Merrimack Firefighters Rescue Occupant from House Fire

Merrimack, NH - Merrimack firefighters arrived to find fire showing from the 'Alpha' side of a house on December 2nd. Command quickly struck a second-alarm, bringing in mutual aid to the scene and to cover the town. Crews made an aggressive interior attack to knock down the main body of fire. Merrimack crews rescued one occupant from the building. Nashua L1 performed ventilation. Crews had the fire knocked down a short time later. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Firefighters Save House in Sanborton Sanborton, NH - First due Laconia and Tilton firefighters made an aggressive attack to save an attached house to a large barn in a three-alarm fire on Thanksgiving eve, November 25th. The fire was dispatched at 7:18 P.M. for a fully involved barn at 158 Upper Bay Road in Sanbornton, NH. Automatic mutual aid was dispatched and first due engines from

JUMP TO FILE #112920111 Laconia and Tilton arrived to find the large barn well involved and spreading into the ell and large farmhouse. A second-alarm, followed a few minutes later by a third-alarm, were dispatched for mutual aid tankers for

water supply. The farmhouse received minimal damage, but the large barn was destroyed and collapsed. The fire was declared under control at 8:56 P.M., with extensive overhaul conducted throughout the night. No injuries were reported, and the fire is under investigation. - JAY HEATH

Nashua House Fire Quickly Knocked

Nashua, NH - Nashua firefighters made a quick stop of this house fire on Lockness Drive on November 25th. E6 arrived and had fire showing from the front bay window of the dwelling. E6 quickly stretched a one-and-three-quarter inch line into the dwelling and knocked down the fire. L3 ventilated and performed a search. All occupants were out prior to arrival. Crews remained on scene overhauling and checking for extension.

Crews Stop Barn Fire from Extending to Home in Brookline Brookline, NH - Brookline firefighters were dispatched to a reported structure fire on Townsend Hill Road on November 10th. Crews arrived to find heavy fire showing from a large barn, threatening to extend into the main house. A second and third alarm were transmitted quickly. Due to the location of the fire, limited water was available. Multiple mutual aid tankers from surrounding towns were called in to assist with water supply. Crews did a great job at saving the house and keeping the fire from extending into the dwelling. Crews remained on scene for several hours hitting hot spots. An excavator was called in to demolish the barn due to unstable conditions.

Three Alarms Struck at Hudson Warehouse Fire Hudson, NH - Hudson firefighters were dispatched for a Box Alarm at 9 Flagstone Drive around 5:00 A.M. on November 20th. Companies arrived on scene to find heavy smoke showing from an overhead door in the rear of the building. Command quickly struck a Working Fire, bringing in mutual aid companies. A water supply was established by Nashua E4, and a second and third alarm were struck shortly after. Large racks of rug were found burning in the warehouse portion of the building. Crews stayed on scene for several hours ejecting smoke and pulling out the rolls of rug to extinguish any remaining hot spots.

Texas: Frazier Lee Holbert, 57 Rank: Career Incident Date: September 9, 2020 Death Date: September 13, 2020 Fire Department: Carrollton Fire Rescue Initial Summary: On September 9, 2020, at approximately 3:00 am, Fire Captain Frazier Holbert went to bed at the fire station after returning from an emergency call. Soon thereafter, he suffered a stroke. Fellow firefighters later found Holbert unresponsive and transported him to a local hospital. He was subsequently transported to another hospital where he passed away on September 13, 2020. California: Charles Morton, 39 Rank: Wildland Part-Time Incident Date: September 17, 2020 Death Date: September 17, 2020 Fire Department: San Bernardino National Forest, Big Bear Hotshots Initial Summary: Firefighter Charles Morton, Squad Boss on the Big Bear Interagency Hotshot Crew, died during interagency fire suppression activities on the El Dorado Fire in the San Bernardino National Forest in California on September 17, 2020. The Big Bear Hotshots are local to the San Bernardino National Forest.

