Dead Hydrants Hamper Springfield’s Bravest SPRINGFIELD, MA - An early evening fire on Wednesday, January 26th, heavily damaged an occupied three-story, wood-frame dwelling in the city’s McKnight neighborhood, and sent several residents out into the frigid winter air. Springfield Fire Alarm alerted companies to the reported porch fire at 115 Westford Ave. at 9:30 P.M. Companies from the Eastern Ave. firehouse several blocks away arrived on scene within four min utes of dispatch to find that the fire had already extended from the ex terior porch on the 'Delta' side of the dwelling into the attic. While crews began to mount

an interior attack, a major problem was discovered outside the build ing. When the closest hydrant was opened, no water came out. Mem bers hustled down to the next hy drant only to find the same result. After finding at least two more in operable hydrants, Westford Ave. command requested additional en gines to the scene to begin a relay pumping operation. Crews inside were forced to abandon their interior attack due to the water supply issue, and liter ally had to wait for water to restart
the fire attack. By the time the relay was set up, the fire had taken possession of the attic. Companies on scene were left with no other option than to open up with ladder pipes and darken down the visible fire before re-entering the building to chase hot spots and overhaul. After a brief investigation, the Arson Squad was able to deter mine the cause of the fire to be from a resident carelessly dispos ing smoking materials on the open air porch. No injuries were re ported and the displaced residents were assisted by the American Red Cross.

A Purposed Heart Chaplain’s Corner Pastor Fernando Villicana
But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion o f the king's delicacies, nor with the wine which he drank... (Daniel 1:8a) Singleness of purpose. ..this is not a foreign concept to the first responder. The very duties of these occupations cry out for a concerted singleness of our pur pose to fulfill the mission. It is es sential. This essentiality also applies to our spiritual lives. Only when we pursue God with single ness of heart do we find the peace that surpasses all understanding. If we seek with less than the whole heart, the result will be less than joy. Today w e're hearing an awful lot about culture. And it is for good reason - there is without a doubt, huge changes in the way people think as it relates to a long list of things. -politics -economics -race/racism -laws/freedoms -gender -family (by many) is being re defined. Daniel remained faithful and steadfast in the Lord no matter how much pressure was put upon him by his changing culture. He took a stand that could have led to his execution or, at the very least, enslavement or imprisonment. Daniel made a decision not to de file him self with food and wine
from the king's table. This was no trivial matter to Daniel. According to God’s Word, the food was unclean. Furthermore, God’s Word warned against par taking of strong drink (Prov. 20:1). This is why believing Jews usually added 3 to 6 parts of water to one part of wine. Finally, the king’s food and wine had most likely been sacrificed to false gods b e fore it was served. W hen Daniel and his three friends had to choose between obeying God’s Word and bending to the culture, they chose to obey God’s Word. They were stedfast on their convictions. They were determined to be faithful to the Lord and the word of God. A whole nation was taken into cap tivity. But one man decided not to bend or compromise under that captivity.
Galatians 5:1 Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke o f bondage. Indecision about God is de scribed in our English Bibles as "double-mindedness" - and dou ble-mindedness is a costly habit. With so much contentment at stake, why do we waver? Why don't we choose God more whole heartedly? Even though we say we desire fellowship with God, per haps we're simply not willing to let go of the alternative. We sup pose that there must be a way to have the best of both worlds.
"Draw near to God and He will draw near to you . . . purify your hearts, you double-minded" (James 4:8). W hat we need is the courage to pursue God with singleness of purpose. P a sto r F ernando Villicana F ire D epartm ent Chaplain

Early-Morning Work for Springfield Firefighters
SALEM, MA - Patricia (Koen) Marfongelli celebrates her last day as a Salem Firefighter with husband/DC Tony Marfongelli. Patty was the first female firefighter in Salem and is retiring after 36 years of service with the Witch City. Her father, James J. Koen Jr., died in the line of duty on February 23, 1981. She was able to work with her two brothers, Capt. Kevin Koen and FF James Koen. Congrat ulations Patty!
SPRINGFIELD, MA - An early-morning fire sent three resi dents out into the frigid cold and heavily damaged their two-story, wood-frame dwelling in the HillMcKnight neighborhood of Springfield on Sunday, January 30th. When the call came in at 4:30 A.M., first due companies Engine 8, Tmck 2 and the Rescue Squad, were literally just two blocks away. De spite their close proximity, heavy fire was already venting from the first floor on both the 'Alpha' and 'Bravo' sides of the dwelling when crews arrived on scene.

Members worked as quickly as the snow and icy conditions on scene would allow, stretching three lines on the dwelling to attack the fire on the porch and both floors si multaneously. Displaying excellent teamwork and discipline, crews managed to knock the fire down within 30 minutes, but would spend the next two hours overhauling the building and chasing hot spots. The temperature that morning
proved to be a problem (7-degrees at time of dispatch) for companies when it came time to pack hose back on the apparatus. So much in fact that Monroe command had to notify fire alarm that there would be a delay in getting companies back in service due to difficulty in rolling the frozen hose. The cause of the fire is under in vestigation by the SFD Arson Squad. All displaced residents were assisted by the Red Cross. - NATE ARNOLD
