2017 Lt. Joseph DiBernardo Foundation Seminar Held on Long Island Yaphank, NY - The Joseph DiBernardo Memorial Foundation provides life saving training and systems to fire departments across the United States. Each year the foundation holds a seminar to help promote this training. This year's seminar was held during the JUMP TO FILE# weekend of No- 110617123 vember 3rd and 4th on Long Island. The first day of the seminar was held at the Suffolk County Fire Service Academy in Yaphank. This day was to be dedicated to hands-on training. The day began at 8:00 A.M. with an opening ceremony and a special dedication. The Joey Foundation had donated a new Flashover simulator to the Suffolk County Fire and Safety Academy. The simulator, which cost $30,000, will replace an older simulator that has been in service since 2008 and outlived its lifespan. After the dedication, students went to their assigned training sessions. These sessions included things like the fire safety maze at the Academy and the use of a Flashover simulator. There were also classes on Advanced Vehicle Extrication. This class involved a
car being pinned completely under a bus. In this exercise, the firefighters had to work with many tools to get the bus raised enough so that they could be able to remove the occupants that would possibly be trapped. For this scenario, mannequins were used for safety reasons. Other excerises included live fire simulations where crews had to work to extinguish fires in residential and commercial structures that the Academy uses during regular trainings for Suffolk County Departments. Firefighters also had to search for any potential victims in the buildings. After each evolution, instructors would recap what went on during the exercise and give tips/feedback to the men and women who participated. On November 4th, the seminar continued with classroom training which was held at the E.C Murphy School in Stony Brook. This day included many guest speakers teaching on various topics, including some about how to avoid firefighter injuries and deaths while working on scenes. The training was a big success, with firefighters from multiple states attending both days.
