The 2016 New York State Champion West Sayville Fire Department Flying Dutchmen Drill Team members proudly pose with their collection of trophies garnered at the annual state firematic competition held on August 20, 2016 in Williamsville, New York. The victory was the team’s thirteenth state title and fourth of the 2016 season. In the center background is the newly introduced New York State Championship Cup crafted by Frank R. Miller, Sr. (pictured immediately to the left of the trophy) and donated by West Sayville in his honor which now returns to his hometown.
West Sayville Flying Dutchmen Capture Second Straight NYS Championship Title West Sayville, NY - The West Sayville Fire Department’s celebration of its 125th anniversary has just gained another facet; the 2016 New York State Championship title in firematic competition by the crack Flying Dutchmen drill team. Competing against forty-four other volun-teer fire departments from throughout the state on Saturday, August 20, in the Buffalo suburb of Williamsville, the West Sayville team persevered despite being plagued by in-juries over the past eight weeks to carve out its fourth tournament victory of the season and a back-to-back New York State championship title. For the Flying Dutchmen, the victory also earned them an unprecedented thirteenth state championship since the annual competition was first run in Riverhead in 1946. Last year’s co-champion Central Islip Hoboes, the second winningest competitor in state drills, trail the Flying Dutchmen in that regard by three wins. In total, the Flying Dutchmen earned seventeen points in the eight event tournament hosted by the Main-Transit Fire Department at its Main Street training facility while second place honors went to the West Hempstead Westerners who garnered fourteen points. The Islip Wolves and North Lindenhurst Piston Knockers finished out the day with twelve points apiece to tie for third place overall and the Lindenhurst Snails rounded out the top five with a fifth place effort of eleven points. West Sayville took an early lead with a first place finish in the tournament’s initial contest, Three Man Ladder, but slipped into second overall through the completion of the three contests that followed, B Ladder, C Ladder and C Hose. A second place finish in the B Hose contest lifted the Flying Dutchmen
JUMP TO FILE #082316115 to the top of the leader board once again where they remained for the rest of the drill with the help of a first place effort in the Mo-tor Pump contest. Placing in only half of the contests, although unusual for West Sayville, seemed to be the norm for the day among those in contention for the overall win. Of the top five overall in points, only the Islip Wolves were able to score in more contests ending up with point-earning places in five events. The Flying Dutchmen accumulated their points with first place finishes in the Three Man Ladder (6.49 seconds) and Motor Pump (5.87 seconds) contests; a second place effort in B Hose (8.32 seconds) and a third place in Cladder (9.22 seconds). With the tournament win the Flying Dutchmen were the first team to receive the new state championship cup – the Stanley Cup of firematic competition – since the Cen-tral Islip Hoboes retired the previous one with three consecutive state titles in 2013 to 2015. Especially rewarding about this rendition of the cup is that it was hand-crafted, as some of its predecessors were, by former competitor and now coach of the Flying Dutchmen, Frank R. Miller, Sr. and was put up for grabs by West Sayville in his honor. Team captain Michael Marra expressed his extreme pleasure over the opportunity to bring “The Cup” home to its birthplace, West Sayville, in the inaugural year of existence. The following day the 2016 New York State champs, as well as those members of the West Sayville Fire Department that had come out in support of the Flying Dutchmen, and the West Sayville Fire Depart-
ment Golden Eagles Senior Drum and Bugle Corps stepped off first in the accompanying state parade on Main Street in Williamsville. The entire contingent collected countless accolades for the team’s performance as they pro-gressed along the parade route until reaching the end point at the Main-Transit Fire Department’s training facility. When the parade was over and the judges’ results were tal-lied, the Golden Eagles Senior Drum and Bugle Corps learned that they had earned a first place in the Best Appearing Fire Department Musical Unit category and the fire depart-ment a third place as the Best Appearing Fire Department with 26 to 35 members in line. The Flying Dutchmen will be competing again in the upcoming weeks at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, August 26, 2016 in the annual Islip Town Volunteer Firemen’s Associa-tion’s Drill hosted by the Central Islip Fire Department at its training facility on Wheeler Road and again in the Hagerman Fire Department’s annual Labor Day Weekend Invita-tional Drill on Saturday, September 3, 2016 starting at 10:00 a.m. on the training grounds to the rear of its Headquarters station off North Dunton Avenue in East Patchogue. The 2016 New York State Champions are coached by Frank R. Miller, Sr., Robert Marra and G. Scott Schrader; led by Captain Michael Marra and Lieutenant Chad Leigh-Manuell; and, comprised of David Banks, Kristy Banks, Kevin Candido, Louis Christen-sen, Brian D’Onofrio, Patrick Garrett, William Hothan, Ryan Huguenin, Casey Johnson, Frank R. Miller, Jr., Robert Noonan, Richard Quenzer, Joseph Quenzer, Douglas Quenzer, Gary A. Schaum, Daniel Tenney and Ryan Tenney. - WEST SAYVILLE FD

Sayville, NY - Recently, the Sayville Fire Department and the Sayville Community Ambulance Company teamed up for some training and operations at the scene of motor vehicle accidents. Two challenging scenarios were created, requiring skills in vehicle extrication, and patient care and packaging that put all members working alongside each other to the test. The two agencies routinely respond together to alarms of fire and motor vehicle accidents throughout the community, but seldom have they had the opportunity to train and practice together. Thanks to the efforts of Lt. Dan Karl and Firefighter EMT Joe Golio, along with the support of the Chiefs Offices of both agencies, the morning drill was a success. All in attendance gained a better understanding of one another’s operation and what was required in order to provide the best level of service to the Sayville community. The drill promises to be the first of many.