West Virginia: Richard "Rick" Todd, 58 Rank: Chief Incident Date: September 1, 2020 Death Date: September 23, 2020 Fire Department: Salem Volunteer Fire Department Initial Summary: While on duty, Fire Chief Richard “Rick” Todd responded to an EMS call where an individual had a known case of COVID-19. Fire Chief Todd subsequently contracted the virus and passed away on Wednesday, September 23, 2020. Illinois: Dylan Cunningham, 29 Rank: Firefighter/Paramedic Incident Date: September 30, 2020 Death Date: September 30, 2020 Fire Department: South Holland Fire Department Initial Summary: On Wednesday, September 30,

2020, Firefighter/Paramedic Dylan Cunningham was participating in a dive training exercise at the Haigh Quarry in Kankakee, IL, when he was found by fellow firefighters in distress. He was immediately taken to the Amita St. Mary’s Hospital in Kankakee and later transported to the Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, IL where he passed away a short time later. The cause of his death has not yet been determined and the incident is under investigation.

California: Jason Cortez, 42 Rank: Firefighter/Paramedic Incident Date: October 7, 2020 Death Date: October 7, 2020 Fire Department: San Francisco Fire Department Initial Summary: On Wednesday, October 7, 2020, Firefighter/Paramedic Jason Cortez was participating in a drill at the Mission District Training Facility when he was injured. Paramedics started immediate care and transported him to the San Francisco General Hospital Trauma Center where he succumbed to his injuries just before 1100hrs. An investigation into this accident is underway and the cause of his death has not yet been determined. Pennsylvania: Edward "Gary" Minnick, 65 Rank: Firefighter Incident Date: October 1, 2020 Death Date: October 1, 2020 Fire Department: Colmar Volunteer Fire Company Initial Summary: On Thursday, October 1, 2020, Firefighter Edward “Gary” Minnick was responding to an oil leak at a gas station. While in the utility truck at the fire department, he suffered a medical emergency and paramedics immediately performed life saving measures. All resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful and he passed away from an apparent heart attack.

Heavy Fire Damages Garage in Nashua Nashua, NH - Nashua firefighters were dispatched for a garage fire on November 17th. As E3 left quarters a large column of smoke could be seen. E3 reported a Working Fire on arrival and stretched a two-and-a-half inch line to knock down the heavy fire in the garage. C4 arrived and struck a secondalarm, bringing more manpower to the scene. Truck companies opened up and searches were performed. Four lines were stretched and operating to bring the fire under control. Crews remained on scene for extensive overhaul and to check for fire extension.

Concord Working Fire Makes for Quick Knock Down Concord, NH - City firefighters made for a quick knock down of a kitchen fire on Wednesday afternoon, November 4th. Concord Fire Alarm dispatched Engine 4, Engine 7, Tower 1, Rescue 4 and Battalion 54 at 2:25 P.M. for a kitchen fire at 61 Noyes Street in the city's south end. First due Engine 4 reported

JUMP TO FILE #110520105 heavy smoke banking down inside the two-and-a-half story singlefamily residence and requested the "Working Fire" assignment. Acting Battalion Chief Stone took command and firefighters

made for a quick knock down of a kitchen fire. All searches were found negative, and minimal damage was done in the residence as the fire was contained to the kitchen with no extension. No injuries were reported. The fire was declared under control at 3:00 P.M. - JAY HEATH

Female Suffers Burn Injuries from House Fire in East Haddam East Haddam, CT - At 12:24 P.M. on Tuesday, November 24th, the East Haddam Fire Department, with mutual aid from Colchester, Salem, East Hampton and the Bozrah FAST, responded to 33 Wildwood Road for a house fire. Salemâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Chief JUMP TO FILE# Car 21 arrived at 112420132 12:36 P.M. reporting a fully involved single-story woodframe residence. Colchester Engine 128 arrived at 12:38 P.M. and stretched a two-inch hose line to the 'Delta' side. Salem arrived next and stretched a one-and-three-quarter inch crosslay from Engine 128 to the front of the dwelling. Crews ran out of water and had to wait for East Haddam Engine 415 to arrive and give them their tank water. Tanker 215 set up their drop tank at the intersection of Wildwood Road and Laurel Lane. Gardner Lake Tanker 127 arrived next and nursed into the engine companies. Ladder 121 established a draft from Lake Hayward and filled the tankers. Ambulance 527 transported a female with burn injuries to Backus Hospital, who was later transferred to the Bridgeport Hospital Burn Unit. Local 892 Supports Backus Hospital Breast Health Initiative

