Dozens of Agencies Participate in Mass Casualty Exercise in Riverhead Riverhead, NY- On Saturday, April 14th, members from dozens of local EMS agencies, along with Suffolk Fire Res- JUMP TO FILE# cue, Nassau County 042718117 OEM, and police agencies from R i v e r h e a d , Southampton, Suffolk Police & Sheriffs and the NY State Police, held a mass casualty training exercise, known as "Operation Black Swan". This year’s exercise was held at Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead, and was an active shooter simulation. At about 8:00 A.M., a call was placed over the training channel of the radio by dispatch for a report of an active shooter in the hospital's ER. Riverhead Police responded to the building and requested assistance from additional police and rescue agencies. During the training, police escorted out dozens of persons who played victims to be treated by EMTs. Triage was set up and patients were initially treated and stabilized at the scene before being loaded into ambulances for transport to other local hospitals. A mock landing zone was also secured at the Riverhead High School in case a helicopter was needed. All patients were actually transported to the hospitals. Hospitals participating in the exercise included Southampton, Eastern Long Island, Brookhaven and Southside. The hospital budgeted $50,000 that was used toward the exercise. Every attempt was made to keep the exercise as real as possible, and the construction project taking place at the hospital helped do so. Instead of shutting down the hospital for the exercise and diverting real patients to other hospitals, the ER was kept open and a mock ER was set up in another section of the hospital. The exercise was considered a huge success. The results of the drill will be reviewed and anything that needs to be improved will be implemented.
