Two-Alarm Barn Fire in Richmond Richmond, NH - Around 7:25 A.M. on Friday morning, May 15th, Richmond fire was toned for a reported barn fire at 39 Mill Rd. Mutual aid was requested immediately for tankers as the standard practice for this area. Units on scene quickly reported a fully involved barn type structure and bumped the call up to a 2nd-alarm. First in companies made quick work in knocking the fire down and preventing extension to a much larger and older barn 10-15 ft. away.

Hillsboro Firefighters battled a 3-alarm fire at the Cousineau Forest Products in Henniker on May 31st.
Major Fire Destroys Henniker Wood Facility Henniker, NH - A major fire destroyed a wood processing facility plant at the Cousineau Forest Products at 1310 Old Concord Road on Sunday afternoon, May 31st. Multiple fire departments were brought in to help battle the blaze. Concord FAO received a call from a neighbor reporting heavy smoke coming from the mill building, and automatic mutual aid was dispatched on the initial dispatch of fire. A second-alarm was ordered at 3:22 P.M., followed by a report on arrival by the Henniker Fire Chief with the size up of a 100X200 mill building fully involved with multiple exposures, which were driven by strong winds into numerous piles of mulch, lumber and acres of brush spreading on the 26-acre site.
JUMP TO FILE #060220107 A second-alarm brush response was transmitted right away at 3:30 P.M. A downed power line, which was still live, hampered firefighting operations, as crews had to set up water sources and tankers to shuttle water in for this massive fire. A third-alarm tanker response was dispatched at 4:07 P.M., and then a third-alarm brush response at 6:07 P.M. The facility, which processes wood into playground surfacing, biomass fuel, chips and bark mulch, suffered its first serious fire under the Cousineau ownership. Cousineau, who is based in Wilton,
Maine, took over operations in Henniker about three years prior. Damage is estimated at a half-million dollars. The mill building collapsed into a smoldering heap of twisted metal and machinery, and numerous piles of lumber produced heavy fire most of the afternoon along with large bark mulch piles smoldering. The fire spread into the woods, calling for the third-alarm brush response. The fire was contained at 7:58 P.M., but crews remained on scene well into Monday afternoon wetting down hot sports and overhauling. The NH State Fire Marshal's office is investigating the fire. - JAY HEATH

Manchester Firefighter Massive Bow Warehouse Revived at Working Fire Guts Trash Center House Fire
Heavy fire showing from the rear of the warehouse.
Bow, NH - A massive fire destroyed a warehouse on Sunday evening, May 24th, and brought in mutual aid from nine communities. Concord Fire Alarm dispatched the fire at 11:29 P.M., with automatic mutual aid from Hooksett, Concord and Dunbarton right away. A Bow police patrolman reported a fully involved warehouse to Concord fire alarm, and first arriving Bow firefighters found the 12,000square-foot metal building approximately over 100'X100' with heavy fire showing. The building is the Bow Recycling Center, which receives construction debris and solid waste from large trash containers at area businesses, hauled in by contractors. The building is also the home of Zero Waste and Recycling Services, which is one of the companies that hauls to the center. The heavy fire destroyed two excavators and a loader, while the heat from the heavy fire warped some of the steel members and melted the steel siding, destroying most of the large warehouse. Bow

JUMP TO FILE #052620100 Fire Chief Mitchell Harrington reported that firefighters set up a water supply and accessed the town's water system, giving them plenty of water to fight the massive blaze. A second-alarm was transmitted and a special call for both Pembroke and Concord's Tower Ladders to set up and pour water into the massive warehouse throughout the night. Numerous portable deck guns and hands lines were also set up, bringing over 55 firefighters in to fight the blaze. The fire was knocked down and contained at 2:08 A.M., but firefighters remained on the scene into Monday removing the charred contents of the building and continued wetting down the pile of materials and rubbish, making sure nothing would reignite, until 3:00 P.M. The fire is under investigation by the Bow Fire and Police departments. - JAY HEATH
Manchester, NH- A working fire at 466 South Beech Street in the city prompted a "Firefighter Down and May-Day" on Monday morning, May 25th, at 10:30 A.M. First due Engine 9 found heavy smoke showing from a residential house as firefighters immediately entered to attack the fire and make searches. The 51-year-old city firefighter, who is a 24-year veteran of the Manchester Fire Department, was just inside the doorway when he collapsed. "He was part of the initial team that responded from Engine 9," Fire Chief Dan Goonan said. "It's such a matter of minutes in these situations. If he had collapsed on the second floor, they may have not found him and started CPR as quickly as they did. He is in serious condition, but given the conditions I'd say he is doing remarkably well." The firefighter remained unconscious and was listed in serious but stable condition.
JUMP TO FILE #052620102 Chief Goonan said the cause of the fire appears to be from an overloaded electrical cord and estimates the damages to the home to be around $75,000. The fire was knocked down by 11:00 A.M. "The Manchester Fire Department would like to commend the onscene crews, as well as AMR Ambulance and the Elliot Hospital staff for their tremendous efforts in saving the life of one of our firefighters," Manchester Assistant Fire Chief Brendan Burns said in a statement. "Today was a reminder of how difficult and dangerous our job can be, as well as an example of the tremendous emergency responders and hospital staff that our city is lucky to have." - JAY HEATH

