Gordon Heights, NY - On Sunday, May 7th at 6:20 P.M., Gordon Heights Fire Department was activated for a Signal 13 (Structure Fire) at 11 Beach Lane. Anyone within a five-mile radius could see the plume of smoke in the sky from the blaze. Firefighters arrived on scene and were met with a fully engulfed home, with flames visible from every window and through the roof.

Smithtown, NY - Around 8:30 P.M. on May 3rd, the Smithtown Fire Department was dispatched to a reported house on fire at 98 Sunrise Lane. There were numerous calls being taken on the alarm and additional reports of explosions being heard to the rear of the inci-

MVA with Overturn and Entrapment in Holbrook
Holbrook, NY - On May 4th, three cars collided on Broadway, overturning one car and trapping two people within. Upon their arrival, Holbrook firefighters removed the roof of the vehicle and freed two people. They were then transported to local trauma centers for further treatment.
Working House Fire for Nesconset Firefighters
Nesconset, NY - The Nesconset Fire Department responded to a working house fire at the corner of Lake Ave. S and Southern Blvd. on Sunday evening, May 7th around 8:20 P.M. Upon arrival, fire was discovered in a single-story private dwelling. Mutual aid was provided from surrounding departments. There were no reported injuries. Due to being suspicious in nature, the fire is under investigation by the Suffolk County Arson Squad.

Shed Fire Quickly Knocked in Smithtown Smithtown, NY - On Sunday, May 7th around 3:30 P.M., the Smithtown Fire Department was dispatched to a reported shed fire at the rear of 62 Eckernkamp Drive. First arriving units discovered active fire in a shed in the back of the house. The fire was quickly extinguished and there were no reported injuries. The cause of the fire is under further investigation.
Fully Involved Auto Threatens Exposure Building North Patchogue, NY - On May 16th just after 12:30 A.M., firefighters from the boro were activated for a reported car fire behind a building on E Main Street and Washington Street. SCPD arrived on scene and advised that the car was fully involved and in close proximity to the structure. The first-due engine arrived on scene, stretched a quick attack line off the front of the engine and went to work. Firefighters quickly extinguished the car fire while also protecting the threatened structure. All units took up about 25 minutes after the call was received.

Man Killed in Commack Two-Car Collision Commack, NY - The Commack Fire Department, Commack Volunteer Ambulance Corps and Dix Hills Fire Department were all activated for a motor vehicle accident with reported heavy rescue on the N Service Road near Commack Road. The call was received shortly after JUMP TO FILE# 5:00 P.M. on Sun- 053017104 day, May 28th. Emergency personnel arrived to find a two-car collision with three people trapped and one subject unconscious. Multiple tools were quickly put into operation by firefighters from Commack Truck-9 and Engine-13 while crews from Engine-3 and Engine-4, alongside the Dix Hills Fire Department, assisted with the operation. A total of three people were taken to area hospitals with unknown injuries. One man later succumbed to his injuries. The roadway was shut down throughout the duration of the accident and investigation. - EVAN ROLLA

Occupants Escape House Fire in Huntington
Huntington, NY - The Huntington Manor Fire Department received a call for a house fire Sunday afternoon, April 23rd, at 214 Beverly Road. Units arrived to find fire showing from a private dwelling and all occupants out of the house. A working fire was later transmitted, bringing in mutual aid from surrounding departments. The fire was quickly brought under control without incident and the cause is under investigation.

Mastic Firefighters Handle Fully Involved Auto
Mastic, NY - Just before 4:00 P.M. on May 16th, the Mastic Fire Department Chemical Company was activated for a report of a car fire at the intersection of Pineway Ave. and Mayfield Drive. On arrival, department members were faced with a fully involved auto and went right to work, stretching the line to make an attack. Members were able to quickly get a handle on the fire and extinguish the flames without incident. Chief Rudy Sunderman Jr. was in charge of the scene.

