Firefighters Pull Multiple Pets from Burning Home in Mastic Mastic, NY - On the morning of Tuesday, May 8th at about 9:45 A.M., the Mastic Fire Department was called to the scene of a structure fire on Van Buren Street, off Meadowmere Avenue. On arrival, firefighters found flames and smoke coming from a sin- JUMP TO FILE# gle-story home. 050918101 Mutual aid was requested from multiple surrounding departments to assist. Upon searching the home, it was determined that no one was inside. However, firefighters removed three cats and one dog from the home. EMTs from the Mastic and Mastic Beach Ambulance Companies treated the animals for smoke inhalation by providing them with oxygen. According to the Suffolk County SPCA, the cats and dog were taken to an animal hospital for further treatment and evaluation. Officials stated that two of the cats and the dog are expected to make a full recovery, however some lizards and the third cat perished. The Brookhaven Town Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fire, along with the Suffolk County Police Arson Squad. No injuries were reported to any civilians or firefighters according to a police spokesperson. - JOHN WALTHERS

On Saturday, May 26th, the Mastic Beach Volunteer Ambulance Company placed into service their new ambulance unit 5-39-17, a 2017 4x4 Ford F-450 that was outfitted by Hendrickson. The unit was first delivered on February 26th, however there were still some minor modifications that needed to be done, including mounting a plaque on the side in memory of the department's founding chief, Linda Bullock.
From Explorer to Chief, Joseph Luckman Elected to Head Elmont FD Elmont, NY - Joseph Luckman, a 16-year veteran of the fire service, is currently serving his first term as Chief of the Elmont Fire Department. Born and raised in Elmont, Luckman has spent his entire life in the area, where he attended Clara H. Carlson Elementary and Sewanhaka High School. During high school, he spent four years with the Elmont Fire Department Explorer Post 709, a youth division of the fire department that encourages young adults to learn more about the fire service and perhaps become a firefighter or emergency medical technician. The Explorer program made a good impression on Luckman, who, when not volunteering as a firefighter, works at Nassau County Fire Communications, and is responsible for dispatching fire departments all across Nassau County. “It is very rewarding being a part of the fire service,” said Luckman, who is also involved in the department’s community outreach. In addition to keeping residents safe, the department has a fire prevention unit that goes into local schools and teaches students about fire safety. Conveying this knowledge also ensures the community will remain a safe haven for years to come. Prior to his election as Chief, Luckman served a total of five years as a company officer, three

He is involved with the training committee as well as the recruitment and fund drive committees. “After a fire or medical emergency, it is gratifying knowing that we do something good every time the radio goes off,” says Luckman. His favorite part, however, is the comradery shared between company members. “We keep each other on our toes, but we always have each other’s backs,” he commented. In terms of priorities for the department, Luckman’s focus is on moving forward and showing growth in membership. Overall community safety, fire training and ensuring his department members get home safe after each emergency are among the Chief’s top priorities. The local volunteer fire department is comprised of residents who deliver emergency response services to the community, receiving policy and financial guidance and support from the Board of Fire Commissioners. Under Luckman’s direction, the department will continue to be involved in and represent the Elmont community. - MELISSA WEIR

Mastic Firefighters Stop Outside Fire from Spreading to Home Mastic, NY - On Friday, May 11th at around 11:55 P.M., the Mastic Fire Department was activated for a report of a house fire on Woodcut Drive, off Riverside. Chief Rudy Sunderman arrived and immediately began an investigation. He found some outside debris, including some logs, that had caught fire next to the deck of the home. The first-due engine went to work stretching a booster line to the rear of the home. The fire was quickly knocked down and the debris was then moved away from the home as a precaution. All units were back in service within about 25 minutes.

North Patchogue F.D. Dedicates New Quint in Memory of Fallen Navy Lt. Michael Murphy Patchogue, NY - Sunday, May 20th was a special day in the community of North Patchogue. The North Patchogue Fire Department recently took possession of new Quint ladder truck 5-17-2, and to commemorate the placing of the truck, a ceremony was held at the department's headquarters on Davidson Avenue. However, unlike most truck dedications, this one was particularly special. The truck was dedicated in memory of Navy Lieutenant Michael Murphy, who was a graduate of Patchogue-Medford High School and a US Navy SEAL. He was awarded the Medal of Honor
JUMP TO FILE #052218102 for his actions after he was killed in Afghanistan. The new truck 5-17-2 bears a photo of Murphy, as well as flag graphics and a picture of the medal with the slogan “Murph The Protector”. Murphy was always dedicated to his community and protecting his country. To commemorate the commissioning of the new Quint, Murphy's father, Dan, while flanked by cadets from the US Navy Sea Cadets Michael Murphy Division, gave a quick
speech and thanked everyone in attendance. After the speeches were given by Mr. Murphy and the dignitaries in attendance, the unit was christened by Michael’s mother, Maureen, who broke the bottle of champagne on the front bumper. Fire officials stated that it took a couple of years to get the truck, however it's an honor to commemorate a man who served his country. The truck is anticipated to be fully ready to roll within the next month. - JOHN WALTHERS

Fast Exit Leads to Overturn in Holtsville Holtsville, NY - On May 11th, a driver leaving northbound Nicholls Road at Furrows took the exit ramp a little too fast and lost control of their vehicle, leaving the roadway and flipping the car up against a fence. The driver was assisted from the car and transported to a local trauma center by Holtsville firefighters just after 4:30 P.M.

