Fairview Firefighters Honor a 9-11 Hero Fairview, N.J - Borough volunteer Firefighter Clifford W. Russell responded to the World Trade Center after the 9-11 attacks on our country. As he did in Fairview, he was there to assist and protect others. Firefighter Russell assisted in the recovery effort on “the pile” at the South Tower, on September 12th and 13th, 2001. In September, 2020, he lost his battle with 911 related cancer. On the morning of September 22nd, local and area firefighters assembled at Macagna Funeral Home to pay tribute to another
JUMP TO FILE #092420101 victim of 9-11. Members of the FDNY assisted in funeral preparations and joined their New Jersey firefighters in paying their respect to Firefighter Russell. Russell was a member of Engine Co. 3, on Walker Street. His flag covered casket was placed on former Engine 3's fully restored 1945 Mack pumper. This beautiful piece of apparatus was supplied, and driven, by its owner, retired Teaneck Lt. Tim Moots.
Firefighters, and the Bergen County Firefighters Pipe Band marched down Anderson Avenue and stopped at the Walker Street firehouse. There, Ex-Chief Pat Buglione offered a tribute to Russell and firefighters in general. A bell was tapped representing the last alarm. The procession then proceed to Our Lady of Grace Church, a few blocks away. Another brave first responder, who didn't think twice about helping others at the Towers, has left us. Never Forget. - RON JEFFERS

Smoky Three-Alarm Fire in Weehawken Weehawken, N.J. - Flames and smoke tore through a large twoand-a-half story dwelling on Highpoint Avenue, September 15th. North Hudson Fire Control dispatched a full assignment to a report of a fire in the rear of an Oak Street address. This was followed by calls reporting a fire on Highpoint Avenue, one block south. It was later discovered that occupants of an
JUMP TO FILE #091720127 Oak Street home called it in when they saw flames coming from the rear of the Highpoint Avenue dwelling. A column of smoke was in the sky and visible to incoming North Hudson Regional Fire & Rescue
companies that were dispatched, after 8:30 a.m. Firefighters removed several occupants from a secondstory ledge with ground ladders. There was heavy fire in the basement and flames had already extended to upper floors. Second and third alarms were quickly sounded, fearing the fire might extend to a dwelling on the east side of the fire building. It took about an hour to get the
main body of fire under control, but there were hidden pockets of concealed fire that kept firefighters busy for quite some time. The Weehawken police crime scene unit was on the scene for the investigation. The Jersey City Gong Club canteen unit set up a rehabilitation area on Palisade Avenue.

Covid Delayed Awards Presented in Wallington UPS & DOWNS Notes from Ron Jeffers
Due to several emergency delays, and COVID-19, several 2019 awards issued by members of the New Jersey & New York Volunteer Firemen's Association were presented at Wallington Engine Co. 202's firehouse on the evening of September 21st. In addition to these awards, the Wallington Fire Department recognized members Richard Kapusta, Kenneth Doviak and Joseph Ivanicki Sr. for 50-years of dedicated service. Mary Ann Palmer, of Hose Co. 3 Ladies Auxiliary, received the New Jersey & New York Volunteer Firemen's Association 2019 Ladies' Auxiliary Leadership Award. For nearly half a century, Palmer has served her community and supported her firefighting family. Over the years, her husband, ex-Chief Charles Palmer, has served with the fire departments of Wallington, Rutherfod and Lyndhurst. Their three sons are also part of the fire service. Palmer has served as trustee, vice president and president, as well as the auxiliary's treasurer for the last 40-years. She has been involved in fundraisers, Christmas fares and dinners. In addition, Palmer has led the auxiliary in efforts for the company's memorial services, anniversaries, parades and wet downs. Market share growth, increase revenue and geographic expansion by the way of delivering on the promise of increasing the service and the distribution footprint in the northeast region. “This is an exciting day for Campbell” said Scott Campbell, President of Campbell Supply Company. “As we welcome the Cruzan family to the Campbell family and work to grow to combine businesses, we see many opportunities for additional expansion into the emergency vehicle market in the state of New Jersey. Our long term strategy is to further broaden our geographic foot-
print with increased capabilities for each location to offer a comprehensive suite of products and services in support of fire truck and emergency vehicle sales and service.” Campbell said. Dale Cruzan, Sr. started his business in the late 1960’s as Dale’s Automotive Service and alongside his wife Carol ran a part time shop repairing cars and light trucks. In 1984, Dale’s Automotive Service became a full service parts and sales source for Mercedes-Benz Trucks. The company was renamed Cruzan’s Truck Service Inc. Shortly thereafter, Mercedes-Benz Trucks were discontinued in the United States and Cruzan’s became a Freightliner commercial truck dealer for sales, parts and service. Cruzan’s is a family operated business and holds the same values and similar history as Campbell Supply Company. “We look forward to blending both companies’ strengths into one to provide sales and aftermarket support for which both companies are known for.” said Campbell. Every year since 2007, a group of photographers have held a photo shoot for firefighters of their rigs in front of the twin 9-11 beams. This has always been at no charge to the departments both career and volunteer to express thanks for the job they do. This year 186 emergency vehicles from four states gathered at Liberty State Park to gather with their brother first responders for the photo shoot, and to be sure those lost on that day are never forgotten.

