Three Injured in 4th of July Car Crash Commack, NY - The Commack Fire Department and Commack Ambulance responded to a two-car collision at the intersection of Commack Road and Crooked Hill Road on the 4th of July. Three people were taken to area hospitals with unknown injuries.

Firefighters Make Quick Work of Structure Fire in Mastic Mastic, NY- On Saturday, July 29th at around 3:35 P.M., the Mastic Fire Department was activated for a report of a structure fire on Clinton Ave., near Hawthorne Street. On arrival, members advised that they had smoke showing. A working fire assignment was requested. Firefighters quickly went to working dropping a supply line and
JUMP TO FILE #073117117 hand lines. Upon entry, they found the fire and were able to make a quick knock down. As a precaution, some appliances were also removed from the house once the fire was extinguished. No injuries were reported.
Mutual aid was provided on scene by Brookhaven FD, while Center Moriches provided a standby crew at Mastic FD. Mastic Ambulance was on scene for support if needed. The scene was eventually turned over to the Brookhaven Town Fire Marshal’s office. - JOHN WALTHERS

SCPD Officer Injured in Car Crash Selden, NY - Just before 8:00 A.M. on Monday, July 17th, a Suffolk police car and another car collided on Adrirondack Dr. and Roslyn Ave. in Selden. Both the police officer and the other driver were injured and both were transported to a local hospital for treatment. Selden firefighters secured both cars and fluids. SCPD crime scene responded to investigate the crash.

Driver Trapped After Tree Falls on Vehicle Coram, NY - During the late afternoon of July 20th, a driver lost control, possibly caused by a medical incident, leaving the roadway and crashing into a wooded area. A tree fall on the car, trapping the driver. Firefighters arrived and removed the driver's side door with hydraulic tools, freeing the driver who was then rushed to a local hospital for treatment.

Hauppauge Firefighters Respond to Second House Fire in 12 Hours Hauppauge, NY - On Thursday, July 7th, the Hauppauge Fire Department responded to two working fires within 12 hours of each other. The first fire was reported around 4:32 A.M. at 51 Village Lane. Heavy fire was discovered on the first, second, and basement levels of the house. Under the command of 3-08-51, firefighters were able to extinguish the fire without incident. The second fire was reported around 2:37 P.M. at 73 Grissom Way. Heavy fire was discovered in the rear of the structure. Under the

The Central Islip, Nesconset and Smithtown Fire Departments assisted the Hauppauge Fire Department with both fires. Six Injured in MultiVehicle Crash Mount Sinai, NY - On July 29th, six people were injured and one was trapped after a multiple-vehicle MVA on Route 25A. Firefighters from Mt. Sinai and SCPD Emergency Services removed the car door using spreaders to free the trapped driver. Port Jefferson Ambulance Company supplied two ambulances, and Terryville supplied a third ambulance to transport the patients, who had multiple injuries, to area hospitals. Islip Fire & EMS Museum Opens After Years of Planning and Fundraising Central Islip, NY - It all started as an idea 26-years ago to create a place to preserve the history of the fire service in the Town of Islip. That idea then began to form the core museum committee JUMP TO FILE# which would in- 070917101 clude John Sunderland, Nick Campson and Bill Johnson of Sayville FD. They were joined by Ray Reilly Jr. of Bayport, Warren Horst of West Sayville and Rick Gimble of Holbrook, and given the task to come up with a plan to effectively preserve the history before it was gone for good. That plan would later end up including many different fundraising events, such as the Long Island Fire and EMS Mega Show, as well as Chili Cookoffs and other events to help raise funds needed to build the museum. The project also received many donations, and loans
of memorabilia and photos of the fire and EMS services from across the Town of Islip. Finally, the town board approved the 49-year lease of the property at 4 Courthouse Drive, which is located across from the Bethpage Ballpark in Islip. Finally, the dream became reality on June 24th. On that day, the grand opening of the museum was held with hundreds of people in attendance, many of whom were fire department personnel and their families. They were also joined by members of Suffolk County Fire Rescue, including the Deputy Commissioner of FRES, John Jordan Sr. Also joining in the celebration were dignitaries, including State Senator Tom Croci. Evening Car Accident in Shirley Shirley, NY- On Wednesday, July 26th at around 7:20 P.M., the Brookhaven Fire Department was activated for an MVA on William Floyd Parkway Southbound at Roberts Road. Chief Pete DiPinto Jr. arrived on scene and advised that there was a two-car MVA with negative entrapment. Rescue Trucks 3 and 4 responded to the scene. On arrival, the crews were put to work cleaning up a fluid spill and securing one car. Shirley Ambulance was on scene and checked out one patient who refused further medical attention. Units were placed back in service within a half hour.
Abandoned House Catches Fire, Possibly Caused by Fireworks Coram, NY - On the night of July 3rd, firefighters from Coram, Selden and Medford responded to a working structure fire at 435 Mill Road. Heavy flames were visible on arrival, and (two) one-and-three-quarter inch lines were stretched as firefighters made an aggressive attack, quickly knocking down the flames. The SCPD Arson Squad and Town of Brookhaven fire marshals were called to the scene after it was determined that fireworks in the area may have been the cause of the fire.