Norwich, CT - Local 892 members were proud to once again support the Backus Hospital Breast Health Initiative this year. Our members wore their pink shirts on duty for the month of October to show support for the cause, as well as contributed to a donation that was delivered on Monday, November 16th. Norwalk Responds to Garage Fire

Norwalk, CT - The Norwalk Fire Department responded to a garage fire at 43 Plattsville Avenue at 5:20 P.M. Friday evening, November 20th. The fire burned inside the rear wall of the single-car garage and into its attic space before it could be extinguished. The flue pipe attached to a wood stove in the garage basement, below the garage, is believed to have contributed to the fire. There were no injuries from the fire and Fire Inspector Luca Feola is investigating the cause. Three engines, two trucks a rescue and Command Car responded to the fire.

VEHICLE NEWS The City of New Haven purchased a pair of 2018 Seagrave Marauder pumpers through the FASTrack program. Both of these pieces have 1750-GPM pumps and 750-gallon tanks. To the untrained eye, they are basically identical. They were delivered in early October 2020 and assigned to Engines 10 & 15.

Monroe, CT - Around 10:20 A.M. on Wednesday, December 9th, the Stepney, Stevenson and Monroe Fire Departments were dispatched to a report of smoke in a house on Hattertown Road. On arrival, the first arriving unit reported a two-and-a-half story wood-frame with heavy smoke showing and upgraded the assignment to a working structure fire. Companies encountered heavy fire on all three floors of the house. A brief MAYDAY occurred during the incident when one fire-

JUMP TO FILE #120920121 fighter suffered minor injuries due to a stair-step collapse. All companies were pulled from the structure and began a defensive attack. Soon after the decision to go defensive, ammunition and fireworks began lighting off inside the house, complicating problems further. Companies worked for an hour and a half before the fire was declared knocked at 12:19 P.M.

Companies from Long Hill and Trumbull Center in Trumbull, White Hills Co. 5 in Shelton, the Botsford Fire Department from Newtown, and the Oxford Center Fire Department from Oxford provided manpower and tankers to the scene. The Monroe Fire Marshal's office and the State Fire Marshal's office are working to determine the cause of the fire. - SAYJE BENJAMIN

Car Fire Threatens Home in Yantic Yantic, CT - At 3:49 P.M. on Monday, November 9th, the Yantic and East Great Plain Fire Departments were dispatched to 167 North Wawecus Hill Road for a car fire near a house. Engine 31 arrived at 3:58 P.M. and reported an active car fire about 10-feet from the residence. The crew stretched a one-and-three-quarter inch crosslay and extinguished the fire in a few minutes. There were no injuries, and the Norwich Fire Marshalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Office is investigating.

One Person Transported from Colchester Second-Alarm Colchester, CT - At 5:34 P.M. on Saturday, November 21st, the Colchester and Gardner Lake Fire Departments with the Yantic FAST were dispatched to 254 Buckley Road for a house fire. Engine 127 arrived at 5:46 P.M. reporting fire show- JUMP TO FILE # ing from the 'Bravo' 112220105 side of a two-story wood-frame residence. Engine 127 stretched a one-andthree-quarter inch hose line to the 'Alpha/Bravo' corner and darkened down the fire that was venting from the basement through the front porch extending all the way to the roofline. Gardner Lake’s second hose line went through the front door into the first floor. Tanker 127 pulled up behind their engine and nursed them, allowing the guys to make an interior attack. Colchester Engine 128 arrived at 5:48 P.M. and stretched a two-inch hose line into the walk-out basement on the 'Bravo' side where crews encountered a large volume of fire. Tanker 128 arrived next and tied into their engine. Rescue 127 lit up the scene with their light tower and filled SCBA cylinders with their cascade system. Ladder 128 arrived at 5:57 P.M. and set up in the driveway on the 'Delta' side. Crews worked the fire for about 45 minutes before placing it under control. A second-alarm with level 1 Tankers was requested, which brought assistance from Bozrah, Oakdale, Lebanon and Hebron. Ambulance 527 transported one patient with smoke inhalation to Backus Hospital. The Marlborough and East Hampton Fire Departments covered Colchester’s stations, and the Colchester Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating. - RYAN FLAHERTY