Fair Lawn Firefighters Battle Garage Fire Fair Lawn firefighters battled a two-alarm fire on a busy Saturday night as another multiple alarm fire was being fought a few towns away. Firefighters were dispatched to 0-82 Yerger Rd. just before 9 P.M. for a reported house fire. Upon arrival, command confirmed a JUMP TO FILE# working garage fire 092020113 attacked to the house with smoke showing. A second-alarm was quickly transmitted as other towns in the area, including Fair Lawn, were proving mutual aid at a four-alarm fire in Garfield two towns away. Engine 5 arrived first on scene and stretched two lines and began an interior attack. The fire, which was located in the garage, had spread to the basement of the home. Companies forced entry into the garage and extinguished the fire as interior crews were able to locate the fire in the basement moments later. The fire, which was extinguished within a half an hour, was kept to the garage side of the home and had minimal extension to the upper floors. Mutual aid from Saddle Brook, Hawthorne, Glen Rock, Ridgewood and Ho-Ho-Kus assisted on scene. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Jersey City, N.J. - When he was 10-years-old, Gregory Greene was rescued from his burning home by city firefighters. Later, his father took him to the Communipaw Avenue firehouse for a visit with the members of Engine Co. 20 and Truck Co. 5. The rest is history. He spend some 55-years hanging around that firehouse with his second family at his home-awayfrom-home. Engine 20 and Truck 5 are gone, but the house remains as the quarters of Rescue Co. 1 and Squad Co. 4. In his later years, he battled many health issues, and his time would be spent at a rehab center in the Heights section of the city. Firefighters would stop by to check on him and let Gregory know he was still in their hearts. Gregory Greene passed away in September. Since his youth, Gregory
JUMP TO FILE #092420109 would respond to fires in his neighborhood and assisted firefighter in anyway that he could. He had his gloves on and he was ready for duty. Gregory's unofficial duty was to line line up empty air bottles in the street. Back at quarters, he would help fill those bottles in the rear of the firehouse. He was very experienced in handling SCBA, and he was the unofficial Mask Service Unit, before the department organized such a unit. He also looked after the firehouse when members were out on routine calls. On June 21st, 2019, the FDJC held a Meritorious Award Ceremony at City Hall. Firefighters were recognized for their courage, experience and life saving actions.
At the center of the ceremony was the department's loyal friend, Gregory Greene, 65. Before firefighters received their awards, Chief of Department Steve Mc Gill and Mayor Steven Fulop named Gregory Honorary Deputy Chief, receiving a badge and ID card. During the ceremony, Gregory sat in the front row, along with family members. As firefighters came forward to receive their awards, they all turned to “GG” and offered him a salute and/or a handshake. A statement on a Facbook page said: “Gregory will be remembered for his smile, enormous personality and his genuine love for every member of the JCFD. Especially Squad 4 and Rescue 1.” - RON JEFFERS

Passaic Firefighters Battles Second Alarm An overnight fire kept Passaic and mutual aid firefighters busy on a very humid September 10th, causing extensive damage but no reported injuries. Shortly after 3:30 A.M., units were dispatched to 15 De Bell Ct., a JUMP TO FILE# short dead end 091020103 street for the report of a fire. The first due truck and engine entered the block while other units had to remain on Bond Street. All family members were confirmed safely out of the home. Flames were traveling up the A/D corner of the 2 ½ story frame dwelling apparently from a garbage can fire. A second-alarm was sounded as the fire extended up the walls and into the attic area. Smoke intensified from the attic as companies opened up. Flames broke through the roof in several places, but was quickly knocked down. The fire was placed under control in about one hour. Companies from Clifton, Paterson, and Wallington worked on the scene. - BILL TOMPKINS

