Mini van vs pole with live wires down
Shirley NY: On March 7 2016 Brookhaven fd and Shirley ems was toned out for an mva with live wires down. Brookhaven fd chief and rescue trucks arrived on the scene to find that there was pole taking down by a mini van and there was wires down also. Firefighters had to use caution checking the mini van due to the wires. After check the mini van they found that there was nobody in it. Firefighters check the houses to make sure there was no fire. There was unknow injurys at this time. SCPD found the driver of the mini van.
Community Ambulance Public Narcan Training With our response to opioid overdose emergencies increasing in recent years, Community Ambulance Company and New York State Senator Tom Croci hosted a free training on how to recognize and respond to an opioid overdose to the public. The class was held on April 7, 2016 at the Community Ambulance Company headquarters at 420 Lakeland Avenue, Sayville NY and taught by Chief of Suffolk County
JUMP TO FILE #041116105 EMS, Robert Delagi. The training explained the effects of opioid overdoses, their causes and prevention and how in the incident of an emergency, respond by using intra-nasal Naloxone (Narcan). Narcan is a prescription medication that is used to temporarily reverse an opioid
overdose. Approximately 100 participants attended and now have the training that can potentially save someone’s life. Participants received a prevention rescue kit including certification cards and Narcan samples. Special thanks to New York State Senator Phil Boyle and the South Shore Coalition also for their attendance and help at the training. - ELIZABETH WHITE

House explosion in Mastic 7-3-11 at a gas leak Southampton

Mastic, NY. On the evening of March 7, 2016, 911 received a call for a house explosion with fire. Mastic Fire Department and Mastic EMS were toned out. Crews arrived to find windows on the one story ranch blown out and with light smoke in the house. The first due engine crew forced the door open and found no fire. Suffolk County Arson was requested to the scene. There were no reported injuries at the scene. The house was vacant. The incident is under investigation to find the cause of the explosion.

Heavy rescue at the scene of two car MVA On Friday night, April 8, 2016, Mastic Fire Department and Mastic EMS were toned out for an MVA. Chief Rudy arrived on the scene to find that he had one car with fluids leaking and had one JUMP TO FILE #041116126 person trapped. Mastic’sheavy rescue arrived on the scene along with SCPD ESU. Firefighters worked together with ESU to free the person, who was trapped. Mastic EMS packaged and transported the patient to a local hospital for treatment. Firefighters placed speedy dry down on the fluids. The cause of the MVA is unknown and under investigation at this time. - HAROLD JACOBS

Elmont makes quick work of basement fire
On April 8th at 9:07 p.m., the Elmont Fire Department was alerted by FireComm to respond to a house fire at 34 Silver Street. Chief Robert Schriefer arrived first and advised units of a fire in the basement of a two story home. Engine 3 and Truck 1 were the first fire units to arrive, followed shortly by the remaining EFD apparatus. Valley Stream Fire Department responded with a FAST team. Smoke was on all floors of the dwelling and a thorough search was made for victims and any spread of the fire. The fire was held to the basement area by the quick work of EFD personnel. Nassau County Fire Marshals were requested by Chief Schriefer to investigate the cause and origin of the fire. There were no reported injuries.
Plane crash with fire and entrapment
Bayport NY. On April 10th just after 7 p.m., just outside the Bayport aerodome, a two person Cessna crashed and burst into flames, trapping the pilot and a passenger. An off duty FDNY rescue firefighter and a Bayport firefighter were able to remove the occupants. A resident used a garden hose to keep the flames at bay until Bayport firefighters arrived and extinguished the fire. Both occupants were airlifted by SCPD helicopters to local trauma centers.

General alarm for East Farmingdale
On March 24, 2016, the East Farmingdale Fire Department was dispatched for a general alarm on Route 110. The fire was quickly extinguished and units were soon back in service. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Smithtown FD Holds 108th Installation The Smithtown Fire Department held their 108th Installation Dinner on Saturday, April 16th at Flowefield in St. James. In addition to the installation of chiefs, department and company officers, SFD announced service awards and Firefighter of the Year recipients. The highlight of the evening was the presentation of a 60 year service pin to Ladder Company 7 former Captain Jerry Melvin. For his continuous and still active dedication to the department, Melvin was bestowed the title of honorary chief.

Loving couple killed in afternoon fire Patchogue, NY. On April 7, 2016, firefighters from six area departments responded to a fully engulfed house fire, where a married couple were trapped within. Firefighters from Patchogue and area residents tried in vain to rescue the couple.