Vacant House Fire in Meriden Meriden, CT - On November 14th at approximately 5:30 P.M., all Meriden units were dispatched to a vacant house fire on the corner of Pearl Street and East Main. Wa l l i n g f o r d , JUMP TO FILE# Middletown, Berlin 111820121 Volunteers, and So. Meriden Volunteers were called for mutual aid. Meriden Police and Hunters were also on scene. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Wet Road Leads to Crash in Colchester

Colchester, CT - At 9:33 A.M. on Monday, November 23rd, the Colchester, Salem and Gardner Lake Fire Departments responded to Route 11 Southbound, south of Exit 6, for a car that struck a tree. Rescue 128 and Engine 121 arrived at 9:45 A.M. reporting a car struck a tree on the left side of the highway. Rescue 128 secured the vehicle while Salem members treated the driver and his son, who had both self-extricated. Ambulance 527 transported two male patients with minor injuries to Backus Hospital in Norwich.

Rescues Made at Boston Second-Alarm

Boston, MA - On December 2nd, Boston firefighters arrived to find heavy fire showing from this four-story brownstone on West Newton Street. Command arrived on scene and quickly struck a second-alarm. Ladder Companies made rescues out of the upper floor windows while the engine companies worked on extinguishing the fire. Several handlines were stretched to knock down the fire. Crews remained on scene overhauling and checking for extension.

There is absolutely no reason to go into what 2020 was like, we were all there. Instead, let’s look into 2021 with some optimism, hope and culinary adventure. January usually brings on plenty of resolutions and self promises, most often revolving around health and wellness. This is absolutely a good thing, and something I myself tend to partake in. But where I think we fall flat on those commitments is our diet. This is by no means a reference to “diets” like South Beach, Paleo, Keto or any of the other numerous ones out there. I am referring simply to what we are eating and how it will affect the resolutions and promises we made to

ourselves. Healthy food is connected to all sorts of negative connotations, whether it be “expensive” or “lacking in flavor”. Many of these are not true, and sometimes quite the opposite. Fresh produce for instance is almost always cheaper than the canned variety. And while flavor is highly subjective, many healthy recipes contain tons of flavor, usually in the form of good fats, fresh herbs and spices. It would be easy to say just throw some chicken on the grill or toss up a kale salad. These are obviously healthy for you and by all means if that’s what you enjoy, go for it. But sometimes I think the key to sustaining healthier eating habits lie in the more adventurous recipes. The ones that take what we would normally consider unhealthy, but delicious all the same, and flip it upside down using more nutritious ingredients and different techniques. When we make these recipes, it breaks up the monotony

of the “grilled chicken, sweet potato and broccoli” meals. These new and unexpected recipes keep us and our palates excited for more, hence the sustainable aspect of it all. I challenge you in 2021 to try and think outside of the box when it comes to your cooking. Think of foods that you may not make as often as you would like or should. Think…cauliflower. Yes, cauliflower gets a bad rap sometimes. But it is the perfect blank canvas for flavors and textures. And it just so happens to make a great alternative to mashed potatoes. When combined with sweet roasted garlic and some plain Greek yogurt, the cauliflower turns into a creamy dish that will make you forget about potatoes. This recipe has tons of flavor, nutrients and will certainly turn you into a believer that healthy food can be delicious. Here’s to a Happy and Healthy New Year!

Ingredients:

Two-Alarm Structure Fire in Waltham

Waltham, MA - At 11:54 P.M. on December 2nd, there was report of a fire at the Fernald School administration building. This building is in a large complex of abandoned buildings. Waltham Engines 3, 7 and 8, along with Tower 1, Rescue 1, Medic 1 and Engine 2 as the RIT were dispatched. Engine 8 signed off with fire showing and requested that Engine 7 take a hydrant at Trapelo Road, which is quite a distance from the fire. Deputy Randy Mullin (correct spelling) advised Rescue 1 to refrain from entering the building because of the building's condition. He then requested a second-alarm which brought Engine 1, Squad 5 and Ladder 2. Engine 4 was special called to supplement water to apparatus on the scene. After the fire was contained, Rescue 1 did a search with negative results. The State Fire Marshal was requested.