This month we feature Brush 26 from the Leesburg Volunteer Fire Department in Maurice River Township ( Cumberland County.) This truck formerly served with Chews Landing and according to the Leesburg chief the conversion was done by Chews so the truck is exactly as it was there with no additional; modifications. It is a 1992 Ford F-350, 4 x 4 with a 150 gpm pump and 250 gallon water tank. It has a 2 ½-inch tank fill. One unique feature is the setup for the whip lines. I have seen many whip lines in my travels but this one actually does not have a hose feeding the nozzles. There are two smooth bore guns that are fed directly through the pump. The chief demonstrates the effect of them in one of the photos. Features and equipment include a chair for the nozzle operation, a 2 ½ ton winch, chain saw, 1000 feet of forestry hose, hand fire extinguishers, AED, suction machine, BLS kit, Steamlight and Rigid spotlights.

Cooler autumn weather is the perfect time for chili; and while slow cookers are certainly popular when it comes to chili, nothing beats cooking it in a pot on the stove top so the aromas fill the firehouse. I mean, if chili ever had a “season” it most certainly is now. This dish is the quintessential fire-
house meal; it’s cheap, flavorful and can feed a crowd. Every year, firehouses all over the country have chili cookoffs, often resulting in heated competitions amongst local companies. See what I did there? And ask any firehouse chef, there are a million and one ways to make it and everyone has the best recipe. Most chili recipes are your standard beef, tomato and chile based, which is absolutely delicious and easily the most popular way to make it. But sometimes we crave variety or just something different to keep things interesting, and this Chipotle-Turkey Chili is the perfect answer to that. Ground
turkey is a great ingredient to use if you are looking to lighten up a dish. It has much less calories than beef, but still adds a ton of protein to help fill up the crew. But with this leaner meat also comes less flavor. With that being said, turkey is a blank canvas for other flavors like cumin, coriander and chipotle. Garnishing with avocado adds some extra healthy fat and cilantro is the perfect ingredient to brighten it up. So if you are looking for something different to make at the firehouse, but still keep everyone happy...look no further! Stay safe, eat well!

*Note: I am a firm believer that no pot of chili is the same when it comes to seasonings. Please taste yours and adjust it according to your liking. Procedure:
JOHN M. MALECKY
Leesburg chief demonstrates operation of one of the whip line nozzles which is fed directly from the pump.
-In a food processor, combine the carrot, celery, ½ of the onion and garlic. Pulse into a paste. If you do not have a food processor, just finely mince them all together. This is your sofrito mixture.
-In a large stock pot over medium heat, add enough EVOO to cover the bottom of pot. When the oil is shimmering, add your ground turkey. Do NOT touch the turkey now until it starts to brown. At this point, season with a generous pinch of salt. Flip the turkey over and brown the other side. Add your sofrito mixture and start to break up the turkey. Cook, stirring frequently until mixture just starts to get some color. -Add the dried spices, stir until fragrant. Now add the chopped tomatoes and stir to combine.
AJ FUSCO
-Add the bell pepper and 1 can of black beans. Bring to a simmer. Puree the other can of black beans in a food processor and add to the pot. This step is optional but adds body to the chili. If you don’t have a food processor you can just mash them up with a fork. After about 10 minutes or so, taste and adjust and seasonings/spices. At this point, add the chipotle a little at a time. Taste and adjust. -Continue cooking for 20-30 minutes. Taste and adjust seasoning. Serve with avocado, cilantro, chopped onion and lime wedge.

Englewood Second Alarm Commercial Building Fire Englewood firefighters made quick work of a fire in a large twostory warehouse that went to two alarms Saturday night, September 12th. Firefighters were dispatched to 330 S. Van Brunt St. just before 8 P.M. for an activated fire alarm in a large food distribution ware- JUMP TO FILE# house. On arrival of 091420113 first units, a fire in the warehouse was confirmed with a heavy smoke condition. A second-alarm was transmitted bringing a ladder from Hackensack, an engine from Teaneck, and a FAST Team from Tenafly. Interior crews were able to knock down the fire, which was kept in check by sprinklers, with the initial attack line. An additional FAST Team was requested from Bergenfield as Tenafly was put to work to assist with overhaul and check for any extension. A special request was made to the Mahwah FD for their fan boat to assist in the ventilation of smoke from the large warehouse. The fire was knocked down within 15 minutes. No injures were reported and the fire is under investigation. - CHRIS TOMPKINS

