Car Crashes into Bay Shore House
Bay Shore, NY - Around 4:30 A.M. on Saturday, September 30th, the Bay Shore Fire Department, Bay Shore Brightwaters Rescue Ambulance, and Suffolk County Police responded to 55 Tern Court for a vehicle into a house. Upon arrival, crews discovered a vehicle that struck the front of the house, causing significant damage. The driver of the vehicle was uninjured and EMS was later released. Approximately 60 minutes later, it was determined that the house required additional shoring, bringing in Tactical Rescue Teams from surrounding departments. Crews worked well into the morning to further stabilize the house that had foundation damage to the basement and first-floor. Crews were released and placed back into service around 8:00 A.M.

West Sayville F.D. Flying Dutchmen Win Suffolk-Nassau Invitational Drill On July 29, 2017, the West Sayville Fire Department Flying Dutchmen Drill Team emerged as victors in the 55th Annual SuffolkNassau Invitational Motorized Drill hosted by the Central Islip Fire Department at their Wheeler Road training facility. The victory was the 6th this season for the Dutchmen, and marks the 10th time they have captured top honors since the drill was first run in 1963. Competing against a field of 24 contenders from throughout Long Island, the Flying Dutchmen compiled 24 points to outpace the competition in the eight contest event. The Flying Dutchmen got off to a fast start with first place runs in the Three Man Ladder (6.36 seconds),
JUMP TO FILE #091317120 Motor Hook and Ladder Class B (5.01) and Motor Hook & Ladder Class C (8.94 seconds) and a third place finish in Motor Hose Class C (12.94 seconds), giving them 18 points overall. Over the next four contests, West Sayville added 6 more points with a first place run in Efficiency (9.26 seconds), and a fifth place run in the Bucket Brigade (25.97) seconds. Rounding out the top-five finishers overall on the day were the West Hempstead Westerners in second with 19 points, the Islip Wolves in third with 15 points, the Lin-den-
hurst Snails in fourth with 14 points, and the Central Islip Hoboes in fifth with 13 points. The Flying Dutchmen are coached by Frank R. Miller Sr., Robert Mara, G. Scott Schrader and led by Captain Michael Marra, Lieutenants Frank R. Tree Stops SUV from Tumbling Down Hill
Farmingville, NY - Just after 11:00 A.M. on September 12th, a small SUV was exiting Nicholls Rd. northbound at Horseblock Place in Farmingville when the driver lost control on the turn, sending the vehicle off the roadway. The SUV was caught by a tree, stopping it from rolling down an embankment and allowing the driver to escape without injury. Farmingville firefighters secured the car and then used a portable wench to remove the SUV from its resting position.

Mastic Beach Ambulance Co. Breaks Ground for New State of the Art Headquarters Mastic Beach, NY - September 20th began a new chapter in the history of the Mastic Beach Ambulance Company as ground was broken for a new state of the art ambulance company headquarters. JUMP TO FILE# The new building 092217117 will be located right in downtown Mastic Beach at 343 Main Street, formerly known as Neighborhood Road. Chief of Department Charles Voelger was joined at the site by many people, including Brookhaven Supervisor Edward Romaine, Deputy Supervisor and Councilman of the 6th District Dan Panico, Mayor Robert Miller, representatives for Legislator Kate Browning, and Assemblyman Dean Murry’s Office. Also on hand were members from Stalco Construction, Architects/Engineers from L.K. McLean Associates, as well as about two dozen volunteers from Mastic Beach Ambulance. The new headquarters will be two stories and 18,000-square-feet in size. It will have five drive through bays, whereas the current building only has three one-way bays. This new design is expected to allow for improved response by giving members the option of exiting onto Main Street or Diana Drive. The bays will house up to 15 department vehicles, allowing for more room to store all the necessary vehicles and equipment indoors. Due to a lack of bays and space at their current location (which was built in 1990), some vehicles, in-
cluding an ambulance and responder unit, are stored outdoors under a tent next to the building. The new location will also include office spaces for all essential chiefs and officers, bunk rooms, a state of the art training room to hold meetings and practical trainings for the department members and youth squad, storage spaces for necessary supplies and equipment, and much more. All of these improvements are very much needed, as many people have stated that the department out-
grew the current facility close to 10 years ago. The department currently has about 100 members, 60 of which are active riding volunteer members who respond to calls 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. There are 30 life members and associate volunteers who do not actively respond to EMS alarms, but assist the company in other ways, as well as six paid members on staff responding to medical calls. The department averages about 2,600 alarms a year, however Chief Voelger estimates that number will
be closer to 2,800 in 2017. Overall, this new building will also revitalize Main Street and Mastic Beach, and “will be the start of the rebirth of Mastic Beach,” according to County Clerk Judith Pascale. Councilman Dan Panico stated that this was going to be the start of something great for downtown Mastic Beach. Mastic Beach, NY - Many fire departments across Long Island and even throughout the United States have Explorers or Junior Firefighter programs. The Mastic Beach Fire Department is no different. Their members meet twice a month for learning exercises and drills, and also participate in other department events such as parades, fundraisers for the unit, and more.
On September 21st, the Mastic Beach FD Juniors Post held their second monthly drill and invited us out to see them in action first-hand. That night, senior members of the Juniors Post, who are pack certified, were able to participate in a live fire training. The training simulated a car fire situation and took place on the department's training pad located outside of headquarters.
The crew of three was led by Junior's Captain Alex. They were assisted by firefighters from the department including Roy Arcuri and Kevin Barrett. The Juniors were able to learn techniques such as how to properly stretch the line, and proper hose and attack techniques. There were a few Juniors who are not currently pack certified, but attended the training as observers anyway for the learning experience.
During the course of the drill, an engine crew was on stand by (under the direction of post advisor Neal Chakmakian), with a precautionary line stretched in case firefighters needed to assist in extinguishing the fire. The Juniors however were very successful in extinguishing the fire, which for many was their first live fire training experience.