-Preheat oven to 375° F

-Cut the top off the whole head of garlic, place in foil. Drizzle with EVOO and wrap tight. Roast in the oven for 45 minutes or until soft and brown. -While the garlic roasts, cut the cauliflower into small pieces and place in a pot with a steamer basket. Pick and finely chop the rosemary, add to the cauliflower. Steam cauliflower for 20 minutes or until tender. -Put the cauliflower in a food processor with

yogurt. Squeeze out the roasted garlic into the cauliflower. Add a pinch of salt and buzz until combined. With

motor running add EVOO until smooth and creamy. Taste and adjust seasoning. AJ FUSCO

A dedicated group of volunteers provide Fire and EMS services to the Town of Carlisle under the command of Chief Bryan Sorrows. He became the department's first full time employee a few years back and has since implemented many noticeable and positive changes. This included adding a second ambulance to the fleet and efforts to revive mutual aid agreements. He is proactive and a welcomed change. The department operates an impressive fleet out of a congested one-story four bay station. This includes five engines, a rearmount quint, support vehicles and the two ambulances. Two of the Engine Companies are tandem axle tankers, requiring that one of them be stored dry outside because of limited garage space. The department also owns and maintains a pair of antique apparatus.

Three-Car Crash with Rollover in Abington CHUCK LOWE

Norwell has placed a 2020 Pierce Enforcer 1500-GPM pumper with 750-gallons of water in to service as Engine 4. It will be the primary engine out of the headquarters station. The 1996 International/Central States that was Engine 1 has been removed from service.

Scituate received a 2020 E-One Typhoon 1250-GPM pumper for Engine 1. It carries 500-gallons of water with a 30-gallon class B foam tank. The prior Engine 1, a 2012 model Typhoon, will become Engine 3 after it is refurbished.

Ladder Co. 2 in Quincy operates a 2019 KME Severe Service 109' tractor-drawn aerial. This replaced a less versatile remount that was assigned to the Wollaston Fire Station. It is currently the only tillered apparatus in the "City of Presidents".

Abington, MA - Around 1:15 P.M. on the afternoon of Wednesday, November 25th, the Abington Fire Department responded to a reported motor vehicle accident at the intersection of Plymouth Street (Route-58) and Summer Street. Companies arrived to find a three-vehicle accident, with one vehicle on its roof, partially on top of another vehicle. The occupant was removed from the vehicle prior to the fire department's arrival. There was a report of a child in the overturned auto, but after a complete search, no child was located. One victim was transported to a local hospital.

Working Fire in Taunton

Taunton, MA - Firefighters responded to 151 Hart Street for a reported building fire on November 22nd. First arriving companies found an outside fire that extended to the wall of a structure. The fire was quickly knocked down. There were no injuries.

Gardner Battles TwoAlarm Structure Fire

Athol, MA - On Monday, November 9th, the Gardner Fire Department responded to 22 Coburn Avenue for a reported building fire with people trapped inside. On arrival they found heavy fire conditions on the 'C' side of the building. A second-alarm was struck, bringing in mutual aid to the scene and for station coverage. They made a very aggressive interior attack and completed a primary search, and thankfully all occupants were able to get out prior to their arrival. Mutual aid from Westminster, Hubbardston, Ashburnham, Winchendon and Templeton assisted at the scene. Barre and Fitchburg were the cover companies.

Cats Perish in Leominster Working Fire

The Queen Anne Style Firehouse, located at 36 Woodland Street, was built in 1886. This was home to Worcester Engine 10 until 1979 when they were relocated to the Park Street station. The company was later disbanded in 2009. This building, now privately owned, was added to the National Register of Historic Place in 1980. CHUCK LOWE

Leominster, MA - At approximately 11:30 A.M. on Saturday, November 21st, Leominster Fire was dispatched to 65 Washington Street for the reported building fire. Heavy smoke was showing from the two-and-a-half story wood-frame upon arrival of first due companies. A working fire was struck by Deputy Cordio, bringing mutual aid from Fitchburg and Shirley to the fire, and coverage to the city. Engine 4 stretched a line and encountered heavy fire in the basement, however the fire was knocked down quickly with some extension to the first floor. Several cats were rescued, but did not survive despite resuscitation efforts by off-duty firefighters.