Car Versus Pole with Entrapment and Medevac in Hauppauge
Hauppauge, NY - Just after 1:00 A.M. on July 31st, a car traveling eastbound on the Long Island Expressway crashed into the guardrail just before the Exit 56 off-ramp, hitting a steel pole and trapping the driver of the car on top of the guardrail. Firefighters and EMS units responded and got to work to free the driver, who was then transferred to an awaiting helicopter for transport to University Hospital's trauma center.

Firefighters Put Jaws to Work Extricating Driver from Vehicle Crash Shirley, NY- On Saturday, July 15th around 11:20 A.M., the Brookhaven Fire Department was activated for an MVA with reported entrapment in the vicinity of Shirley Ambulance Headquarters at Plymouth Place and Montauk Highway. On arrival, Assistant Chief Dipinto advised that he had at two-vehicle MVA with one person confirmed trapped. Crews from Rescues 3 and 4 went to work to extricate the driver of the Hyundai. The Jaws of Life were used to complete the extrication. A helicopter was placed on standby, however the patients all ended up being transported by ground to a local hospital by Mastic and Shirley Ambulance Companies. Mutual aid was provided by South Country Ambulance.

Afternoon Kitchen Fire for Farmingville
Farmingville, NY - On July 17th, the Farmingville Fire Department was activated for an early afternoon kitchen fire at 20 Hettys Path in Farmingville. SCPD advised the chief that there was fire within the kitchen. Under the direction of Chief Smith, first-due firefighters stretched a one-andthree-quarter inch line through the front door, making an aggressive interior attack and quickly knocking down the fire. Firefighters from Ronkonkoma were assigned to the attic for possible extension. The crew was sent to the second-floor with an access ladder, where they were able to establish that there was no extension. Firefighters were able to remove a parrot from danger and ambulance personnel checked the homeowner for any medical needs. All units took up about 60 minutes later, as Brookhaven fire marshals responded.

Heavy Smoke Brings Five Departments to College in Selden Selden, NY - On July 20th, firefighters were called to the fourth-floor of the Smithtown Science building on the grounds of the Selden campus of SCCC after workers found heavy smoke filling the floor. Upon arrival, Chief of the Selden FD, Bill Xikis, activated for additional ladders and engines to the scene. Selden's tower ladder extended to the roof of the building while interior crews searched for the source of the smoke, all while in over 90-degree temperatures. Inside crews located the source as a fan motor that caught fire after a power surge in the area. Firefighters cleared the roof and checked for extension. Farmingville, Terryville and Centereach responded as mutual aid. All units took up about 45 minutes later. No injuries were reported.

Brookhaven Firefighters and Their Neighbors Knock Down House Fire in Shirley Shirley, NY- On the afternoon of July 11th, the Brookhaven Fire Department was activated for the report of a residential structure fire at 27 Probst Drive. County Fire Rescue also activated the automatic mutual aid plan and dispatched neighboring Mastic FD to the scene as well. On arrival, Mastic FD 5-12-34 advised that there was smoke
JUMP TO FILE #071617101 showing. Brookhaven Engine-8 was the first-due engine and the crew immediately went to work stretching lines. Mastic Engine-3 was second-due and went to work hitting the hydrant to secure a water supply. Crews then made
entry and made their way to the second-floor where they were able to locate the source of the smoke and quickly extinguish the fire. Bellport FD and Shirley Ambulance assisted on scene. Brookhaven Fire Marshals were also on location to investigate. - JOHN WALTHERS

Plane Makes Emergency Landing on Sunrise Hwy. Brookhaven, NY - On the afternoon of July 19th, a single-engine Cessna made an emergency landing after experiencing engine trouble. The pilot was able to land the plane on the westbound side of Sunrise Highway, avoiding a bunch of cars before steering the plane to the shoulder of the highway. There were no injuries reported.

North Patchogue, NY - An afternoon three-car accident on July 18th left one female unconscious and trapped while firefighters and SCPD emergency services officers worked four tools to free the woman. Extrication was completed after 30 minutes. North Patchogue firefighters were able to remove three doors and two posts. SCPD officers removed the other post before peeling the roof forward. A medevac was ordered, but it was decided not be used. Ambulance personnel transported the patient, who had life-threatening injuries, to University Hospital in Stony Brook. One other driver was injured, but their injuries were considered to be non-life-threatening.

Utility Truck Crashes into Tree and Overturns in East Islip East Islip, NY - The East Islip Fire Department and Suffolk County Police received a call for a reported motor vehicle accident with overturn in front of 79 Bayview Avenue around 11:40 P.M. on Saturday, July 15th. Addi- JUMP TO FILE# tional reports stated 071717146 that the vehicle struck a pole and was now on its side, with the driver trapped inside. Upon arrival of 3-5-30, it was confirmed that a utility truck struck a pole and then crashed into a tree, landing on its side and trapping the driver. Firefighters from 3-5-7, along with Suffolk County ESU, placed hurst tools and saws into operation to free the driver. Extrication took roughly 20 minutes.