It’s July and the last thing we want to do is turn on the oven, so let’s fire up those grills! When we are in the dead of summer, I try to use my grill as much as possible, whether at home or the firehouse. Most recipes that are ideal for cooking on the grill are fast cooking, making them perfect for those days that are just too hot to do anything. But instead of throwing a steak on and calling it a day, I try to keep it interesting and play with flavors, textures and techniques. Kabobs are ubiquitous with grilling but often fall short in the creativity department,
you know the ones I am talking about…protein, pepper, onion, repeat. But that is just way too boring for me, after all most kabobs sold pre-packed in the supermarket come exactly that way. Kabobs are the perfect vehicle for trying out new marinades and ingredients, so think outside the box! Kabobs require two things, the first being ingredient selection. Make sure to use proteins that cook fast like chicken, lean cuts of beef, lamb and even seafood. Chicken breast is great but I prefer boneless skinless thighs as they offer more flavor and are more forgiving when it comes to overcooking. They also take on marinades well. Beef can be tricky so I tend to use sirloin steak rather than something expensive like filet mignon. Pork tenderloin is fantastic because it cooks fast and the same goes for seafood, particularly shrimp. You must also think about
the other ingredients you will be using. Things like peppers, onions, tomatoes, zucchini, eggplant all work well because they do not need extensive cooking times. With the recipe here I use corn, something not often used on kabobs, but the key here is to “par-cook” it on the grill before skewering to make sure it cooks through. Besides ingredient selection, you also need to consider how you will cut your ingredients before putting them on the skewer, this ensures ingredients will cook through. Think about how fast each ingredient cooks and cut them accordingly. Leave quicker cooking ingredients bigger and slower cooking ingredients a little smaller. Kabobs are great for feeding crowds and this recipe for Mexican Shrimp and Corn Kabobs will certainly be a hit at your next BBQ! Stay safe, eat well!
MEXICAN SHRIMP AND CORN KABOBS Serves 4-6
Ingredients:
For Kabobs: 1 lb. Shrimp, peeled and deveined 2 Ears of Fresh Corn 2 Limes, 1 sliced thin / 1 cut into wedges Handful of Fresh Cilantro, rough chopped EVOO Kosher Salt Fresh Cracked Pepper Chili Powder Skewers, if using wood soak for at least 30 minutes Procedure:
-Preheat grill to high.
-Grill the corn with husk on for about 10 minutes, turning frequently. Remove and let cool. When cool to the touch, peel husk and cut into 2” pieces.

Firefighters held the fire to the rear second floor and attic above. No injuries were reported and the cause is under investigation.
-To make the kabobs, alternate shrimp, lime slices and corn. Brush kabobs with olive oil, season with salt, pepper and chile powder. Oil the grill grates and grill the skewers for a few minutes per side, or until the shrimp just starts to turn pink. Garnish with cilantro and lime wedges.