Vehicle Rollover Leads to Possible Arrest in Selden
Selden, NY - Late Thursday night, September 28th, a one-car accident involving an uphill rollover led to a possible arrest. SCPD administered a field sobriety test to the driver while the Selden Fire Department secured the car and used speedy dry to cover the fluids leaking onto the roadway. The driver was not injured.

Motorcyclist Killed After Colliding with Jeep East Moriches, NY - Just after 6:00 P.M. on September 25th, a motorcycle and a jeep collided on E. Moriches Road. The motorcyclist was rushed by ambulance to Peconic Bay Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Pickup Truck Crashes into Lobby of Selden Animal Hospital Selden, NY - Early on the afternoon of August 23rd, the driver of a pickup truck hit two parked cars on Middle Country Road in Selden before leaving the roadway. The vehicle took out a small tree before slamming into the lobby window of an animal hospital, causing structural damage and minor injuries to the driver. All people at the animal hospital were in the back of the building at the time of the incident, so there were no injuries.

Two-Car MVA in Mastic Beach Sends Multiple People to Hospital Mastic Beach, NY- On Thursday, September 21st, the Mastic Beach Fire Department and Ambulance Company were activated for an MVA at the intersection of Elder Dr. and Elm Rd. West. On arrival, Mastic Beach FD Chief Carlo Grover advised that he had a two-car MVA with JUMP TO FILE# negative entrap- 092817114 ment. One car went through a fence and the other was nosed into the woods. Rescue-4 pulled up to the scene and the crew immediately went to work to secure both vehicles and clean up fluids that were in the roadway. Engine-8 also responded and assisted with the cleanup. Crews from Mastic Beach Ambulance evaluated multiple patients at the scene and a second ambulance was requested to respond. In total, four patients were transported to a local hospital with minor injuries. Fire Police closed the road to keep the area safe while firefighters and EMS personnel worked. Suffolk Police were also on scene. The road was closed for about 30 minutes. - JOHN WALTHERS

Selden, NY - On September 14th, Selden firefighters were activated for a report of heavy smoke coming from a residence at 20 Inwood Ave. in Selden. As the first chief arrived, it was relayed to the responding engine that it was actually a fully involved car fire only feet from the garage and home. Firefighters quickly pulled a one-and-three-quarter inch attack line and went to work. A second line was pulled to cover the exposure. Firefighters aggressively fought the stubborn blaze, finally extinguishing the car with no damage to either exposure.

Mastic Firefighters Start Morning with Overturned Auto Scene Mastic, NY- On Saturday, September 9th, the Mastic Fire Department and Ambulance Company were activated for an MVA on Wavecrest Dr. in the area of Mastic Road. Crews responded to the scene and placed down speedy dry to clean up the fluids on the roadway, and also secured the overturned vehicle. The driver was evaluated by EMS.
