Shirley, NY - On Wednesday, December 7th, the Brookhaven Fire Department was operating a mutual aid for Mastic Beach FD as the RIT team at a house fire. At about 2:35 P.M., they were then activated for a report of a car fire on Montauk Highway and Smith Road. Driver Arrested After Crashing into House
Shirley, NY - Suffolk County 7th Pct. officers, along with Brookhaven and Yaphank firefighters responded on December 29, 2016 just before 11:30 P.M. to an incident where a car drove through two lawns, taking out two fences, a pool deck and a pool filled with water, before crashing into the kitchen of the home and flooding the interior of the house with water from the pool. Witnesses stated that the male driver was able to free himself from the car before proceeding to remove all of his clothing and flee on foot. SCPD officers were able to catch the man a short time later. The driver was transported to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital, located in East Patchogue, for treatment. Police stated that charges are pending at this time.

Tractor Trailer Rollover in Holtsville Holtsville, NY -On December 19, 2016 at approximately 10:00 A.M., the driver of a tractor trailer lost control of the truck while making a right-hand turn onto Waverly Avenue. The truck then rolled over and onto a rolloff truck that was waiting at a traffic light. Both drivers were shaken up from the incident but uninjured. Firefighters secured a large fuel leak and took up about 25 minutes later.

Mastic, NY - In December, the Mastic FD helped Santa out by giving him a ride on one of their fire trucks.
Working Structure Fire in Southampton Southampton, NY - On Thursday, December 8, 2016 the Southampton Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire on Longview Road in Southampton. First chief arrived onscene and had dispatch re-activate as JUMP TO FILE# a 13-35. Heavy fire 120916104 was found on the #3 side of the house. Crews were able to quickly knock the fire down, which was located in the rear of the building. Interior crews checked for extension and performed overhaul. Hampton Bays Fire Department was requested for RIT, while North Sea Fire Department was requested for a tanker to the scene and a pumper to stand-by in Southampton District. The Suffolk County fire coordinator was also on-scene. Bridgehampton Fire Department was requested later to stand-by at Southampton FD headquarters due to a second structure fire located in Southampton Village. Southampton Volunteer Ambulance and Hampton Bays Ambulance were also on-scene for firefighter assessment. One occupant was taken to Southampton Hospital for a nonlife-threatening injury. The Southampton Town Fire Marshal's office was also on-scene. The cause of the fire was believed to be from an unattended bag of fireplace ash left in the enclosed rear porch. - CHRIS BRENNER

One Person Killed and Six Others Injured in Crash

East Northport, NY - Firefighters from East Northport were dispatched on the evening of December 26, 2016 to a car accident that involved four vehicles. The crash sent one car off the roadway and into the side of a pizza shop on Larkfield Rd., killing one person and heavily entrapping a second. In all, seven people were transported to area hospitals from the scene. SCPD 2nd squad detectives also responded and investigated the crash site.

Quick Stop in Medford Saves Home
Medford, NY - Just before 10:00 P.M. on the night of Friday, December 9th, Medford firefighters were alerted to a reported structure fire on Florida Avenue. Firefighters made an aggressive attack through the garage, quickly knocking down fire in the interior wall of the garage just as it was extending into the second-floor of the residence. Miller Place, NY - Members of the MPFD Hook and Ladder Co. celebrated the holiday season at their annual Christmas party.
Shirley, NY - On Saturday, December 4th, the Chamber of Commerce of the Mastics and Shirley hosted one of the largest Christmas parades on Long Island. The event, which is held every year, is seen by thousands of spectators and includes many community organizations, from William Floyd High School's Football team, NJROTC cadets, to the scout programs. A large portion of the parade is also made up of the volunteers from the local fire departments and ambulance compa-

The Brookhaven, Mastic and Mastic Beach Fire Departments, as well as Shirley, Mastic and Mastic Beach Ambulance Companies, all bring out their loyal members to march and parade the apparatus down the parade route. The parade route is approximately 1.4-miles long and runs from
the Khols on Montauk Highway to the Mastic Fire Department. In addition to marching in the parade, the Mastic Fire Department also assists in delivering a special treat safely to the community. The department members are responsible for escorting Santa Claus through the parade route on their department's float and making sure he arrives safely at the end. Car Crash in Mt. Sinai Injures One
Mt. Sinai, NY - On the afternoon of Friday, December 2nd, two cars collided almost head-on on Crystal Brook Hollow Rd. and Hallock Road. Firefighters responded from Mt. Sinai and Terryville Fire Departments due to border location and contained all fluid leaks while also securing the cars. An injured person was transported to a local hospital by Port Jefferson Vol. Ambulance Service with unknown injuries.

Shirley, NY - On Wednesday, December 7th just before 2:00 P.M., the Mastic Beach Fire Department was activated for a report of a house fire at 71 Manor Drive. First Responders from SCPD and Mastic Beach EMS reported back to their dispatchers that they could see a large column of smoke before arriving. Fire-Com reached out to Mastic Beach FD officials to advise them of

First responding firefighters were faced with a heavy fire load from the second-story of the home. Under the command of Lieutenant Artie Surrey (5-13-71), fire-
fighters from Mastic Beach and Mastic made an aggressive attack. Brookhaven Fire Department was on-scene as a Rapid Intervention Team (RIT). Mastic Beach Ambulance was also on-scene, providing EMS coverage. One firefighter was reportedly injured. The scene was placed under control in about 30 minutes. - JOHN-PAUL WALTHERS

Multiple SUVs Crash Through Fence in Selden Selden, NY - On the afternoon of December 4, 2016 three people were injured after two SUV's collided in the intersection of County Rd. 83 and Old Town Road. The accident sent both vehicles crashing through a fence, landing in the backyard of a house on the corner. Firefighters secured both SUV's. Coram FD responded with an ambulance to assist with the transport of multiple patients.

