehicle. Driver Has Seizure and Overturns Car in Commack Commack, NY - At approximately 7:48 P.M. on Saturday, February 11th, the Commack Fire Department and Commack VAC responded to an overturned vehicle in front of 159 Parkway Drive North in Commack. Upon arrival, units discovered a single overturned vehicle that had flipped over after the driver suffered a seizure. While firefighters secured the vehicle, EMS evaluated and packaged the patient for transport to Southside Hospital for further treatment.

ELMONT FD
First arriving Elmont FD units were met with heavy fire and smoke.
Early Morning Fatal House Fire in Elmont Elmont, NY - On February 4th at approximately 12:15 A.M., Nassau County FireCom alerted the Elmont FD to respond to multiple calls of a house fire on Dutch Broadway and Russell Avenue. Arriving units found the two-story dwelling fullyinvolved in fire. A 31-year-old male resident advised that his 70-year-old father was trapped on the secondfloor and that he was unable to reach him. Chief Edward Dailey and firefighters from Engine-3 immediately initiated a rescue attempt. The victim was removed in an unresponsive state and transported to a local hospital by a Nassau County Police ambulance. The victim was
JUMP TO FILE #021217110 pronounced dead at the hospital. Chief Dailey received minor burns and was treated at a local hospital. The fire was located on the first and second floors, as well as in the basement. With the assistance of units from Lakeview, Valley Stream and Franklin Square/Munson Fire Departments, the fire was brought under control without any further incident. The Nassau County Police and Fire Marshals are investigating the fire. - DAVID RAGUSA

Dry Weather Brings Afternoon Brush Fire in Brookhaven
Brookhaven, NY - On February 6th just after 2:00 P.M., firefighters from Brookhaven responded to the report of a brush fire on Woodside Ave., just east of Station Rd. This was the second time responding in several hours. Upon arrival, firefighters were met with a 50'x150' ring of fire, located about 20-feet into the wooded area. Brookhaven firefighters used booster lines and a GI (5-ton) and quickly extinguished the fire.

Elmont Firefighter Honored by New York State Legislators Elmont, NY - On Sunday, February 12th, Elmont Fire Department Lt. Jeffrey Dupoux of Truck Co. 2 was honored during an award presentation for a rescue he made on the Long Island Expressway in Suffolk County. While in his personal vehicle on February 1st, Lt. Dupoux observed a JUMP TO FILE# collision between an 021217109 SUV and a National Grid truck that caused the SUV to overturn. Lt. Dupoux, along with off-duty Suffolk County Police Officer Thomas Mutarelli, stopped to lend their assistance. Both men quickly realized that the female operator of the SUV was trapped in the vehicle and that a fire had started in the engine compartment. Lt. Dupoux and Officer Mutarelli worked together to free the woman from the vehicle and just moments after they pulled her to safety, the vehicle became fully-involved in fire. State Senator Todd Kaminsky awarded Lt. Dupoux the State Senate Liberty Medal, while Assemblywoman Michaelle Solages presented an Assembly Proclamation, recognizing the act of bravery. - DAVID RAGUSA

Garage Fire in Smithtown Quickly Knocked Smithtown, NY - At approximately 9:43 A.M. on Friday, February 17th, the Smithtown Fire Department received a call for a reported structure fire in the vicinity of 27 Fifty Acre Road. Additional 911 calls were reporting a garage fire at 25 Fifty Acre Road. Shortly after activation, Fire Chiefs arrived to find heavy fire in a 20x30 detached garage and requested a Working Fire to be transmitted. Firefighters placed hand-lines into operation to extinguish the fire, which took about 30 minutes. Mutual Aid was provided by the Nesconset and Kings Park Fire Departments. There were no reported injuries and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Driver of SUV Killed After Colliding with Tractor-Trailer in Moriches
Moriches, NY – On the morning of February 23rd at approximately 2:35 A.M., the Mastic Fire Department received an activation from County to respond to a car versus tree with heavy rescue at Montauk Highway, near Fanning Landing Road. Chief Rudy Sunderman Jr. was the first to arrive on scene and radioed back to headquarters that units were in fact responding in to a vehicle versus tractor-trailer, not a vehicle versus tree. He also advised that there was heavy pin. Engine-3 and the rescue truck quickly responded to the scene and assessed the situation. Units were in the process of attempting extrication when it was determined that the driver of the SUV was in fact DOA. Officials from Mastic Ambulance and Mastic FD then turned the scene over to the Suffolk County Police, who would conduct an accident investigation.