Overturned Vehicle with Entrapment in Waltham

Waltham, MA - On Friday, November 13th, the Waltham 911 center received a call for an overturned vehicle with entrapment in front of 75 Fuller Street. Engine 1, Squad 5, and Medic 1 were dispatched and found a female driver trapped inside her car. Deputy Brock Rowland arrived and requested Rescue 1 to the scene. The extrication went quickly, so Rescue 1 was cancelled. The female driver refused medical attention.

Car Crashes into Pole, Lands on Roof in Whitman

Whitman, MA - Around 6:30 P.M. on the evening of Tuesday, November 17th, the Whitman Fire Department responded to the area of 1190 Bedford Street (Route-18) for a reported motor vehicle accident with a rollover. Ambulance-249, Engine-243 and Car-3 responded. Companies arrived to find a single-vehicle accident with a vehicle on its roof. All occupants were reported out upon the arrival of the fire department. The car appeared to strike a telephone pole, then rolled over. One person involved in the crash was transported to a local hospital. Route-18 was closed for a small period of time as the scene was cleaned up, and National Grid repaired the damaged telephone pole.

Sunday Afternoon Fire in Fall River Fall River, MA - On Sunday afternoon, December 6th, firefighters re- JUMP TO FILE # sponded to 35 Ab- 120620103 bott Place, a narrow dead end street in the city's south end, for reports of a fire. Firefighters had smoke showing on arrival that Command said smelled like wire insulation burning. Engines 2, 4 and 5, along with Ladders 2 and 4, Heavy Rescue 1, and Car 3 responded. Engine 4 began fire attack and quickly knocked down all visible flames, then went to work opening up the walls to find the hidden fire. Greenfield Engine 2 once operated with this 1964 Maxim-S. It carried 500-gallons of water and was rated to pump just 750-GPM. The current Engine 2 is a 2015 Pierce Arrow XT that is capable of flowing twice that amount. It carries 750-gallons of water.

Weather Blamed for Afternoon Fire in Fall River

Fall River, MA - During a heavy rain and wind event on November 30th, with wind gusts reaching 60 mph, firefighters responded to 659 Bedford Street for a fire investigation. On arrival, Engine 2 reported flames showing from the roof. Engines 2, 9, and 12, along with Ladder 4, Platform 1, Heavy Rescue 1, and Car 2 responded. Car 2 called for an extra pump to be dispatched immediately and all companies went to work. Firefighters were forced into heavy overhaul on the roof using saws and power tools trying to expose the hidden fire along the roof line where the metal flashing met the outside walls. There was also heavy fire damage to the top floor. It appeared to investigators that the heavy wind had caused a power line to make contact with metal building components. The Red Cross provided shelter for one displaced resident.

Dump Truck Rollover Stalls Thanksgiving Traffic in Newton Newton, MA - Around 7:00 A.M. on November 25th, the Newton and Weston Fire Departments received a call for a dump truck on its side, located on I-95 southbound, prior to Grove Street. Weston dispatched Engines 1 and 4, along with JUMP TO FILE# Ladder 1 and Medic 112520108 1. Newton sent Rescue 1. The driver of the dump truck was uninjured, but 75gallons of diesel had to be contained. Thanksgiving traffic was impacted on the Mass Pike and I-95 for close to three hours. - PETER LOBO

This DVD is approximately 47 minutes in length and it covers a four-day New Yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s weekend in 2011-12. Within that time there was a total of 53 incidents. The fires took place in the districts of Hollywood, West Hollywood, North Hollywood, Burbank, Studio City, Sun Valley and Sherman Oaks.

Pretty much all of the fires involved autos, with and sometimes without extensions, to structures above. Most of the fires started in carports and some were in garages. All are spectacular, with many fully involved vehicles. That is the aim of arsonists! Some of the complexes are large with a whole line of cars in the carports, making for a horrific sight of burning. Firefighters are kept rather busy stretching handlines and raising aerials for ventilation. Each incident covered with a location, date, type of situation and which fire station is the first due in the district (ex. LAFD FS 27). Many expensive autos were destroyed. In the end there was an arsonist arrested. There was also a fire in an abandoned two-story church, but I do not think that it was attributed to the arsonist. There is no narration, just the information given on the screen at the start of each incident, however the viewer can hear verbal exchanges among the firefighters in the course of their operations.