Wrong-Way Driver Sends Four to Hospital Shirley, NY - On the evening of December 15th, the Brookhaven FD and Shirley EMS were toned out for an MVA on Cr.-46 southbound and Flintlock Drive. As the arriving units came onto the scene, they found a four-car MVA that was caused by a wrong-way driver. Firefighters went right to work, using the Jaws-of-Life to free a person that was trapped. The Brookhaven FD chief requested an engine from Mastic FD to the landing zone, while EMS transported one person to it. SCPD took over the scene to investgate the cause of the MVA. The road remained closed for about four hours.

Icy Roads Cause Rollover on Christmas Eve
Holtsville, NY - On Christmas Eve night, just after 9:00 P.M., Holtsville firefighters responded to Woodside Ave. for a car on its side. Icy road conditions caused the driver to lose control and roll the car onto its side. The driver was able to selfextricate and firefighters secured the car.

Firefighters and Police Save Seven Dogs from Blaze Medford, NY - On December 14, 2016 just after 8:00 P.M., firefighters from Medford responded for a reported structure fire at 185 Southaven Avenue. First Chief on-scene advised of a working fire, started a size up and then requested mutual aid from three departments. Firefighters and SCPD 5th-Pct. officers were able to gain entry through a side door and remove six dogs from the burning structure. A seventh dog escaped on his own. Meanwhile, other firefighters from Medford made an aggressive attack through the front door, quickly knocking down the blaze. Medford Chiefs declared the fire under control about 40 minutes later.

Brookhaven Firefighters Battle Fully Involved Auto Shirley, NY - On Wednesday, December 7th, the Brookhaven Fire Department was operating a mutual aid for Mastic Beach FD as the RIT team at a house fire. At about 2:35 P.M., they were then activated for a report of a car fire on Montauk Highway and JUMP TO FILE# Smith Road. Chief 120716116 Tom Connors advised that his units would take up from the mutual aid and respond to the vehicle fire call. On arrival, Chief Connors advised that he had a fully involved car on Montauk Hwy., located on the shoulder near Smith Road. Chief Connors directed Fire Police to close Montauk Highway to the west of the scene. Engine-2 immediately stretched a line and the crew went to work, dousing the car to get control of the flames. Once the flames were out, the crew went to work securing the vehicle. The alarm was placed under control within 25 minutes. The SCPD assisted with closing Montauk Highway to the east of the scene and the NYSDEC Police helped to close Smith Road from Wertheim Wildlife Refuge to Montauk Highway while the firefighters were working. - JOHN-PAUL WALTHERS

Mastic, NY - On Thursday, December 8th at approximately 10:00 A.M., crews were dispatched for an MVA on Patchogue Ave., near Roberts Road. The Mastic Ambulance Company was activated and responded to the scene. On arrival, EMS workers found that a car had struck a tree. The driver was able to self-extricate and was evaluated by EMS. It is unknown what injuries the driver sustained.

Mastic Driver Loses Control and Crashes into Pole Mastic, NY - Just after 1:00 P.M. on December 8, 2016 the Mastic Fire Department and Ambulance Company responded to a call for an MVA on Montauk Highway, located near Hawthorne Street. On arrival, rescue workers found that the driver of the sole vehicle involved JUMP TO FILE# had struck a PSEG 120916128 electric pole, causing signifigant damage to both the car and pole. The driver was able to get out of the vehicle on his own and was evaluated by EMTs, who then transported him to a local hospital. Members of the Mastic FD, under the direction of Ex-Chief Clay (5-12-34), made sure the car was secure. Ex-Chief Clay requested PSEG to the scene to repair/replace the damaged pole and wires. Fire Police were also on-scene to divert traffic while the members operated. The scene was later turned over to police and PSEG. - JOHN-PAUL WALTHERS

Hundreds Mourn Loss of West Sayville Ex-Chief Warren Horst West Sayville, NY - The West Sayville Fire Department is sad to announce that Ex-Chief Warren Horst has answered his last alarm. On Monday, December 19th at 7:12 A.M., West Sayville was dispatched for an EMS alarm at the home of one of their own members. Beloved member, Ex-Chief Warren Horst, had fallen victim to an apparent cardiac arrest. Although herculean efforts were administered by both fire department personnel and Community Ambulance personnel, Warren died at Southside Hospital a short time later. Warren was a 47-year member of West Sayville and was also the former Suffolk County Chief Fire Marshal, Past President and Secretary of the Islip Town Chief's council, West Sayville-Oakdale Fire District Secretary, and he also held numerous other titles throughout the department, county
JUMP TO FILE #010317108 and town. A familiar face and reassuring presence to all who knew him, Warren’s mark on the fire service will forever be remembered. Firematic services were held at West Sayville’s Headquarters on Thursday, December 22nd which was attended by hundreds of firefighters, as well as numerous County, State and Local officials. Warren’s family requests that in memory of Warren, donations be made to the Islip Town Firefighters Museum. Donations can be made payable to the West Sayville Fire Department, who will distribute all donations as a whole. - HARRY D'ONOFRIO