Mastic Beach Ambulance Co. Lays Founding Chief to Rest Mastic Beach, NY - On May 13th, Mastic Beach Ambulance Company Founding Chief, Linda Bullock, passed away. Linda was a life member of the department, as well as one of its charter members. She was very proud to serve her community. Department funeral services were held during the evening wake on May 17th at Wesche Funeral Home in Center Moriches. During the services, the Mastic and Mastic

Brentwood Firefighters Handle Car Fire
Brentwood, NY - On May 10th around 6:45 P.M., the Brentwood Fire Department and Suffolk County Police responded to a vehicle fire on Crooked Hill Road near G Road in Brentwood. Under the command of 3-2-30 and 3-2-31, firefighters from Engine Co. 2 and Truck Co. 1 worked together to quickly extinguish the fire. There were no reported injuries.

Driver Suffers Medical Emergency, Crashes into Pole Sound Beach, NY - On May 30th, firefighters responded to a car into a pole on N Country Rd. and Sound Beach Blvd. First reports stated that the driver was possibly in traumatic arrest, which turned out to be false; however, the driver was unconscious upon firefighters' arrival after he experienced a medical emergency prior to the crash. Gordon Heights Home Fully Engulfed in Flames Gordon Heights, NY - On Sunday, May 7th at 6:20 P.M., Gordon Heights Fire Department was activated for a Signal 13 (Structure Fire) at 11 Beach Lane. Anyone within a five-mile radius could see the plume of smoke in the sky from the blaze. JUMP TO FILE# Firefighters ar- 050817122 rived on scene and were met with a fully engulfed home, with flames visible from every window and through the roof. The first-due engine pulled a one-and-three-quarter inch line and went to work while mutual aid calls went out to the Coram, Yaphank, Middle Island and Medford Fire Departments, as well as Medford Ambulance Company. As units began to arrive, exposures were being secured by handlines and it became an exterior attack. After about one hour into the operation, Gordon Heights' chief declared the fire under control, but continued to battle hot spots for a bit longer. There were unconfirmed reports that a female resident was injured with burns to her hands. No firefighters were injured. The SCPD Arson Squad and Brookhaven Fire Marshal's Office responded to investigate. - CHRIS SABELLA

Suffolk County FRES Dedicates New Mobile Command Unit West Sayville, NY- The Suffolk County Department of Fire Rescue and Emergency Services recently acquired a state-of-the-art command post unit [Mobile Command Unit 1]. Mobile Command Unit 1 is a 2016 Freightliner command post outfitted by MBF In- JUMP TO FILE# dustries. 043017102 The unit is outfitted with technology to support the fire service in many aspects on a largescale emergency scene. Some items included are two antenna masts that help support multiple cameras attached to the outside of the unit, multiple viewing monitors, a large printer for map printing if needed, multiple radios, a mini dispatch room and much more. On the morning of Friday, April 28th, Suffolk County FRES held a special dedication ceremony for MCU1 at the West Sayville Fire Department in honor of exChief of Fire Rescue, Warren Horst. Warren, who passed away in December of 2016, had dedicated his life to the fire service on Long Island. In addition to being Chief of FRES, he was also a Chief Fire Marshal, ex-Chief and 47-year member of the West Sayville FD, past President and Secretary of the Islip Town Chief's council, Secretary to the Islip Town Fire Museum, as well as many other titles over the years. The dedication was attended by dignitaries, including Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, Suffolk 3rd District Legislator and chair of the Public Safety Committee Kate Browning, and Commissioner of Suffolk FRES Joe Williams. Also in attendance were members of Suffolk County Fire Rescue’s Communications Bureau, Fire Marshals, uniformed personnel from West Sayville, and Warren's beloved family.

Shirley, NY- On Sunday, May 21st, National EMS Week kicked off for 2017. As part of EMS week, Shirley Community Ambulance Company held an open house event at their headquarters. The event included demonstrations related to EMS work, such as how to use equipment, and tours of the building and ambulances. The company also used the event to help with recruitment efforts, encouraging adults and students to apply to become members.