Multiple Departments Battle Blaze at Shirley Home with Collyer’s Mansion Conditions Shirley, NY - On Friday, April 27th at about 4:27 P.M., the Brookhaven and Mastic Fire Departments were both activated for a report of a house fire on Heston Road, off Flintlock Drive. Mastic Fire Chief Rudy Sunderman arrived on scene and immediately advised that he had smoke and flames showing inside the home, and to reactivate for a working fire. Brookhaven Engine 8 was the first-due engine. On arrival, the crew from Engine 8 immediately went to work stretching lines. Brookhaven Engine 5 was second-due and went to work assisting the crew of Engine 8 with stretching lines and trying to make a push into the building to make an interior attack. Due to Collyer’s Mansion (hoarding) conditions in the home, this attack became hampered and the crews were ordered by Assistant Chief

Assistance was requested from the Center Moriches, Mastic Beach, Yaphank and Hagerman Fire Departments on scene while the Bellport Fire Department stood by to cover additional alarms. Crews worked aggressively to knock down the fire. Due to the hoarding conditions, it was an extensive operation with heavy amounts of overhaul. The Shirley Community Ambulance and Mastic Ambulance were on scene to provide rehab for the firefighters on scene. No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire was being investigated by police and fire officials.

The Franklin Square and Munson Fire Department Explorer Post is made up of young men and women who range in age from 14 to 18. On Saturday, May 26th, as an act of Community Service, the Post visited the Franklin Square 9/11 Memorial on Naple Avenue next to the Franklin Square Historical Society building and placed flags at all of the 24 name markers that represent Nassau County residents who lost their lives on 9/11. They also checked the condition of the flags on the large poles and replaced any in poor condition.

Smoky Fire Sends Middle Island Residents Into the Night Middle Island, NY - Just before 9:00 P.M. on Thursday, May 17th, a smoky fire forced families from at least eight apartments outside after smoke detectors and sprinkler suppression systems activated at their apartment complex on Renaissance Blvd., in Middle Island. F i r e f i g h t e r s JUMP TO FILE# 051718110 from Middle Island, Coram, Ridge and Yaphank responded and quickly knocked down any remaining flames. The first-due chief reported next to no visibility on the secondfloor of the apartment complex and called for one line to the front door, as well as a vent team to the second-floor to clear the smoke. Multi-Vehicle Crash with Overturn Shuts Down Sunrise Hwy.
Shirley, NY - Brookhaven FD and Shirley EMS were dispatched out on June 5th for reports of an overturned van and several other cars involved in a crash on Sunrise Highway, westbound. Firecom radioed into Brookhaven's chief that there was possible entrapment in the van. The chief arrived on scene to find a van on its side and at least five other vehicles involved. The occupant in the van was not trapped. Rescue 3 and Rescue 4 arrived on the scene and firefighters went right to work to secure all the vehicles. Crews were released from the scene about 30 minutes later. The cause of the multi-vehicle crash is not known at this time.

Evening MVA Snarls Traffic in Mastic
Mastic, NY - On the evening of June 1st, the Mastic FD was activated for an MVA with possible entrapment on Mastic Road and Southaven Avenue. On arrival, Captain Gene Martucci advised that there was no one trapped, however units were to continue in for a fuel spill and to secure a vehicle. Firefighters placed speedy dry down and cleaned up the debris. While they were operating, the police directed traffic around the scene. At least one person was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. All units were back in service in less than 30 minutes.

Northport, NY - In support of local fire departments, Gershow Recycling donated the use of 30 cars for the 11th Annual Chuck Varese Vehicle Extrication Tournament, which was held at the Northport Fire Department’s Training Grounds at Steer’s Pit in Northport on May 12th. Gershow also donated the use of its Huntington facility to enable teams to practice in
JUMP TO FILE #052418108 the week leading up to the tournament. Nineteen teams from 11 fire departments participated in the tournament, which involved groups of five firefighters working to extricate a “victim” from a mock crash using
the Jaws of Life. Each team was judged on the amount of time it took to perform the extrication, the handling of equipment, and the safety procedures they followed. After the tournament, the vehicles were brought back to Gershow’s facility, where they were shredded and recycled. - GERSHOW RECYCLING CORP.

