Early Morning House Fire in Smithtown RUSSELL CURLEY
Smithtown, NY - On September 17th, the Smithtown Fire Department was toned out for a residential structure fire at 4:29 A.M., with the location of 25 Eckernkamp Drive. Upon arrival, responding units went to work on a fully involved, two-story house fire. The three residents in the home, along with their dogs, were able to safely escape from the house as the fire gained intensity. The sound of smoke detector alarms woke up the family.
JUMP TO FILE #091916108 By 5:06 A.M., all exterior fire was knocked down, as well as most of the fire on the first level as firefighters began a push to attack the remaining interior fire on the second-floor of the home. By 5:36 A.M., the fire was fully knocked down, with units looking for any remaining hot spots as overhaul of the structure continued. All units took up and
returned to quarters at 6:18 A.M. Responding to the alarm were Smithtown Chiefs 4-2-30 (Murphy), 4-2-31 (Landrigan), 4-2-32 (Fitzpatrick) and 4-2-33 (Diecidue), Engines 4-2-2, 4-2-3, 4-2-4, 4-2-5, Rescue 4-2-9, Ladder 4-2-7, Fire Police 4-2-10 and Ambulances 4-2-61, 4-2-62, 4-265. Mutual aid was provided by Kings Park, St. James, Hauppauge and Commack Volunteer Ambulance. - JEFF BRESSLER

Selden, NY - During the early morning hours of September 19th, Selden firefighters responded to a reported structure fire, with one possible occupant trapped inside. Selden 1st Asst. Chief Peter Reimann entered the working structure fire through the front door without the protection of a hose line and began searching through smoke and flames for the reported missing occupant. Chief Reimann was able to find the occupant and with the help of others on-scene, they were able to remove the victim as firefighters began knocking down the fire. After the brave attempt made to save the woman, she sadly succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced at the scene. The SCPD arson squad and Brookhaven Fire Marshals also responded to the scene.

Win Six of Season Earns Flying Dutchmen the 2016 Suffolk County Total Points Championship West Sayville, NY - This past Labor Day weekend saw the Flying Dutchmen Drill Team of the West Sayville Fire Department cruise to their sixth tournament victory of the 2016 firematic competition season and add yet another title to their accomplishments this season, Suf-folk County Total Points Champions. Competing against eighteen JUMP TO FILE# other volunteer fire 092016106 departments from Nassau and Suffolk Counties at the Hagerman Fire Department’s train-ing facility on September 3rd, the Flying Dutchmen placed in five of the eight events com-peted to earn a total of twenty-two points for their day’s efforts, six ahead of the Islip Wolves and Bay Shore Redskins who tied for second place honors with sixteen points apiece. The North Lindenhurst Piston Knockers ended in fourth overall with fourteen points and the East Islip Guzzlers fifth with a point count of thirteen. West Sayville took an early lead after the second contest, B Ladder, and, from that point on, was at the top of the leader board for the balance of the day. The Flying Dutch-men fended off an initial challenge from Bay Shore midpoint in the drill when their lead was cut to just one point and, two events later, when both Islip and Bay Shore crept with-in four points. In the end, West Sayville had the tournament win wrapped up before the Buckets contest began with a seven point edge over their nearest competitor. It was the team’s 173rd tournament victory since going to its first firematic competition in Greenport in 1892. Along with the prestige of earning the 2016 Suffolk County Total Points title, the team’s seventeenth since the season points were first tallied in 1974, the Flying Dutch-men rose to the top in four of the eight individual contest total points for the year; Three Man Ladder, C Ladder, B Hose and Motor Pump. The top spots in the remaining four events were shared between North Lindenhurst (two), Central Islip and Islip. The West Sayville team earned its points with first place finishes in B Ladder (5.11 seconds) and C Ladder (9.20 seconds) and a trio of second place efforts in the Three Man Ladder (6.31 seconds), B Hose (8.16 seconds and Motor Pump (5.82 seconds) contests. The 2016 Labor Day Drill and Suffolk County Total Points Champions are coached by Frank R. Miller, Sr., Robert Marra and G. Queens Driver Killed in Rocky Point MVA Rocky Point, NY - An Astoria, Queens man was killed on September 24th after his car ran off the road and struck a tree on Rocky Point/Yaphank Road just before 8:00 A.M. The vehicle was headed northbound and had crossed over the northbound lane, striking the tree on the west side of the road. The accident occurred just south of Rocky Point High School. The Rocky Point Fire Dept. and SCPD 7th Pct. responded and the victim was pronounced on the scene. A crime scene was established and the road was closed in both directions from Whiskey Road to Route 25-A.

Three-Car MVA in Mastic Injures Two

Mastic, NY - A collision involving a 2016 Ford Mustang, a 2016 Chevy and a 2007 Ford (taxi) occurred at the intersection of Montauk Highway and Pershing Street just after 4:00 P.M. on September 24th. At least two people were injured and taken to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital by ambulance, with undisclosed injuries. The SCPD 7th Pct., Mastic F.D. and Mastic Volunteer Ambulance responded to the scene.

Car Strikes Telephone Pole in Ridge
Ridge, NY - On September 4th, authorities were notified of an accident on Middle Country Road (Rt. 25), between East Margin Road and Montauk Trail, that occurred just before 9:00 A.M. A woman driving a Toyota Corolla, who was believed to be traveling eastbound on Rt. 25, was severely injured and transported by a Ridge F.D. ambulance to Stony Brook University Hospital after she crashed into a telephone pole. SCPD's 7th Pct. and Ridge F.D. responded to the scene. PSE&G was also called to the scene to replace the broken telephone pole.
Yaphank, NY - Units responded to the intersection of Sills Road (CR-101) and the L.I.E north service Road on September 8th for an MVA. Upon arrival, crews found that the driver of a pick-up truck had escaped serious injury after colliding with an 18-wheeler. The woman driving the pick-up received only minor injuries after the Ram 3500 truck she was driving collided with the 18-wheeler at approximately 2:00 P.M. Officers from SCPD's 6th Pct., Highway Patrol and Motor Carrier Unit responded to the scene. The injured woman was transported by Yaphank F.D. ambulance to a local hospital with undisclosed injuries. The SCPD Motor carrier safety unit was investigating the cause of the crash. Members of the Y.F.D., under the Command of Chief Chris Austin, took the time to clean up the debris left in the road from the woman’s pick-up truck and were nice enough to take it to their quarters for safe keeping until she, or her family members, arrived to claim it.

Car Overturns After MVA in Mastic Mastic, NY - At approximately 6:00 A.M. on September 17th, a Cadillac CTS overturned on Montauk Hwy., between Park Avenue and Van Buren Street, after colliding with a work van. The Mastic Volunteer Ambulance Co., Mastic Fire Dept. and SCPD's 7th Pct. responded to the scene. The driver of the Cadillac was transported to a local hospital by ambulance with head injuries.

Axemen Motorcycle Club Holds Charity Ride The Axemen motorcycle club held a fundraiser/benefit ride on September 17th in an effort to raise funds for the the sick children of firefighters. The motorcycle run kicked off in Lido Beach, located in Nassau County, at approximately 11:00 A.M., and