New York Rescues (5) VIDEO REVIEW

New York Rescues (5) (5 DVD Set) By Advanced Print & Video
Available from: FSP Books & Videos 188 Central Street, Suite #4 Hudson, MA 01749-1330 1-800522-8528 E-mail: support@fire-pol i c e - e m s . c o m www.fire-police-ems.com Price $69.95 This is the final disk of the five DVD set and features Rescue 5 stationed in the Borough of Staten Island. The footage takes place in 1997 when they were assigned a Mack MR/Saulsbury rescue truck with a walk-in body in which four crew members suited up and sat during responses. Their current rescue trucks have non-walk-in bodies
and the entire crew rides in the cab. This DVD is 45 minutes rather than the others which were 60 minutes. This coverage is different than the other four in the following respects: There is no introduction by any member of the company and there are no interviews or training sessions with specialized equipment. There is also no narration by the videographer. All that can be heard is radio traffic which is not very audible in most cases. There is also no indication of what is burning, nor the date, box number or the number of alarms. On the back of the jacket of the set is a brief explanation of what is within and two third alarm fires are mentioned. The fires are spectacular! One is in an attached two story building which could be a dwelling, offices or commercial establishments. Take your pick! The buildings are fully involved with exposures being threatened. Tower ladder steams and some handlines operate and have their work cut out
for them. The second fire appears to be in what might be a private property with several expensive dwellings. The main fire is in the middle and two large buildings are exposed and burning. It is unclear what is burning in the middle. There is a construction shovel on the property which suggests that there was work in progress and the main fire may have been a building under construction because not much is left of it. Tower Ladder 77 comes in off the street and goes to work with its platform stream. Rescue 5 is heavily engaged in both of these fires but a videographer would never be able to get close enough to view them. Other parts of this DVD involve riding along with the crew while they gear up during responses. The DVD is also dedicated to a firefighter from the company who lost his life and part of the proceeds will help his family. This footage is a fitting way to bring to a close a salute to New York City rescues!

Paterson Battles Overnight Fourth Alarm Paterson firefighters were able to contain a raging four-alarm fire that left 29 residents homeless from possibly spreading to numerous additional homes on September 19th. On arrival at 86 Redwood Ave. shortly before 4:00 A.M., heavy fire was involving the rear of the large two-story duplex home from the first floor to above the roof. The fire had entered on all floors and attic. A garage in the rear was well involved and flames had extended to the exposure “B” home. Deputy Chief Calamita transmitted a second-alarm on arrival and a third-alarm within 10 minutes.
JUMP TO FILE #092120101 Firefighters attempted an interior attack on the original fire building, but rapidly deteriorating conditions forced them outside for an exterior attack. A fourth-alarm was called for as fire spread to a home on Jasper Street in the rear. Two tower ladders, two deck guns, several ground monitors, and multiple hand lines were put into operation. The multiple streams had the heavy fire knocked down in about a half hour, but pockets of fire re-
mained. By about 6:30 A.M., the fire was able to be placed under control and units began to be released. The original fire building, the exposure building, and a garage in the rear were destroyed. The home on Jasper Street and the exposure “2A” building suffered less significant damage. There were no initial reports of injuries or a cause. The Passaic County Prosecutors Office and fire investigators were called to the scene. Clifton, Passaic and Woodland Park provided mutual aid at the scene. - BILL TOMPKINS