Tractor Catches Fire Inside Franklin Barn Franklin, CT - At 6:33 P.M. on Tuesday, May 19th, the Franklin Fire Department was dispatched to 393 Lebanon Road, at Cushman’s Farm, for a tractor fire in a JUMP TO FILE # cow barn. At 6:35 P.M., 052220112 WW Dispatch began taking calls saying that the barn was on fire so it was upgraded to a firstalarm, bringing in Lebanon, Bozrah and Yantic. Ladder 126 arrived second and laid 1,000-feet of five-inch down the driveway to the rear of the barn and gave Engine 206 their tank water. Franklin Engine 225 arrived next and gave Lebanon their 1,000-gallons. Yantic’s Engine 33 finished Bozrah’s lay back out to the street and set up as the drop site engine. Franklin Tanker 125 positioned in the rear and nursed the first arriving companies while Lebanon’s Hose Tender 106 reverse laid to a pond 1,200-feet down the road and established a draft. The fire was under control in about 30 minutes. Tankers from Baltic, Bozrah, Lebanon, Windham Center and East Great Plain sat in staging but were not utilized. Fully Involved Home Spreads to Five Autos and Two Exposures in Springfield Springfield, MA - A fastmoving fire destroyed a two-story home and five vehicles, and damaged two other homes in the Old Hill section of Springfield on the afternoon of Saturday, May 9th. The blaze required two alarms worth of companies to knock JUMP TO FILE# down. Members of 051320103 Engine Co. 8, Truck Co. 2 and the Rescue Squad were enjoying a brief moment of peace and calm in their firehouse on Eastern Avenue, nicknamed "Springfield's Fire Factory" for their heavy workload, when an excited neighborhood resident ran for the front door of the station. Gaining the attention of the man on watch, the resident indicated there was a fire on Terrance Street, three blocks from their current location, and as the bay doors rolled up, the members were greeted with a large column of black smoke visible from the front ramp. After a short response, crews found an occupied two-story frame dwelling on Terrance Street fully involved along with five cars and trucks parked around the building. To make matters worse, a strong wind was fanning the flames and radiant heat was attacking both the 'Bravo' and 'Delta' side exposure buildings, as well as spreading embers to neighboring streets. Chief 2, DFC Marcellin, struck a second-alarm when advised of the conditions on scene by Engine 8 and second-alarm companies were split between two streets so as to surround and drown the fire. With hand lines and ladder pipes surrounding the fire ground, companies brought the fire under control within 20 minutes. The damage to the property however was significant. The original fire building was a total loss, along with five vehicles and exposure buildings sustaining several thousand dollars worth of damage. Two residents were left homeless by the fire. The cause remains under investigation.

This is the third disk of the set of five and features Rescue 3, which covers the Bronx and three battalions in Manhattan. Like the other two previously reviewed, it is 60 minutes in length and starts off with the same introduction sung by Fontana Bass. A second brief presentation follows, featuring fires of the past. At this point the viewer may think that he or she has the wrong disk, but low and behold it eventually gets to Rescue 3 footage. Unlike the first two disks where a member of the company introduces himself and orients the viewer about the responsibilities of the rescue unit, this disk does not have a formal introduction. You will see fires and collapses that the company responded to during 1998 and 1999, and see a training session on the search cam which is a long instrument used to be inserted within a collapse area to search for life and other conditions. Also is a tour of the inventory of the collapse unit, which is the second section of Rescue 3 which is a tractor-drawn vehicle. One of the collapses is in lower Manhattan involving a parking garage in which some 50 cars were destroyed. Heavy equipment was brought in to retrieve the cars and each had to be searched for possible casualties or fatalities. A second collapse of the building under repairs is featured. Five Alarms Needed to Quell Auto Shop Fire in Easthampton Easthampton, MA - A busy work day for a local auto repair shop turned terrifying shortly after 12:30 P.M. on Friday, May 22nd, when the shop's employees were warned that the building was on fire. An alert Easthampton Police Of- JUMP TO FILE# ficer who was out 052420124 on routine patrol was the first to discover that the 50'x200' long building housing Full Tilt auto body was on fire, and made sure that the shop employees, who were unaware at the time their building was burning, evacuated safely while the alarm was sounded at the Easthampton Fire Department. The EFD responded quickly, bringing two engines and a ladder-tower to the scene, but the fire, which had taken possession of the open web truss roof by this point was spreading from the 'Alpha' side to the 'Charlie' side quickly. Chief David Mottor wasted no time in striking alarms in rapid succession. The 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th alarms were sounded within 45 minutes. Mutual aid crews from Northampton, Southampton, Hadley, South Hadley, Amherst, Holyoke, Hatfield and West Springfield soon descended upon Easthampton, responding either to the scene for manpower or to the station for city wide coverage. Conditions on scene deteriorated rapidly early on with the fire taking total possession of the building, resulting in a structural collapse that caused minor injury to firefighters who were operating inside when the collapse started and were struck by falling debris. Thankfully, all members of all responding fire departments were able to pull out of the structure and switch to a surround and drown attack. Four aerial master streams, deck guns and large caliber hand lines were deployed to all sides of the building. While the building is a total loss, crews managed to keep the fire contained to the building of origin. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the EFD, the EPD and the Massachusetts State Fire Marshal's Office. The Easthampton community has already rallied around this long time city business. As of this article's writing, a GoFundMe page set up to take donations to help the owners rebuild had already received several thousand dollars in donations. - NATE ARNOLD