Car Goes Up Utility Pole in Mastic Beach

Mastic Beach, NY - Just before 10:00 A.M. on February 14th, Suffolk County Emergency Service dispatchers received a call for a car accident on Mastic Road, near Commack Road in Mastic Beach. Suffolk County 7th-Precinct Police and ESU officers were dispatched to the location, as well as units from the Mastic Beach Fire Department and Mastic Beach Ambulance Company. Mastic Beach FD Captain Jeff McGown came up on the air as the officer in charge and advised dispatch that he was responding to the location. County began to relay back
JUMP TO FILE #021517113 additional details that the vehicle was reported to have hit a pole, but that the wires were not down. On arrival, Captain McGown and his crew found a vehicle suspended in the air from a guide wire belonging to the utility pole. Firefighters and ambulance personnel immediately went to work making sure that the scene was safe, while also evaluating the occupants. Further investigation of the scene
determined that the fire hydrant near the pole had also been struck and knocked over. To get the car down, firefighters had to put chocks under the vehicle, which allowed the tow operator, with help from ESU officers, to ease the vehicle down to the ground again. During this task, police closed a stretch of road surrounding the scene for safety reasons and Fire Police from the Mastic Beach FD diverted traffic down Commack Road, away from the scene. - JOHN WALTHERS

MVA in Selden Sends Car Crashing into Tree Selden, NY - Just before 1:00 P.M. on Saturday, February 11th, two cars collided at the intersection of Pine Street and North Evergreen after one car blew a stop sign. The impact sent one car crashing into a tree, trapping one subject in the vehicle. Selden firefighters, under the direction of Chief of Department B. Xikis, used multiple tools and freed the subject in under 20 minutes. A total of four people were transported to University Hospital in Stony Brook, one in serious condition. MVA with Entrapment in Smithtown Smithtown, NY - At 3:56 P.M. on February 16th, the Smithtown Fire Department was dispatched to a motor vehicle accident in front of the Smithtown Animal Hospital at 891 W Jericho Turnpike in Smithtown. First arriving units discovered a two-car accident with three people injured and one still trapped in the vehicle. Firefighters from R-9 and E-5 used hydraulic equipment to free the trapped passenger, as her legs were trapped underneath the dashboard. Crews quickly extricated the occupant and prepared her for transport via Smithtown EMS to a nearby hospital. The roadway was shut down throughout the duration of the alarm.

Crews Battle House Fire in Central Islip

Islandia, NY - During the morning hours of Sunday, February 19th, the Central Islip Fire Department was dispatched to the report of a house fire at 98 Halfmile Road in Islandia. Third Assistant Chief arrived with smoke showing from a vacant, single-story house and requested the alarm to be reactivated as a Working Fire, bringing in Mutual Aid from the Hauppauge and Islip Terrace Fire Departments. Within 30 minutes, the main body of fire was knocked down. One person was checked out for burns. The fire is under investigation by the Town of Islip Fire Marshal's Office.

Two Heavy Rescues within Hours of Each Other for Mt. Sinai Firefighters
Mt. Sinai, NY - On February 23rd, just four hours after responding to a reported vehicle overturn, Mt. Sinai firefighters went back to work, removing a female who was trapped in her car after three vehicles collided on County Road 83 and Canal Road in Mt. Sinai. Firefighters were able to remove the door on the driver's side using hydraulic spreaders and cutters. After she was freed from the vehicle, the patient was handed off to personnel from Port Jefferson Ambulance Company for transport to a nearby hospital.