WWHAC chief calls in fire at her residence
On March 31st at 1:49 p.m., the Wyandanch Fire Company was alerted for a structure fire at 138 Jefferson Ave between Spruce and Beech Streets. The fire was being called in by 120-30 WWHAC Chief. She went on a rescue call to come home to find smoke coming from her residence. Luckily, the dog was safe. 1-10-8 was first on scene confining the fire to the kitchen area. The home unfortunately had smoke damage and extensive damage to the kitchen. No injuries were reported and WWHAC stood by at the scene. The town of Babylon fire marshals were investigating the exact cause.

Fatal structure fire in Brentwood

On April 7th at 10:23 p.m., the Brentwood Fire Department was activated for a structure fire at 17 Grant Ave. off Pine Aire Dr. Suffolk County Police advised they had a smoke condition on Pine Aire Drive. Brentwood’s chief went on scene confirming a working fire. Bay Shore Fire Department provided RIT at the scene. Brentwood Ambulance and Deer Park Fire Department stood by at the scene with ambulances. North Babylon Fire Company sent an ambulance to Brentwood Ambulance’s quarters. There was one civilian fatality. Town of Islip Fire Marshal and Suffolk County PD arson were on scene to investigate.

Centereach handles a different kinda fire Centereach, NY. Late Friday night, April 15th, Centereach firefighters were activated for a reported car fire with visible flames. As the first chief arrived, something wasn’t right with this car fire. In fact, there was no car, but something was burning in the roadway. Upon further investigation, it was found to be a fully involved skill saw that fell from the back of a pick up truck and burst into flames. Centereach firefighters battled the blaze with a water can for almost three minutes before the fire was declared under control. Units took up about 5 minutes later.

Smoke in duct work On February 23, 2016, the North Lindenhurst Fire Department received a working general alarm at 1000 Horizon Blvd at the GKN Aerospace Corporation. When they arrived, their was massive smoke in the duct section of the huge complex. Mutual aid was requested from Copiague, East Farmingdale, North Amityville and West Babylon Fire Departments.

Suffolk police officer and one other injured in crash Setauket, NY. On Thursday morning, April 14, 2016, a SCPD officer and another driver were injured after a minivan collided with the officer’s police cruiser, while the officer was responding to a report of an overturned car with fire less than a mile away. Both the officer and other driver were treated for injuries that they received from the air bags. All the injuries sustained were non-life threatening injuries. After both vehicles left the roadway, they crashed through a bush and hit a brick wall.

Another raging fire in Medford

Medford, NY Fire raged in Medford for a second night in four days. Medford Fire Department responded to a fully engulfed house fire just before midnight on April 26th. Firefighters arrived to find a fire ball shooting into the night sky from the rear of the home and quickly stretched hand lines to start the fight. Mutual aid was called
JUMP TO FILE #043016102 from two other departments to assist in the battle. After dumping at least 2000 gallons of water and making no headway, the chiefs decided to go to exterior operations and used a tower ladder to get a better hold.
The fire was quickly knocked down the blaze and handlines were again used to dampen down the remaining hot spots. All units took up after about two and half hours of overhaul and secondary searches. No injuries were reported, - CHRIS SABELLA

Car fire at scene of three car MVA
Mastic, NY. Mastic Fire Department was toned out for a car fire at the scene of and MVA on Montauk Highway on March 12. SCPD radioed back to let the fire department know that they had a working car fire. Mastic Fire Department’s chief was on scene and found that he had a well involved auto. The first due engine in went right to work and made a fast knock down. Two more engines came to the scene and crews gave a hand to the first due engine. The extent of the injuries are unknown.

Condo fire erupts in Medford
Medford N.Y. On April 21, 2016, as many as fourteen people were left homeless after a fast moving fire sweep through a condo building and totally destroyed six units in the Blue Ridge condos. Medford firefighters with mutual aid from five other departments battled the blaze for about two hours before declaring the fire under control. SCPD Arson Squad and Brookhaven fire marshals responded for an investigation into the cause,

Dump truck crashes into building
On the morning on May 4th, 911 took a call for a truck into a building at 1410 Old Northern Blvd. Roslyn Heights Fire Department was dispatched to the scene. As units arrived, they found that a six wheel dump truck, which was working on a hill, came down and crashed into a building across the street from a job site. Firefighters checked the building to make sure there were no people trapped or hurt. Those in the building were told to evacuate. The Roslyn building inspector was requested to the scene. The building had major structural damage. The dump truck could not be pulled out due to the possibility of the building collapsing. The cause of the truck to crash is under investigation.