Rigs of Nontraditional Colors
Author’s note: In the September column it was reported by one of our dealer’s that the Pennington Road Fire Company in Ewing Township (Mercer County) ordered a pumper. I have since been advised that apparently the updated designation is now Ewing Township Fire Department, Station 30. This month we feature two fire departments in Gloucester County who broke tradition some time ago when the members decided they did not want apparatus of a traditional color. One is Whitman Square in Washington Township and the other is Port Norris. In the case of Whitman Square, they decided on robin’s egg blue as their color and Port Norris members noticed a 1990 Seagrave pumper from Keyport (Monmouth County) with a color that attracted them. That color is Cadillac red. That is how it was described to me when it was delivered and I photographed it for the dealer. It is sort of a deep maroon. Port Norris picked a different roof color than Keyport. Colors today are so numerous they are now only describing them with a number rather than a shade. In the photos from Whitman Square is their newest E1022, a Spartan ER with a Gladiator LFD chassis. Specs include a Cummins L9, 450 hp diesel engine, Hale DSD single-stage 1500 gpm pump, Pro Poly 750 gallon water tank, Akron Apollo deck gun, Akron Mercury hand monitor, 1 ¾-inch front bumper line, six-inch front and rear intakes and Whelen scene lighting. Next is a XE-1021, a 1981 American LaFrance Century Telesqurt which was retired and later served with a couple of out of state FD’s according to sources. It was last used on a farm and the farmer sold it back to the fire company. It can be placed in service if needed. Utility 1027 is next and is 2000 International/Saulsbury and then L-1026 a 2018 Pierce Enforcer PUC, with Ascendant aerial and last is E-1021, a 2003 Spartan Gladiator/Saulsbury pumper. Port Norris photos consist of Tender 1111, a 2012 Mack Granite/KME elliptical tanker and E-1103 a 2005 Spartan Advantage Flat Floor/Elite pumper with a large water tank. See the photos for more details. In dealer news Firefighter 1 has delivered a Ferrara heavy rescue to the North Hudson Regional Fire Rescue (Hudson County.) It is on an Igniter chassis and ahs a walk-in body of extruded aluminum. Firefighter 1 also had taken in a 2004 Seagrave pumper from the Budd Lake VFD (Morris County) when they sold them their new rescue and has since sold the pumper to the Greeley, PA VFD. VCI Emergency Vehicle Specialists has made the following ambulance deliveries: to the McCabe Ambulance Service in Bayonne (Hudson County) two 2021 AEV Fleethawks on Ford E-350 chassis; to Lacey Township EMS (Ocean County) a Horton remount on a 2019 Ford E-450 chassis; to Cooper UniPlease send any comments or news tidbits you might have about Apparatus of the Month to us at 1st Responder News, 1 Ardmore Street. Don’t Vote for the Mule Your Vote Makes a Difference Chaplain’s Corner Pastor Fernando Villicana
In 1938 the name Boston Curtis appeared on the ballot for Republican Committeeman from Milton Washington. In reality, Boston Curtis was a donkey. The town’s mayor sponsored the animal to demonstrate that people know very little about the candidates. He proved his point - the mule actually won the election! It’s sad but true that too many Americans know very little about their government. Did you know that 10 major political decisions were won by just 1 vote? By One Vote Oliver Cromwell was given control of England in 1845 By One Vote Charles I was executed in 1649
By One Vote English was made the official language in the U.S. over German in 1776
By One Vote Texas was admitted to the Union in 1845. By One Vote President Andrew Johnson was saved from execution after his impeachment in 1868 . By One Vote France was changed from a monarchy to a republic in 1875 By One Vote Rutherford B. Hayes became our 19th president in 1876 By One Vote Hitler won leadership of the German Nazi Party in 1923
By One Vote The US House of Representatives, in 1801, elected Thomas Jefferson as President of the United States By One Vote In 1941, the Selective Service Act (the draft) was saved by a one-vote margin just weeks before Pearl Harbor was attacked

Yes, Your Vote Makes a Difference
Proverbs 29:2 When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man/woman rules, the people groan. This is why it is so very important for us to pray and vote. And know why we are voting for a particular candidate! I had someone tell me recently: “Well, I’m gonna sit this one out and just pray.” We need to understand something! We must pray AND VOTE!
I read a short story about two boys and their views on dealing with a crisis. Two Christian boys decided to take a short cut across a fenced field after church one day. After hopping the fence and walking a short distance they noticed a raging bull kicking up the dirt and snorting out of his nostrils. One boy looked at the other and said: “We better stop and pray.”The second boy looked at him and said: “No, we’d better run and pray.”
RON JEFFERS
Well, we better pray and vote! Critically important issues are at stake in this Presidential election Christian!
-How do you feel about abortion (sanctity of life)? -Late term and partial birth abortion? -Same sex marriage? -War, terrorism, foreign policy? -Open borders/closed borders? -Economy - the ability to prosper and grow and purchase homes etc.?
All of these and more will be heavily impacted by our next President. How do the presidential candidates values measure up to the Word of God (Bible)? 2 Samuel 23:3 “He who rules over men must be just, ruling in the fear of God.”
Psalm 33:12 Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD, the people he chose for his inheritance. Don’t Vote for the Mule Your Vote Makes a Difference