What does a trash bag mean to you?
Let's think about what happens when we get a call for a house or apartment. The alarm comes in and we board our bright shiny fire apparatus, we make it through the traffic to the location, we connect to the hydrant, do a search and then work on suppression, then overhaul. But something may be missing. Where is the client in this equation? Are they on the other side of the barrier tape? Are they dressed? Who is there for the unfortunate person? I know the answer is the Red Cross, but who is there for them until they show up? We know that when the call is over, if we have a bad call, we can get help through the crisis team. The client is standing there, watching their life go into ruins. Do you have someone to put a blanket around them? Who takes them to a safe place so their trauma is reduced? So many times we may not understand what our client is going through in the hour or so until the Red Cross shows up, if someone called for them. Fire is a thief, but worse than a thief. The thief comes into the house and steals the television, or computer or something that THEY think is valuable. Fire comes in a destroys everything, things that are worth money and things that are worth
memories. Many of us have not experienced what a client really goes. Let's put on a new set of glasses. Your house is on fire. You may have been pulled out of the house or gotten out before it got too bad. You hear the crash of windows and see the roof cut open. You are standing watching things being destroyed by the fire. You may be in your pajamas, because during fire prevention you were told to get out fast. After the fire, you see that they are bringing out your sofa, television, computer, etc. You are given a trash bag, the same ones that are used in the fire station. You are told to gather all your possessions and put them in the bag and that you will only be able to go back into the house once, before it is razed or you are not allowed entry. You may or may not be able to use your car. Oh wait, your phone and all the phone numbers and insurance policies were burned in the fire, or stored on the computer, that is laying on the front lawn. Let us put ourselves in their place. How would we want to be treated or worked with during the fire? During our time of crisis? How many of your needs from Maslow's hierarchy of needs are being met? Maybe your department can teach your crews how to work with the clients. Maybe your department can do a drill with the Red Cross, where your people are put into a shelter, as a client. Go to another town during a big fire. Do not buff the job. Observe. Watch the people. Watch the emotions. Find out how you can truly help your neighbor, the client, the victim. Stay Safe Didymus McHugh

West Sayville Firefighters Save One of Their Own West Sayville, NY - When West Sayville Firefighter Kenneth Van Essendelft left his home on the evening of August 25th to attend his company meeting, he had no idea the adage “being in the right place at the right time” would come into play for him. Having time to spare, he decided to watch the fire department’s Flying Dutchmen Drill Team prepare for the additional contests included in the upcoming Islip Town Volunteer Firemen’s Association drill before stepping inside to attend the meeting. Moments later it happened - quickly and without warning - he collapsed next to the fence adjoining the practice road. Those standing nearby called out for an ambulance. Alerted by the cry for help, fire department members immediately rushed over to find their colleague suffering from seizures. As they began a patient assessment Van Essendelft slipped into a pulseless state and stopped breathing. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) was initiated and an airway inserted to aid in getting oxygen into his lungs. Simultaneously, an automated external defibrillator (AED), oxygen and first aid supplies were retrieved from
the apparatus in the firehouse and readied for use. Meanwhile, those fire department members not directly involved in providing medical care hurried to move cars in the parking lot to allow the responding Community Ambulance Company crew unimpeded access to the patient as well as kept onlookers at a distance and direct traffic. Manual resuscitative efforts were continued for several anxious minutes in accordance with instructions from the AED which, after analyzations and two shocks, restored Van Essendelft’s pulse. A quick response from the Community Ambulance Company found the patient to be revived and holding his own upon their arrival. At that point, patient care was transferred to the Community Ambulance responders while fire department members helped package and move Van Essendelft into the ambulance for transport to Southside Hospital. As it was, Van Essendelft was discharged from the hospital to his home one week after the episode and briefly made an appearance at the drill team’s state tournament victory party just two days after that.
West Sayville Fire Department Chief Lucus Domingo praised the quick, life-saving efforts of the firefighters and drill team members that responded to the call. The Chief pointed out that teamwork, in a much different form than had been underway at the practice session, meant the difference between life and death. Had they not been there to immediately intervene, the outcome might have been much direr. Chief Domingo gratefully commends the determined efforts of Captain Richard Quenzer, ExCaptain Michael Chiesa, Ex-Chief Gary A. Schaum and Firefighters Ryan Huguenin, William Hothan and Casey Johnson for providing life-saving care to their fel-low firefighter. Also instrumental in making the outcome a positive success were Captain Brian D’Onofrio, Drill Team Captain Michael Marra, Firefighters Patrick Garrett, Ryan Tenney, Daniel Tenney, Frank R. Miller, Jr., Casey Quinn, Jeremy Sommeso and Joseph Quenzer, as well as the balance of the Flying Dutchmen Drill Team. - WEST SAYVILLE FD