Fully-Involved Car Fire Shuts Down L.I. Expressway Holtsville, NY - On February 10th just after 9:30 P.M., Holtsville firefighters we called to a reported car crash with fire on the Long Island Expressway eastbound, just west of Exit-63. Arriving units were met with a fully-involved car on the shoulder of the highway. SCPD closed the highway eastbound while firefighters extinguished the blaze.

Mastic Works to Extricate Occupants After Crash Shirley, NY – On February 24th just after 12:30 P.M., the Mastic Ambulance Company was activated for an MVA in front of 862 Montauk Highway. On arrival, ambulance personnel found that there were people trapped in one of the vehicles. JUMP TO FILE# The Mastic FD 022717127 was immediately requested to the scene for a heavy rescue. Unit-1 responded to the scene. On their arrival, Lieutenant Chris Gross [512-71] directed his crew to go to work and pop two passenger side doors. Firefighters immediately put the Hurst tools in operation and worked with members of the ambulance crew to free the occupants. Once out of the vehicle, the occupants were taken to an awaiting ambulance for transport to a local hospital. Firefighters finished securing the vehicles and cleaning up all fluids on the ground before taking up from the scene. Fire Police was also on scene for traffic control. - JOHN WALTHERS

Driver Seriously Injured in Commack MVA
Commack, NY - Just before midnight on Friday, February 3rd, the Commack FD and EMS Corps. received a call for an MVA involving an overturned vehicle on the southbound Sagitkos Parkway, near the Long Island Expressway. EMS arrived to find a single car overturned with the driver still inside, in and out of consciousness. Crews from Rescue-9 used hydraulic equipment to extricate the driver with assistance from members of Engine Company-2. The occupant was extricated and placed into the hands of EMS personnel, who then transported him to Southside Hospital with serious injuries. The driver was arrested the following morning on drug and weapon charges.

Ronkonkoma, NY - In January, firefighters from Ronkonkoma FD were activated for the report of a car into a small frozen lake but when they arrived, they were met with the bumper of a car protruding from the ice covered lake. After further examination, the boys were able to save the bumper. No further car parts were found in the water.

Flames Engulf School Bus in Smithtown Smithtown, NY - The Smithtown Fire Department was toned out for a bus fire on Tuesday morning, February 14th at 8:31 A.M., with a location of Plymouth Boulevard and Parnell Drive. The bus driver, with one student aboard, was in the process of making JUMP TO FILE# school pick-ups 021717119 when he observed smoke coming from under the dashboard of the vehicle. Both the driver and the student were able to safely evacuate the bus before it caught fire and became totally engulfed in flames. Smithtown firefighters quickly worked to bring the blaze under control. No injuries were reported and the fire is under investigation by the Suffolk County Police Department. On scene were Chiefs 4-2-31 (Landrigan) and 4-2-33 (Diecidue), Engines 4-2-1 and 4-2-5, Rescue 42-9 and Ambulance 4-2-6-1. Units returned to their stations at 9:23 A.M. - JEFF BRESSLER

Car Versus TractorTrailer in Brentwood Brentwood, NY - The Brentwood Fire Department and Brentwood Legion Ambulance responded to a motor vehicle accident on Crooked Hill Road near Pilgrim just after 4:30 P.M. on Monday, February 6th. Centereach Firefighters Use Newly Installed Tools to Free Driver
Centereach, NY - On February 18th, firefighters were activated for a reported motor vehicle accident with possible entrapment at Route 25 and Eastwood Blvd. in Centereach. Firefighters, using newly installed rescue tools on their engines, were able to make quick work of a door pop and freed the driver. Several patients were transported to an area hospital for treatment.