Brookhaven, NY – Memorial day of 2017 was a bit of a rainy one, however that didn't stop the Brookhaven Fire Department from honoring those who this holiday is meant to honor. On Monday morning, May 29th at 9:30 A.M., their Memorial Day parade started as planned, beginning at the Bellport High School. Members of neighboring departments (Mastic and Bellport, along with South Country and Shirley Ambulance), marched and drove their apparatus down South Country Road to the intersection

Once at the memorial location, personnel lined up in front of the memorial and services were held under the direction of Brookhaven Fire Chief Giuseppe Loiacono. Elected officials on hand to speak included Assemblyman Dean Murray, 3rd District Legislator’s Office Chief of Staff Josh Slaughter, and Brookhaven Town Coun-
cilman Michael A. Loguercio, Jr. After the speeches, Assistant Fire Chiefs Peter DiPinto, Jr. and Dan DiPinto read the names of those members of the community who gave their lives in service to our country. Wreaths were then presented by many of the Fire & EMS Department reps and community groups that were present. Two Teens Die After Horrific Car Crash in Manorville Manorville, NY - Two 17year-old males were killed and a third seriously injured after the car they were driving in left a winding roadway and slammed into a tree on May 20th. JUMP TO FILE# One teenager 053117107 was pronounced dead at BMH Hospital, while a second died several days later. Firefighters worked for almost one hour to free the heavily entrapped teenagers. Good Samaritans Jump Into Action and Save a Life Port Jefferson, NY - On Thursday, April 6th, the Suffolk County Police Department and JUMP TO FILE #050417110 Suffolk County Fire Rescue & Emergency Services (FRES) received 911 calls reporting a car that went into the water at Port Jefferson Harbor. The accident happened at the Brookhaven Town Boat Ramp. At 5:33 P.M., Port Jefferson Fire Department received the call from Suffolk FRES regarding a water rescue. A unit with the Suffolk County Medical Examiner Office was first to arrive at the ramp to find an SUV submerged completely underwater. Heavy rain and wind made the conditions even worse at the time. Three good samaritans, including Neil DeVine of Port Jefferson Station, sprang into action as soon as they saw the accident. DeVine recounts what happened just minutes after the crash: "I was driving down the road, I see a car submerged in the water halfway nose down, back window open. Myself and three other men ran down the docks, one man jumped right in the water, I followed. It was really cold, I kind of froze up." Port Jefferson Fire Department requested mutual aid from

multiple neighboring agencies, including the Setauket Fire Department, Terryville Fire Department, Mount Sinai Fire Department, Stony Brook Volunteer Ambulance Corps and Selden Fire Department. Rescuers in protective rescue

Suspected Arson at Afternoon Shed Fire in Selden Selden, NY - During the early afternoon of May 30th, a fully involved shed fire in Selden was thought to have been the work of an arsonist after a kid was seen in the backyard of the home at 30 Ferndale Ave. just prior to reports coming through of smoke showing from the JUMP TO FILE# 053117104 structure. Selden firefighters responded and were met with flames reaching heights of 20-feet in the air, blowing out of the shed. Ex-Chief Nap and Firefighter M. Leavens made a quick advance while Firefighter T. Sauter opened up the structure, quickly extinguishing the flames. Mutual aid from the Farmingville and Centereach Fire Departments were requested to the scene. The fire was declared under control about 20 minutes into the blaze and all units took up at about 45 minutes later. - CHRIS SABELLA

Mother’s Day House Fire in Smithtown Smithtown, NY - The Smithtown Fire Department and Suffolk County Police responded to a reported house on fire at 9 Branch Dr. just before 6:00 P.M. on May 14th. The Chief of Department [4-2-30] was first on scene with fire showing from the front of the house. A working fire was then transmitted. Firefighters from 4-2-5 established a water source and began stretching handlines. Mutual aid was requested from surrounding departments. The occupants were home at the time of the fire, but were able to escape prior to firefighters' arrival and evaluated by EMS. They were taken to an area hospital for further treatment. The fire was quickly brought under control without incident. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