Early Morning Blaze Does Significant Damage to Shirley Home Shirley, NY - On May 25th at about 1:50 A.M., the Mastic Fire Department was activated for a report of a house fire on Lockwood Drive, between Moriches Middle Island Road and Flower Hill Drive. On arrival, Captain Gene Martucci found flames show- JUMP TO FILE# ing from the build- 052518111 ing and advised that it was a working fire. Chief Rudy Sunderman arrived a short time later and took over command. The first-due engine arrived on scene and members hit the hydrant to obtain a positive water supply. Crews went to work to put water on the fire as fast as possible. Mutual aid was requested to respond from Brookhaven, Ridge and Manorville Fire Departments. Crews worked fiercely and fast to knock down the fire. According to officials, no injuries were reported, however the home sustained heavy damage. Mastic Ambulance was on scene for firefighter rehab while Mastic Beach FD stood by at Mastic FD’s headquarters to handle additional alarms that came in while they were operating at the scene of the fire. Terryville, NY - On the afternoon of May 14th, a male in his 50's was riding a dirt bike in the woods off Avon Lane and Ciliotta Lane in Terryville when he crashed deep into the woods. SCPD and Terryville firefighters went into the woods, located the injured rider and brought him out. Because the patient was located so deep into the woods, Setauket's off-road gator was needed. The male suffered multiple injuries to his legs and was rushed to a nearby trauma center.

It is with extreme pride that the Northport Volunteer Fire Department announces the new Chief of Department for 2018-2020, Chief John Jacobsen. Chief Jacobsen joined the department in February of 1997 and has 21 years of service; a member of Hook and Ladder Company Number One, the Rescue Squad, Ex-Captain of the hook and Ladder Company, Hook and Ladder Co. Firefighter of the year (2009), and recipient of a lifesaving Medal in 2014. Chief Jacobsen is a veteran of the United States Army and has served our country in Iraq.

Hewlett, NY - On April 20th, the South Shore Volunteer Firemen's Association held their installation dinner at the Hewlett Fire Department. Officers were sworn in by Chief of the Hewlett Fire Department, Brian Kuhlmeier. Mastic Beach Ambulance Holds Open House One Last Time at Current HQ Mastic Beach, NY - Each year during National EMS week, local EMS companies open their doors to visitors from around the community. The Mastic Beach Ambulance Company was able to do just that on May 20th; however, this year was not like any other ordinary year. This would be the last Open House held at the department's current headquarters, as their new building is expected to be complete and operational by the
JUMP TO FILE #052818100 Fall of 2018. The department had multiple apparatus and pieces of equipment on display for the public to see, including their recently purchased Ambulance 5-39-15, a 2017 Ford F-450 unit. Members of the community were able to ask questions about the apparatus and also got to
see the inside of the ambulances. Members of the Mastic Beach Fire Department stopped by and did a vehicle extrication demonstration while the Suffolk Sheriff's Department came and helped make ID's for children. Driver Arrested for DWI After Three-Vehicle Collision Injures Two in Shirley
Shirley, NY - On the evening of May 4th, the Brookhaven Fire Department was activated for a report of a motor vehicle crash. The location was southbound on the William Floyd Parkway, south of Coraci Boulevard. On arrival, crews found a three-vehicle crash and went to work securing the vehicles. Shirley EMS treated two patients and transported them to a local hospital. One driver was taken into custody by police at the scene and charged with DWI.

Residents Injured at Working House Fire in Stony Brook Stony Brook, NY - Firefighters from Stony Brook FD, as well as multiple other departments, responded to a reported structure fire at 43 Hawkins Road in Stony Brook on May 4th. The fire appears to have started outside of the residence in a gas bbq, which JUMP TO FILE# then spread to an 050518105 outside wall of the home and continued upward until it gained access to the attic, forcing the male and female occupants to flee the home. The female occupant was treated and transported for smoke inhalation while the male was treated at the scene. Driver Crashes into Police Detective in Mastic Beach Mastic Beach, NY - On the evening of May 4th, a Suffolk County Police Detective radioed for assistance after being involved in a crash on Neighborhood Road, near Mastic Road. The Mastic Beach FD and Ambulance Co. responded to the scene. On arrival, crews found a two- JUMP TO FILE# vehicle MVA in the 050918103 intersection. It appeared that the police detective was headed east on Neighborhood Road when he was struck in the intersection near Handy Pantry and Track gas station. The officer refused medical treatment at the scene, while the driver of the other vehicle was put into an ambulance to be transported to a local hospital. The fire department made sure that the scene and vehicles were secure. The road was closed for about two hours as a crime scene unit from the Suffolk PD was called in to investigate. The driver of the civilian vehicle was later taken into custody, however it is unclear as to what she was charged with. - JOHN WALTHERS
